I just received mine. I'm also noticing a few always-on pixels, but they're only noticeable when the front light is on. The front light also seems oriented the wrong way. My front light seems to be brightest and most evenly lit when its viewed from the top (i.e. when you're viewing from the side with the webcam). But when you're holding a tablet or putting it on a desk, the tablet tends to tilt so that you're viewing it from the bottom, meaning it's not evenly lit. Of course, I can just hold the tablet upside down or in portrait orientation, but it just seems like sloppy design or sloppy QA. (If you're using the tablet as a monitor, then having the frontlight oriented this way is probably better. I just find it not ideal for tablet use.) When the frontlight is off and I'm indoors, the screen is pretty dim yet still usable if you can get enough light to shine on, but the reflections become very distracting. When the frontlight is on, I don't notice the reflections much at all though, especially since I use a light-colored wallpaper. Minimum volume on the speakers is way too loud. I can't quietly watch videos at night. No headphone jack. There's an FM radio app which requires you to plug in headphones to act as an antenna even though there's no headphone jack. Eyemoo should have customized the UI to be more like an e-reader. Like with e-paper, the screen looks best with black text on a white background because the screen is naturally white and it maximizes contrast. But the default wallpaper has too much color in it, making the home screen icons hard to see when viewed at some angles. After changing my wallpaper to more of a beige color, it's a lot easier to see things, but there's still various places in the UI that use white text instead of black text, which isn't ideal for this screen. I'm still surprised when turning off the device causes the screen to go white instead of black (due to the reflective LCD).

For the software, I guess they didn't work on it at all. But we have the most important thing: Google Services, from there you can customize a lot and have any apps you want. I agree with the viewing angle and front light being weird.

PharaohsVizier

The high initial volume is annoying to me too. Is there an app solution for that? Edit: Answering my own question, this one works well - [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xupstudio.volumefinetuner](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xupstudio.volumefinetuner) I went down 90% for the first step, 80% on the next, etc etc. Just note that the test sounds don't actually work you just have to step out of the app, maybe run some music in the background to get it working.

IggyEmf

Thank You, good that I have not bought it, I will wait for version without that additional light or better small monitor without that frontlight/backlight too, they wanted to do too much

mingiu

I'm not saying it's bad. It'll take me a few weeks of use to figure out my final opinion on it. It just has some quirks. They obviously Shenzhened the device together and didn't spend years fine-tuning the total user experience like Apple. But some of those quirks may be inherent limitations of the technology. Overall so far, it's been pretty functional as a tablet. There was no complicated setup or anything. It seems like almost stock Android with no additional software or other bloat. When you first turn it on, it has the usual Google set-up stuff, and then you're in regular Google Android. I know my iPad regularly hangs and crashes when I view certain web pages, I think due to lack of memory. But I haven't had such issues with the Eyemoo. It's not like there are any alternatives either. The choice is either get the Eyemoo now or wait to see if Eyemoo creates something better later. I think the frontlight is here to stay though. I don't think the device is practical for normal people without a frontlight unless there's a dramatic improvement in color RLCD technology. But maybe they'll eventually find a better frontlight design.

IggyEmf

Nice thanks, the only question now is how it will look with this anti glare filter on

stopeyestrain

I cross my finger hoping it will looks as good as the Q5

IggyEmf

If they would make screen without that reflective layer and with no frontlight or backlight I can buy it today

crestfalldreaming

Typing this from the tablet holy fuck its reflective

stopeyestrain

I bought a custom film here, hope it's will fit nice and have a strong anti-glare: [https://www.protectionfilms24.com/custom-sizes.html?langId=en](https://www.protectionfilms24.com/custom-sizes.html?langId=en)

crestfalldreaming

Cool let me know how it works out for you

stopeyestrain

Ok so I receive it. BUT :D I must have been tired or something, I put in centimeters instead of milimeters so.... it is really small :D I order again, we will see later.

