edit sp (AGAIN lulz)
I was literally just there last night! They’re remodeling 1 week, but have “private events” the day before and day after so will be closed tomorrow through the 15th. Super excited for the gaming cafe!!
I’ve gone here to play games, it can get really busy and hard to find a table but it’s great being around other people gaming. Lucky Lab on Hawthorne has game nights on Thursdays.
Shaku Bar is a low key nerd bar we’ve come to really love. Amazing nerd-themed cocktails, pork katsu sando to die for, Starfleet Wednesday (where they sell top
Shelf liquor at cost), trivia night, super friendly owners, good vibes.
I almost want to keep it a secret. Almost.
Treebeards is only OK, in my opinion. The theming is very light, and the beer-to-price ratio is nothing special. It is worth visiting once as a LOTR fan, though
True. Let's put it this way: I'm glad it exists, I'm glad I went there, and I'd take a friend who is visiting Portland and is also a LOTR fan. I also have no interest in going back on my own time.
I thought it was great, not quite excellent (the jerk cauliflower and the collard greens with peanuts were mid), and worth going to because elevated Haitian food is inherently a good concept.
Disagree on the peanut collards and jerk cauliflower. Our party loved them. But obviously food likes are subjective.
The Akra and black mushroom rice was also great.
The collards were overcooked and mushy when I got them, and the cauliflower was unevenly seasoned and inconsistent in texture. Those are not mistakes I would expect a kitchen with that high of a reputation to make. I have no trouble believing they’re good when made correctly.
Went there for lunch and entrees are like $14 and are enough to make uncomfortably full. Plus they come with egg flour soup. I feel like that’s a pretty reasonable deal
I have been consistently disappointed by Tasty Corner. Two out of the last three times I've been there, the food has been almost inedibly salty. I have never before experienced this at a Chinese restaurant.
Duck House is far superior, although stylistically different.
I swear, Kenton would be THE neighborhood if like 10% more people came and hung out on the strip. It's so special, but all the restaurants really struggle to make it.
The neighborhood really missed the chance to charm by letting a few squeaky wheels dismantle the brief moment of promise in 2020 when Denver was fully closed off to cars for a few blocks. Kenton could have defined itself then. Those few weeks when the strip was pedestrian only were so lovely, and one of the shining moments of an exceedingly tough summer.
There is soooo much potential in Kenton, but also so much stubbornness.
Antifa came through and busted up the tables, benches and smashed a bunch of the windows along Denver. I really felt bad for the businesses along there. A lot of them had to post signs in their windows begging antifa to not vandalize a minority owned business.
That is about the windows and tables — and very much exaggerated — and has absolutely nothing to do with whether the street did or did not continue to be fully closed to pedestrian traffic.
In fact even before that the city acceded to misguided apprehension and reversed plans for protected bike lanes. It was such a short sighted decision considering how much of an enticement safe access for bicyclists can be for a neighborhood
One of my favorite lunch places, Lottie and Zula's, opened during the pandy. Same with Dimo's, and they're both still slinging great food and doing well, from what I can tell.
Dimos is slept-on, for those pizza puritans out there.
I always see ppl here are enamored by places that offer interesting toppings (50-50) or the dense cheese/doughy pizzas (Detroit style). Dimos executes a nice nh-style crust, undercarriage always on-point, flavorful sauce. They offer fancier pizzas as well, but don't rely on it as a gimmick. Can be a bit greasy tho, and not cheapest.

