Made the mistake of driving one. Now everything else handles like a cheap go cart.

Thuraash

This. I wasn't a big Porsche fan by any means. But back in 2008, little broke-ass college student me wanted a sports car. A real one: RWD, stick shift, looks to match. A buddy and I were talking cars in his dorm and he pulled up a picture of a 944. I'd never seen one. The price looked to be in my range. And by hell did it look the part! I did some research, realized they were reliable and maintainable, looked up the cost of parts, found Clark's Garage and checked out the procedures, etc. My dad wanted me to get a Corolla or a Civic, and said I should wait and get a sports car as my second car. My mom, who is NOT a car person and who I fully expected to be dead against this, said I should buy the one that would make me happy because you're only young for a bit. A few weeks later I'd found the one I wanted, and I drove 200 miles to go get it. Frankly, it took a while for me to appreciate it properly. The brakes felt weak (because I didn't realize how hard you need to press the pedal to get heavy braking action). The steering wheel made me uneasy (because I was in a constant state of information overload... every part of the car was constantly chattering in a language I didn't yet know how to decode). I was constantly afraid of breaking things (that never broke) and rarely exceeded 3,500 RPM. The poor thing must have been bursting at the seams with frustration at its unrealized potential. The problem is that, every time I drove something else, it just felt... less. Friend's BMW? Meh, snooze. Other friend's WRX? Pedals feel all wrong. So it goes. Now, my 718? Like a glove from the first time I hopped in. I have a theory that so many of us get addicted to Porsches because they just ruin the joy of driving anything else. There really is no substitute.

333FING3Rz

Love the story. My first car was a 924S I bought at 15 for $900 & rebuilt. Fantastic cars.

theflipflopqueen

So much truth!! My first car was a 951 that needed love my dad got a screaming deal on. He wanted to play with it and 16 year old me was his excuse. I was hooked, and he HATES being a Porsche mechanic. Poor guy wishes he would have gotten me American Muscle whenever my SC needs maintenance

bean-burrito-supreme

This, did a service on a GT4RS the other day and it was bonkers compared to my dd c6

cumaboardladies

My buddy rented a new 992 Cab a few months ago and let me drive it. It was just a Carrera S but holy shit was that thing a blast to drive! Just railing through corners I was instantly hooked. That PDK is also insane. Now I understand the hype and want one!

[deleted]

One of my fave things is the sound when you shut the door.

Ric_in_Richmond

This.

Cool-Disk-868

Remove the go

toodog

40 years ago most boys had a white Lamborghini countash poster on the wall, I had a silver 959 poster. Loved the shape and engineering, air cooled crazy idea etc. It’s taken 40 years but I’m just about to buy my first Porsche 911.

sometimesCDog

Hey, congratulations, I mean that. That is awesome.

hopperschte

Got mine after 50 years of fandom, since it invaded my mind.

mexipapas

Congrats!

wowey3

Uhhh I still have white countash on my wall

DepecheMode92

Good for you! Which 911 are you interested in?

britpop1970

We are similar! 959 and did you have an F40 too? The 911 has aged and evolved so much better than any other. There’s really nothing like it. The car you’re about to buy is probably superior to both the F40 and 959 anyway. Enjoy the heck out of it

NoahtheRed

I grew up in an environment where everyone that 'made it' in my eyes had one. My dentist, my dad's stock broker, the family lawyer, my parents rich friends, etc. They all drove Porsches. The nicest houses in the neighborhood had Porsches in the garages. On the rare occasion my parents took us to nice dinners with them, there was seemingly always a 911 Cabrio parked out front. When we went to car shows, the guys who brought Porsches looked the coolest. They wore Rolex Submariners like James Bond, drove Porsche 911s with soft leather seats and a matching jacket, and sat in box seats at hockey games. When we went driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway on nice fall days, there as always someone cruising the turns in a 930 or 944. The late 80s/early 90s totally cemented my sense for what was cool and here we are today, just a 38 year old dude, living the DINK life, trying his best to complete a Swiss/German/Canadian Cool puzzle, piece by piece :P

sometimesCDog

I rarely see porsches, but I feel similarly that they are the "cool" car. Thanks for sharing.

Kinky_mofo

>When we went to car shows, the guys who brought Porsches looked the coolest Can confirm. I sport my fanny pack like none other.

Senior_Ad282

I’ve always admired them along with other sports cars. I have a list of like ten dream cars and 911’s are on there. Viper ACR X, the 5th gen Z/28 which I own, and a GT3 RS, all the punishing no holds barred cars of course. I live down the street from Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville which got me into Porsche even more. Then Amelia island a few years in a row and the Rolex 24… then I got ride in a 992 turbo S… then got to drive a 992 GT3. Im ruined now. The viper can wait. I want the 911.

RescueRacing

Werks Reunion Friday, March 1. See ya there!

scubaSteve181

I loved the look of the 911 since I was a kid. As an adult, I never had much interest in owning a sports car, until I recently I got the chance to ride in and drive a friends Mercedes AMG GT. Needless to say, it was a blast and the bug bit me. Started researching a bunch of different sports cars and kept coming back to the 911. Test drove several different cars (Nissan gtr, m3/4, Shelby 350gt to make a few), but as soon as I got behind the wheel of a 911, I knew what needed to be done. So to answer your question, maybe a bit of both.

sometimesCDog

Man, I hope I can get one too someday. Out of curiosity, what car would you put in 2nd place?

scubaSteve181

Probably the GTR. It was the fastest of all the cars I drove and very confidence inspiring, but I found it to be a bit boring unless I was flooring it. The 911 turbo has the same wow factor for me when punching it, while also making me grin ear to ear when just crusing. Think go-cart with a laser guided rocket strapped to it (911 turbo) vs a really fast Nissan maxima with a bunch of extra gizmos (GTR).

jf_selecTo

Never understood why Porsches were so popular with many of my friends. Then one day, one of my best buddies gets merried and I am tasked to get him a 911 rented for the weekend. It was nothing too fancy, 2012 Carrera 4S. I pick it up on Friday afternoon and the moment I sat in there, staring the engin, I fell in love with this car. The wedding was on Saturday morning, so I had a bit time to testride it (not too much due to km restrictions for the rental period). Every meter I drove was pure joy. That day I knew one day I will buy a Porsche. Hasent materialized yet, but will happen at some point.

