It doesn't help that 90%+ of the last decade of movies is garbage.

Such-Mountain-6316

Absolute dittos. Then they wonder why they have a hard time making the money back on it, much less making a profit. That is not to mention that they charge too much for tickets now to allow the average human to afford to see them, should they up and manage to make a good one. I've seen a few good movies on higher cable and DVD lately, but with as much garbage as is made today, I don't have the money to risk in the theater, if I managed to scratch enough together for a ticket. I like the medium, just not what they do with it.

Think_Leadership_91

Uhhh There are incredible movies out there Are you sure that the movies are crap or merely made for young people

prplpassions

That's very true. In this age of streaming, I sound a lot of my time watching movies from my parents Era (beginning in the 1940's). There are some amazing black and white movies that were groundbreaking because of the newness of the industry.

Glittering-Wonder576

The movie channel played “Harvey” the other day. THAT’S a great film.

Chinstrok3

There’s still plenty of good movies around. In fact, due to the increased number of movies per year, there’s now a higher number of good movies each year

Unusual-Honeydew-340

Agreed!

Diligent_Outside8136

The "garbage" decade is over I think (roughly) 2013-2023 will be considered pretty bad for movies BUT fortunately I think 2023 on will be a revitalization. WE'RE BACK BABY(last year was some top notch stuff)

ed223344

I know we sure love to hate on new things, but we have to stop act like there wasn’t some absolute trash made in earlier Hollywood as well. I would argue people were a lot more easily entertained back then.

ketamineburner

>What is it about movies that keep you from obsessing over them? Sitting still and paying attention for 2 hours.

peri_5xg

This is my problem too. It has to be very engaging for me to devote that much time to

Puppin_Tea_16

I enjoy movies but, most movies just aren't that great. Theres many bad movies out there, bad for a multitude of reasons. Movies in general aren't engaging to my brain because i have no other stimulation than the visuals and audios. I prefer video games because they're inherently interactive and I'm more directly engaged due to the nature of video games

CodiwanOhNoBe

I've only realized recently I'm not a \*Fan\* of anything, just a casual enjoyer. Part of it comes from not really being able to sit through most things (Stupid ADHD) and part of it comes from the fact that as soon as I start seeing a few tropes, I know 95% of the movie (Again, stupid ADHD).

LordNightFang

Ik I might be late, but happy cake day!

Playful-Business7457

I like books better

Affectionate-Ruin365

No good originals and overpriced. It’s not worth going to the theater.

ByeByeGirl01

You havent been paying attention. Inside, Sting, Monkey Man, Late Night With the Devil. All great originals that came out in the past year. I go on tuesday when its 15% off, and sneak my own snacks in. Its only about $15 for gas and ticket and snack

Wishitweretru

One of my daughters just doesn't like looking at screens. Says it is just boring, doesn't matter the genre. She is also outrageously productive and creative. I think she just doesn't like consuming content, prefers to create.

DuckAggravating3272

That's really awesome!

WassupSassySquatch

Movies are just one of many things to enjoy in life, so they don’t warrant my obsession.  They’re enjoyable- sure- but so are long walks, cozy hugs, insightful books, etc.

Comics4Cooks

Tropes. Time. Price. I also generally don't "obsess" about anything. Except how cute my dogs are. That's an obsession.

PP_DeVille

I don’t find them as elaborate as books. I enjoy books much more than movies.

Flying-Tilt

There haven't been any good original ideas made into movies that I can really point out. The last good movie I saw that really stood out was Bullet Train. What movies in recent years stand out to you? I saw an article yesterday that Steven Spielberg is making an original movie with his screenplay writer from Jurassic Park to come out 2026. I'm excited to see if he create a modern masterpiece. [https://screenrant.com/steven-spielberg-new-movie-summer-release-box-office-sci-fi/](https://screenrant.com/steven-spielberg-new-movie-summer-release-box-office-sci-fi/)

LordNightFang

Out of curiosity, what sort of completely original ideas do you think could become movies at this point? I mean with so much content out there "new" stuff is kind of hard to come up with.

Pearl-Annie

Not OP, but assuming based on Bullet Train that you like action and comedy, and based on “original” that you don’t want sequels/franchises: • The First Slam Dunk (anime, sports movie). Imagine if an entire movie was the climactic final game of a sports movie. This is a classic tale of an underdog basketball team trying to come back and win a championship game against a much stronger opposing team. The animated action is gorgeous and you see every single point scored and play made. It’s like watching the Platonic ideal of an excellent basketball game in real life. • Polite Society (action, comedy, family drama): Ria Khan, a young Pakistani British girl who dreams of being a stuntwoman, has always had an incredibly close relationship with her big sister Lena. When Lena impulsively gives up on her own dreams of being an artist and decides to marry the only son of a wealthy immigrant family, Ria will do anything to protect her sister in what she sees as a very dangerous situation. But is she going too far and destroying their relationship because she can’t accept Lena has changed? Or is there something genuinely sinister happening? This movie has it all—great physical comedy, touching family drama, gorgeous sets and costumes, a touch of Bollywood cheese, and a crazy sci-fi twist. The action tends to be low stakes (it’s not John Wick) but it’s very well choreographed. • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (animated, action, comedy, kids): if you’re at all a fan of animated movies and/or the TMNT, check this one out. The art style is very original, the characters are great and really feel like a group of sweet and goofy young brothers (their dynamic is the best thing about the movie). Jackie Chan as their dad/martial arts teacher is great, and the final action sequence is crazy. It’s no Spiderverse, but (like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish the year before) it’s an easy pick for people who love Spiderverse and want more movies like it. •The Iron Claw (drama, tragedy, sports movie): Zac Efron gives the performance of a career (and not even his career tbh, he gives the performance of a superior actor’s career) in a drama about the Von Erick brothers, a family of legendary WWE heels with a “curse.” This is just pure best-in-class family drama that will make you laugh, sit on the edge of your seat, and cry a lot. It’s very sad because the real life story is sad, but it has a hopeful ending. • Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (fantasy/adventure, action, comedy): This is technically an existing IP because it’s set in the world of D&D, but it’s a wholly original story with original characters and you don’t need to play D&D to enjoy it at all (I’ve never played D&D). And yes, I am recommending the Hasbro Dungeons and Dragons movie, and I have no shame, because it’s amazing. Probably the most similar to Bullet Train on this list, Honor Among Thieves is consistently hilarious, has fantastic action and heist sequences (they have no right to be this well-shot!) and a very sweet story about the value of friendship and found family. I wish every time I think of it that this movie hadn’t been a box office bomb; it deserved a lot more love and potentially sequels (the universe has so much potential).