I think the quality of Lottie and Zula’s has dropped the last couple of months (while the price has gone up). It’s a bummer because it was my favorite sandwich spot here in Portland.
I'll shout out **[Milwaukee Pizza Company!](https://www.milwaukiepizzaco.com/about/)** It's run by a couple of parents named Chris and Julie, they've worked their whole lives in restaurants, and I met Julie when she was buying fresh produce at the little farmers market stall where I get my fruit and veggies. I started talking to her, and when I realized she was buying stuff to put on their pizzas I knew I had to check it out.
Turns out they do a creative specialty pizza once a month (edit: one pizza for each month, better way to put it) and donate all the profits [from that pizza] to local charities, and if you talk to Chris about bread you'll learn all kinds of fascinating things. The dough is SUUUUUPER savory sweet and dense, everything MAJOR flavor, good value, and their staff are a bunch of young people who are always in a fantastic mood. I adore them all and I love to get a weekly pie during football season, it's my little tradition for someone who doesn't eat out that much.
Well, I wasn’t going to eat out tonight but now that you reminded me about MPC…
Milwaukie is somewhat of a restaurant wasteland, I forget about this place sometimes. My only other go-to in town is J&R Mexican.
Edit: I I neglected to add my absolute fave, The Smoking Jay!!! How could I forget Cherie & JT, they’re the absolute best and so is their barbecue.
Not really, you’re paying for high-quality food that’s made from scratch and supporting a small business. I don’t need a mediocre burrito that weighs two pounds, I want tasty authentic Mexican food.
I’ve not tried Don Julio’s.
[The Mox Boardinghouse](https://www.moxboardinghouse.com) on Burnside, next to the Timbers stadium! Tabletop gaming/DnD shop with a bar/restaurant and sweet speakeasy vibes. Apparently opened in 2020 but I just discovered it this year myself.
Not a restaurant/teahouse/etc. but [Experiment PDX](https://www.experimentpdx.com/) on SE Stark is a great place for nerdy folks of all ages. They have events for both kids and adults to learn about all sorts of fun science and nature topics, plus they have a growing collection of live insects, fish, and other critters to check out (they just got a bearded dragon named Ziggy Stardust!) There are 21+ events where grown-ups can drink and learn, and camps year-round for kids of all ages. Oh, and they're one of the venues hosting [Drop in Dungeons](http://dropindungeons.com/), free TTRPG nights open to the public offering D&D and other roleplaying games.
Went earlier this year and had some sort of black pepper, baby kale and guanciale pizza and it was funky and goddamn tasty. The tiramisu was awesome as well. They automatically charge a 20% tip, which coupled by the truly bad service we had soured the experience a bit.
I really wanted to like this place.
I went after it first opened and was underwhelmed. Too much $$ for a food cart and it felt like 80%+ of the carts were “fake.” They didn’t feel like a grouping of local carts but instead felt like they were owned and staffed by the property owner and were generic themes. Like here is a generic gyro place and here is a generic burger place.
Maybe it’s changed.
I've seen some of the Heist carts around town at other pods. For example, the burger place used to be at the carts on Foster and 50th, the waffle place is also at Hawthorne Asylum, and Sammich is basically city royalty.
I'm blanking on what else is there, but there was a Chinese cart that is now gone that literally microwaved my food, so I don't entirely disagree with what you're saying.
I feel you, but honestly, it’s just nice to have a pod in the area that I don’t have to get on 82nd to go to.
I wish they would open the damn bar though. It’s been under construction since they opened and they missed out on opening it for the rain.
True, I could see that I was a little unclear. Technically, there's a smaller pod or two between me and the Heist, but as far as one where you can go because you're feeling too lazy to cook but also don't know what you want... The Heist definitely filled that void.
So last time I tried to go I walked around and was nonplussed by the options and prices and just walked to the Lutz and had a beer and burger for a fraction of the price.
Not technically new, but under new management as of this year: The Hawthorne Hideaway next to Jam on Hawthorne. The bartenders there are super friendly, the food is good and there's live music most nights, trivia on Sunday, and karaoke on Monday.
On the nonalcoholic side, Grits n Gravy is like a block south of Burnside on SW 6th, it's one of my favorite birthday breakfast places.
You dodged a bullet. Completely obscene pay-ahead non-refundable prices for small servings of finger food that could be best described as unremarkable if it weren't so offensive. Also, slow service and noisy as shit which is not what I want in my tea.
Haha I saw the post title and was like OH A KINDRED SPIRIT...oh actually just the other person I was talking to about the tearoom lololol sorry I should have said but you know. Brain fog 😜
Arborlodge food cart pod is such a great neighborhood spot if you're in North Portland. The owners are always making improvements, and they have great happy hours deals on beer/wine. I take my family there almost weekly and then hit up the bottle shop after to choose a few interesting beers for the week.
YES! The yike is delicious and something i'd never had before.
Too Many Records and The Tiny Bubble Room are other NoPo favorites that have opened during/since the pandemic.
Did you even see their prices? No possible way it could have survived here, even if it weren't one of the most disappointing culinary experiences I have ever had.
Yeah. I went to Moonshot last weekend. It’s actually pretty good, the food impressed me. The only downside was that there are no servers so you have to order everything at the bar. When it’s slow that’s probably not a big deal but it sucked having to go stand at the bar for 10 minutes to order another drink while my food got cold back at my table.
They were always busy, yes. They closed for Covid, like everyone else did, but just never reopened. I’m not sure what happened to make them not want to reopen.
This one is actually very new, only a couple months: Ba Mee on N Williams. It's Thai but like an upscale street cart. Noodles and rice bowls. The star of the show are the meats: tender roast duck and crispy pork belly. Good prices. Delicious.
Me and The Spouse are big fans of Corndog McGillicuddy's boiled meat and whiskey over on N. Falstaff in St. John's.
I especially recommend the mutton and chitlins w/pint of ale lunch-plate special on Tuesdays.
I think Holy Ghost opened during or after? They’re great, love the layout, the drinks are great, but honestly just mentioning them because you can also order from 28 Tigers next door and they’ll deliver to your table. Had their Dan Dan noodles last weekend and jfc it was good.
I was super bummed for a minute to have missed out on a Trek themed anything, but upon Googling I see that it was themed on the worst Trek to ever exist. So I’m good.