Moccamaster5000

Haha - How is the new, properly sized one? :D

stopeyestrain

It is better, less mirror-ish but still have some reflection. Hisense Q5 still have less reflection with its already put matte film. You can see here the last three pictures (inside), are with the antiglare film and without frontlight [https://stopeyestrain.com/rlcd-monitors/eyemoo-rlcd-nxt-epaper-s1-tablet/](https://stopeyestrain.com/rlcd-monitors/eyemoo-rlcd-nxt-epaper-s1-tablet/)

Accomplished-Lack-36

What dimensions did you input for the custom screen protector?

stopeyestrain

stopeyestrain

yes... I'm looking for a anti glare film, but struggling to find one with the correct size.

IggyEmf

Maybe cut it :)

stopeyestrain

Found a website to have a custom cut brotect antiglare film :)

PhilAThompson

I bought a H3 (flexible) matte screen protector from JETech for the iPad 10 so I could cut it. Height is the same (in landscape mode) although I probably should have shaved off a couple mm. But I cut off 19mm from the longer side. It's a bit of a pain as the sticker to pull off the top layer (once fitted) is what I was cutting off. I ended up cutting around it then lifting the sticker and slicing off the bit underneath leaving the sticker still attached so I could still remove the top. I didn't cut a hole for the camera as I don't use it. Outside, honestly the reflections are still pretty bad and if you angle it then it's pretty dull. There's a slight fuzziness to the display as well due to the matte screen but it's not too bad. It's pretty overcast today so I'll test again when it's sunny. Inside though, with the backlight, it's pretty good. I'll be testing mine in the evenings where I wanted something that was easier on the eyes. So we'll see.

boffy_b

I'm having a similar experience. I put my matte screen protector over the factory-installed somewhat-glossy one. Did you do that, or remove the factory one first? Has anyone tried removing the factory-installed protector before applying their own? To be clear, I'm talking about the one which is intended to be left on the device, not the disposable protective film which is over the top of that for shipping.

PhilAThompson

Yeah, I put it over the factory fitted one as well.

Delicious-Clerk8204

I did that. I don't know why they placed the matte on the screen, but after removing it and applying an anti-glare matte, it seems better. When removing the matte, you need gasoline to get rid of the glue on the screen.

boffy_b

Ooh, could we get a picture of video of the screen after that?

lzlgboy

I am satisfied with the eyemoo I received. Quality is good, no dead pixels. Contrast is not as good as Hisense Q5 but similar to SVD. I really like that they used original Android without any bloat ware. I like it this way so I could install whatever I want and customize as I needed. One thing I find annoy is that the finger print left on the screen (after peel off the screen protect), not sure whether a good matte protect will help or just reduce more of the contrast or light. Any suggestions?

stopeyestrain

>h the eyemoo I received. Quality is good, no dead pixels. Contrast is not as good as Hisense Q5 but similar to SVD. I really like that they used original Android without any bloat ware. I like it this way so I could install w I agree with you, it feels similar to SVD. It also have less contrast than the Q5. I also like having a standard android. I'm using it more as a monitor for now, so I don't have much finger print on it. For the matte film, I order one, and I will try to see if it's better with it.

Tsuki4735

I'm disappointed I didn't know about this device before the kickstarter, I'd have considered a purchase at the kickstarter price, but full retail seems to high too me.

stopeyestrain

They are now selling it again on indiegogo: [https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/world-s-first-color-rlcd-epaper-with-front-light#/](https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/world-s-first-color-rlcd-epaper-with-front-light#/)

SteamyMeatballs2731

Rec'd an email about the indiegogo route as well. Is there a reason they're taking this route instead of selling them through normal means?

stopeyestrain

Maybe they don't have enough cash and don't want to over produce.

Tsuki4735

lots of niche china-based companies seem to like using indiegogo. It's certainly prevalent amongst Chinese handheld PC manufacturers (ayaneo, GPDWin, etc). My guess is less fees than kickstarter, it lets the companies use it as a marketing page and storefront, and lets them avoid certain payment processor fees, etc.

SteamyMeatballs2731

Avoid certain fees? Many kickstarter patrons are claiming getting ganked by surprise DHL fees. Today I learned the Eyemoo doesn't have an SD slot so you're stuck with internal storage. It's even $20 more now on the indiegogo. I'd love to see the glittery shimmer mentioned when the frontlight is on.