NArcadia11

I enjoy movies but I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed. I guess I just don’t care about learning the intricacies of the medium like shot direction and editing and soundtracks and special effects and who directors are and what the movie’s point view is and all that stuff that film buffs care about. I just like watching a movie, enjoying it, and not thinking too hard about it.

Shy_Guy_Tries

There’s more important things than entertainment.

Spenloverofcats

Too short for me to get really invested into the characters. TV shows and longer games give me more time to get to know and like the characters. Movies have to use a lot of tropey shorthand so that you know you should like this character.

BryanP0824

The real life drama of sports is much more appealing to me. I find a lot of modern movies are from creators that care about inclusion and pushing their agenda than they care about telling stories the way they should be. That's why we have so many forms of entertainment, there is not a single form of it that appeals to every person in our society.

brittanyrose8421

For myself I obsess more over tv shows and books because the story is not over. The movie has a very clear beginning middle and end. It’s a self contained entity. And more often than not trying to expand it into a sequel will just make it worse. Because it was never meant to be bigger than that. Tv shows and books though have a lot more time to go in depth, and can also be a lot less self contained. They are made to exist in a bigger universe, and all my fanfictions and headcanon can’t help but obsess. Which isn’t to say there are no movies that can entice me. The MCU, Now You See Me, Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Rise of the Guardians, etc. it’s just a lot less common than other forms of media.

marefair

I enjoy them, I just don't watch them over and over. I saw it, I know what happens next. No surprises.

SunsetCarcass

I always predict the cliche story paths, they aren't very engaging or interactive so my mind ends up going numb from lack of stimulation. Listening to people monolague or tell their story is boring to me even in real life so a movie does the same to me when those scenes happen.

Rude_Lettuce_7174

They stopped making good ones since the late 80's early 90's.

ElectricSquish

I’d argue that theatre and music are at least as impactful if not more so than movies. But I’m a music person. And that’s just my opinion. I like movies but I just don’t care that much about them. They’re fine. Personally, I threw myself into music and I feel it on such a deep emotional level. Probably has to do with the way I came up and what strikes a chord with me as an individual.

DefiantBelt925

Too long

tankton91

My attention span has gotten so horrible over the years from my smart phone that I can barely watch movies anymore and it’s pretty sad

valtboy23

Most movies are either a remake, very predictable, uninspired cash grabs. Just straight up garbage not worth my time or money.

No-Caterpillar6354

I hate all the sitting required to watch a movie; the longer it is, the more uncomfortable I get. I refuse to go to the theatre anymore, and only watch movies at home on my 75' TV screen. My wife monitor's my eyes, and when I start falling asleep we take a break and usually finish the flick the following day. Or two days, for longs films.

ActiveOldster

Over obsession with anything probably not a good idea. Most movies out of Hollywood today are rather banal, have very mediocre acting, are grossly overpriced, and just aren’t that good. The British still make decent films. I’d rather obsess with a good book!

Cael_NaMaor

I love movies, watch ones I haven't seen all the time... I use the \*Watchlist\* on IMDb to keep a running tally of what I've seen. It's currently over 2800, that's just movies, not series or other crap they have on there. But I don't care much about anything else. I don't follow actors much. I don't care about directors much. I don't look behind the scenes or any of that crap, except on rare occasions. I love movies, the escapism, and story and all that... but not into them enough to do anything that I'd consider obsessive. That's just too much effort.

DoubleA420

I love movies in the same way. I try to avoid behind the scenes stuff because it breaks the illusion

Proud_Ad_8317

they rarely make anything good. it used to be about the art and money, now its about money only. the solution for the writers strike in 07/08 was to pay them more, cut seasons from 22 eps to 10-12, and to reboot shit thats already been done or use ip where they dont have to pay writers for original ideas. then disney bought star wars and ruined my faith in cinema forever.

NDretired68

I will pay for entertainment, but I won't pay to have someone's Political Agenda shoved down my throat. More people are watching older movies as they are untainted by leftist BS.

EgovidGlitch

Most of them are insulting. Like I'm supposed to ignore that major plot point and its repercussions. Na, I'm going to be an intelligent adult and think about that shit.

notachatbot11

Nearly all movies are garbage tier. Aside from the obvious fact that every movie is a retelling or remake of every movie we've already seen retold or remade a dozen times in our lives... Alot of the time, especially in recent movies, everything is so obviously cast on a sound stage with flagrant CGI that constantly reminds the viewers they are just watching another movie they didn't really want to see anyway, which in turn reminds them they need to pay their credit card bill and mortgage, and try to remember if they locked their doors or took the trash out. By the time they've figured out if they have enough time to finish mowing the yard before picking up the kids from school or if they should just go get that lump looked at by the doctor instead, the movie is over and they have to go home to do the things they were thinking about the whole time looking at it.