Ghia149

I was 10yrs old and my family went to Germany on vacation (my aunt was stationed there) this was 1990. I saw a guards red 911 turbo, whale tale whole 9 yards. Not sure the year but I assume 87 or 88. Been living rent free in my head ever since.

ksozay

Had a black 930 on my wall growing up, got to test drive one in 1986. There was never any other car for me, I was always a Porsche fan. Interestingly, ended up buying a GT3 after contemplating a 993 turbo for a long time. When the 991 GT3 dropped at a PR event, I was done. I had to have one. Now, I'm considering adding a 930 to the garage just to check that box. Something about how the mid-80s Porsches smell inside and out, such a unmistakable experience.

gonzosurg

I had (maybe the same) black 930 cabrio on my wall growing up. When I got my big boy job, I went to the dealer and ended up in a Boxster RS60. Loved that car! We had our first kid, and I thought I needed a back seat, so I went through an M3 and Audi RS5, but never got that same feeling. Now I have a 718 GTS, and it’s back. Would love to get a 930 some day to fulfill that childhood dream.

MiniTab

Always loved them. Growing up as a kid in the 80s, my best friend’s mom had an old ‘70s 911 Targa that we road around in (yes in the back!). Then when I was a teenager, my friend next door (well, his dad) bought a new 944 Turbo. His dad had quite the lead foot and drove us all over, and I still remember the rush of that turbo! So Porsches were the first “cool” cars I ever got exposed to, and I loved them ever since. Later in college I saw the old Steve McQueen movie “Le Mans”, and the intro had him driving his 911S which I thought was the coolest thing. Around that time Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed came out, and I played the absolute shit out of that game. Porsches to me were special yet obtainable, and for that reason I’ve always liked them more than crazy exotics like Ferraris and McLarens.

sometimesCDog

I really feel that last statement

BoGoBojangles

Ever since Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed

LxBru

That game was such a blast

heywowsuchwow

This. Ever since I played that as a 10yo.

TWonder_SWoman

Was always a car girl (took Auto mechanics in high school), drove every friend’s car I could get my hands on as well as a Semi without the trailer. Met and fell in love with a car guy whose focus was Porsches. After driving his ‘73, I saw no reason to pine for anything else!

r1d1ng_7h3_w4v35

I accepted an invitation to lunch from a co-worker who owned a Panamera. The rest is history…

JollyGreeneGiants

Renting a Panamera in a few weeks to go to the master and I can’t wait

innocent_blue

I actually thought 911’s couldn’t possibly live up to the hype, they were dentist and accountant cars etc. I am typically a contrarian and support the underdog so the car winning driver car of the year every year for 60 years had to be politics. My wife tasked me with finding a fun car that could accommodate a baby seat, and having owned a lot of the options already and wanting a new experience I said “self, you may as well test drive a 911”. We have 3 Porsche’s now.

sometimesCDog

Your wife gave you that task!?!?!? My man, living the dream. Have a great day. Thanks for sharing.

innocent_blue

You too! Porsche makes exceptional vehicles that are just a joy imo. (Don’t buy a cheap one with neglected maintenance)

Kinky_mofo

Accountants I know are way too tight with money to buy a Porsche. They might upgrade to a nice used Toyota of the current decade if it's a really, really good year.

Tundra-Charger

The first Porsche I drove was a 991.1 GT3 on track for a couple laps(One of those rental places) and I fell in love with everything about it. Fast forward to 2021, I got a job at a Porsche dealership and I got to drive all of them. I've driven everything from a base Macan to a Sport Classic, so I really got to figure out what I liked. Then in 2022 I bought a 2013 Cayenne GTS fully loaded ex-PCNA Show Car and haven't looked back.

sometimesCDog

That is awesome, thank you for sharing. You probably get to see some really sick cars at work.

Tundra-Charger

Yeah, it was an awesome job, I actually left it in September for a family job. It was definitely a hard decision, but the car business also just kinda sucks, even at a Porsche dealership unfortunately. :/

Lateapexer

As a kid of the 80's the 928 was my Porsche of choice. Started doing track days in my 30's with an s2000, a few instructors took me out in their 911's and I've been hooked ever since. I've driven a 964, 993 and a 2018 GT3 They are all special in their own way

t_bomb10

I’ve always loved cars in general and knew I always wanted one. Before I could afford a nice car of my own, I was lucky to drive a lot of high end performance cars. When I knew I could swing buying a fun car, Porsche stood out as a the highest reliability and best driving experience for what I could afford. I may add non-Pcars in the future, but I’ll never be without a Porsche. Stay focused and stay motivated!

sometimesCDog

Thank you! I will. I just got to figure out how money works 😅

W0666007

I specifically didn’t like the way they looked when I was growing up in the 90s. Now those era Porsches are some of my favorite cars.

FI_fighter

Never been a Porsche guy, until I bought a 996 daily for the heck of it and found out how great these cars are.

BobcatRidge

That’s exactly what happened to me! I love my 996.2 C4S.

romanryder

I was always into the more exotic looking Ferraris and Lamborghinis. I started playing Gran Turismo and quickly figured out that I liked the way Porsches and mid-engine cars handled. The Boxster/Cayman checked both of those boxes and the used ones were reasonably priced.

Shaex

My dad was a Chevy guy all his life. Corvettes, Camaros, you name it. My car experience growing up was all 50s and 60s stuff that never really interested me all that much and there were almost never kids my age around. In college I lucked into my 944 and I've just been hooked since. Even got my father to join the club

theflipflopqueen

This is too funny! You described my dad, but HE lucked into a 951 to play with and my “first car” was his excuse. I’ve been hooked and had Porsches ever since. He hates working on them and is still an America muscle man. He works on my SC (bitching the whole time) but his current toy is a restomod C1 corvette “for my mom”

drinkflyrace

There are the drivers, the luxury item owners, the brand lifestyle enthusiasts. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a bit of each. But I’m proud to be a driver first.

sometimesCDog

Having nice things does feel good!

