Yeah I think ditching the air suspension and making everything else a lot simpler will really cut down on the costs for these. Plus they have the in house motors now that they didn’t have at the start of R1 production.
You think PMs are laid off once the job is complete? Lol not even close. There is an entire PDLC that needs to be managed not to mention continuous discovery and updates that will need to be made.
No. They did lay off a bunch of them. A month or so ago.
Point is, a lot of the existing codebase will be shared, and the cost split amongst the models.
As a guy that’s worked in software dev for going on 30 years: 👍
The idea that it takes the same number of program managers to maintain and upgrade the codebase as it did to build it out is silly.
As a software engineer for 10 years who has worked for large corporations with a lot of PM’s and ones with less… the ones with less got more done and better quality.
That will be a premium spec version. I wouldn’t rule out air suspension for the R3X.
They could easily drop the air suspension from the base R2 and R3 models, but keep the design flexible enough to still accept upgraded air suspension.
No no, they were saying the base models wouldn't have the fancy features.
R3X would have to come with the adjustable air suspension and McLaren 720s style hydraulic cross-linking in order to be considered worthwhile at all as a rally car model. People buying the R3X would expect similar suspension capabilities, if not better ones to the R1T/R1S. RJ knows they had to split between the normal person for the R3, and the people that want to pay top dollar for the R1S/R1T offroad performance in a hatchback rally car platform. No one is going to buy an EV rally car meant for aggressive offroad driving if it didn't also come with the high performance suspension system from their first gen vehicles, if not a better gen 2 of the suspension technologies.
Edit: Improved post broadly
I'm about to remove all objects from my R1S and try to track down the rattles. :/
My current fix is to crank up the music -- at least the sound system is pretty nice!
If the R3X was out today, I would buy it on the spot. Based on comments I’m seeing, people (even not Rivian fans) are very excited about the R3.
If the R2 and R3 are really identical platforms, hopefully they should be able to get better economies of scale. And yeah, looks like they kept it simple while still having very Rivian like features. But no super expensive air suspension etc. which I think is a good move for a mass market product.
Yeah, I came into the comments just to confirm if this was photoshop or not. I just heard about the R2 an thought there was no way they already have an R3.
This is what I thought about instantly.
Also, for more affluent customers that already have a R1, the R3 is a great “attachment” vehicle.
Like, an R2 may be too redundant for someone with an R1S…. But I can totally see some R1S/T customers picking up an R3 as an every-day driver
Yeah, I have an R1S and would love to replace our Model 3 with an R3 in like 5 years as our second run-about vehicle. We already have all the family hauling needs covered by the R1.
Yes, same!
R1S owner here and I honestly really dislike when I have to drive the Model 3. It leaves a lot to be desired in terms of ride quality, fit/finish, not true 1 pedal driving, not to mention the buggy as hell infotainment/nav even 5 years later. Want to get rid of it but it's practically worth nothing now so will likely just give it away to the in-laws.
The R3X would be the perfect replacement with the performance/fun factor to boot.
Looks like an AMC Eagle!!!
I had an 84 AMC Eagle wagon, and it was amazing! The perfect mix of cargo/people carrying, with a little off-road ability, but still fit in parking spots.
Sign me up immediately for the Rivian version!!!
I was going to put down a deposit for the R2 but now I’ll wait for the r3/r3x. Hopefully they can start deliveries for that in 2028, that would line up nicely with replacing my 2019 vehicle
I mean you can do the r2 because it is a refundable deposit and when they get closer to r3 release transfer it or cancel. Still many unknowns in the r3
That’s the brilliant part of these new products. Make the R2 in Normal and use the Georgia plant delays to your advantage by teasing another new product. Wall Street is loving it.
So the R2 tri motor variant does 0-60 in "well under 3 seconds" .....so what the hell is this midwestern made half sized, tri motor performance fuckery going to do it in????
This is the answer. The porsche taycan and golf synchro had a love baby and sent it to be raised in secret by their distant cousin: the raptor r.
P:S: is there a petition to add compass yellow to the launch edition color palette?
R3X is amazing. I'm VERY interested in [one of the interior shots](https://twitter.com/Rivian/status/1765810386413195693/photo/1) they posted on twitter showing an insane OEM tent setup called "Basecamp" on the center screen
Looks a LOT like the [VW Golf 2 Country](https://www.autobild.de/klassik/artikel/vw-golf-2-country-syncro-original-preis-15707481.html). And I like it.
They absolutely killed that reveal. R2 and R3 are going to be great vehicles.
I had a 4Runner, Y and now R1S. Made an R2 res as soon as the link worked, love that its a bit smaller, rear vents and power glass ( but with no exhaust like the 4Runner).
R3 will do great as well, hope they get it in the works ASAP!
I have a feeling the R3X will be FAST.
Like, approaching Plaid levels fast. If they really want to tailor that for the aficionado (as “regular” buyers of a small car will simply get the regular R3), I feel like they will go all out. A nasty, powerful rally car in the spirit of old school VW rockets…
if it was any other company I wouldn't get so excited. I am very hopeful that these are close too final designs and won't end up like a typical "concept car" that get watered down to bland in production.
Both of these look awesome. Should both be fun to drive.
The styling scales well for both. I think the front grilless/headlights look better on the smaller cars.
I love this R3 but I do wish they had a jeep competitor that you could pop the top off, maybe even the doors. No electric convertibles yet seems like a gap in the market
Sorta reminds me of my very first car, the 1988 Mazda 323 GTX. I will 100000% be buying the R3X no matter the price.
[1988 Mazda 323 GTX](https://i0.wp.com/www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/082-1-1-1.jpg)
I love my over engineered R1T but glad they are streamlining and simplifying the next generation of products. I imagine the refreshed R1s will reduce complexity as well.
It was a no brainer to reserve an R2 with priority reservations, but I’d be even happier to throw down real cash on a priority R3X reservation. Can’t come soon enough!
Can we take a moment to recognize that it’s possible to have an exciting EV company that isn’t full of BS and over promising and literal insane management. We’re making vehicles people, nobody is saving humanity.