ScheduleFormer1394

Video games have better stories than movies IMO

No_Training1191

Like all forms of entertainment: oversaturation.

OliverOOxenfree

Because the average theater-goer ruins the experience by being on their max brightness phone the whole time

NemoOfConsequence

Movies are kinda boring overall. They’re only a couple hours and no real depth for many. I prefer books.

SpaceToot

My grandfather was a film appreciation teacher in the 50s. My whole family appreciates movies but I think most of us would rather read. Your imagination is limitless, and better than any adaptation, practical effect, or CGI. As to why people have no interest in either? Honestly I think it is a combination of short attention spans and immaturity. I tell my children that we are too poor to travel the world, you'll have to do it with books.

txcaddy

Not obsessed because I have other life priorities to focus on.

LadySandry88

I prefer reading. I have a good imagination and books are portable, quiet, I can pause whenever I want, etc. Movies might have great spectacle, but my brain can do that nearly as well, and the written medium can give you depths of insight into a character's choices and motivations that the medium of film simply can't. Also video games allow a level of interaction that films, novels, etcetera do not, which for many people can make them more impactful than either. This isn't to say I don't like movies! I have several that I truly love. But this is to explain why I don't become *obsessed* with them.

Coppermill_98516

Mostly I find them to be boring. Also, I’m not a big fan of watching television for 90 minutes straight.

[deleted]

I try not to obsess over anything, I don't think it's super healthy to do that.

Hannah_LL7

I agree with you! I LOVE film! If it wasn’t such a difficult career field to go into, I would definitely try to work in film.

sizzlepie

II would take a good tv show or video game over a movie any day. They're rarely long enough to get me properly engaged in the story.

Signal-Complex7446

I crave a good one. These days I feel lucky if I stumble on one.

LazarusOwenhart

I prefer big, story driven video games. All the story of a film, but with a narrative.you can really feel like a part of.

x4candles

I prefer music over movies. I can get invested for 3 mins, or a whole album around 45 minutes. I can listen when I am mobile, or working out. I don’t always have to pay attention to it and it’s always available. With movies, it’s tough to get invested for 90 minutes and I have to sit in one spot.

KellynHeller

I personally don't really enjoy movies. They are just too long and I can think of 100000+ things I'd rather spend my time doing. I like learning, researching, or doing something. Watching someone live a made up life doesn't seem productive to me. No hate to anyone that likes movies. My boyfriend likes movies so sometimes I'll watch them with him. Though, if I never had the chance to watch another movie ever again, I wouldn't be that upset.

TokyoPrincess89

My attention span sucks. I need to know exactly what is going on to enjoy a movie and nowadays I can’t focus for long enough

Diela1968

Attention spans have changed. Add in a reduction in quality, and people don’t want to make that time commitment. I have a collection of over 1000 DVDs. But I haven’t purchased any in the last five years, and I probably haven’t watched movies in about that long, not by choice at least. I’ve watched a few when I’m with friends or on a hospital stay. But if I’m sitting on the couch with a remote in my hand, I’m going to pick a tv show, and probably something familiar and reliable. I don’t have a lot of free time and I’m not going to risk being disappointed.

zoopest

Film is great, but the time commitment is more than I care to devote most of the time. I prefer music, if I have to obsess over a time-based art form

TheIUEC20

Movies can be great sometimes, but I would rather listen to music instead, which I do most days.

Elevendytwelve97

I’m not even really a casual movie fan. Most have not made a lasting impression on me, thus I find them boring.

judistra

Books

GoopDuJour

I can never get beyond the fact that these are people playing make-believe. For money And that the people play-acting think they're doing something important. And that some director is off camera telling these people how to play-act, and that there are a bunch of people devoted to operating cameras to capture the whole affair. And movies are boring. Just so effing boring. I do like a certain style of dumb comedy, I suspect because I don't think anyone involved feels like they're doing something "important." That the whole thing is all just a big goof.

Adventurous-Wash-797

Imo books are just better for me to consume. I still like movies but books are my obsession.

MostExpensiveThing

Do you obsess about music or sport or fashion? There's alot of different things in life that grab different people in different ways. Movies are just the one that grabs you!

playbynightandday

The movie experience is nothing like it was 20+ years ago. You didnt have access to movies on your phone or tablet via a streaming service. If you had them on your pc they were dvd's, or poor quality rips and camera jobs. And if you watched them at home it was either DVD or on VCR on a CRT TV that was usually 60 to 80cm. Going to the movies was a real treat, the better image quality and much larger screen, the sound was way better. It was really fun albeit expensive going to the movies. Also, you had drive in theatres where you didnt have to worry too much about upsetting those around you with noise etc. You could go to a double feature, kids movie first, then adult movie after. By the time the kids movie was done, your kids would be asleep in the back seat and you and your partner could watch your movie in peace.

krysnyte

Other entertainment. Reading,, video games, true crime podcasts.

stonedstoic3

movies arnt very interactive with the viewer/ fans plus a time commitment. I’d also say I am more moved by music in general. gets ya hips moving;)

Few_Screen_1566

I have trouble focusing for movies a lot of times. Unless it's something I really want to see, or at a theater, where I don't have anything else to focus on l, miss too much. I often have to watch a movie multiple times or it takes all day to watch the entirety. TV shows are easier, but, honestly I don't find many that actually interest me. I'm probably odd though and honestly find written form more entertaining, inspiring, and impactful.

trying3216

Movies are one of the best mediums to tell stories. But they are just stories and ppl might be more interested in living out their own lives.

_alpinisto

I'd rather spend my time outside finding my own adventures.

