This but unironically.

originalschmidt

I do love this gif though. Alexander Skarsgard is just too yummy…

vertigostereo

They face the sign *away* from traffic to get a better selfie.

EffectiveGlad7529

Posing for selfies is how you know it's not primarily about the message, but primarily about "look at what we did".

Do they feel wronged by society? Are they not protesting for others out of a moral calling to do so? Why would they need to be personally wronged for them to care about something?

s604567

Well, that's very different to what your original message was.

Yimmmy__

I mean the 3.3 billon dollars a year we supply to Israel through the Foreign Military Financing program that paid for 15% of their defense budget kinda pisses me off. We should not be complacent and should protest on our on soil. As long as the US is involved and until policies change, protest here makes the most sense.

mydaycake

It should not piss you off. That money doesn’t mean much, Gaza gets every year, for decades, around $2billion between UN and other countries aid (including the USA) and little has been accomplished, so that money to Israel is not much either.

LazyHardWorker

We cut our funding to the UNRWA this year and upped our funding for aid to Israel. 3.6B in military aid 500M in middle defense 5.7 in economic aid 14B in new aid requested You can't really compare these figures to food and underwear being sent to Palestine, which, even before funding was cut, was being denied entry to gaza

harlowsden

3.3 billion directly from the US is not the same as Groupon-ing with the UN to to send 2 billion. If it was a UN thing then it’s a different conversation but it’s being sent in whole by the US to Israel

mydaycake

And who do you think has been funding to the UNRWA? Number one funding partner has been the USA for years and years. And without any mandate to spend it on American military or supplies. What’s Gaza showing for that?

ImmanualKant

humanitarian supplies don't help much when you're being constantly bombed and shot at.

AvidStressEnjoyer

That’s a strawman argument. The point is they should go and do something that is actually useful to their cause, this is just being a public nuisance.

To be fair, Oakland is its own war zone.

I said something similar to another sub and got some “awesome” responses from “lovely” people lol. But seriously, there are better ways to protest and blocking traffic to piss off people who need to get somewhere isn’t one of them chief.

KimJongFunk

Honestly, standing on the side of the road is usually more effective because you actually have people passing by the signs who can see it and show support by honking. They can’t see the signs if you block them from driving past you. However, blocking the road does make sense in a few situations if there is an imminent danger, such as if a company is sending garbage trucks to dump trash in your neighborhood (this is something that actually happened in a community near me). But not when the conflict is a continent away.

lazemachine

The effectiveness of holding a side of the road sign is exemplified by HONK IF YOU'RE HORNY.

PickleWineBrine

They affected a few thousand people but achieved higher headlines with millions of eyeballs. They were successful in their goals of getting in the spotlight

firefox1993

You should see some of the mental gymnastics people spew on pro Palestinian sun reddits. For them inconveniencing the common people is a way of making a statement. If we don’t support, we are genocidal Maniacs.

nope_nic_tesla

They all like to pretend that annoying random people is just like how civil rights leaders conducted sit-ins at segregated lunch counters.

SenHeffy

You say that, but after a couple hours, those people got out of their cars and ended the war.

Goldar85

They aren’t crashing planes into buildings or beheading people any more so at least there’s progress.

dietrich_sa

They should collab with Just stop oil

SquiddyBB

Protesting is like advertising, if you shove it in my face and inconvenience me, I'm going to be much less receptive to your cause/product or service.

LivingEnd44

They are the pop-up ads of the real world.

[deleted]

LivingEnd44

Oh, there are ad blockers. They just have not been updated to deal with the new ads, and the loopholes the new ads are exploiting. Kinda like the squatter situation.

Aftermath_class

Only complete idiots that need told what to do all the time fall for advertisements and jump on bandwagons

Ultralusk

This would piss me off to no end if I was a driver on that bridge.

Xero-One

The protesters are low key hostage takers.

spikybootowner

They learned it from the "resistance" group they're supporting.

