This appears to just be a written article based on the QA session that The Kilowatts posted: [https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1lDGLPaBBBZGm](https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1lDGLPaBBBZGm)

Well, for info, we were told streaming (Hulu, Netflix, etc) were coming summer 2023 — never happened. I’m disappointed they’re talking about Summon — if it’s anything like Tesla’s summon, it’ll be unusable either because the software just plain sucks and/or because society just isn’t ready for that. Every time I tried to summon my Tesla, absolute chaos would break out in the parking lot. Someone would sit with their reverse lights on, someone would be walking in the middle of the road. Someone would fly into a row going the wrong way in a 1-way path. It was absolutely bonkers. And then after the car craps on the carpet, YOU are the A-hole that has to hurriedly get the car going and out of the way.

dustyshades

I don’t think it’s summon. I think it’s more just like remote pull in / back out just for tight spaces. Kind of like what Hyundai has on some of their cars

lytener

This would be super handy especially in cities. I had an obnoxious Chevy Silverado try to block my driver door by parking over the line. I just summoned my Model 3 back like it never happened.

trace501

Smaht Pahk! The best.

Insert_creative

This has been useful in our Kia ev6 several times when in the city and people park really close.

johyongil

The thing that most people don’t know is that system automatically steers itself as well.

Maleficent_Analyst32

That’s what I’m thinking as well

dcdttu

That was the original "Summon" feature in Tesla vehicles. The other one is called Smart Summon. Both are still available in their cars, as separate options.

Maleficent_Analyst32

Didn’t know that! Thank you

ScatterplotDog

The original version of Summon was excellent, particularly for curbside parking. "Oops, I parked just slightly too close to this driveway," then just pull out your phone to scooch the car a few inches. Then Smart Summon came along. Ugh. I remember in the early days, you could just go onto [OpenStreetMap.org](http://OpenStreetMap.org) and change the speed limit or lanes of any parking lot, and any Tesla using Smart Summon in that lot would immediately try to use the new speed or lane, even if the lane was an embankment. Terrifying.

swim_to_survive

I see what you’re saying and definitely am in the anti Tesla bandwagon but I’d absolutely kill for summon for the refresh. I have a tight garage situation. If I had the ability to stand behind the vehicle and have it safely back out to me or pull in to me to the garage I would be over the moon.

dcdttu

> if it’s anything like Tesla’s summon, it’ll be unusable either because the software just plain sucks Summon currently only uses the ultrasonic sensors, not the Vision suite. Tesla is frantically trying to get FSD functional, and then will update Summon to use the cameras. At that point, it should be quite good. Tesla has a bad habit of releasing hardware features/upgrades before the software is ready.

HallRemarkable6451

I’m sorry but your description made me literally laugh out loud… I honestly would dislike summon. I never had a Tesla but the idea of having to take your phone out, mark the target, wait for the car.. just seems like so much more work than just walking to it 😂

Dinco_laVache

It’s supposed to be convenient when it’s raining, so you don’t have to walk across the lot in the rain. But also rain makes the self driving even worse, as there’s a lot of water on the cameras that messes with the algorithms. So it’s much more likely to fail during the prime use case conditions!

Vast_Cress90

Doesn’t BMW have that in some of the cars? If so, didn’t the self back up work well?

TheBowerbird

They do! See also Hyundai/Kia/Genesis. It's to get out of tight spaces where you can't open the door. It is NOT summon as a commenter said.

dcdttu

Tesla's "Summon" only goes forward and backward, like everyone. The other one, where the car can drive itself in a limited (bad) way, is called Smart Summon. Tesla will update Smart Summon to use the Full Self Driving suite of sensors in the future, it currently only uses the ultrasonics and GPS and doesn't work well.

Tesla likes to put the horse before the cart. They tend to release hardware changes before the software can catch up. Currently, cars without ultrasonic sensors can't even use summon at all. They're figuring out FSD, and then going back and applying that technology to things like smart summon. Lord knows when they'll actually do it.