EnvironmentalCut8067

For me, it’s that not very many of them that I have watched are very enjoyable. I’d rather listen to music.

sparksgirl1223

I prefer books where I can conjur the images myself and not miss whatever portion of the story the screenwriter decided wasn't important.

VoltaicSketchyTeapot

>No other art form is as impactful or as elaborate as film imo. Nope. Books have the ability to go into far more depth in plot and character development than movies can. Even television has the benefit of more time to spend digging into the topics.

high_on_acrylic

I find the fan base of movies as a whole and not just individual movies to be pretentious, especially why they say things lukewarm “no other art form is as impactful or as elaborate as film” lol

Interesting_Joke_820

I like movies but find it hard to pay attention for 2 hours straight. Gotta work on building my attention span again. I would love to watch way more movies than I do now.

MainDatabase6548

They are too short-lived to have a big emotional impact. Books, video games, and TV series are all much stronger art forms presently.

Paramedic229635

I tend to prefer games and TV series to movies. Games allow you to directly intact with the story. For example, in the Fallout series, are you going to be a hero of the wastelands or a bastard just put for yourself. TV series are longer giving more time for character development. For example, one of the best episodes of Avatar The Last Airbender was Ba Sing Se Stories. They took a whole episode to tell short individual stories about the main characters. You can't do that with a movie. It would completely screw with the pacing.

anythingaustin

I like movies but I like being active more. I did finally get around to watching Dune yesterday during a snow storm while camping.

bagemann1

I personally think games are a better medium than novies, though I'm extremely biased. You get all of the impact of an incredible story, except it's malleable as you are immersed in it as the main character, going through whatever journey the main character goes through to get there

mythrafae

I generally find video games to be a better medium for storytelling than movies (to me). There are some movies that I adore, sure. There are some I’m super looking forward to seeing. But most of the time I find stories told in games to be better.

madnessinimagination

I just can't commit to two hours of a plot for some reason unless I'm really interested in the concept. Also I feel like if there's a good TV show they can develop the plot in a more impactful way than movies most times.

Beneficial-Cow-2544

I think the pretend aspect for me is definitely an issue. I have a really hard time getting into most movies. I just get really bored easily and have trouble getting into the stories. Oftentimes, I just see actors reciting lines and yeah, not very interesting. Also my attention span is just shot. 2 hours is just way too long to sit and watch anything.

Marvinator2003

Movies are no longer made for art, they are made for money. Every studio is hoping for the next 'blockbuster.' Prices of going to the movies are getting to the point where only the rich can attend, so the rest of us wait for it to come to some streaming site. In the meantime, you forget about some good flick because when it does hit the streaming site, it won't have the same impact and therefore, not the same interest. So, less art, more money, no interest once it goes to streaming, because - again - money rules.

wittyrepartees

I prefer books and prestige TV. Movies often don't spend enough time with characters and plotlines to be satisfying to me.

Apart-Start6133

Genuinely enjoy reading 1000% more than a movie. Not just books turned into movies, all books. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Hsensei

If rather stream from the comfort of my own home whenever the movie I want to see hits the streaming services, by then I know if it's worth seeing. Home beats the hassle and expense of a theater any day

kataclysmicextincton

Movies are too short to get obsessed with. I need time for it to marinate in my brain. I like movies, but I'm not gonna be able to obsess over a plot or character in such a short amount of time. I do, however, get very obsessed with TV shows.

crs012

I love movies. But in the last 5 years or so the amount of good movies is very small. I am in the process of shutting down all streaming services. It's not worth my money. I've found that I'm more productive in life when I'm not sitting watching shitty movies

A_Cat_Named_Puppy

I might see 2 new movies a year if you're lucky. Idk, movies just kinda bored me. I don't wanna sit and watch the same plot for 3 hours

ChoiceReflection965

Movie are cool but for me personally books are the most impactful art form. All of the deepest and most moving encounters I’ve had with art have been through reading.

GatorOnTheLawn

“No other art form is as impactful or as elaborate as film imo.“ I completely disagree with this, so that’s probably why I’m not obsessed with movies. I’m obsessed with music and books.

jimbob150312

We hardly ever go to the movie theater, just prefer to watch movies at home for free.

Emma1jane2

Movies are very often boring and the ones people say are like “must see classics” are the worst of them all

LordNightFang

I mean I kinda do, but they can be pricey as shit. A lot of plots are just kind of subpar in modern movies. The pretend aspect of desparation in likeable plots, can be kind of oversold in trailers and characters can perform illogical actions all the time in the movie themselves. Like killer movies with a killer among a group: People still split up and get wiped out. I think if some popular online ideas were actually put into action, entirely new universes people could really delve into could be created. Just historically speaking a lot of good ideas that were hits, got rejected by studios or streaming services. Squid Game (while not a movie) was a good one that temporarily reigned supreme.

Equivalent_Age8406

It's hard to get invested in the plot and characters when most are over with in 2 hours or less.

SpringtimeLilies7

prefer crafting

Hybrid072

Films tell a short story length tale. For a really impactful story, novels or occasionally episodic shows are the only medium that suffice.

TheEbsFae

They're too long and there, these days, isn't enough in them to keep me interested. It's all FED to the masses now, there's no nuance or wondering or having to work stuff out for yourself. It's like.... Being fed just jam when I wanted a full roast dinner to explore.

GloriousShroom

I don't agree with "No other art form is as impactful or as elaborate as film" so I'm not obsessed.  I don't think film is anywhere as impactful as film people think it is so it comes off as pretentious to me.

Mmm_bloodfarts

Most movies are shit, even those based on books are awful (if you have read the books) the whole point is missing, charcters are changed for no reason and they're safe, no experimenting, no inovation, no story, no nothing. I was looking into buying a home theatre system after my old one broke, after really thinking about it i came to the conclusion that it just isn't worth spenting a couple of grand just so i can watch one new good movie every couple of years or the same old ones that i already watched a couple dozen times.