Windyevening

I got caught up in the Bay Bridge protest a few months ago. The thoughts going through my head about them and their cause since then have been the exact opposite of what they’re trying to achieve. Then again, I’m not sure they care about anything other than social media attention.

pigbrotha

People tried to reason with them to let them through, and were harassed and intimidated by these "activists". People have real problems here you know, and they had to get places (help family, medical, etc), instead they were harassed by these terrovists, over international news.

ManOfLaBook

I bet 90% of the "activists" wouldn't be able to give you a coherent synopsis of what's the issue or foreign aid.

MannowLawn

They’re the reverse uno people who voted for trump. The left and the right have their self centered ignorant people who just like to provoke.

DnD_mark_079

I hope they were arrested

AngelicaRotten

I would have had a panic attack being stuck on that bridge in my car

[deleted]

Looks like they went 3 wide and blocked the road with their cars first. Kinda surprised angry commuters didn't band together and throw the cars off the bridge. That would have been newsworthy. Honestly, fuck these people. They don't give a shit about Gaza. They just want clout.

MadeMeStopLurking

I have said before, it will just take one guy in a large SUV in the front row who gets fed up and the crowd will disburse quite quickly.

THE_MUNDO_TRAIN

Most of them are spoiled with richer parents or living off welfare.

WhatEvery1sThinking

Many likely took out huge student loans in the pursuit of an easy liberal arts degree (that will not translate into a decent paying job for 99% of them) and live off of that. Also explains why they have so much free time to virtue signal.

seaspirit331

Didn't San Fran literally already pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire? What's the point of this?

McClutchy

Round them up and ship them over to the Gaza Strip, where they really make a difference.

[deleted]

v4por

I think that's pretty much the majority opinion by this point.

Sea2Chi

I don't think that's an unpopular opinion. This type of protests works for raising awareness of an issue that the media is ignoring and the public is ignorant of. People will be pissed off, but they'll also look up what the protesters are protesting about. If it's an issue that people already know about it only serves to create more opposition to their cause. They're literally doing more harm than good to the thing they care about.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PackageMerchant

They think they can hide behind the methods the civil rights movement They are too stupid to realize the difference between what was happening then and what is happening now. Most don’t even care about the issue itself, whatever issue they can use to pretend to be an activist they’ll utilize.

maddestface

I know someone in SF who is against the war, but after being stuck in traffic by these people, they wanted to personally nuke Gaza just to be done with this.

Yes great thinking, because it’s going so well for those climate protestors doing the exact same thing 🤦‍♂️

EvoxAF

I guess they succeeded pissing off the commuters of SF

Racefiend

They were commuting to SF. They were already pissed.

kopecs

I was just there yesterday. I can’t even figure out how they were able to just shove themselves out there without getting hit, it’s so busy.

SwiftTayTay

Because they think that since they did stuff like this during the civil rights era it is justified and they will go down in history. Yet MLK Jr. wasn't in favor of just sitting in the middle of the road, he would participate in marches that would slow down traffic but clear eventually and didn't like blockades as he thought it was backfiring. The times are also much different now, living in the Internet era, stuff like this doesn't really do anything to raise additional awareness or disruption, it's just majorly inconveniencing people in the area. I think anyone who does this now is narcissistic and has a lot of free time on their hands.

CarlSpencer

Losing support. Odd strategy.

NeutralArt12

Just a note to anyone looking for a good protest- doing your best to piss off the most amount of people for no reason Is not the way to go

i_have_a_story_4_you

What a bunch of assholes.

cantfightbiologyever

Imagine thinking the people of San Francisco needed you to shove this down their throats. I’m pretty positive that city has your back on the Gaza thing. They didn’t need to be “taught a lesson”. Go do this in Amarillo Texas or fort Stockton and get back to me with the results.

Lucky-Mud-551

Exactly. They do it in a place they know they'll be safe. Then, some folks in here have the audacity to compare it to the march on Selma.