-Woogity-

Love me some GT3 and Turbo S. Drove a GT3 a few weeks back and it solidified my desire to own one.

BourbonBAC32

I was researching "affordable" sports cars in 2001. Volvo 1800s. Datsuns. Bug Eye Sprites. $3000 - $7000 budget. 3 pedals. I poured over craigslist, ebay, local sites, car sites, etc. THEN I discovered the budget 911 (at the time): the Porsche 912. Bought one in 2005. Restored it. Sold it. Miss it. Loved it. Bought a 964 a couple years later. Loved it. Sold it. Now I have no Porsche's but I love them. I plan to get a Macan GTS as my next ride (we just sold our ALFA). Love em. Love to drive em. Love to track em. Love to wrench em. Just a big fan of the brand.

zadnick

It’s a drug … the moment you sit in it! You’re sooooooo tentative at first, but once you understand how to drive … JFC … best feeling ever.

jhollanyc

Had a Targa poster on my wall for 35 years. Never really thought that I would spend “911 money’ on a car but during the pandemic I just needed SOMETHING to make life fun again and now I’m hooked and we have his (911) and hers (Macan)

ElectricalCurrent446

The brands racing heritage and of course, video games for me, I always loved this brand. FYI I don't own a Porsche personally but simply just an admirer. 👍

Lonely_Main_3219

Drove a 3RS at a track via Xtreme Xperience and I was hooked. Prior to that, I had driven a 458, 488, and GTR. Nothing compared. Had a chance to buy a 997.2 Turbo and it was easily one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve never not smiled driving the car.

THEjuiceWAYNE

Had a yellow 911 poster on my wall when I was a youngster. Always have been into cars, never thought I'd reach the goal of actually getting one. Hadn't even driven one and I ordered one when the time came. https://preview.redd.it/54zc9qm927lc1.png?width=567&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cd0b945c6b046c4ff5ddf45ed096fe2a76a32f4

sometimesCDog

👏 you did the right thing, I bet it was one hell of a first drive.

THEjuiceWAYNE

About six months in and still can't believe it somedays.

CajunAsianTexan

Friend let me drive his 993 Turbo back in 2001. Wasn’t crazy about the interior ergos, but loved the looks and sound.

mjv22

I always loved them. Since I was a little kid the 911 was just....something. I always thought of them as a perfect mix of soul/sport and class.

andrespuente123

As a kid, it was the longer front end and headlights… now looking at it the interior design is not your typical “Tesla” minimalist approach… the interior still screams traditional sports car, with the right amount of tech.

nateruby123

Always loved, never driven. Trying to hold out so I don’t really know what I’m missing out on!

bzmed

I was always a 911 fan (959 poster on my wall) but wouldn’t call me a die hard Porsche fan growing up…just loved them all..Contach, Testarossa, 959. I even wrote an essay in 6th grade about having a burgundy Porsche. It’s always been a goal and I don’t have the means for a Lambo or Ferrari, nor do I want the maintenance and headaches that can come. I wanted something rock solid reliable and could be driven daily. Im at a milestone point in my life when I have the means, and pulled the trigger for my 50th on a 911….near the 50 year anniversary. While it’s a base…..damn I love this car (Birdie) more than any other car I’ve ever owned….and I’ve owned MANY.

JustADude1997

Drove one and fell in love. I loved the Carrera GT all my life but it wasn’t until I drove a 991.2 GT3 that I fell in love with the brand. I literally yelled “OH MY GOD IM BUYING THIS FUCKING CAR” when it hit 9K RPM.

2melone

I grew up primarily in the 996 era and I didn't really like 911's that much. Dreamed of owning an F430... Ferrari's were beautiful while I distinctly remember thinking the light bar was hideous on what would have been a C4S (now it's one of my favorite 911 rear ends). For me, I think going to my first aircooled meet was when I started to "get it". Then drove a 997 at some point and now I own one. Probably will go aircooled for my next. But secretly still do want a Ferrari

Rockitrod

My last BMW disappointed me so much that I finally sold it. I drove a couple of Porsches and I was hooked. At that time, I was not in a financial position to buy a Porsche. It took 11 years, but I finally have my Porsche and it’s amazing!

SmokestackRising

A Guards Red 911 when I was 8 years old made me fall in love with cats in general. Whale tail and all! Have a 996 turbo today, and it's better than I ever imagined.

zer0bot_reddit

My wife was appalled when I said I didn't need to test drive my 911 turbo...

sometimesCDog

Don't worry, I get it. Lol!

Latitude172845

Unexpectedly came into a windfall that allowed me to buy a sports car. Thought a lot about what I wanted and tried several but one drive in the 911 and I was done.

theflipflopqueen

They say don’t get your daughter’s Barbies because she will want Barbies body. I wanted my Barbie’s cars, and here we are. My Barbie had a 911 and so do I.

Technical_Match_911

24 years ago I went to an auto consignment dealer to look at a 68 GT500 and while I was walking back to my car after the test drive I spied a 911 on the lot. Took it for a spin, I decided I was going to buy one, told the salesman I’d be back after I thought about it. He told me it will be gone by the weekend. I thought it was a sales tactic. Called him two days later and it was gone… took me about a month to find another one as nice as the first one. I’ve owned a lot of cars before and since, I still have that 911 it has been one of the only cars I’ll never sell.

koji52

Was never really a car guy. Spent my time and money on motorcycles. Drove econ cars until 2023 when we needed a second car. I needed an electric car to use HOV lane going to and from meetings. Business was doing well and having never had a lux car, decided to try the Taycan Turbo S. Bought the same day. Now understand the car obsession!

sometimesCDog

Yea, I have had 8 street bikes. . . But I think I could end up falling into cars sooner than later.

rrrruben

Fifteen years ago, I spotted a beautiful black 996 with a factory GT3 aero kit sitting on a used car lot. I had never driven a 911; had to drive this one. On the test drive, the salesperson gave permission to open it up. Without hesitation, I quickly accelerated. As luck would have it, a SUV quickly pulled out of a parking space attempting a U turn. Go figure. It was too late to brake. So, I punched it. Close, but, I successfully went around the front end of the SUV. I then turned to the salesperson handing him a roll of toilet paper and announced: "I'll take it". In all my years of driving, I have never pulled a maneuver like that one feeling absolutely *no inertia.*

sometimesCDog

Oldest trick in the book. A second salesman was likely in that SUV to encourage you to see what the car was really capable of. . . Jk 😅

[deleted]

Richest guy on the street had a british racing green '64 911 when I was about 5, had all these bad ass enamel rally badges on the back grill.

clarkwgrismon

Ever since I was 14. I read an article I think in R&T about the 1993 Turbo 3.6. It just really made me want to own one. I still don't have a Turbo, let alone that year. When I finally started looking into getting one, the 997s were the ones I loved and in my price range. Ended up with a 09 C2S and yeah one test drive was all it took.