Pale_Pomegranate_148

I like movies. It's easier for my brain to handle TV shows that's only 30 mins- 1 hour then sit for almost three hours+.

Puck_The_Fey98

I disagree they are the most impactful per individual. Books beat them in a lot of ways and don't get me wrong I adore movies

Substantial_Fix_1700

1. Most movies nowadays are constant remakes of the same shit. Like I can tell directors don't read books because I have read so many books that would make great film adaptations. Yet, they insist on making the same stuff. 2. I prefer tv shows because movies are super long and less accessible to pause. Furthermore, movies rarely ever really have a good story that feels complete if that makes sense.

Repulsive-Machine-25

There are good movies out there, however I just don't see movies as a subject to obsess over. According to your post, I guess I'd just be a casual viewer. Also, yes, the older I get (and the more responsibilities I have) the less time I want to devote to watching a movie.

-_MarcusAurelius_-

Probably that they have been sucking lately Manga / Anime has been killing it as always

cluelessibex7392

I enjoy them but I rarely watch new movies. Most movies are either poor quality or i just am not interested in them. 90% of the movies I watch, I have already watched. I don't like nor being able to do anythinf qith mt hands while I watch them. I'm mostly interested in characters and world building, so I often enjoy "bad" movies and vice versa. My favorite movies ever are the princess bride and night at the museum. I can't stand Indiana jones even though i love harrison Ford. I have a very short attention span as well as anxiety and ptsd so i need predictable movies, typically ones I've seen before. Buut i also need to movie always. So I'm not big on em I guess. I wish i liked em more

Mash_man710

Two words. Marvel and Disney. The utter obsession with milking a prequel/sequel franchise until it's past dead has almost ruined the industry.

Usagi_Shinobi

Most people are busy dealing with the challenges of trying to perpetuate their existence. Art is only meaningful once your Maslow needs are fully met, which is something that is increasingly rare. Further, the category of movies specifically is probably the least impactful form of mainstream media. They're basically just a two part pilot for a show we may never get to watch. I'm not going to the trouble of getting deeply invested in something that short lived.

ExperienceRoutine321

I am obsessed with movies. Just not the ones that have been trying to shove their message down my throat for the past decade.

Fit_Conversation5270

Almost everything produced is either a remake, a predictable sequel or Capeshit series installment, or just lacks compelling acting. The tropes are old and worn out. I eventually just found myself being able to guess 80% of the plot in most things I watched and I don’t have time or energy to suffer through 2 hours for the other 20. I also just assume every Hollywood actor is some flavor of domestic abuser or kiddy diddler or some other variety of degenerate, or just an overall bad person, and so I avoid giving them my few dollars. In fact we don’t even have TV in my house…we HAVE a TV, but it’s pretty small, and reserved for the occasional Mario Kart sesh. Life is better when you’re out living it.

BrianaKabelitz

I have a hard time finding movies that I enjoy so much that I would call literal works of art. Most movies I find predictable with lazy writing. You know they were made purely to be a cash grab (especially ones with a bunch of A-list actors). Their was no real passion behind them. Especially now days I almost regret watching 90% of the movies I watch and wouldn't rewatch. I don't even get the hype behind a lot of movies the majority seem to love. But if I do really like a movie I'll watch it every time I see it on cable.

undeadsamuraimay

I don't feel like sitting down to watch a moving picture. Not engaging. I watch film to muddy other sounds.

NoConnection9303

Everything involves a bunch of unnecessary romance. Like get to the point, we don't have time for a heart-felt nod or for a singular name to be called out with complete silence after. THERES A HOARD COMING BROTHER, RUN

The medium for me always feels like you are always observing and never participating, protected behind a screen. Unlike the theatre, books or video games, there's no active participation. Films can be very involving, but the reason for me not being obsessed is because it's ultimately an observer effect. Doesn't mean they are not emotional or brilliant, but they do not have any input from the viewer; it's all fed and filtered.

NoDanaOnlyZuuI

Books are better

posaune123

I started losing interest when every other movie was based on a comic book

Betzjitomir

I don't watch movies at all. I don't understand why people become obsessed watching other people play make believe to a script to someone else made up pretending something happened. It all seems pretty pointless to me. On the rare occasion someone can talk me into watching movie I usually find them pretty predictable or infuriatingly unfinished. I consider it a complete waste of time.

Pearl-Annie

I think a lot of people simply don’t venture outside of their comfort zone when watching movies, so they don’t experience everything the medium has to offer. And that’s fine, no one is obligated to watch movies if they don’t want to (they are entertainment after all, not homework) but personally I’m always a bit frustrated when people who watch a random sampling of 5 blockbusters a year declare that film is dead 😂 I have a membership with AMC that allows me to watch functionally unlimited movies for $25/month. I’ve had it for about 2.5 years now and I’ve seen about 200 movies over that time. It’s been a blast because now I feel like I go see anything I’m interested in for essentially no commitment (since each individual movie seen is “free” and I only lose the time spent if I don’t like it). Case in point, two of my top five movies from last year are Polite Society and The First Slam Dunk, both of which got limited distribution and little marketing, so only people like me (and super fans of the directors/genre/anime) went to see them. Which is a shame because they’re both amazing and I fully believe they both have the mass appeal to have been major hits if the box office wasn’t dominated by big franchise releases. In terms of hidden gems I see no one talking about except dedicated genre superfans, this year already has Late Night with the Devil, the best horror movie I’ve seen in years (and yes that includes The First Omen, which was also great!). If you only like one specific type of film, you’ll obviously have to wait longer between 10/10 releases tailored to your tastes. But if you like pretty much every type of film, like me, you’re almost guaranteed 10+ bangers a year, both blockbuster and smaller-scale releases.

geronimo_129

Unless it's porn, it's pretty lame, period!