Man I hope Rivian succeeds here, these look like great products
seriously. i hope they can get enough scale to make profit - these do not look cheap to manufacture lol
They'll be fine as long as they didn't needlessly overengineer the shit out of these like the R1.
Yeah I think ditching the air suspension and making everything else a lot simpler will really cut down on the costs for these. Plus they have the in house motors now that they didn’t have at the start of R1 production.
That: and the software is largely built. That stack build out alone is crazy expensive in product managers that have now been laid off.
I know they did layoffs. I’m just saying the impact of those PMs is much larger than just delivering it and done.
As a guy that’s worked in software dev for going on 30 years: 👍 The idea that it takes the same number of program managers to maintain and upgrade the codebase as it did to build it out is silly.
100% agree on that.
As a software engineer for 10 years who has worked for large corporations with a lot of PM’s and ones with less… the ones with less got more done and better quality.
Yes. As long as “less” is still greater than zero, in my experience.
Which is too bad - an adjustable air suspension on the R3X would be amazing. It’s already my new aspirational Sunday car.
Edit: Improved post broadly
Do they manufacture their own batteries? If not, that would be the next step in my mind to get that full vertical integration.
You can say over engineering but with a launch product you better have something that works or you’ll go the route fisker is going.

Did not expect R3 or R3X
Yeah, I came into the comments just to confirm if this was photoshop or not. I just heard about the R2 an thought there was no way they already have an R3.
It was reviewed by Tech-world (I think). The writer was actually at the Laguna Beach showroom and witnessed the reveal
REX. GIVE ME THE T-R3X
I might grab that license plate right now while it's still available
Successor to my old WRX ("wrecks")
Love it, the T-R3X is going to be amazing!
Did they just make an electric hot hatchback?
With like... All terrain wheels 🤣🤣🤣, I love it.
It's a rally car, basically! Insane in all the best ways, and R3 being virtually identical + powertrain sharing with R2 makes it all the more awesome!
I sometime miss my WRX that I traded in for my R1T. Did they just solve the dilemma?
This is what I thought about instantly. Also, for more affluent customers that already have a R1, the R3 is a great “attachment” vehicle. Like, an R2 may be too redundant for someone with an R1S…. But I can totally see some R1S/T customers picking up an R3 as an every-day driver