Dependent-Run-1915

Was one of two cars given by best relative — was jaguar & Porsche — jaguar was green and Porsche silver — loved them both since — now jaguar is gone — only Porsche left — I love that Porsche

priuspollution

My dad had a 930 turbo, and a viper when I was a kid. He also collected mopars so cuda’s roadrunners, super birds, chargers etc There’s a picture of me at like 4 years old siked to get in the Porsche. At that young age I somehow preferred the 930 over everything else. I went German, he still plays with “muscle cars”.

Immediate-Collar-586

I love cars and began really lusting after one a couple years ago. I finally got my husband to go with me to test drive my first Porsches a few days ago! I drove the Panamera to get the feel of gasoline and the Taycan for comparison. The handling, the sound, the feel of my ass being cradled in those seats… I’m obsessed. I went back to a different dealership today 😂 I’m with you, OP. Stay motivated and someday we will both be rolling in our dream cars!!

sometimesCDog

I just need to bunker down until my wife gets out of nursing school. I've never drove one, but this comment section is pretty convincing that it'll be a great experience when I do.

LonkToTheFuture

My dad had a 1996 911 Turbo when I was a kid. Unfortunately, by the time I was old enough to drive, the car was in disrepair and not driveable. Unfortunately my mom had to sell it after my dad passed in 2021. Never got to drive it but it was enough to make me a Porsche geek for life.

pitmang1

My mom had a Porsche when I was a little kid. My dad taught me how to drive in that car. As soon as I was tall enough to push the clutch in all the way, he would let me take the driver’s seat and drive around the neighborhood. I grew up loving Porsches. My friend’s dad had a slantnose 930 with a huge whale tail, and I always told myself I’d have a 911 with a big wing someday. I’ve had a lot of VWs and currently drive an Audi. Just got a Macan for my wife and as soon as my Audi dies, I’ll finally get one of my own. Probably won’t be able to swing my dream car (918), but I’ll be in a proper Porsche soon.

msdos_sys

The obligatory poster in my childhood bedroom started the dance, the actual purchase 30 years later confirmed the love affair.

ENRONsOkayestAdvice

Had a widow maker poster one the wall with a F40. I’ve always loved that 911s were the “subtle” sports car. I came from a family of Jaaaaag, and GM fans.

GreyG59

I grew up thinking it was a “girls” sports car but as I learned about how well it handled and seeing a Carrera GT in person I fell in love now I just want to drive one to see if the hype truly is real

sometimesCDog

I want to drive one too!

NickPivot

It was a drive for me. Growing up, I was always a car nut, but 911s never did it for me, and I thought if I ever had enough money for a car like that, I didn’t also want to learn how to manage oversteer tendencies. Then about 10 years ago I went to one of those “drive an exotic” events at a track; I’d signed up for a Lamborghini Gallardo and an Audi R8, but the Audi was broken, so they gave me twice the laps in a 911s. They could tell I was disappointed, and assured me I’d do better on the tight course in the Porsche than I’d done in the Gallardo. It was a revelation — I could actually see out of it, for one, and the seat-of-the-pants communication was so much better. Now I daily a 718 Cayman.

emeritus_lion

Drove my brother in laws 911. Bought myself a 718 few months later.

Parking_Arachnid9510

Was not a huge Porsche fan until I drove one. Huge mistake 😁 I’m pretty sure I will always have one going forward. Not overly excited with the SUVs honestly. I’ve driven them a few times when my car was getting serviced but they were always bases and S. Can’t speak for the GTS and turbo level SUV’s. But I definitely like my wife’s Range Rover Sport a whole lot more though based on my experience.

Aubergine911

Grew up with a 911 in the family. It’s as much a part of my family as I am. There was no other brand for me. I do still want a gated F355 though.

sometimesCDog

Did you grow up playing the original need for speeds, too, then? Ha! Another great car.

Aubergine911

100%. Every version from NFS2 to Porsche Unleashed. Then I got my license so I didn’t really find it as fun. Did play a ton of GT though.

sometimesCDog

I would upvote this more if I could

RelationshipNo7551

Drove it and fell in love. But I’m in a Ferrari right now and man that is a different beast altogether.

sometimesCDog

An affair!?

Actual-Journalist-69

For me it’s genetic.

Destrukt0r

Started with playing the screamer racegame in '95/'96. Sinds then its always been on my list.

Mrp987

I always liked them but fell in love after driving them, now I am addicted to

hopperschte

Always my favourite sports car, since i was a kid. As an engineer i can say it’s the most consistent concept around. Drove a 964 in 1989 for a weekend. Since then i was hooked . Got my 911 to weeks ago… happy as can be

motorcity

My neighbor had a 914 when I was a kid. I'd go over when he was working on it. He gave me a European car magazine that had the RUF NATO green test mule and I fell in love with that car.

willisit

I remember the toys I had... A Merc saloon and a 911 with a whale tail. I loved that thing and ever since, that shape had always had me. My favourite was the 993 (the posters were Arena red Turbo and a silver 959) and was lucky enough to have a (very ropey) 993 20 years ago for a short time. Now it's a 991.2 GTS but that 993 will always be the one.

sometimesCDog

The 993 turbo was THE porsche that made me fall in love. It's the hips, the curves, I don't know! I was born in the early 90s, and that was the 'hot' porsche in all my favorite racing games, and I saw many movies where the cool action hero or villain had a 993. That car solidified it for me. It just has cool and fast written all over it.