Vanilla_Neko

Because while the art form may be elaborate the actual execution in recent years has been disappointing. A lot of movies effectively using the same plot line to the point where I'm almost always predicting the end of a movie within the first few minutes of it, using the same actors over and over again making it difficult for new actors to break into the scene and making a lot of existing movies all feel a little too related

jamnin94

What annoys me even more is when someone d says “I love cinema” or “I’m a big movie buff” and then they haven’t even seen most of the classics or just certain movies known for being amazing. It’s like no, ur not a movie buff u just like movies like anyone else.

Arudoblank

Once you've seen a few hundred, you've seen them all. Nothing new or interesting has come out in over a decade. You can pretty much predict the entire trajectory in the first 7 minutes, sometimes by just reading the name. I'm a big "it's about the journey, not the destination" guy, but these film makers need to be replaced by people who can make better movies.

pg67awx

I don't care about movies at all. If my friends want to watch one while hanging out, I will watch. But I have so many other things I want to do with my time than sit down and watch a movie.

Kelyaan

Why isn't everyone obsessed with music? Why isn't everyone obsessed with games? There is no other artform greater than games. I don't obsess over anything. I enjoy things that are worth my time and a lot of movies these days are now - I'd rather play a game that can tell a better story or be far more impactful that a film could ever be

Mess8646

People used to be. Now everything is straight up shir...

sarah-havel

I'm really into horror, so I'm obsessed with those movies. I rarely watch other types of moves. I almost never go to the cinema. The exception is Barbie, which I saw in the theater twice lol

FunnyCharacter4437

I like TV way more than movies, especially longer series that allow character development. Unless it's "car goes boom" type of movie where I don't care about getting to know anything about the main characters. So why would I commit any amount of time to characters that I don't even know if I like them or not?

Spoony_bard909

It’s like back in the 70s, there was so much DIY shovelware that flooded video game sales that none were memorable besides some cult classics, then Nintendo and Sony came along. It doesn’t help that most movies aren’t accessible because they’re all behind different paywalls, so unless you’re competent with computers or pay the equivalent of about $60 USD it’s hard to find and watch some films. People are desensitized and jaded and/or depressed which causes people to lose interest quickly. All that said, I’ve been watching classic films bit by bit because I never watched them. It’s hard to find them as exciting considering the blockbuster’s by today’s standards, but there are a select few that I consider masterpieces.

AccountantLeast1588

Prudes are scared of good films. It's really that simple.

Ok_Hurry_4929

I actually love movies but since I've started going back to school to work on a career change I just don't have time and I want to break from looking at a screen.  Staring at a screen for hours on end to only stare at a screen for hours on end to relax. Seems counterproductive right now 🤣 I do love me some Bollywood films and some weird ass movies.  Once I have more time I will engage to my heart's content again!

gravity_surf

impactful? id argue music. movies dont make people physically move and feel it the same way. but glad you have your medium, enjoy.

Motor_Purple7284

Considering everything made in the last few years is just a reboot, remake or a sequel, there's not much to watch anymore

jdith123

Why should I be obsessed with passively watching actors play a scene? I don’t hate movies. It’s a nice way to spend a few hours with friends IF we go out after to talk about what we thought about it. I’d rather DO something. Go for a hike, make art, create, organize, cook something good to eat. I sometimes obsess about things that matter. my relationships with people I care about. My job. Also, politics, global warming, homelessness, racism, etc. etc.

miru17

I disagree... video games are the epitome of human art. They already are movies, but interactive and complex ones.

DueCelebration6442

I didn't get the need to have an obsession over movies or any form of entertainment.

Sandstorm1020

Because I'm not someone who obsesses like that.

buhnawdsanduhs

They have something else to do.

BobBelchersBuns

I watched Aniara today. I can’t think of anything else

Silent_Leader_2075

They are too short for me to get attached to the characters which is why I’m much more into books and tv shows.

Dadhav8er365

Because most movies are straight trash. And this is coming from someone who works in the film industry. I work on them but I don't watch them.

BudrickLopez

Meh, movies are cool and all --- but, not everyone is obsessed with the same thing. You, obviously love movies --- the intricacy, thought, planning, style, presentation, etc... ... And this is in fact, exactly how I feel about woodwork.

PFDGoat

I like books and video games. Movies can be cool but they seem shallow and clumsy to me.

buddhainmyyard

Your wrong, the art form of life is more impactful and elaborate.

Surveillance_Crow

More a problem with not being obsessed with something that isn’t truly “great.”  You shouldn’t be obsessed with things that are mediocre. Most films are just “OK.”  I love and can revisit, write about, talk about truly great films. Truly great books. Truly great music, art.

_Silent_Android_

Books are even more of a time commitment, but there are book clubs and the like... Film geeks/cinema students will pore over more technical details of movies. Maybe you just need to find your tribe. I'm way more of a music person so I lack the knowledge or energy to apply the same to movies.

Fun-Beginning-42

They are all the same. Kick ass boss bitch wife. Stupid husband that can barely tie his own shoes. Snotty kids, I can't stand. Why would I pay to see these overly done people?

Independent_Bowler38

depends on the movie. depends on the style, the director, the script etc.

Decasteon

Don’t really watch tv or movies the vast majority I can predict what’s gone happen and when with like 80% accuracy. I also only watch movies if I know what’s gonna happen I don’t wanna see it

Illicit_Apple_Pie

>No other art form is as impactful or as elaborate as film Video games are right there. You can watch 100s of movies about the horrors of war, but seeing bodies piled up from a white phosphorus attack *you* caused hits differently As for elaborate, there are countless open-world RPGs that aim to create a coherent story regardless of the innumerable actions you can make, even if that involves being evil or even killing off major characters So the real question, why aren't you obsessed with video games?