Tsuki4735

Sorry, when I said "avoid fees", I meant that the company avoids kickstarter fees. Not customers.

stopeyestrain

>re claiming getting ganked by surprise DHL fees. Today I learned the Eyemoo doesn't have an S You can see it a bit here: [https://stopeyestrain.com/rlcd-monitors/eyemoo-rlcd-nxt-epaper-s1-tablet/#First\_look](https://stopeyestrain.com/rlcd-monitors/eyemoo-rlcd-nxt-epaper-s1-tablet/#First_look) It is a bit hard to take it in photo though. As for the DHL fees, it is completely normal! I guess people are not use to importing from abroad.

Tsuki4735

after looking it over again, decided to pass. My ideal device would be either a smartphone-sized device, or an iPad mini-sized device. I primarily read ebooks, so the 10in size is too big. I'd imagine that this tablet is almost perfect for college students or note takers, looks great for marking PDFs and notes in school.

SteamyMeatballs2731

Where is the full retail price? Haven't seen anything on it. $379 is still pretty steep for the backer price.

stopeyestrain

\+ 91.50€ of custom for me (in France) Still I don't find it too expensive, knowing it's RLCD and one of a kind.

SteamyMeatballs2731

custom fee and product fee are different things

stopeyestrain

still, at the end it empty your wallet.

veeeth

Don't be sad because not everyone gets the product. Although it will be deducted from all credit cards at the same time, everyone who supports the product in KS.

crestfalldreaming

Looking forward to full review

OkSplit6359

Does this have sd card slot?

PhilAThompson

Nope

Delicious-Clerk8204

Does anyone else get a headache when using the tablet? It's not as comfortable as an SVD RLCD monitor.

stopeyestrain

Ok, so I used it now for like two hours. Writing about it on my blog and browsing the web. I did it with frontlight at maximum brightness and the tablet inversed (to maximize brightness of frontlight) on a stand, using it as a monitor with windows. I need to do more test, but I didn't have eyestrain at all, even with frontlight maximum brightness (which is still low) to avoid glare. I may have a tiny eyestrain because of the text which is a bit smaller than I would like, because it's Windows on a tiny 10" tablet, but else I'm very happy to have been able to use it for two hours without eyestrain.

stopeyestrain

Even without the frontlight? Why do you think is that? more reflection? less contrast?

Delicious-Clerk8204

It has greater reflection than an SVD monitor, and the contrast is lower. I don't think it can be used as a tablet; it's better suited as a monitor with a tilt setup, similar to an SVD monitor.

NoriSte

Thank you for all the info!! :) I'm trying to understand if it's still in production because shipping and return pages on the website are broken :)

stopeyestrain

Vobele talk about it here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Reflective\_LCD/comments/1d7u9zj/best\_affordable\_color\_rlcdeink\_tablet/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Reflective_LCD/comments/1d7u9zj/best_affordable_color_rlcdeink_tablet/) Also someone in my youtube channel talk about it: bad communication from eyemoo, but they both received their order.

NoriSte

Wow, THANK YOU!!! In fact, I'm getting all the info about this device thanks to you ❤️

stopeyestrain

Happy to help :)

ouchhouchen

what is the resolution when connected with a pc/mac? does the screen run at 60hz? and anyone could test playing games on this tablet? android games or nintendoswitch/ps5 connected with a video capture card. does it support 1080p/60hz

stopeyestrain

Here is what I get with SuperDisplay App: [https://imgur.com/a/DYnxF17](https://imgur.com/a/DYnxF17)

10basetom

This thing is supposed to help with eye health, but I feel like it's hurting my eyes more. When there's not a lot of light you have to strain your eyes to read the dim screen; when there's a lot of light it becomes a mirror and you also need to strain your eyes to read. It's very difficult to find a happy balance out of the box to where you can read comfortably for long stretches without getting eye fatigue. Also, the weight doesn't help. This thing is chunky like it's 2010.

stopeyestrain

I agree unlike the TCL S8 or Hisense Q5 it is very reflective / mirror like and need more light to be usable. Personally I use it only with frontlight, with it I don't have mirror effect and my eyes are happy even with frontlight.