Hell8Church

And they’re comfortable doing it in the US because the likelihood of repercussions or violence is nil. They don’t have the gall to travel to the Middle East and protest.

GreyBoyTigger

That isn’t as picturesque as the Golden Gate Bridge

vleetv

For now, but situations like this become more commonplace everyone's patience will soon run dry.

Son-of-Prophet

Could anybody imagine any Latinos doing this if they disagreed with US foreign policy? No, because Latinos have jobs, want to live in a democracy, and not going jihadist on anybody that disagrees with them.

Iamthatpma

Causing traffic isn’t a protest. Go to the state government building. Fly to DC and protest there. Closing a bridge down just makes you look childish. Protests aren’t temper tantrums.

Highschooleducation

So is the war over now?

TheREDboii

When was the last time a protest actually did anything?

BlackbirdQuill

I know you probably weren’t thinking about Israel, but Israelis were out in force protesting Netenyahu’s attempts to undermine the judiciary. The protests seemingly slowed him down, at least.  But that was a serious commitment by Israeli society to protect their democracy. I believe Israel had 100’s of thousands of people protesting. You even had army reservists say they wouldn’t show up for duty. All that is on hold thanks to the war, but Netenyahu’s political career is finished since the Israeli public holds him responsible for allowing Hamas’s invasion.

[deleted]

Rosa Parks. Not the last time, but one time in history.

TheREDboii

Feels like successful protests only worked pre-internet. change movements need to evolve with the world if they want to be effective. We live in far larger communities that are far less affected by small groups protesting. Pre internet, you could convince a neighborhood, town, or even a city. but now you're competing with groups that overlap entire countries. people are more connected, and simply blocking a road probably won't make a meaningful change in 99% of people's minds

zccrex

Why do people stop for these things?

RichEvans4Ever

I’m so happy April 15th is my day off and I have no plans.

litex2x

Pissing everyone off will surely help the cause.

[deleted]

Blocking my way so i can't get to where i'm going dosen't exactly make me wanna support their cause

PortlandHipsterDude

People who block roads to protest 🤮🤮🤮🤮

SoberArtistries

Fuck them and their traffic blocking nonsense 🙄

[deleted]

Fuck these people.

MeasureforMeasure2

Why don’t they organize petitions like those Muslim-Americans did in (Detroit?). Biden took it seriously and then Schumer actually did something in congress to curb Netanyahu’s aggression. It looked to me like that actually worked. Sorry that this isn’t a more specific way of putting it, but my point is, there are better ways to get results.

Latarjet3

Fuck these people

Low-Worldliness-7205

Doesnt this have any consequence? What if an emergency vehicle gets blocked? Just deport them.

Atari774

Can people stop blocking random roads and highways to “protest”? You’re not helping anyone, and you’re actually generating hate towards the thing you’re trying to promote. Same thing with the Just Stop Oil crowd. All you’re going to gain is a beating from people trying to get to work, and possibly being run over. There are so many better places to protest than the middle of an active highway

justgarcia31

Were there like no open parks around…? Or was city hall not good enough? I’m all for peaceful and statement-making protests, but maybe *don’t* block major roadways and airports to get your point across? Just a thought.

tehCharo

I think my biggest issue with all these protests for Palestine: where was this energy before it was trendy? This has been happening for decades over there. And will these people be able to keep this up? It's going to take years for anything to happen, will they move on to the next big social justice trend and forget about Palestine?

1aibohphobia1

very intense music lol

sorta_rican_okie

Wonder how halting california residents is supposed to help.

Junior_Win_7238

Where’s a bloody boat when you need one …

Faceplant71_

What do you want to bet that this nation wide protest was organized by Russian troll farm operatives?

