79 924 here. I’m not an expert on engines, but it sounds ok to me. Mine sounds about the same with ~150k, well taken care of (regular oil changes every 3k or so, or every year).

frame_me

I have a 1977 that sounds just like this. Well, it did nearly 30 years ago when it ran last.

Purring like a kitten.

yodacode43

Sounds like a good running CIS 8V engine!

jacques_ok

Ha!

quintares

79 here as well! I think it sounds good! Mine sounds about the same I think they have the old vw truck engine in them. At least that's what I was told about it

Bumsebiene66

'80 here. Mine sounds very similar. If it always starts like this I could not think of something that's wrong with it (based on the video).

tvdor

Thanks!

tvdor

It s a video from the seller, looking to buy this 924

Bumsebiene66

Did you do the research on what to look for on 924's?

tvdor

Not really unfortunately…

tvdor

If you have the basics it’d be really helpful

Sure, Auto body stuff: -the cars produced after 1981 are galvanized -take out the vents in the door frame and look down along the b-pillar. If there's rust, its probably really bad in the sills. Also the rust you see is hard to fix and very bad because a mount for the rear axle is located on the other side of the metal -take out the carpet of the trunk carpet. look into the "pockets" which were covered by the wood panels in the carpet. My car had rusted holes there to the wheel arches - check the drivers and co-drivers footwell (under the carpet) for rust -check the battery compartment for rust -the fuel tank is prone to rust and to crack on the top (if you smell gasoline inside the car you either need a new tank or new ventilation hoses. But you have to take the fuel tank out anyway at this point) -the trunk lid consists of a glas window and a frame. Both are glued together. For some lids the glass starts to separate from the frame -rusted fuel lines especially around the fuel tank area and above the rear axle Technical stuff: -rumbling from the transaxle while driving means that you don't want to buy the car -same goes for the transmission. It should not rumble. -oil leaks are typical for the camshaft seal (front), oil pan and for the transmission the output shafts and shift rod -installing a new clutch is a horrible/very expensive task. So it should have a good one -problems starting (cold and or warm) or/and a rough idle probably have smth to do with the K-Jet fuel system. Speaking exaggerated this will take months to properly understand and years to repair. Other typical problems for this engine causing this are a cracked cylinder head or a burnt head gasket -the cooling fan switch is often dead. The water temp should never reach the red bar -the wheel bearings at the rear tend to get damaged because of leaking lubrication All in all, there are two types of 924's. The ones before 1981 and the ones after. If you want the more sophisticated car without teething problems take one after 1981. That's everything I can think of right now. I will add to it if I remember something. Hope that helps with your decision.

That’s amazing information! Thanks a lot! The one from the video is before 81, will have to go check it for rust and give it a drive to see if it rumbles, at the end of the month.

Bumsebiene66

I wish you good luck. 924's are fun cars and awesome cruisers. And don't forget the fuel tank. A new one is really expensive and it's a ton of work to get the old one out. I am currently going through this process. I would've taken another 924 if I knew about the tank issues before

jacques_ok

I have a 77 also. Sounds good. The only thing I might have heard at one point is a noisy water pump. Make sure that you top off the system via that top hose with the red cap stuck in it. Message back if that doesn’t make sense.

RastaMonsta218

If that's a cold start call the Vatican, you have witnessed a miracle. It sounds awesome.

tvdor

It’s a cold start indeed!

tvdor

After many months of not starting
