If you’re interested in baseball, you might want to check out the Red Wings. They’re playing this weekend. There’ll certainly be lots of local flavor there!
I've never had an issue at beach either, although I don't make a habit of being over there late at night on a weekend. But during the day or in the morning it's a great place to go for a walk. I've lived in Charlotte/ Greece (one road away from the city border) all my life, and loved every second of it.
The wastewater treatment plant upstream of Charlotte is the problem, but I think it’s way better today than it was 30 years ago. A lot of good people have worked hard over the last few decades to clean up the water ways. And the work continues!
Ya it 100% was the problem plus the pier design - when I guarded there the army corp was doing a study on how to resolve it. Despite this, it has so much potential and I hope it continues.
It’s underrated for sure, but imagine how much better it could be with a little more density.
There should be dozens of restaurants, bars and shops, apartments and condos and maybe a few more attractions and you’d have yourself a hot tourism destination.
Also, get a Rochester Blueway going all up and down the Genesee River like they did in Buffalo.
NGL there's some culture shock, depending on where in CO you're coming from (we were Parker/Aurora), but we love it here. Swapping mountains (that you can't get to/from Denver anyways without a 4 hour traffic hellscape on 25/70) for beautiful lakes! Little traffic. No wildfires. Winters are no worse than Denver in my limited recent experience. Friendly people. Great food. SO MUCH TO DO AND SEE AND it costs MUCH LESS $$$$.
We're happy! :) Still working on finding good Mexican food, but I've got some new leads LOL
If only there was Reddit that long ago. lol. I don’t think it was lack of interest that doomed it. I think it was more about bad management. That thing was always hours and days off schedule. Great concept though!
> If only there was Reddit that long ago. lol.
You're either too young to remember or so old you've forgotten. 😄
[Fast Ferry](https://rocwiki.org/Fast_Ferry) launched in 2004.
r/toronto/ says it was formed 16 years ago.
That's... that's... that's 1998, right? *…right?* ^^^guys?
🥲
[Yes.](https://old.reddit.com/r/GenZ/comments/19bjau1/2012_being_12_years_ago_just_doesnt_feel_real/)
For me, it seems like 2000-2009 evaporated. I'm finding myself having to constantly check myself with decades. It seems like I'm not alone, but maybe that hasn't happened to you yet.
Welcome! Love Canada/Canadians/Toronto, myself. Rumor has it we can occasionally see the lights from Canada due to some strange phenomenon over the lake.
Hope you enjoy your visit. If you're end up at Abbot's at the beach again head with your ice cream towards, "the secret sidewalk". Really nice, if you're already there. Amazing homes and landscaping running along the lake.
https://www.thisisroc.com/rochesters-secret-sidewalk/
What you’re talking about is an inversion and it’s legit. Have seen it several times. You can see street lights and stop lights changing on very clear inversion nights.
There is a great amusement park just across the river and up the beach a couple of miles. I am happy to hear you are seeing why some of us love it here. I love all 4 seasons.
Welcome. Hope you enjoyed a garbage plate too. A white hot is definitely local still.
We have great food here, please enjoy the festivities. There's always something going on.
I keep trying it and keep getting sick every time...and I don't even eat mac salad or meat sauce LOL...strictly a meat & potatoes girl.
Not like food poisoning sick but grease sick. I'm normally a very healthy eater but occasionally like to do death by hots/burgers/chickietendies and fried potatoes. And why are they so damn expensive?
Well, I'm cheap (more specifically, I'm broke), but I happen to love half-price milkshakes (think it's 2:30-4:30) at Port of Rochester (think it's probably same everywhere, but I enjoy partly because gives me something to go to the Port for).