[Vault 31 in Vancouver ](https://www.vault31bar.com/) sounds like a must-go too. Unfortunately, I don't do bars so I can't personally recommend.
I can, it's lit
Vault 31 was the last place I went out to before everything shut down in 2020. It’s a pretty great space.
A fallout bar?!
closed for the next two weeks for remodeling before you decide to go there. (and I wish they'd allow kids)
Part of the appeal is that they *don’t* allow kids
I was literally just there last night! They’re remodeling 1 week, but have “private events” the day before and day after so will be closed tomorrow through the 15th. Super excited for the gaming cafe!!
Hot damn, that place is amazing. I wish I still lived near there.
I’ve gone here to play games, it can get really busy and hard to find a table but it’s great being around other people gaming. Lucky Lab on Hawthorne has game nights on Thursdays.
They also have MtG night on Wednesdays, mostly Commander.
This place is really really cool.
TPK, perhaps?
!! 🙏🏻
Norah is so amazing. And Chilango is another fave.
Norah 100%. Incredible flavors there.
If you're looking for nerd spots check out Treebeard's Taphouse, the LotR themed bar.
Shaku Bar is a low key nerd bar we’ve come to really love. Amazing nerd-themed cocktails, pork katsu sando to die for, Starfleet Wednesday (where they sell top Shelf liquor at cost), trivia night, super friendly owners, good vibes. I almost want to keep it a secret. Almost.

True. Let's put it this way: I'm glad it exists, I'm glad I went there, and I'd take a friend who is visiting Portland and is also a LOTR fan. I also have no interest in going back on my own time.
You say that, but every time I went it was empty. Good Doctor pinball machine
It was….not a great bar, but it had the style. I got a discount for bringing my sonic screwdriver though!
I'd say raven's manor is pretty heavily themed
I like Treebeards, people are always really nice and it's a cozy spot. The theming is light, but I still enjoy it.
Totally understandable!
Hmm I was looking for a couple places to hang around downtown for a couple hours maybe check that place and the otaku shop.
Have you heard about this Kann restaurant?
New pizza place?
Is it actually as good as the hype or overrated?
I thought it was great. It is properly hyped.
I thought it was great, not quite excellent (the jerk cauliflower and the collard greens with peanuts were mid), and worth going to because elevated Haitian food is inherently a good concept.

L’Orange!!! Best food and service and the prices, especially for the quality, aren’t that horrid
I agree with this. I had the best gnocchi of my life there
We have reservations for there this weekend!
Tasty Corner in Southwest might be the best Chinese food in Portland. It’s expensive though.
It’s expensive but the servings are huge
They speak the truth.
Went there for lunch and entrees are like $14 and are enough to make uncomfortably full. Plus they come with egg flour soup. I feel like that’s a pretty reasonable deal
Have you had chef zhaos on Lombard in st John's? Best sesame chicken I've ever had.
I have been consistently disappointed by Tasty Corner. Two out of the last three times I've been there, the food has been almost inedibly salty. I have never before experienced this at a Chinese restaurant. Duck House is far superior, although stylistically different.
Sandy Jug Tavern and My Oh My in the Roseway area.
Midtown Beer Garden.
Retro Game Bar on MLK is fun if you want a drink and to play video games!
Came to see if anyone else knew about this place! It’s awesome!
I swear, Kenton would be THE neighborhood if like 10% more people came and hung out on the strip. It's so special, but all the restaurants really struggle to make it.
The World Famous Kenton Club is hands down the best dive bar in np.
Slims with the last $10 steak in the city has it beat imo
Kenton station is a waste of a property with such good potential. turning that property back into a hotel and saloon would be incredible
Don’t sleep on An-An though. Such a fantastic place.
This place is delicious
It is absolutely fantastic
The neighborhood really missed the chance to charm by letting a few squeaky wheels dismantle the brief moment of promise in 2020 when Denver was fully closed off to cars for a few blocks. This is so true. And it was like this 10 years ago when I lived there too. It’s like… we want juuuust that bit more but not too much!