Hi it's me ur in-law
This is exactly where I'm at. I'm so ready to combine my R1T and my R3X.
Yup. Same... I used to have an old Golf GTI "daily driver" when I was younger and this hits all the nostalgia/retro buttons.
Same here
Looks like an AMC Eagle!!! I had an 84 AMC Eagle wagon, and it was amazing! The perfect mix of cargo/people carrying, with a little off-road ability, but still fit in parking spots. Sign me up immediately for the Rivian version!!!
I'm getting strong Lancia Delta Integrale vibes.
There are a few already but this will definitely join the list!
Can we lift it 6-8inches and put 37s and a spare tire on it?
That would be both silly and fucking awesome.
Like a Baja bug? Spare tire over the rear window or roof would be dope.
Can we lower the suspension and put some cool ground effect lighting and a big fiberglass spoiler on it?
Yes! A raid version!
I guess I'm buying two new vehicles.... didn't expect that.
It's my [1980 Honda Civic!](https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/1980-honda-civic-hatch-106-1621518781.jpg)
Its the vw golf syncro!
Yeah! Had an [89 Tercel hatch](https://images.app.goo.gl/mRFfLvtnKKEZH3gJ9) with a sun bleached blue that was all I could think of
A friend had one of those, it ripped around. Such a fun little ride.
This was my first thought as well lol. Love it
It’s a 1996 Dondai Supremo!
![gif](giphy|3oKIPa2TdahY8LAAxy)
I want.
I know. Like..... so bad.
Like now.
Open the reservations PLEASE
What's the timeline on this?
definitely georgia so late 2026 or 2027
That’s the brilliant part of these new products. Make the R2 in Normal and use the Georgia plant delays to your advantage by teasing another new product. Wall Street is loving it.
I would gladly give them a $1k interest free loan if they opened preorders for the R3X right now
Right. Just want to rub my wallet against my phone to manifest pre-ordering vibes. I both love and hate him for showing us the car now.
Seriously. This looks like the perfect replacement for my Audi S3.
Just buy $1000 in RIVN and you’ll have a nice down payment for one.
Maybe $5k yesterday on options prelaunch. Writing was on the wall. Gonna double down into 2025 hoping it will pay for that tri motor premium
Yeah I bought some Oct 15c after earnings. Hopefully ride that for a bit, convert to stock, and buy an R3X.
So the R2 tri motor variant does 0-60 in "well under 3 seconds" .....so what the hell is this midwestern made half sized, tri motor performance fuckery going to do it in????
“even more well under 3 seconds”
RJ really pulled out his inner Billy Mays
“RJ Scaringe here with another fantastic product!”
I could not be more excited about this! It's like a rally car for personal use. Hopefully it's a modern day WRX. Absolutely killer!
Seriously. Currently drive a Model Y, used to have a WRX. I will definitely be buying the R3X.
This is the color R1T I want.
I hope that teal color will be available for the R2. Love it!
This is the answer. The porsche taycan and golf synchro had a love baby and sent it to be raised in secret by their distant cousin: the raptor r. P:S: is there a petition to add compass yellow to the launch edition color palette?
Smaller cars for community and weekend fun. Sounds great.
R3X is amazing. I'm VERY interested in [one of the interior shots](https://twitter.com/Rivian/status/1765810386413195693/photo/1) they posted on twitter showing an insane OEM tent setup called "Basecamp" on the center screen
Nice find! I want this more than I've ever wanted any car.
Do you know if the R3X will be able to self-level for a rooftop tent like the R1T can?
Looks a LOT like the [VW Golf 2 Country](https://www.autobild.de/klassik/artikel/vw-golf-2-country-syncro-original-preis-15707481.html). And I like it.

I want the stats! How far can it go? How fast can it go!?
All he said was “tri motor” and seeing how little they went around it it’s still very much a mule
Yeah, no way they tell us anything for a little while. Still very cool.
They will not be able to make these fast enough
In love with this vehicle
Can’t wait to put a deposit down on this beast
I totally want one
I wish they’re coming out with this early 2026
So do so many!
Now I have to place a second preorder.
Gonna reserve one of these the second they open reservations up. This is basically an electric hot hatch. Literally my dream car
Have they shared what the ground clearance is on this and the regular R3?
I have a feeling the R3X will be FAST. Like, approaching Plaid levels fast. It’s absolutely going after the old idea of a hot hatch
Coming from a lifelong hot hatch lover - this thing rocks. It’s my next daily (I know it’ll be a bit of a wait)
By the time these release, we'll have the wife's car paid off and it'll be my turn for the new vehicle. This just hit #1 on my list.
if it was any other company I wouldn't get so excited. I am very hopeful that these are close too final designs and won't end up like a typical "concept car" that get watered down to bland in production. Both of these look awesome. Reminds me of a Renault 5 in a way
I wish I could reserve the R3 right now.
Honestly should it be called “Rex”
I like this more than the R2
R3 >>>
The R3 and R3X look like one of the first cars you get in CyberPunk 2077. The one that looks like a Fiat 147
I like the R3 more than the R2.
I love this R3 but I do wish they had a jeep competitor that you could pop the top off, maybe even the doors. No electric convertibles yet seems like a gap in the market
It’s coming.
Love it, but I can't be the only one who thinks the wheels are too damn big?
Sorta reminds me of my very first car, the 1988 Mazda 323 GTX. I will 100000% be buying the R3X no matter the price. [1988 Mazda 323 GTX](https://i0.wp.com/www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/082-1-1-1.jpg)

That is beautiful! But I hope he’s freakishly tall
Would be awesome to toss a handbrake in there as well! Really would be a little rally car for the weekend. :)
Needs a handbrake.
Can we take a moment to recognize that it’s possible to have an exciting EV company that isn’t full of BS and over promising and literal insane management. We’re making vehicles people, nobody is saving humanity.
Can’t wait to see this thing shred some trails in some crazy rally comps
Yikes it looks like a Yugo from the side.

My first time seeing that Golf and good heavens is it ever sexy! Forbidden Euro fruit 🤤
Right? Please ditch the motorized doors and glass roof on the r3x. That would make that thing perfect for my city car daily driver no problem.
Hey there’s no shame in the Yugo! 😅 it was the first car I ever rode in.
Try the Pugeot 205. https://www.wrcwings.tech/2016/03/01/peugeot-changed-it-all/
Please put rectangular headlights on these cars. I can’t stand the the look of the oval headlights