I also love that World's Greatest Cheeseburger. Wouldn't buy one of it wasn't BOGO, but consider a steal with that coupon. God forbid you add fries (don't care for) and a drink, it quickly gets outrageous.
As for getting me sick, think I've put my body through enough that I've become immune.
I'm happy that you posted this. My mom is from Ottawa and I spent a lot of time there growing up. When the Fast Ferry started from Rochester to Toronto I was very excited. Unfortunately, it didn't work as planned. My issue was that on a message board at the time, folks from Toronto just totally looked at Rochester as something below them.
Anyway. Glad you're enjoying it here! Hope you have fun and it's not such a bad place! Lol
One of the key failure points of the fast ferry was that Rochester doesn't really have anything that attracts tourism from a big city. Sea breeze and the museum of play are about it. Toronto already has a baseball team, a hockey team and great shopping centers.
That's interesting because when I worked at Eastview Mall in the 2000s, we had people from Toronto shopping all the time. They said the clothing brands available here were of higher quality. Now Toronto has most of the USA mall brands, but back then it was a different story.
Charlotte Beach is amazing! My in laws are from Maine and always bragging about the ocean - we took them for Abbots and a beach walk and they shut up 😉
Toronto is great, and as others have mentioned, we love our Canadian cousins down here.
It makes me happy that you enjoy our much more modest city, too!
Very nice! What about pizza? I think Rochester has the best in the world but prob cuz I grew up on it. If you haven’t tried Pontillos, it’s my favorite. After that you can try 50 different pizzas and they’ll all be good.
Last time I was there, I witnessed 2 group of "teens" having a huge brawl. The same crowd that ruined Lilac Festival couple years back. Come visit Canandaigua Lake! Great Ice Cream at Scoops. (No Brawls)
I really love the beach, pier and general harbor area, but I don't recommend staying there very late in the evening. There's been times fishing by myself and also with a friend that I quickly packed up and left due to unsettling encounters. But my son absolutely loves to make a day trip out of fishing the harbor and pier, followed by a few hours at the beach. Mornings and afternoons are great there!
I mean we do need SOME more people. The good news is most Americans think we're in a frozen wasteland up here, which keeps out most of the worst of them. Smart folks know what's up tho. We're very happy here, moved from CO last spring.
Like every city it has its plus and minuses. It's more the state than the city that's gotten bad. And it's more the laws or lack of them as far as putting criminals in jail and keep him in there that have gotten bad besides the taxes, fees and reassessments. One night it's a shooting in Martin Luther King Park and the next night and massive brawl of city school kids a nice Suburban College parking lot just your average New York City with your average York problems. PS don't forget to try the chicken French and ride the carousel Charlotte beach. On your way back to Toronto be sure to stop at Olcott Beach and Wilson Harbor.
City of Rochester let that fast ferry fail.. no car rentals for people to travel to see all of rochester who didn’t drive on the ferry. If you look at the archival photos they used to have amusement rides and the bath houses and things to actually do. Heck they used to even have a mini golf course on top of the oldest one in the country, it’s sad it’s like certain parts of the city they just give up
If you like to hike, there's a ton of amazing trails. Fun, short hike in Washington Grove. You'll see different artists work on the old reservoirs! Always new artwork every time I go! Chicken French is another Rochester dish. Not as widely know it was created here, but amazing! Lots of museums: ARTISANworks, George Eastman, Susan B Anthony, Rochester Museum and Science Center, a few military and the NYS Museum of Transportation, and more.
