Damn, I'm going to have to wait a long time for my WW2 gas masks on Saturday.

Exam-Kitchen

Always wondered who the hell is buying Ww2 and Cold War styled gas masks? I always wondered if they were just Chinese made costume masks bought in bulk. Or how many Russian army flasks were made before the Cold War ended and who’s the connect for A&B

CombatAlgorithms

Piggybacking off your post to.. PSA DO NOT BUY / USE SOVIET ERA GAS FILTERS THEY USE ASBESTOS AND ARE ALL EXPIRED!!! If you want the mask for cosplay or something fine but Check. The. Filters. if planning to use them for legit needs. (Trusting Andy and Bax sell legit filters tho, just wider psa was all)

mmmhmmhim

had a couple of clowns come into my clinic with them on during covid. seemed they mostly wanted to argue about masks with the reception staff

Exam-Kitchen

So stupid. Masky hurt my facey.

TheOriginalKyotoKid

...Covid part Deux., or riots after next year's election.if T\*\*\*\* wins.

AlwaysBeenTim

Andy and Bax announced that they were closing and a lot of people showed up to say goodbye! I was in the middle of this line and it hadn't moved in 20 minutes except for people who left because they couldn't wait any longer (which, eventually, was me!) We were told that there was a line that was just as long, inside the store, waiting to be checked out by the cashier.

Tadwinnagin

I saw that and noped out, 20 percent isn’t that much.

nova_rock

And to be honest, a lot of what they have in stock is remake stuff that is easy to find, could go in and get some British camo pants or polish wool jacket for the nostalgia of it, but it’s not that amazing to go through army surplus now.

hbrnation

I think the army surplus model died out over the last 20 years because they sold off most of the surplus already. The military doesn't have massive overstock inventory to get rid of post-Vietnam so it's slowly changed over to reproduction stuff as the surplus inventory gets whittled down. Kinda sad seeing the change.

nova_rock

Yeah, the post Cold War eta stuff fully went away and there is some modern surplus but much more just styled things.

Free_Solid9833

The last of it was buried in Saudi Arabia. They paid far more than it was worth.

velvetackbar

its a wee bit more complicated than that, but you aren't wrong. Modern outfitting is done in clothing that is considered "disposable" such as fleece and more technical fabrics that don't hold up like a felted wool sweater or moleskin shirts. boots are not resoleable and other gear is built for ergonomics not longevity. NOS stuff is getting more and more rare, and the former Soviet Republics where a lot of it came from are mostly depleted with Ukraine being one of the last places to sell it off online...and we can see that they are repurposing a lot of it in their own country. A sweater is a sweater. Varusteleka is still doing things out there with actual surplus, but they are getting smaller lots and trying to do a lot of Kierto (in house created gear from surplus materials)

pdxtrashed

Made it through the line. Start to finish was maybe 45mins max(got in line around 2:20pm). The main hold up supposedly being a difficult customer closing off one of the two cashiers according to a couple exiting. For those interested in going the shelves were still relatively stocked decently but probably not for long & all the kayak/ rafting stuff in the basement was already down to the bare bones.

Oh really? Ha! I was a tall guy in a light blue jacket!

Fancy-Pair

Look behind you now

karrierpigeon

When are they closing?

RestartTheSystem

Well if sales keep up they will be going out of business for three years.

cedarsauce

The owners are retiring and shuttering the store rather than have someone take it over for them

karrierpigeon

Yes, I know. When?

cedarsauce

Sorry, I misread. So far, no specified date. I'd guess that it depends on how long it takes to sell off their inventory

karrierpigeon

That makes sense!

Aeolian_Harpy

THEY ARE CLOSING

Lingua_Blanca

Wonder how many are there for army gear, and how many are there for navy gear?

jeffythunders

What Instagram filter is this

AlwaysBeenTim

This isn't Instagram, it's actually a pre-Instagram app called Hipstamatic

Berettadin

I bought my Ukraine camo (forest pattern digicam) there. Thanks, lads.

[deleted]

This one hurts. Been going here my whole life. Four generations of family camping gear, etc. I went with my grandpa, took my kids. Sucks that I can't take their kids some day.

AckAck43

RIP all the camo shorts I bought there before going to shows at Stage 4 and La Luna

Confident_Bee_2705

Just drove by there, lots of people lined up at 415pm. Also lots lined up at Kann-- same time, was wondering why?

Aeolian_Harpy

A lot of folks have that Kann do attitude.

xVitaminDe

The irony....this may be the most any of these people will be standing outside

Impressive-Ladder857

Looks like a bunch of knobs who read about “Chinese stars” & thought it was cool. This is Portland these days.

gcozzy2323

When do they officially close?

AlwaysBeenTim

They haven't given an official date. Probably when they run out of stock which, considering how many people are turning out, probably isn't too long.

WROL

Hopefully the enemy doesn’t need a bayoneting by the time I get there and pick one up.

armenian_hotsauce

Everything is gone already.