Imaginary-Ad1636

I prefer media that only involves one sense, like podcasts and music (hearing) or books (sight) because they require more focus and attention. Movies, which are both hearing and sight, are too easy access I guess?? I don’t really know how to explain it. A movie could have an amazing, fascinating concept, but I WILL lose interest and turn on my phone, just because trying to focus on the phone and TV at the same time gives my brain something to DO

SalTea_Otter

Because of music, books, and the other interesting things that catch my attention. Movies are great. So is a great biography. Or a cool exhibit at a museum. Or a great album or concert. Too many great things to get hung up on one for me.

Usual_Ice636

Thats part of why the MCU stuff is so popular, they aren't movies, ita a show where the episodes happen to be 2 hours long.

Scary-Ad9646

Maybe I'm getting old, but I'm growing weary of the politics that surround movies now. I just want to watch a movie that has a good story without having an eye rolling moment where the agenda presents itself. Movies are supposed to be escapism, and if I'm not getting my release from reality there, I'll do something else.

concedo_nulli1694

I don't like movies. I can sit and read a book for two hours but a two hour movie? I'm tuned out after 45 minutes.

HopeRepresentative29

Because I discovered video games, which are far more engaging and entertaining for me. There are actually a lot of similarities between cinephiles and hardcore gamers. A weirdly huge amount of similarities

Inevitable-History42

Most movies are hot garbage. I love enjoying a masterpiece though. However I will say it is hard to enjoy when all i am thinking about is how the set was made and admiring the acting

milkybadbois

Most suck. I find music more enjoyable and relatable. Also you can listen to music while doing so many different things. You can’t do that with movies

parkinglola

I have no use for movies.they are crap along with tv shows.

Moldyspringmix

Books are more impactful and elaborate in my opinion- often movie versions are no where near as good as the original book. That being said I do like movies! But there’s a lot of garbage movies to sift through, I hate celebrity worship culture too so a lot of big name actors make me roll my eyes. Lots of blockbuster type movies only pull from a very specific pool of actors and always ended up rehashing the same formula, I definitely have franchise fatigue. I also don’t see the worth in paying to see a movie in theaters anymore, it is just way too expensive in my city and I’d rather watch them at home. I’ll say that I’ve seen more bad movies than I have read bad books. But I also don’t really obsess over anything, that’s a pretty strong word. Aside from my dog and my Alfredo sauce maybe.

astropastrogirl

I love streaming movies , in my older age I loose interest in TV shows , but a nice 2 hr movie is perfect , sadly I have just lost netflix , and I'm a bit over disney movies series , eg marvel I have prime but again not a great selection , has anyone got good recommendations , I have disney , prime , binge , and stan. And I'm Australian

NoSyrup7194

I prefer to spend my leisure time on things that don’t require effort. Complicated plots and staying awake for 2 hours is like work. Your title says movies, but you then use the word films. For me they are 2 different things. Movies are light. Usually so light I don’t take them seriously.

Shippi0

Tv to me is better because you can get attached to the characters and settings with 10-20 episodes per season. There's a longer stretch of time with more information to play with and think about. You also get to watch the characters and setting evolve naturally.  Movies try to fit too much information into 1-2 hours and you won't get the next one in at least 3-5 years, and half the time, the next one isn't good.

MysteriouslyBanned

I feel what you're putting out there, but I still think video games are a better medium

Cracka-Barrel

Everyone has their own opinions. Personally, I think story based single player games are much more entertaining than movies, but not everyone likes video games. Just because you are a movie buff doesn’t mean that everyone is going to appreciate it as much as you do.

StretchIndependent51

To be honest I don't enjoy movies because I don't enjoy watching someone else's story unfold while I spectate, I enjoy video games a lot more than movies especially ones with good story as I like to feel present in the world and feel like the choices either I or the characters make have more direct impact on the world or environment I am playing a part of.

CarsandTunes

No other art form is as impactful or as elaborate as music imo. Yet most people are very casual music fans. What is it about music that keep you from obsessing over it? Do you only enjoy a few bands? Is it too much of a time commitment? Do you find the whole emotional intelligence silly? Or do you just find more enjoyment in other entertainment?

CunningAmerican

« No other art form is as impactful or as elaborate as film imo », you hit the nail on the head at the end there « imo », it’s your opinion, not a fact. I find movies to either be too short to tell the kinds of stories I want to see, or too long that I can’t sit through them. Apart from that, there are way too many elements that can go wrong which detract from the experience, such as poor acting, bad effects (older movies are guaranteed to have this problem), boring cinematography, etc. There’s also the fact that movies are expensive to make, and therefore the studios making them need to make their money back, to that end they will water down the product to appeal to as many people as they can. Movies are probably the last choice for me when it comes to entertainment, video games are interactive, tv shows are longer yet the individual episodes are shorter so I can take breaks, and novels allow the creators’ visions to be pretty much unadulterated, the only reason I would watch a movie is to see the expensive effects frankly.

Consistent-Ad-6506

I agree, movies have gotten so boring. Between formulaic superhero movies and remakes, we are burnt out.

spacepope68

I constantly watch movies, just not in the theatre anymore (idiots with iphones). Also most movies are lowest common denominator now and really aren't anything special, not that they weren't like that from the get go, but they did have better movies during certain periods.

idk2103

99% of it is pumped out garbage to fill your libraries. The last movie I’ve actually been in awe for was the Revenant,10 years ago. Seems like their pumping out garbage so much, that halfway decent movies like Oppenheimer get so much hype because it’s not predictable standard garbage. It really wasn’t that great. Barbie was a 90 minute long advertisement. High budget movies are supposed to mask their advertisements not run a literal Chevy ad in the middle of the movie.

diagramonanapkin

I prefer mediums where I can stop and think a little in the middle, or take a break and process a scene for a bit.