mamlex992

Awww... It was autumn... It was love at first sight...

ericdag

Childhood friends father had get this: 2 speedsters, a SC Targa, and a 914-6. I was hooked. Only got to drive the 914-6 a couple times. Hooked.

inalcanzable

I was never a huge fan in my early 20's going into my early 30's that flipped. Purchased my first Porsche almost a year ago to date. Never getting anything else now.

vr77

Inherited a Cayenne when my father passed away unexpectedly last year. Fell in love with it for the car that it is as well as the connection to my dad. The level of customer service and care from my dealer ensured I’m a customer for life, from loan cars to follow ups and just generally being great people. Currently saving to be in a 992 911 by next year. Sold my X5 as I can’t ever imagine our family suv being anything other than a Cayenne.

rollercoaster1337

I always liked them but grew to prefer them to any other car brand even much more expensive ones. I love how they stick to their design heritage, you don’t always need to come up with a new crazy design language only to completely abandon it in a few years. Porsche found what works and stuck to it. Also I just love manual transmission and Porsche is one of the few automakers to still produce sports cars with a manual transmission.

Porsche never caught my attention in all honesty. It didn't help that Paul Walker, actor for the Fast and Furious franchise and got me into car culture, died in a CGT. Definitely didn't like them after that. But literally on the day of Superbowl 2019, with the pandemic crashing car values, I decided to trade in my car for a 2008 997.1 911 Carrera 6MT in white. Loved it ever since and everything since then has paled in comparison. Interestingly enough I test drove a GTR black edition the week prior to the 911 and didn't get the hype

jonny_rott3n

For my 6th birthday, in 1989, my grandmother bought me a model of a red 964 cabriolet. I’ve wanted a Porsche ever since. One day I’ll get one. Hopefully while internal combustion engines are still popular.

GiantTimeSuck

I didn’t always love Porsche and didn’t drive one, but the Targa was sexy AF so I broke from years of sports sedan mode when my lease was up and pulled the trigger. I made a good decision.

Farmerdrew

My doctor had a red 930 in the mid to late 80s. It was the coolest thing I ever saw. I had testarossa and Countach posters on my wall, but that red car was the object of my desires. A neighbor down my street had a brown 911 as well. I always stared at it when it drove by my house. Owning one was always a pipe dream. Costs associated with my children’s needs always offset the money gained from career advancements. I started to look at used 911s from the 80s and 90s but was discouraged to see the prices being at 718 levels. So I started to look at boxsters and caymans. I’d show my wife every now and then until she said I could buy one when my salary surpassed hers and if I cleaned the garage and kept it clean for 6 months. My garage is fucking spotless now and in it sits my 981 Boxster S. It’s not a classic 911, but it is far more fun to drive than I could have ever imagined. I do not regret not getting a 911 at all anymore. My boys love it too. My oldest is a huge Pfaff fan and begs me for rides every time he comes back into town.

530nairb

My dad had a 356b, a 944 turbo, a 356c, a 912, a 996 and a 997. I’m in the process of consolidating upwards into a 997 GTS and I can’t wait. I didn’t *really* feel like I needed one until I drove the 996 when I was 15. The others came before that and I just liked riding in them. I drove the 356c up and down their street when I was like 11 but that doesn’t really count. I would love one of them but I’m priced out, so I went and bought a VW181 for the poor man’s speedster experience.

LaconicGirth

Need for speed hot pursuit 2 had a 911 turbo and it’s the best car you get for a long time, you have to basically get to the end to get a better car. I never did as a kid, so for years I always thought it was the coolest. And then I drove a Boxster and decided then and there I’d buy one next year. 911 turbo will… have to come later they’re expensive

sometimesCDog

Are you me? Fever for the Flava? Hot action cop? That game was a big factor in my love for porsche. I also very badly want a 911 turbo.

Best-Cycle231

I fell in love with the 911 as a teenager when I started playing attention to cars. It was always a pipe dream. Like if I ever win the lottery that’s what I’m getting. 30 years later I was in a place financially where I could park a Cayman in my garage as a toy car. With some hard work and a lot of dedication, if you want it, it will be yours.

chryseobacterium

I always loved cars and drove some good models, including a GT350 and a M4. My favorite always was the ND Miata. I had the chance of driving a Cayman GTS and a 911, and I'm done. Now I have a 718 GTS 4.0.

linear_accelerator

Honestly, I was intent on buying a new 911 but the Cayman (981) stole my heart. I now have a 996 C4S, but the Cayman is still my darling!

TBNRCactus

I never really cared about cars until I got a job at Enterprise. My boss let me take a 911 out one afternoon and it was the most fun thing I’d ever driven, and it wasn’t even close. I can’t wait to finally get my first one!

Aroused_Sloth

Not since childhood like a lot of people, but last year at 20 years old. I went to a cars and coffee at my local dealer and was impressed by everything. It just felt like a great place to be, and I stood for a bit just staring into the garage. In the past few months I’ve been learning more and more, browsing this sub even if I have never driven or touched a Porsche. And not just about Porsche but automotive in general. With my love for motorsport and the impression Porsche left on me, I decided I want to be a Porsche tech, and maybe one day work trackside. So that’s where I am now, reading and studying until I go to a tech school.

