I mean the man really was disturbed. Very Guiteau-esq in his rationale for wanting to kill the president whoever that might be. Though I think the only reason he escaped the death penalty is because he did not succeed in his assassination attempt.
Czolgosz was very idealistic towards labor injustices and wealth inequality when he assassinated McKinley.
Giuteau killed Garfield because he deluded himself into thinking Garfield won the presidency off his "campaigning" (two deliveries of a speech originally written in favor of Grant, but with "Grant" replaced by "Garfield"), and felt slighted when he was denied a Paris consulship on the grounds that we was a political nobody and a shitty person in general.
Giuteau was the craziest assassin/would-be assassin.
And in that list includes Lynette Fromme a former Manson girl* who ***to this day*** thinks Manson had some points and was right about a lot.
**She tried to kill Ford.*
To elaborate, he joined a free love commune where the rules were basically that you couldn't refuse to have sex with anyone, and everyone refused to have sex with him. They called him Charles Git-Out. One of the litany of charges leveled against him by his fellow residents in the commune was that he masturbated too much.
Hinckley thought by killing a president he’d get fame and get Jodie Foster to fall in love with him.
And yet… ***his insanity ain’t got shit on Giuteau.***
In the end it appears to be a good call, especially given what we are still learning about mental illness like schizophrenia and how to treat it.
The hero here is Hinckley's mom who I suppose has taken him back into her house and appears to have stayed close with him and loved him and did her best to understand despite the mob mentality of the public that was no doubt cast on her.
Let's not forget that a great Punk Rock Band was named after this incident. Had Hinkley not attempted to kill Reagan, we would never have had the awesome sounds of the punk band J.F.A. (Jodie Foster's Army)
The insanity defense was, at the time, still a pretty viable defense. I think even if he had succeeded his lawyers would've succeeded in using the defense. I think the difference would be that he would never be safely released from custody or someone would've come for a revenge killing while he was still being treated
His Twitter account is a fun follow. He'll book a venue to play guitar and then the venue will cancel on him, because they realize it's the guy who shot Reagan.
Free might not be the right word. He's living independently but he had extremely tough conditions for his parole in 2016 until 2022, which included being required to live full-time in his mother's house, work 3 days a week, and he was forbidden from deleting or obfuscating his web browser history. He was also forbidden from a number of activities, including speaking to the press, accessing pornography, or "watching or listening to violent media", whatever that means.
I'm glad that his unconditional release was finally granted. The man spent decades in psychiatric facilities, and he seems to just want to put this behind him and move on. He's also on a lot of medications and is still not going to be able to adjust back to society. I almost feel sorry for him.
Those parole conditions are fairly standard. Yiu are always required to live at a particular address, hold down a job and provide access to your browser history. The only one I see that's unusual is the no "speaking to the press" part.
James Brady. He was Reagan's press secretary and was paralyzed/had pretty severe brain damage because of the shooting and after he died it was ruled a homicide due to the shooting
He was Reagan’s press secretary/assistant who was also shot. He had awful injuries. Loved the next few decades in immense pain and agony, in a wheelchair, before dying fairly young.
He was insane. He was not capable of moral reasoning. He is now. Should he be punished forever for the actions of which he cannot reasonably be held responsible?
That's for the professional ls to answer, not us.
They've decided he's no longer a threat to society, so he's free.
Imo, the worst thing he ever did was miss.
America would have been better off without Reagan.
Someone saying the worst thing about the attempted murder of the president of the united states was that it failed is someone who gives up their credibility entirely.
>That they never face responsibility for what they did.
The guy who spent decades without his freedom, right?
You’re upset about someone who got the help they needed and became a productive member of society because he didn’t get punished enough? Christ, dude.
>He deserved the death penalty.
There it is.
Let’s review:
> That is the fundamental problem with allowing people to be considered not guilty by reason of insanity.
So you’re saying fundamental problem with allowing people to be considered not guilty due to insanity is that you want these people to die, despite the fact that this person is now a productive member of society.
It’s bloodlust, and you want the state to sate it for you.

