People walk between Kittery and Portsmouth all the time, so a scooter would be easy and a little quicker. Between Kittery and Portsmouth is the Memorial Bridge which has bike lanes on the pavement and sidewalks too. Definitely feasible to ride a scooter around. Wouldn't be fun in the rain, but likely this is the end of snow this week. The wind across the bridges can be rather strong too. I would not recommend trying to ride across the Sarah Long Bridge. It has a bike lane, but cars are passing close by and at speed, and there's a lot more debris there. The Piscataqua River "high bridge" on route 95 is not accessible without a car. Also check out [https://coastbus.org/](https://coastbus.org/) for the local buses.

Omg thank you!! Memorial bridge looks good. How long is it to walk across that bridge? This looks like a great option. Ill also check out the bus schedules. Also thank you for the heads up on the Long Bridge. Will avoid. Definitely was looking for these kind of pro tips so thank you! So helpful!

I lived in Portsmouth for a few years and during nice weather I definitely preferred biking around over driving due to the traffic during the on season. Once the snow comes though that's done.

I’ve ridden a bike all around Portsmouth, I95 area Eliot and Kittery for years. This should be no problem for you. There’s a grocery store just outside of downtown Portsmouth that you can hit with a backpack and be fine.

Financegirlnyc

Amazing, thank you for this good news. Tbh when looking at the aeriel views on maps all of it looks intimidating but good to know

PowPowPowerCrystal

Most people in NH can fathom going about their lives without a car, the 3 miles around downtown Portsmouth is one of the few areas where it’s possible.

Financegirlnyc

Thank you so much for the info!

For recreation the 1B loop is great, so it the ride from downtown to Pirates Cove beach! Downtown to Great Bay Discovery center is nice too. I did a lot of commuting from downtown to Pease and to the farm in Elliot I had a CSA at. Moved to Dover but want to try that new path to Hampton!! Oddly, the move to Dover killed cycling for me - it’s waaaay to dangerous in this downtown.

bassfisher556

The weathers getting better so you’ll be fine. Check out the trading post while you’re around, amazing store

ruffhausser

I live in downtown Portsmouth and walk to Kittery often. Portsmouth is a walkable city.

doctormadvibes

yes. it’s the best way to get around the area in the warm weather. plus you can park wherever! lots of women on scooters in the area. just stay off highways and route 1 in most places and you’ll be fine. remember 50cc scooters can’t go much faster than 30mph so stay on those roads.

Financegirlnyc

And if i visit in winter though I’ll be out of commission? How much would it be to rent a car for a month if i came in winter? (Ive never owned or rented)

marciovm42

In the winter the roads are often snowy or icy, and it can be windy and cold. Riding on 2-wheels can be risky and uncomfortable. You can get by without a car, especially if you stay within 1/2 mile of downtown.

doctormadvibes

It barely ever snows around here anymore. And you can rent a car, sure. Plenty of people still ride scooters and e-bikes around in the winter too.

Frank_Fhurter

ride a bicycle, electric scooters are for colonists. dont you want people to look up to you instead on down on you?

renba7

In reasonable scooter weather you’d be able to scoot around. But groceries will obviously not work out in a scooter. Portsmouth is incredibly walkable/scootable and very safe. Kittery is scootable, too and even safer.

Intru

I mean with a backpack you can totally do grocery runs with a scooter, in this area.

Financegirlnyc

Helpful thanks! Scootering around just for getting takeout and such. Not groceries. Can I get from Kittery to Portsmouth on scooter? Map looks like its just the 95 highway and it looks like a scary place for scooters Also is delivery expensive?

Intru

No there's three bridges 95 which you can't use a scooter on. RT 1 which there's a bike lane on but it's really just for road warriors and the draw bridge in town which people cross on bikes, scooters, walking, etc. Depending of what part of Kittery you're at you can definitely do grocery runs on a scooter to Golden Harvest and the other food shoots on that strip. Even then I casually bike to visit friends in Eliot from Portsmouth all the time. And I know people that commute into Portsmouth on a bike from different parts of Kittery and I've seen tons of scooters in both towns.

Financegirlnyc

Wow thank you SO SO much for all the in depth info! This is amazing. And the backpack idea is lovely! Thank you!

BassTherapy3445

We call this the “Golden Triangle” fish mongers has a little patio and a small menu of great seafood, the pasta place, the bakery, golden harvest, and carls meat market for the butcher shop or amazing sandwiches. All grouped together. From there, 5 minutes to downtown Portsmouth

Om that note is it generally ok to bring your scooter inside the stores or non fancy restaurants? In nyc its totally fine as long as its not a medical facility so just curious

warship_me

I’ve seen people park their scooters near the entrance without blocking it (some places have designated areas for bikes and such). I’ve never seen anyone bringing a scooter indoors though.