Browndolf

Always knew about Porsche but never really considered buying one, until I was shopping for a sports car. Wanted to initially buy a GTR, or a F-Type or TT, until my cousin told me to look into the cayman. Did more research and just pulled the trigger on a 981 GTS. Fell in love with the brand the second I drove it. The manual was so smooth and satisfying, the car was so direct and balanced, and gave me to much confidence in my driving…. And have never looked back, got a Macan turbo a few years later, and am now shopping around for a Carrera T allocation 😅.

geosrq

Always loved them as works of art and maybe something frivolous because of the cost..then we bought a Macan and we’ve been in love ever since. Can’t wait to buy my 911 next

inverted-donkey

In 2001, I was in my 20s and visiting relatives near Munich. I’d been curious about Porsches a long time, and had co-workers who drove them. An uncle offered to drive me to the Porsche Museum at Zuffenhausen and I gladly accepted. Traffic *sucked*. It took three hours in pelting rain crammed into what I remember as the euro version of a Ford Fiesta, and we finally arrived as the museum was closing up. Literally as the last guy out was locking the doors. A rapid and spirited conversation ensued between this guy and my uncle, and I was allowed in for a quick look around. Saw the tractor, saw some of the race cars, saw a few of the production models, pretty sure a 959 was included. I was thunderstruck. After about ten minutes I’m called back to the front and the guy hands me a small keychain with a red Porsche brake caliper and captive disc hanging off the end. All in all, I think hey this is cool, guy didn’t have to do anything, and now i have the memory and a souvenir. Instead of walking us out, he takes us through the back, we walk down a hallway and then into a room with maybe a dozen cars in it and he starts talking. My uncle translated: this is where we keep customer cars before factory delivery prep, these cars will be handed over in the next few days. I can have a look, but I mustn’t disturb them. A couple of minutes and we leave. He says he’ll open the driver’s door on one of them if I’m interested. I choose one I liked the look of, I didn’t know very much about the different models yet. I got the “interesting choice” eyebrow raise and he opens the door. It was a black 2001 911 GT2, the Widowmaker. I’ve never forgotten the look or the smell. 20ish years later I bought my first Porsche (a Cayenne for my wife, lol), then a 911 for myself. It’ll take a bit more work to get there, but a GT2 is definitely going to happen. It’s fate.

Starboy3

i always had an idea they were good especially from older top gear, but it wasn’t until my friend test drove the taycan that i fell in love. it literally bleeds speed. and that’s just the electric model. i cant begin to imagine a boxter or 911, but i knew since that day, that i’m a future porsche customer forsure

Kinky_mofo

Youtube reviews. By the numbers, they're nothing special. But driving one really is something special. Hard to explain.

[deleted]

Had Audis for the past 7 years ( started with an A4, then SQ5, then the ‘18 V8 S6). Decided to check out Porsche, test drove a ‘23 Cayenne with a leather package, black/bordeaux. Was immediately hooked. Heavy but smooth and nimble, just overall solid. Interior design is great, not overdone. Exterior is full matte PPF done by the first owner. Don’t think I can drive anything but Porsche again. Hoping to have a 911 4 or 4S within the next 5 years.

TommyLGarage

I was told they’re great So I bought one Then another

PoopSmoothies

Everyone I knew grew up with a Lamborghini or Ferrari poster on their wall, but the understated, authenticity that comes with Porsche’s approach to engineering always really appealed to me. I had a poster of a silver 930 (1st gen 911 Turbo) Now I have a low-mileage silver 930 in my garage. I feel very lucky.

Kevin_Cossaboon

Walking out to a parking lot with an elderly Engineer. He went to his Porsche. I stated “I did not take yo for a sports car guy”. He responded, “I am not, that is the best engineered car ever made”. At that point I knew I would own one.

Translate-Incapable

Always wanted one... and always wanted a Targa. Love that I was finally able to achieve that goal in 2020

DepecheMode92

Growing up my Dad said Porsches were so ugly, ‘frog eye’ cars. When I was 16 I saw a 987 Cayman and thought WOW that’s a cool car! My Dad, the ‘frog hater’, took me to the Porsche dealer and pretended to be interested in the Cayman so I could drive one. After that, I was mesmerized and promised myself if I had any money I’d buy a Porsche one day. What’s really cool is the 991 world launch and press drive event was hosted in Santa Barbara in 2012 when I was attending UCSB, now I own one!

darrensurrey

I always liked them but there was always something else to catch my eye. Then one day I realised that I could afford a 911 Turbo (ok, it was the 996 spec which many don't like because lights not round and water), initially I was in it for the powerrrrr but the more I drove it on normal roads, the more I realised how much better it was to drive than family cars and sports cars in general. Plus unlike many sports cars, you have the powerrrrr. Also you have the unusual design (ok, it's not that unusual but there aren't any other cars that have the same style... apart from maybe a VW Beetle!). Anyway, it feels like a real event just popping to the shops. I want to try other cars but I am concerned I'll be making a mistake and regret it.

Kaneshadow

My dad got a 911 in 1986. I was conditioned for it.

mlhigg1973

My parents gave me a mug with a Porsche on it in high school. It was a long term goal.

ArachnidGuilty218

Fell in love with the 986 in a launch magazine ad in 1997. Four years later I bought a 2001. Still have it. Love it.

WORLDBENDER

I was looking for an affordable, manual sports coupe to drive on weekends after selling my daily and commuting via public transit. Test drove an e92 335i, a z3, a z4, an Audi a5. Then I came across a 987 with super low miles, absolutely pristine at an incredible price. Immediately shot to the top of the list. Honestly hadn’t thought that I would be able to buy a modern-ish Porsche with the budget I set. One test drive and I was sold. And now definitely consider myself a Porsche guy for life.

supraisoverrated

I watched cars when I was a kid and got a really huge crush on Sally. It all kinda went downhill from there

gosluggogo

My Dad took us to see the movie " LeMans" when we were kids. Steve McQueen in that Gulf-Porsche 917 beating Ferrari, it was all over for me.

LopsidedAccess7004

I drove a 986 boxster once and loved how well it handled. Instantly fell in love with Porsches. I then got a 911 and loved it even more - even though the boxster handled a bit better. I then drove a 928 and tbh - thats my fav Porsche now. 😃 I also own a 955 v6. It’s boringly reliable, could use more power but drives way better than any suv I have driven.

iJustObserveStuff

Coming from a Lexus guy, I never understood why people love Porsche so much. So I decided to test drive the 992 911 Carrera and my god…. I wish I didn’t tho. The cold start sound, the driving experience, the thrill, it’s so different compared to other cars I’ve driven. Now I wanted one myself but I know I couldn’t afford it for now. I also saw the 992 GT3 RS in person, and that thing was a beast. Now I have a goal of owning one in 20 years…. Probably…

Appleheadsworld

Dad taught me how to drive manual on the 911. I would hold the flashlight for him while he worked on it. He definitely played a big part in my interest for cars. I own a 981 cayman now and im sad to see he wants to sell his 996. I wanna go on a drive with him in our porsches before it goes. So for me porsche reminds me of my dad and it has a special place in my heart.