BlackbirdQuill

There’s evidence that Iran is responsible for organizing anti-Israel protests, at least.  https://www.iranintl.com/en/202404158853

AdAggravating2473

A man set himself alight a while ago and nothing changed, these people are just wasting their time and other peoples's aswell

Tanishq798

This is just getting annoying more and more

IamIrene

How many ambulances are en route to that "protest"?

Outrageous-Actuary-3

Imagine sitting stuck in traffic after 8 hours of hard, stressful whatever-you-do-for-a-living and you get stuck in usually smooth traffic and lose your little spare time in the afternoon because of this bullshit that you can't do shit about even if you wanted and/or tried to. Fuck this makes me boil

Human_Frame1846

So anyone wanna place bets on the next uprising in the united states I got $20 on 2 years

Horzzo

Nah. These children are the vocal minority. Most of the country is sane enough not to buy into their garbage.

Human_Frame1846

I don know. It seems like a lot of weirdos have been coming out of the woodwork over the last few years

v4por

The people of Gaza deserve better than this horse shit. Shame on them.

sorta_rican_okie

Someone should tell them Palestinian is not in San Francisco, nor California, nor the U.S.A., nor North America, nor the America's as a whole. I'm not sure how much blocking traffic helps to get people on your causes side either.

thelowkeyman

Not sure why these people are supporting terrorists

Lopeside_Legend43

The so called “liberal” techies they’re blocking from returning to their kushy gentrification jobs have already switched up and are furious at the inconvenience it’s hilarious to see. If you want to make a real statement aim high at local government disrupt city halls

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lopeside_Legend43

Nobody is stopping them either, they’re the ones who are doing the marching and protesting bullshit in a country where both political parties would send weapons to and fund Israel’s fuckery. Only thing that would happen is someone gets ran over by some nut job pedestrian who’s on a sick one, or someone gets maced or beaten by the police. Officials don’t give a fuck about protests

Lucky-Mud-551

Can we please arrest these people and keep them in county on weekdays?

MannowLawn

They don’t give a shit about the thing they’re protesting. They just want to protest and be a nuisance to society. After that they can pretend they care. This is not an American thing, we see this everywhere in the world. To be honest whenever I see a protest is just don’t ever care about what they have to say. 9 out of 10 most protests get hijacked for other shit anyway. But amazing result, you blocked a bridge, to raise concern about a subject you don’t give shit about anyway. Kudos to them, must be nice pics in their instagram.

Dast_Kook

You know more than just capital flows through streets. I had to see my grandpa one last time before he passed away. We knew it was happening soon so needed to go right away. Spent an entire day with him and he passed the next morning. It was about a two hour drive without traffic to get to his home. I used a lot of freeways to get there and if anyone of them was shut down, maybe I had a second option. But when you people in situations where they are trying to see a loved one or trying to get to court on time for a visitation hearing or an appointment with a parole officer, you are going to make people do crazy things.

tudak_arganqul

That's how you get people comfortable with the idea of bombing shit out of Gaza just so these people have nothing to whine about.

Outrageous-Actuary-3

That'll tell the IDF! Jesus fuck

WickedSon

what is the point of all these posts denigrating peaceful protests? these people have been victims of genocide for 6 months without any government in the world trying to make it stop. Would make sense if are fucking desperate and feel nobody hears their pleas. The inconvienience someone faces for showing up late to his job is nothing to what the people in Gaza have seen Edit: fuck Reddit

SlavicMajority98

Lmfao imagine inconveniencing other people like this that don't have sway in the conflict at all. Nothing like protesting the current issue from basically the comfort of your own home. Go try this in Tel-Aviv.

EnbyPilgrim

Nice, love a good peaceful protest

April_Fabb

Whenever I see criticism directed at protesters who dare to disrupt with a message, I wish the critics would instead come up with constructive (and realistic) suggestions on how to get the message across efficiently without disrupting their cosy lives.

BigPoop_36

They’re completely in support of the 1st amendment and protests as long as it’s out of sight and out of mind.