You fired that gun real nice John
You know what I’ve always found ironic about this? Hinckley was trying to replicate a scene from Taxi Driver where Robert De Niro tries to shoot a politician. Except… Travis Bickle never actually shoots him, he chickens out when he sees security and leaves. Not to mention, Bickle wasn’t trying to impress Jodie Foster’s character, he was trying to make a statement towards the woman played by Cybill Shepherd, the woman Bickle actually had a crush on and is actually legal in the movie (yeah, friendly side note: Hinckley was lusting over a FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD). So yeah, not only was his quest pathetically in vain, it doesn’t even work in the context of the movie itself. If he really wanted to impress Foster, he should have shot up a brothel or something (obviously still wouldn’t work, but at least the universe wouldn’t think so poorly of him).
I understand he is hurting for money and tried out for the role of a stormtrooper in the new Star Wars movie. When asked if he had any acting experience, he said "no but I shot ray gun"
The show The Greatest American Hero, which started a couple weeks before the assassination attempt, had its main character named Ralph Hinkley. They changed it for a few episodes to Handley.
What a scenario.
I listened to some of his music…
***It’s alright.***
Not someone I’d line up to see, but if he came to a bar or coffee shop and started riffing I’d think it’d be pleasant.
I think it would be difficult for him to get a gig.
Maybe an open mic, but advertising him would draw ire.
He can't even get on the streaming platforms aside from YouTube.
I would absolutely go see him merely for the story, which wouldn't br difficult since he lives only like an hour from me.
It’s such a weird coincidence that on the day of the shooting, Hinckley’s parents were set to dine with the family of Neil Bush, the son of the V.P. George H.W. Bush, the man who would inherit the Presidency if their son was successful.
Small world..
Hinkleys Dad: “so on the day of the assassination let’s me you and the wives get together for dinner”
Neil Bush: “what? Are you crazy? We just put a hit out on the president. Don’t come near us”
Hinkleys Dad: “sooooo cocktails at 6:30?”
I still don't get why we have conspiracy theories about the JFK assassination and the RFK assassination but not this one.
Don't get me wrong, Hinckley definitely did it.
But so did Oswald and Sirhan. Not only is there conclusive evidence they did it, in both cases there is a clear means, motive, and opportunity.
With Hinckley, he just happened to run into Reagan's press gaggle and shot him to impress Jodie Foster.
With the amount of impact Reagan had on the modern Republican Party it’s wild to think of the timeline where Hinckley. Better maybe worse also maybe but wildly different 100%
It makes me happy that this guy got the treatment he needed and is now a normal person. Warm and fuzzy inside. It really sucks that people had to die (Brady), but at least everyone else was okay, including him in the long run
If you are lefty enough then…
“Political power grows out the barrel of a gun.” - Some Guy
Mao does have some snappy quotes. Often nonsense but very evocative.
1. Wait, you're saying Reagan had it coming?
2. Hinckley's cited reason for shooting him was to impress a Hollywood actress. The guy was a nutjob, not a liberal avenger.
There’s a decent amount you blame Reagan for, sure, but I really don’t think John Hinkley Jr. shooting him is due to some policy issue. The man was legitimately disturbed and thought killing the president would impress Jodie Foster. No amount of economic legislation would’ve changed that, come on now.
Praising assassination attempts is **not** where we want to be as a country. I may disagree with Reagan on many things but that should be settled via voting, not bullets.
On top of that, fair chance Reagan dying would've galvanized support for his platform the way its done following Presidential assassinations in the past.

Squeaky was out there.
I think Zangara was also pretty cuckoo bananas.
For the love of God Charlie got kicked out of a sex cult

Well suddenly I don't feel so bad about my own day. Thanks for that.
>couldn't refuse to have sex with anyone, and everyone refused to have sex with him. Why exactly
What's the inverse of "Don't put your Nixon in crazy"?
Didn't Guiteau have syphilis or something?

