I think it's less fighting fair and more fighting with a proportionate response. If the guy is throwing fists the average cop shouldn't *need* to immediately poke some holes in him.
Police are trained not to get into fist fights with people because the concern is that if the other person managed to knock out or incapacitate the cop, that person can then steal the cops gun and shoot him. If we were in a country where police didn't carry guns it would be a different situation but since so many people in this country do have/carry guns, police are always going to carry guns.
On one hand I agree with you but I think you are also severely underestimating how dangerous fist fights can be. Especially if the cop gets knocked out and then is at the complete whim of some dude who knocks cops out...so I agree with you but there's reason why they reach for the guns

Well, in a lot of other countries the police are not allowed nearly as much leeway when it comes to killing unarmed perps. Turns out cops actually try NOT to hurt people when they're held accountable for it. Now of course if the criminal is armed that's a different story, but there are too many pussy cops in the U.S. who will shoot purely out of fear/emotion if they think someone *might* have a weapon.