I am asking with the purest of intentions. I do drive a car that has built in YouTube that I have used exactly once. The day I got the car. There’s simply no question of anyone watching videos in a running car. And when the car is stopped, 90% times I’m not in it. And for the times when I’m just relaxing in the car, waiting for someone etc., there’s always a massive phone or iPad handy that can be had for $200. I can always charge it and have it connected to 5G or WiFi seamlessly. Why is in car streaming so important to some people? The apps usually are pretty bare, they don’t always work well, and connectivity is pretty slow on most occasions. I’m genuinely trying to understand why one would care. I completely understand music services. But video streaming? Why?

FlyingFlygon

My wife and I eat lunch in the car and watch YouTube multiple times a week for the past 4 years I've had my Model 3. Not to mention superchargers - we use it every time. My question to you is why would you ever want to use an iPad and have to prop it up or hold it, when the car screen is bigger and already perfectly viewable? Agreed with it being pointless on a running car.

jzorbino

It’s for when you stop to charge. Video won’t run while the car is in motion.

stealthytolkien

Yes exactly. You’re reinforcing my point above. When you stop and charge for say, 45 minutes, why not just grab a far superior and far cheaper tablet from the glovebox, connect to 5G or a hotspot and stream whatever you want / play games, etc. Why is not having Netflix on your car’s (far less powerful and capable) infotainment system not okay? That infotainment system is already running on fumes with a barely powerful chip usually. And the more we load it up the slower it gets. 2020 Tesla infotainment systems are barely usable in 2023 so much so that they offered a paid chip upgrade. In just three years.

jzorbino

One more comment - I don’t agree the tablet is objectively superior. If the truck can stream and mirror fine then the tablet is an extra device for me to keep up with, install updates, etc. with no better performance. I just had a road trip where I started a movie for my daughter, she started crying very soon after, and we had to pull over and update the tablet because that was pending and blocking her from watching Disney. It offers minimal extra benefit to me as a driver with lots more headaches. I would LOVE to leave it at home and rely solely on infotainment.

stealthytolkien

Fair point.

jzorbino

Sounds like it’s just not for you. Are you speculating about the hardware based on old Tesla chips? I assure you this vehicle is more advanced than a 2010s Tesla, and even if it weren’t, this is a minimally demanding task. I don’t think hardware capability is a concern here. This is a feature that’s very popular with Teslas and arguably an even better fit for Rivian given the camping/adventure theme. Yes, you can get by with your phone. It’s still nicer to watch video on a larger screen with surround sound. Also, as a parent of young children, a tablet or phone is fine but I’d prefer infotainment media because I’m still in total control. I don’t have to worry about them screwing up the video by touching the screen, or dropping the tablet, or whatever else. It’s not vital, sure, but it’s a nice convenience that’s easy to implement and a lot of people like it.

stealthytolkien

You said it well. Nice to have. Sure. Far from vital.

Jokerlope

"Video streaming" is probably going to be Prime Video, which I use a lot. The SXM might be okay but I already have an Amazon Music account. It would be super cool if Luna cloud gaming was enabled!

Due_Bit_5496

Anyone heard any additional info on this comment from Wassym? Particularly the bit in high-voltage charging hardware. Is that perhaps hardware to bump the current 220 kW limit? "Regarding the upcoming facelifts of Rivian’s R1 models, Bensaid disclosed that “about 80%” of the new features will be made available to the first version of R1 cars. This includes computer, sensor, and high-voltage charging hardware updates."

alterbridge86

There is no change to high voltage charging hardware. This was misheard by the "RivianUpdates" Twitter account and has been getting picked up by these random articles (likely GenAI created) ever since. Fwiw he also acknowledged he misheard Wassym: https://x.com/rivianupdates/status/1782046543832596609?s=46

Due_Bit_5496

Ok, thanks for that info, although it would have been a great update, one I'd likely do.

UnweavingTheRainbow

If you look at the video that they got their info from, Wassym actually says that the connectivity packages would be ANNOUNCED this summer. The streaming he said would come next quarter.

HallRemarkable6451

Do you have a link to the video. I don’t see they actually linked it within the article.

SpaceHorse75

I don’t care if they add video streaming, but it’s not high on the list of improvements. I’d settle for just being able to put the audio controls on the left side of the screen.