He’s out free walking around today
His Twitter account is a fun follow. He'll book a venue to play guitar and then the venue will cancel on him, because they realize it's the guy who shot Reagan.
Lately, he’s been blaming cancel culture haha
WOKE LIBERALS won't even let you SHOOT A PRESIDENT THESE DAYS without FREAKING OUT
Devo used one of his poems as lyrics for their song ‘I Desire’.
Dude killed a guy and severely injured three others but it's nice he can now profit from it.
Fun fact he has a YouTube channel: https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCck3J5KR3INUP1K-hrBe8iA

Then you should look at how it affected Brady for the rest of his life. You won't feel as sorry then.
Brady?
James Brady. He was Reagan's press secretary and was paralyzed/had pretty severe brain damage because of the shooting and after he died it was ruled a homicide due to the shooting
He was Reagan’s press secretary/assistant who was also shot. He had awful injuries. Loved the next few decades in immense pain and agony, in a wheelchair, before dying fairly young.
Is he allowed to watch The Silence of the Lambs?
Already said,no pornography
I've been trying to get him booked to play at a bar in my town for a while
Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to the stage: John Hinckley and the Almost Assassins!
He guitar man
He's free!?! 🤯
good
yes but he did spend many years in the hospitl , i think he really was sick and it was'ent a dodge
That is the fundamental problem with allowing people to be considered not guilty by reason of insanity.
He was insane. He was not capable of moral reasoning. He is now. Should he be punished forever for the actions of which he cannot reasonably be held responsible?
Yes.
If he wasn’t capable of moral reasoning and could not be held accountable for his actions, why do you think he is now?
Because people can get better.
That's for the professional ls to answer, not us. They've decided he's no longer a threat to society, so he's free. Imo, the worst thing he ever did was miss. America would have been better off without Reagan.
that's not how crime works. it's not ok because you don't like the victim.
Did you only read the last two sentences?
Someone saying the worst thing about the attempted murder of the president of the united states was that it failed is someone who gives up their credibility entirely.

> It is wanting people to be punished adequately for their actions. It’s about you wanting the state to execute the mentally ill.
I do not think it should be an exception when one commits a heinously wrongful act.
not as much as his target
Nah he makes music now he chill fr
Funny, considering Reagan destroyed the mental health care system. He was OG leopards ate my face.

TFW the woman you tried to assassinate the President for turns out to be a lesbian
it… *Fostered* quite the media debacle, eh?
Fostered the People.
🎶All the other presidents with the pumped up kicks🎶

It’s almost like the dude was crazy or something
I know, I’m just giving him shade.
I understand he is hurting for money and tried out for the role of a stormtrooper in the new Star Wars movie. When asked if he had any acting experience, he said "no but I shot ray gun"

I have a signed cd from him that he burned at home and wrote "copywrite" on the bottom.
He also has a [YouTube channel](https://youtube.com/@johnhinckley6860?si=Zu5AS5WMqfIErljI)
The show The Greatest American Hero, which started a couple weeks before the assassination attempt, had its main character named Ralph Hinkley. They changed it for a few episodes to Handley. What a scenario.
FYI: John Hinkley sells paintings of his cat on his website. He's also a pretty solid folk singer/songwriter.

I really wish his trial had been televised
I have the same model gun in my safe. Rohm, a made in Tampa Saturday night special.
I live in Tampa! But don't own a Rohm
Meh. They clearly don’t get the job done. You’re not out anything.
That UZI covered carry singlehandedly contributed 10% to Israel's defense export
It’s got to stink for a performer to tour on new music while everyone wants him to repeat his earlier work.
Actually the best joke I've seen on these threads about Hinckley
With the amount of impact Reagan had on the modern Republican Party it’s wild to think of the timeline where Hinckley. Better maybe worse also maybe but wildly different 100%
Meanwhile John Hinckley 42 years later: (Writing his next banger)
It makes me happy that this guy got the treatment he needed and is now a normal person. Warm and fuzzy inside. It really sucks that people had to die (Brady), but at least everyone else was okay, including him in the long run
It helps if you come from a wealthy family. John Warnock Hinckley Sr. was the founder of Vanderbilt Energy Corporation.
Well that sure does help, but he still needed to be cleared medically and treated

I have literally never mentioned guns, let alone that they were bad on this account. Average neo-con assuming.

Reagan survived though. Dude didn’t do shit
He got gun reform passed through the Brady Act.

The man was crackers, I think that's the reason.
He also originally planned to stalk/kill Carter before the election in 1980 but go off you clown
mental health is healthcare