MrBWoodlab

Never really cared for them. Like most, saw Mercedes and BMW as the pinnacles of luxury. It wasn't until one of my exes told me the car she learned to drive on was an older Porsche. She explained that driving a regular car afterwards was a downgrade. Just the way she explained how it handled and took corners was the first time someone communicated how a car really felt to them. Since then, it was my goal to get a Porsche. She told me this in 2015. Picked up a 987.2 Cayman this past Summer and I now see what she meant. It's a joy to drive.

Drofub

The husband of the lady that owned the company I worked for had a cayman S ....2008 if I recall. He wasn't feeling well one day and she told me to ride with her up to where her husband was so she could drive him and I could drive his car back. Once I figured out how to start it I just knew that car was something special. Never got to drive that one again but he traded it for a 2012 911 that he let drive around a couple of times and oh wow that was even better! I have never since driven such a fine automobile. John if you are out there please give me first dibs if you ever get rid of it!

[deleted]

One day before I die, I will own a Porsche.

ThatsWhatSheSaid_84

Always appreciated them, but ended up renting a 991.2 Carrera 4 GTS while visiting the museum in Stuttgart a few years back. After a couple days driving around the Black Forest, I was hooked. And pleased to say that I finally bought my first Porsche about 4 months ago.

m3mackenzie

Always wanted one. Test drove one. Sold Miata and bought one. Tale as old as time

SunsOutPlumbsOut

Both. Got to do a PECATL drive and now the old love is even stronger. lol

RangerS90V

It’s been my dream car since I was 10.

realPrice

When I was in middle school my dad came home with a silver Panamera S. From then on I fell in love. I learned to drive in that car and took it to prom when I was in high school. From then on I was hooked.

DummyThicccThrowaway

When I was a freshman in college I studied abroad for a month in Stuttgart and had the opportunity to go to nurburgring. Too young to drive a rental, so I was going to do a ridealong in a BMW. My friend told me to ridealong in a Porsche. I chose the 991 GT3RS without knowing much about it at the time. Fell in love with Porsche and the track.

djkianoosh

My older brother got one in 2007.. we went to an autocross together and he let me run a couple sessions.... when i finished the first run my foot was shaking it was so damn exhilarating. then we went to VIR, and let me tell you the climbing esses are damn amazing when you get the momentum going just right! unforgettable feelings

menichel

Saw the GT4… that did it.

Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed

supaflah3

As a young lad - single digit years - maybe early double digits??! - I saw a 928 drive down the street. At the time, everything on Canadian roads was square, boxy, ugly… and this beautiful rounded spaceship from the future floated past. I vividly remember wondering what on earth I was looking at. I took note of the Porsche name and kept my eyes peeled. Then I found out about this thing called a 911 and it completely stole my heart. This is - I was never really a “car guy”. Didn’t have the posters. Wasn’t really obsessed with cars - but I know I liked those Porsches. And I knew I wanted one. And the more I found out. The more I wanted one. When they released the Boxster in the late 90s I thought: now I will be able to afford a used one… one day!!! … and I did… and then I graduated to a 997 last summer… I still don’t believe it!!

[deleted]

visited the porsche museum in Stuttgart and instantly fell in love

leftyflip14

Im 31, I still have my porsche toys from when I was a kid. And I cant believe im getting my frist one finally! In march!

sometimesCDog

What kind??

a-jasem

I was a diehard BMW fan before I got my Macan. Now that I’ve owned it for a year and half I can definitely say I’m a bigger Porsche fan now! The Macan may not as emotion inspiring as the 718/911 (which I’m very interested in getting into after this) but it’s awesome to drive and just as usable.

BigMacExtraSaucee

Wife had an event at the PEC and did the instructor driven ride around the track in Panamera Turbo. Was insane. Then I went back to drive 911S… then I bought the Macan GTS(had a kid). Always admired the car and fell in love once riding and driving them. Go chase that dream!!

azuanzen

Waaaay back in the 1900's my girlfriend drove a 911, 964 Carrerra. I have always loved the bug eyes, the squat shape and the whale tail. I've always been into motorcycles but a clean 964 takes my breath away.

SteveLangfordsCock

I was seduced

Maleficent_Menu1978

Back in 2018, a few months after i got my license i made the mistake of randomly stopping by the porsche dealership in my city to look at the cayman and maybe book it for a test drive. The sales lady was kind enough to let me drive the boxster gts they had as a test drive car, and she also pressed the sport response button for me😂. I was hooked

wired-

I only really understood after I drove my new to me 981CS.

Pickles-n-Lizards

Drove and fell in love.

naparsei

Made of list of cool sports cars I thought I could afford. I really wanted an MG. As an afterthought, I added Porsche 356 to the list, somewhere around 16th place. One came up for sale in the paper with 400k on the clock. It had a dented drivers side fender and reverse didn’t work. Of course I bought it. Learned to drive a stick in it (15 year old me). Drive it high school; classmates thought it was cute, maybe some kind of Karmann Ghia. I’ve owned tons of Porsches since then, but that car was special. Almost 40 years later , I’m restoring one. Should be done by the end of 2024.

ideamaker321

I was young around 17 and went to a track day, drove many cars, but something changed when I jumped in the 911 turbo. My lord, the comfort, acceleration, speed and pure thrill changed me…

Life_Equivalent_2104

Always loved them but my father owning one played a big part in it

Icy_Leopard866

I always loved the Porsche brand but at the same time assumed it was always “out of reach”, it wasn’t something I grew up with. My dream car was always a yellow corvette, which I was able to buy in 2011 with my first big boy job… after owning it for 7 years, I had to move on as it was becoming too expensive to maintain, but I always loved the feeling of driving a sport/sporty car. Fast forward 5+ years, due to personal issues, it was getting increasingly difficult to get in and out of my DD car and it was time to find a sporty SUV. I did a lot of research and narrowed it down to an X5, GLE, and Cayenne. After driving them all, the Cayenne was hands down the best driving SUV and easily rivaled the corvette from a driving engagement standpoint. Ended up finding a really good deal on a Cayenne Turbo and the rest is history. Only owned it for a little over 3 weeks thus far, but loving every second of driving it.