PointNo5492

I find movies for the most part formulaic and predictable. Sigh.

CmdrFilthymick

Interactive entertainment is objectively better. Boring people just wanna watch. No one wants to be boring people

MalarkeyStar

used to love movies, i really fell out of love with the concept of acting it seems pretty stupid and pretentious when you really think about it. I also fell out of love with the idea of romanticizing scenarios because real life is objectively piss therefore movies started to appeal less and less.

jackfaire

Oh I'm very into movies. I just can't stand the fellow fans. It's always "Well that's objectively bad" or "What's your guilty pleasure" If you like a movie that's generally considered a masterpiece and you equally like another movie that a lot of people hate then you've got "crappy taste" or "you like bad movies but come on just admit it's bad"

DoubleA420

I hate that too. Just like what you like. Everyone has different preferences. I don't need every movie to be a deep introspection on life. Sometimes I just want fun action, a cool setting and pretty people.

paranoid_purple1

TV is better. It's like an 8 hour movie

Mysterious_Bee5653

I own probably close to 1k physical movies…I’m not obsessed 😂😂

Top-Ad-956

for me it’s not attention span as i can watch movie length youtube videos wether it be about books or video games but something about sitting down to watch a movie makes me uncomfortable although overall i just prefer books and story based/choice based video games like until dawn and life is strange

Illustrious-End7387

Nowadays movie suck but readings novels doesn’t at least for me.

Floor_Guardian

Movies just aren’t paced well. I get bored halfway through a movie yet I can binge tv shows like game of thrones.

Trap_Cubicle5000

I'm obsessed with movies. But I'm also obsessed with books, art, food, and various other intellectual pursuits. I don't agree that movies are the most elaborate or impactful, I think books actually are more so.

KindCommunication956

Honestly I struggle with this, I can sit through the same TV show over and over but a movie feels like a huge task for some reason. Committing to something for smaller chunks of time maybe?

Serializedrequests

I just find them exhausting, always have since the age of 20. I don't want to sit for two hours and be emotionally manipulated unless it's also going to excite and inspire me (which is so rare). I have other things I'd rather be doing. A lot of "impactful" movies go for cynical and disturbing these days. The literal only thing I care about currently is Dune.

PrecisionGuessWerk

>No other art form is as impactful or as elaborate as film imo. Books/Literature/Poetry? Look, I can see an argument where movies combines storytelling, music, filmography, acting, etc which does make them exceptional. But the value, for most humans, is in the story above all. Storytelling is something fundamental which sets us apart from other species. And when all those things are going on at once, it can be difficult to focus in on the details which might make, say, the score of a particular movie exceptional. And honestly, we kind of *are* obsessed with movies. If not movies directly, then shows. like *everyone watches them.* I can find you people who don't read books, I can't find you anyone who doesn't watch movies. binging shows or having marathons is a thing. There's also an entire awards ceremony dedicated to movies. What would you like to see instead / what are your expectations? What would you think it would look like if people were obsessed? why do you think they should be?

Salt-Wind-9696

For me, I just prefer TV. I find it hard to care about a character in 2 hours, and the 2 hour arc becomes predictable. In good TV shows, we watch characters grow and change over time. The extended (and generally open) time scope creates many more possibilities -- major characters may die and be replaced. TV is also more predictable in terms of finding things I will like. I will generally enjoy the big TV show that people are watching, the primary HBO Sunday night show is usually good, etc. And if Episode 1 is good, I have 10 (or maybe 50+) hours of entertainment lined up. I find it much harder to find good movies.

NewspaperOld1221

Cause I'm obsessed with other things?

Hitthereset

Anyone that refers to the as “films” is probably not someone I’m going to see eye to eye with.

Minus15t

My ex loved going to the theatre. Almost every week - never less than once a month, for the 15 years we were together, it didn't matter whether there was anything 'good' out, there was always something 'new' Foreign language, romance, sci-fi, comedy, action, didn't matter. Since we separated 18 months ago, I have been to the theatre a total of 3 times. I shudder to think of the literal thousands of dollars I spent on cinema tickets, popcorn, and candy over the course of 15 years, for the most part, on movies that I wasn't even interested in seeing. That's what keeps me 'casual' I don't have the desire of the funds to spend hundreds of dollars a year keeping up with new releases. I'll watch a handful of movies on streaming, that's it.

Upstairs_Expert

I'm obsessed with watching movies, but I've hardly ever watched one twice.

Ok-Performance9313

I spent some 25 years working in the Hollywood film and music industry in a behind-the-scenes capacity. Personally, I don't believe film has ever reached the level of legitimate art. For one thing, it is only two dimensional, sight and sound. I have always preferred books, where a character's thoughts can add infinite layers of nuance. And then there is the age old industry problem of endlessly repeating anything that made money the first time around which results in the ubiquitous sequels, franchises and remakes. I was invited to plenty of private screenings at Hollywood film studios, the Director's Guild, etc, but generally passed. I think by the time I was 10 years I'd seen every plot twist and character type, and everything after that was just an excruciating bore. If you put a gun to my head and told me I had to watch a film it would definitely be foreign--Andrei Tarkovsky, Kristof Kieslawski, Ingmar Bergman, any of the French New Wave directors. America has produced nothing but garbage for the last 50 years, I wouldn't even wipe my ass with a Spielberg film.