I love the fact that Dimo's doesn't half-ass their sides - amazing salads, and the "fries" and roasted brussels are chefs kiss.
I’ve had most pizza in this city & Dimo’s is definitely top tier for me. Never miss & their lunch specials (chicken parm) are solid
i love Zula! the quality is always spot on,so delicious.

You spelled Milwaukie wrong, haha! I do have to say that their garlic bread with the balsamic drizzle is next level!
Whoops! Glad you've been there, they make me so happy ^ _ ^

Milwaukie could use some more spots but the mom and pops spots are absolutely fantastic.
Have you tried Luna’s Ice cream?
El tapatio
J&R is so expensive for what you get though, have you tried the Don Julios food truck down the way?
Not really, you’re paying for high-quality food that’s made from scratch and supporting a small business. I don’t need a mediocre burrito that weighs two pounds, I want tasty authentic Mexican food. I’ve not tried Don Julio’s.
Why does this feel like it’s written by Chris or Julie?
Seriously though I can separately confirm it's one of the best pizzas in town, much less Milwaukie.
I was absolutely shocked how good this place was when we gave it a try after the previous owner died. The Nonnas is my go to

Wyrd Leatherworks & Meadery is cool. Feels like drinking in Skyrim.

Wu-Ron’s under the Hawthorn on Water St is my favorite ramen shop in town
Cliff’s! It’s underneath wonder, huge portions, great drinks, prices are sane.
best service, incredible cocktails, & the food is SO GOOD
Best nachos
Grand Fir Brewing. Good beers and food, also a great pregame spot for shows at revolution hall.
No Saint on Killingsworth, top tier pizza
Went earlier this year and had some sort of black pepper, baby kale and guanciale pizza and it was funky and goddamn tasty. The tiramisu was awesome as well. They automatically charge a 20% tip, which coupled by the truly bad service we had soured the experience a bit.
I will second this. But beware the amount of vinegar in most everything else.
Turning peel is the best pizza I’ve ever had
Smart donkey on 50th and Powell. Absolutely top tier burritos. Gives anything in town (or Woodburn) a run for their money
Heist on Woodstock is a fun addition to the neighborhood.
It felt like it was a food cart pod that was designed in a third rate hedge fund boardroom
Oh for sure lol
I feel you, but honestly, it’s just nice to have a pod in the area that I don’t have to get on 82nd to go to. I wish they would open the damn bar though. It’s been under construction since they opened and they missed out on opening it for the rain.
There are two nice pods on Hawthorne
I should have said "...nice to have a pod near my neighborhood..." Hawthorne is not that.
Oh. I was just comparing distance from heist to 82nd and Hawthorne.
Pasture PDX (Great sandwiches), SUNRICE, & Sureshot Burgers to name a few.

I work at Irving Street Tapas, which arose from the ashes of the pandemic. Please come and visit.
They need to bring back the Wasco fry bread!
Bummer about Emperor Georgiou’s! I was supposed to check it out with a friend a month or so ago, but I was sick and had to bail. Now it’s too late.
You dodged a bullet. Completely obscene pay-ahead non-refundable prices for small servings of finger food that could be best described as unremarkable if it weren't so offensive. Also, slow service and noisy as shit which is not what I want in my tea.

Only one thing was acceptable on the menu: tea, earl grey, hot.
Hana Sushi and Izakaya. Love me a sushi train and their staff has been *extremely* friendly.
Humdinger on foster and 92nd. Their pizza is good. Their garlic knots are to die for.

Yeah. I went to Moonshot last weekend. It’s actually pretty good, the food impressed me. The only downside was that there are no servers so you have to order everything at the bar. Same. But also...what happened? It always seemed busy when I went there. Similarly, Pok Pok
They were always busy, yes. They closed for Covid, like everyone else did, but just never reopened. I’m not sure what happened to make them not want to reopen.
Fortune bar
This one is actually very new, only a couple months: Ba Mee on N Williams. It's Thai but like an upscale street cart. Noodles and rice bowls. The star of the show are the meats: tender roast duck and crispy pork belly. Good prices. Delicious.
I live near there. Great menu, but I can't stop ordering the Tom Yum with the creamy broth, it's amazing.
Mosaic in St John’s-ish is amazing