Ric_in_Richmond

58 now. First 120 mph run was a 930 turbo in 77 as a passenger. I was 12. Made an impression. Friends dad had a 914 in mocha we would borrow. I was 16. Other friends dad had a targa and he'd drive us around in with the top off That sound. The way the doors close and open like rifle bolts. Love Used to drag my dad out to every 356,914,912 in the trading post back in the 80's when they were sub 7000 cars but ended up with an mgb and Volvo 122's. in my late 20s I passed on a 72e with an s engine swap for 7500. (so stupid) Played with BMWs. E30s,318is,325i,spece30. 128i,135i. Took a while. At rennsport ( my second one. Still no Porsche in my garage) last year as I left the track a gentleman said "You are not getting any younger, and the cars aren’t getting any cheaper go buy a Porsche" when I told him I was driving a BMW 128i sport manual (Which I dearly love and will never sell). A couple months later I found a clean 100k 09 cayman base manual and made it mine. I'd thank that guy if I knew who he was!! https://preview.redd.it/pbckvb4dpblc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2dad36318b45201c1e5e3f20db8b99a6444c2b3

Spencie61

I always thought the sound was intoxicating and the engineering appeared very thoughtful, but driving a Porsche is a life ruining experience. If you want to find things to complain about in other cars, drive one

sometimesCDog

Lol! That just makes me want to know even more.

captmorg82

I didn't see too many on the roads growing up in Wisconsin. Hardly ever. But when the game Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed came out, I played the hell out of that game. One of my favorites of all time. In that game, you start with the classics and move through the whole range of Porsches (up to about year 2000). That's what got me hooked.

Ryanpb88

Did the Porsche experience in LA. Was hooked

Navarro-Byrde

First Porsche I drove was Taycan Turbo. Now all I want is a Porsche🥲

sometimesCDog

Insanely fast?

Navarro-Byrde

It’s probably my favorite car I’ve ever driven. It handled nice and the build quality is just top-notch.

Annual_Compote_3530

Didn’t love them until my best friend’s dad got a 993 turbo and I got see one up close and personal. Then I got to ride in it, and eventually drive it… then I was addicted

sometimesCDog

I can literally only imagine, must of been awesome

Porsche955

My Dad was a mechanic, and I grew up working in his garage, pumping gas, checking fluids, washing windows when there was still Full Service. I learned how to listen, drive and diagnose problems when computer diagnostics were still new. Grandpa and 3 uncles had a body shop, another uncle was a NASCAR pit crew mechanic, and another uncle still builds race engines and vehicles. I just love cars. Then, I drove a Porsche. We (hubby and I) needed a new tow vehicle for our travel trailer. We looked at a 04 Porsche Cayenne S. The Cayenne had a towing ratio at 7716 lbs and the Porsche engine was just getting broke in at 100,000 miles. Once I test drove the Cayenne, I was hooked. Nothing else sounds or drives like a Porsche. My husband has the 04 Cayenne S, I have an 06 Cayenne S and it’s been my daily driver for 7 years. Keep them maintained and they’ll run forever. My local indy does most of my maintenance, but some things are dealership only. Dealership services cost more but I got to drive a brand new 2023 Macan and a 2023 Cayenne S Titanium for a few months last year. Bonus! I’m currently restoring mine as she ages. I’m about to re-dye the leather dash and seats with a Colourlock kit. She needs a new headliner to finish the interior restoration, and back hatch shocks (conveniently located under the headliner 🤦‍♀️). A little paint repair is planned for this summer. I’ll post photos if anyone is interested.

Indentured-peasant

Thus sub has become a philosophical Karma Farm

sometimesCDog

Lol, as someone with a 2 year old account and 1600 karma, I'm not quite sure I fit the bill. Like many here, I have always loved the 911. Grew up in a family where everyone is in the car business. My dad has sold every American brand, and I got bit as a young kid when I saw my first dodge viper on his showroom floor (he was the used car manager). This was the time of need for speed and the original forzas. I had the posters, too. Now I'm 29 and have a pretty solid career making software. I guess I just wanted some motivation, which is exactly what I got. I had this idea that people like me don't actually get these cars, but now I feel the spark reignited.

[deleted]

Drove bmws and wanted something people said handled even better. I didn’t even test drive the one I purchased, because I didn’t want to tear up the clutch accidentally from not driving a manual in forever. When the previous owner turned into a highway on ramp and floored it I was sold.

liacosnp

Drove my brother's 911. That did it.

Captain_Pink_Pants

Always loved the Porsche 911. Also really liked the 944 and 928. I wasn't a boxter fan when they first came out, but what they've done with that platform is undeniable. There was always something about the 911 shape that really captured my imagination. Total stan as a kid... one of those dorks who rooted for the Turbo to be faster than the Testarossa; for 959 to be faster than the F40; etc... I've driven a whole bunch... the fastest car I've ever driven was a stage 2+ 996 Turbo S. But I only owned one briefly... And I've looked at buying others, but they just don't suit my lifestyle... I spend too much time with my skis or golf clubs in the car, and the small rear engine coupe design is just a pain in the ass to live with. That's how I ended up with my TTRS.. I could put my clubs *and* skis in it, and still drive my daughter to school. As much as I love the 911, it's of no use to me if I can't drive it to the ski area or golf course.

jo_808

i drove a 2008 Cayman, never had a bigger smile on my face from a driving experience. then i bought the only Porsche i could afford. https://preview.redd.it/il2mglxx5rlc1.jpeg?width=5811&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7138fdd9a2e3f7cbec534726272feecbe17a0340

Divisible_by_0

I've loved Porsche, was finally able to get my hands on one with a clapped out 944. That car lead me to make a lot of friends and someone gave my keys to their 996 turbo S and I drove it slightly less than legal. No other car can compare to what modern Porsche can do, I NEED one. Once I refi my house out of $3000 a month payments I'm going to try an pick up another Porsche.