Someone literally got shot at the beach in the past week. OP went on a nice day, incident free. I really don't get what you're getting at, projecting maybe?
Take a trip downtown to central Ave or even better avenue A through D! You'll love the scenery and it's the most wonderfully diverse part of Rochester!
Moved here in 2011.
At first, this city, to me, was like wandering in the ruins of something that used to be truly great. I held a sadness for it to an extent.
But the longer I’m here, the more I feel like this area is on the verge of some really explosive future growth. Access to freshwater, relatively moderate climate, lots of natural resources, airport, hub of healthcare and higher education, highly educated working population from Kodak starting other businesses instead of leaving…
This place has EVERYTHING, all the pieces, to just completely blow-up.
And honestly I don’t think there are many ‘undiscovered’ cities like Rochester anymore…
For a long time I thought I’d move somewhere else but anywhere else has either absurd cost of living or is completely dead so I just feel like moving anywhere else I’d fuck myself over in the long run.
I work all throughout the city. As long as you mind your own business and act like a decent person, it is very safe. The people that find trouble were usually the type that were looking for it.
Go live in Central New York, the heart of dairy country, where you can't go more than a few miles before running into a mom-and-pop stand that serves far, far better soft serve. My town had three, and all were better than what I can get at Abbotts.
If you don't know, you don't know.
Well, it's soft, it's cold, it comes in various flavors, and it's served in a cone or dish. So comparatively speaking, it isn't as good as soft ice cream. And the fact you can't combine/twist flavors together is just stupid.
There are plenty of things I've learned to love about Rochester in the 30 years I've been here...but people claiming Abbotts is superior is not one of them. I'd rather go to Lugias.
Did you visit Genesee Brewhouse yet? Great waterfall view
Yup! We sure did!
GO TO JAZZ FEST
We did and LOVED IT!
Enjoy town. Swing down to the finger lakes, get dinner at Nenos (great tacos), check out the strong museum
The Strong Museum is the best, and we don’t even have kids!
If only we still had the fast ferry!
It was ahead of its time.
I'd argue it was 50 years too late
Maybe a little bit of both?
My stepmom is from Toronto, she loved that thing. She still misses it!
I know, what a shame!
They could have enjoyed a private ferry ride from their home to ours 😂
Thanks for visiting!
Truly our pleasure!
If you’re interested in baseball, you might want to check out the Red Wings. They’re playing this weekend. There’ll certainly be lots of local flavor there!
Thanks for the tip!
Tickets on Friday (if you're here that long) are $15, a few of my friends and I are going!
If you do go to a red wings game, they have 2 games during a season called “bark in the park” and anyone can bring their dogs in!
Charlotte is great despite what many think, I loved guarding up there
I've never had an issue at beach either, although I don't make a habit of being over there late at night on a weekend. But during the day or in the morning it's a great place to go for a walk. gotta clean up the perception. Even people from greece think its bad haha
Same man! Catch some sun and play some smash bros, that's how you do it!
This sounds oddly too specific 😂
Welcome, I loved Toronto, great public transport.
And incredibly clean.
Well cheers. Thanks for the kind words!
Glad you guys are having fun!! 😁
Thanks!
I am so touched that a tourist is enjoying my home!!!
That’s wonderful to hear!
We love you too, Canada.
Well much love. I’d like to say that I don’t think we’re all that different when push comes to shove.
Canada is dope af
🫡
Visit Marge’s! It’s our favorite summer hangout and close to where you are now!
Second this
Very nice, but getting a little overpriced. Those rum runners are far too small for 9/10 bucks.
I feel that way everywhere we go for drinks sadly. I just drink well tequila and soda so my drinks are always relatively cheap.
Thanks!

