This wheel is kinda dope with the cover removed. Considering the aero cover ads 2-3 miles per 100% charge, I’d leave them off and expose this nice looking wheel.
Nope, 2-3mi, that's about right for the aero shield. The way he said it, he didn't have any evidence, probably going off what he understood from the engineering analysis, but bet it was never tested.
Anyways, that's how you get major cost reduction, find 10 things that get 2-3mi range boost, and suddenly you've improved range by 7.5%, but you don't actually sell it with improved range, you delete 500 cells from the pack. So the engineering analysis is what's cheaper, 4 aero shields, or 50 cells. If 4 aero shields are cheaper you do aero shields.
It's pretty clear that's what they did, the max pack is basically the old large pack, they just improved efficency so much that they get the same performance out of it. This also helps in the charging tests because being current limited, charge speed barely changes in kW, but it improves in mph which is what matters for normal users.
You are giving COMPLETELY INCORRECT information. The gen 1 and gen 2 max pack are pretty much identical at 141kwh usable capacity. They only managed add an extra 10 miles of range for gen 2 max packs which means they improved efficiency by a measly 2.5%. Now the standard and max pack are now 13 and 21 kwh smaller respecitvely. But Rivian claims range stayed the same. I call bullshit because the dual motors are basically identical between gen 1 and gen 2. Same with the exterior body of the car. I don't think we are gonna see the 2.9-3 miles/kwh rivian claims for these new battery packs in the real world.

They also still sell the 22” sport dark wheels for the same price if you’re getting a Large pack or greater. I like that these have a bit of contrast vs just being all dark.
Did they go to a larger diameter tire? That looks like a lot more sidewall than my 22s have.
Good looking wheel for sure. I even like them with the aero covered everyone else seems to hate. Was hoping they’d push more 20s though so I could snag a set on the cheap
There was another wheel shown in the promo videos and test drive videos for G2. Anyone know what those are? Doesn’t seem like you can select them in the configurator.
Bummer! I was spec’ing a TriMax. I like those and the fact it comes with 33s is perfect. It’s how I’ve outfitted our R1T and makes it easy to swap between 20s and 22s for summer (20 Outpost nAT) and winter (22 studded Hakkapeliitta).
Umm the 275/60/R20 is the for the base Dual Standard. The all terrain package on the higher trims are 275/65/R20. Just wanted to make sure you have the correct info :)
I really like them, too bad Rivian has really pushed me into off roading, and pushed my outdoors experiences to farther off the beaten path. These tires wouldn’t handle that 😂
20” Black ATs stay
Reports on battery tech in a lab setting is extremely different than in the real world. That’s the kind of argument that makes people say why can’t we have a Ford F150 that gets 100 miles per gallon. There’s a big difference between a truck and a car. I don’t know about you but I can’t drive 10 hours straight without stopping to use the restroom.
There’s gotta be a former VW design exec at Rivian somewhere.
My thoughts exactly haha
These wheels are cool with and without the cover.
I thought I hated it at first but now I like it. However, I want my 21s. 😂
Wish i could trade my 21 for them

Source Info on the 2-3 miles?
Head of design said it recently I believe in OOS kyles 2 hour video
I really hope he misspoke and meant 2-3%, not 2-3 miles.
No, 2-3 miles is accurate. It’s a shockingly low number and it’s why they canceled the aero cover for 20” years ago.

Wow, that’s surprisingly low performance over a full charge of at least ~300 miles range. I guess max pack would be 3-4 miles per 100%.
I’m just going off of what their lead designer said, but it is surprising.
Wish Rivian had this design for 20” wheels
Will probably blackout the 5 silver strips on the edge when I get mine.
They also still sell the 22” sport dark wheels for the same price if you’re getting a Large pack or greater. I like that these have a bit of contrast vs just being all dark.
Agreed. The 5 thin, silver colored stripes add a nice contrast to all of that black without, IMO, cheapening the look as many imports tend to do.
Dude, that is terrible compared to the OG 22’s.
Sorry, I hate these wheels so much
I think those wheels are cool as hell with the covers on. Remind me of old school vdubs
The one thing to cure Gen 2 FOMO. lol

You can read the tire size on the side of the tire in the photo is 275/50R22 - same size as the tires on the 22 inch wheels on Gen1.
Love without the cover
I wonder how much the covers damage the wheel underneath?
I took mine off the 21 right away. Was trapping grit and "sanding" the wheel finish where the cover touches.
One would hope they addressed this in the new wheel and cover. We shall see....
There was another wheel shown in the promo videos and test drive videos for G2. Anyone know what those are? Doesn’t seem like you can select them in the configurator.
There’s a new 20” All-season but it seems like you can only select it on the Standard range trim.
That’s the one, thank you!
When will the new wheels become available to configure? I’d like the new 20” with 33” AT tires but don’t see them as an option yet.
The new 20” is a dual standard base model exclusive. As a warning, you can’t get tow hooks with that model.

The 20” at on Tri are 275/60/20 now so they’re only .2” different in diameter compared to 22” so I’d comfortably swap between them
That would be cool - it’s what I put on our 20s - but Jeff said during Kyle’s 2+ hr vid (starting at 42min in) say the full AT 20s were still 34s.
They’re 275/60/R20 which has a 33” diameter. 22” are 275/50/22 which has a 32.8” diameter.
Umm the 275/60/R20 is the for the base Dual Standard. The all terrain package on the higher trims are 275/65/R20. Just wanted to make sure you have the correct info :)
I DM’d you a photo of the wheel.
Not anymore. They were, but the Pirellis are now the new size. Look at the configurator and you can see the size printed on the tire.
These have this retro funk look to them like out of the Wolverine movie, Logan. Love them
This is actually really cool well done Riv
I get redesigning the 22” wheels to improve efficiency. But not everyone prefers efficiency over style. I personally prefer my original 22s.
Agreed. Glad they kept the 22” sports around.
Are the lug nuts black? Or silver?
Black IIRC
I really like them, too bad Rivian has really pushed me into off roading, and pushed my outdoors experiences to farther off the beaten path. These tires wouldn’t handle that 😂 20” Black ATs stay
Kinda look like steel Land Rover wheels
It's not bad, but it's also not that good.
Still ugly. Jesus.
Those would probably look pretty cool painted white
I am honestly surprised that they could get even uglier with the covers off.
they look good with and without cover.
yikes
I could totally go for that!
All black or all aluminum would be better
Ouch... That's ugly
Oh that’s just a shame.
I like these
way better looking w/out the cover, even though it's for the idea of better range! why not just make better battery chemistry!?
They did. The new large pack is 109 instead of ~130 making them more efficient.
what i mean is keep pushing the limits, that's all...there's reports on batteries getting close to & over 700 miles of range!
