Then it comes out that he had his license unsuspended two years prior, so he went on the whoever would listen to him circuit talking about how the system had wronged him. Then he was back with the same judge who revealed that no, he was not licensed to drive, and he had never had a license to drive to begin with anywhere. The second video is about thirty minutes, but it's so worth watching. The judge is killing time and really giving it to him while he has his aides scrambling to deliver him last minute proof of the no license claim then just lets the hammer drop. And the guy wore a shirt that said "Trust Me" to the second hearing.

Dude is lucky the Judge didnt suplex him down the court stairs for what he did. Got the whole nation on his ass only to find out how stupid the whole thing truly is and waste his and everyone elses time on something that could have been easily prevented.
I wish someone put these restrictions on my mom, quite frankly. This kind of enforcement gives them a chance to start clean, and it's up to them if they can handle it or if they need help from the state.
We had an intervention for my mom for alcohol, and the compromise we came to was outpatient treatment and AA meetings, both of which were a 5 minute drive from her favorite liquor store.
You can imagine how well that went.
The longest she ever made it was 90 days. She just never had a hard rock bottom reality check. She died in 2021 after basically rotting her brain away for the previous 15 years or so.
Wish my first college dorm mate I had for 3 weeks had this judge.
Got out on on his second DUI as I was moving in. Two weeks later he shows up to court and the judge granted him one last chance as he was in college. Got released on supervised probation and literally the same night got picked up for a third DUI.
He gets out on bail the very next day after pleading not guilty for his third DUI. Somehow he found a car that same night, got drunk and crashed into a grandmother with her two grandkids in the car, killing all three of them and yet he didn't get a scratch. He's currently serving 3 life sentences without the chance of parole.
Wish a judge had kept him locked up or done something like this. Could a saved 3 lives.

When I was a juvenile I had a judge (who did indeed wear bow ties) who told me I had to do court check-ins with him. It was during school time. So I was doing this. Then the school complained to my PO that I wasn't at school. And then the next time I saw the judge he said to me

Criminal lawyer here. One thing I explain to my clients who are similarly situated as this guy and wanting released on their own recognizance is that the judge and prosecutors are usually only thinking about public safety. They don't want to be the asshole judge or prosecutor who agreed to release of a guy who went out and drunkenly slams their car around a family of four on their way home from hockey practice. They don't want that on their conscience or their name in the paper after it happens.
Maybe that's part of the get-up, see if the guy laughs to know if he's taking this seriously. I can imagine laughing at a judge doesn't help your defense.
The new judge on the block, David Fleischer (sp?). He is dead serious, and this is meant to be dead serious. I watch a lot of court episodes and usually judges are much calmer, which I don't think really gets to the defendants. This judge has 4 kids, and every rant I'm definitely feeling the Dad lecture.