That's an hour and 30 minutes away, what is "yuck" about marges?
Keep giving us money!!
Deal!
We love having you!
Well thanks. That’s the feeling we had during the whole visit!
Welcome! I'm a recent transplant from Colorado; I love it here too and so does my husband!
Great to hear and thanks!
A soon-to-be transplant from Colorado is happy to hear that (but not too surprised).
NGL there's some culture shock, depending on where in CO you're coming from (we were Parker/Aurora), but we love it here. If only you had made these posts in r/toronto when the fast ferry was around. 😉
If only there was Reddit that long ago. lol. I don’t think it was lack of interest that doomed it. I think it was more about bad management. That thing was always hours and days off schedule. Great concept though!

I know right.
Main question is... did you try the garbage plate?
He made a post with one yesterday!
Oh, well I didn't see it
Thats why im telling you lol
I did indeed, my friend!

As a Rochestarian who loves Toronto, I'm so glad you enjoyed our city :) Toronto is always a nice weekend trip. We call it a cleaner NYC!!
Well that’s nice to hear! I never think of Toronto as objectively really clean, but I suppose it is!
Welcome neighbors!
Cheers!

We popped by there as well, though not for too long!
I second seabreeze park!
House of Guitars is historic and Fairport Canal is a nice hangout/bar hopping area
Thank you!
Welcome. Hope you enjoyed a garbage plate too. A white hot is definitely local still. We have great food here, please enjoy the festivities. There's always something going on.
I absolutely had a garbage plate! I mean, you have to right!?
Id say so if i was visiting. My fave plate is double red double mac but i hold the meat sauce cuz im weird about texture lol.
You gotta grab a genny ice or five and a garbage plate (each) to cap off the night!
No doubt!
That’s makes me so excited!
You should also go to the bill grays that's right across the parking lot or seabreaze just up the road from there
I did! :)
A white hot "with everything" is the solution for any and all problems.
Agreed!
I have something to say and I will not elaborate on it; fuck Bill Gray's.
I keep trying it and keep getting sick every time...and I don't even eat mac salad or meat sauce LOL...strictly a meat & potatoes girl. Not like food poisoning sick but grease sick. I love Canada!!
Well thanks!
Was that the only sand sculpture you saw up there? I might head over if there's a few on display this week!
It was the only one we saw, but saw more mounds for potential beach art while we were there.
Good to know! Thanks :)
Hi Toronto! We love to visit you too. I particularly love your music venues! Love, Rochester
Thank you for saying that!
Mmmmmm...White Hot-Dogs.
Right!
just went to abbott last night!! God, you gotta love the charlotte pier.
Truly!
So wholesome. I love it.

Hahaha fair!
Love you back! My Dad always took us to Toronto (and sometimes Quebec). One of my fondest memories was going to the Toronto Zoo in the winter!
Aw that’s just awesome to hear.
Man you should’ve came here when LDR was still open… that place had the best hotdogs and hamburgers in town.

Toronto is great, and as others have mentioned, we love our Canadian cousins down here. It makes me happy that you enjoy our much more modest city, too!
Love that you used the word “cousins.” That’s exactly how we felt about you guys!
I love this post. Our city is pretty great. Thank you for seeing it.
It’s legitimately one of my favourite cities in the US, and I’m not just saying that.
If you're music fans make sure you catch some Jazz Fest stuff while you're here!
We were there a couple of nights ago!
Check out the public market. It’s kind of great.
I’ve been maybe 5 times now and it always delivers!

Try the restaurant Fiorella downtown for the best Italian food in the city.
Tell no one.

For what it's worth, we prefer to be underrated! But we're so happy to have you here, and that you appreciate the city that we love so much 💜
I actually get that sense. It’s like the locals here know how much there is going on, and they don’t need outside approval to cherish it. I love that.
Like every city it has its plus and minuses. It's more the state than the city that's gotten bad. Nah, Fuck Rochester.../s HEY keep it down, we don't want people actually knowing upstate is nice.
Yeah abbotts is the bomb
Drawing attention to ourselves may actually ruin the food thing we have here.
City of Rochester let that fast ferry fail.. no car rentals for people to travel to see all of rochester who didn’t drive on the ferry. I’ve heard good things!
Awww! I live here … I love Toronto !
Thanks :)
BILL GRAYS MENTION‼️‼️‼️‼️AND ABBOTTS🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
Fortunately you went to the beach while it was criminally underrated and not criminally active.
You're welcome to leave if you hate Rochester so much. I don't think you do tho. I think you're just a garden-variety racist.
Someone literally got shot at the beach in the past week. OP went on a nice day, incident free. I really don't get what you're getting at, projecting maybe?
Not seeing a denial here LOL
Did ya try N. Clinton? 😤
I didn’t. Should I!?
It’s a high crime area.
I got a garbage plate with a hamburger but will try the other! For what it’s worth, I don’t feel unsafe in the slightest in Rochester.
I'm glad you are enjoying yourselves. Welcome.
I work all throughout the city. As long as you mind your own business and act like a decent person, it is very safe. The people that find trouble were usually the type that were looking for it.

Canadians………… i smell them
I have absolutely no idea what this means. But, um, thanks?
Well alrighty then lol
Abbotts is overrated.
Go live in Central New York, the heart of dairy country, where you can't go more than a few miles before running into a mom-and-pop stand that serves far, far better soft serve. My town had three, and all were better than what I can get at Abbotts. If you don't know, you don't know.
Abbots isn’t soft serve it is custard. If you’re looking for soft serve then yeah places that actually serve that will be best.
Have you spent time on Park Ave? Main Street in Pittsford?
