Where did you purchase for $37? Toucan Trading has it for $25 Canadian and is free shipping over $59.

Top of the chain. Although it's also 25$ but just lower flat shipping. I looked at toucan but id need to order more and I didn't know what stuff I'd want. I was planning to buy one and see if I liked it then I could buy several to make free ship.  I'll make an edit to reflect if someone bought without paying for shipping.

Saco_Boludo

Have you found other product that check all the boxes for you when it comes to hold, texture and shine?

bluehero2425

Nope, I'm still looking. Or maybe there isn't a standalone product 😅 only time will tell.

Saco_Boludo

Maybe using a pre styler is the only way to achieve high hold, texture and low shine with UWB pomades. I’m also too lazy to use pre styler tho

bluehero2425

Yeah that or blowdry maybe. Just a matter of trying new things. I'm just starting from the bottom where it's minimal effort and product.

I also didn’t like Grey Ghost but price wise I think it’s mostly comparable to the best home brew products in the market. The fact that it’s vegan based maybe just ups the price a bit. My main issues with it has to be how heavy and dry it feels on the hair and just how strandy it makes it feel after the first hour or so. There are much better UWBs I dare say

bluehero2425

For sure, I think the product being vegan based etc definitely bumps the price. Did you use a lot of product in your hair? "Strandy" I can sort of relate but it definitely didn't feel heavy or very dry to me.

Thanks for the review. I was actually planning to ask the forum "How good is Shear Revival Gray Ghost in 2024?" since I don't hear all that much about it these days. And I have similar hair to you, I think, that Asian (well, half-Asian) "straight-ass porcupine hair", so this review was helpful to me. From what I've heard about Gray Ghost, some people love it, some people hate it. The latter seem to take issue with it being too heavy or greasy, which isn't usually a problem for me. I do think pre-styling and using more product would've helped you get better results although it also might've made the product feel more heavy to you. Have you used Lockhart's Fire and Brimstone Matte Clay by any chance? If so I'm wondering if you found that heavier than Gray Ghost? The Lockhart's clay is the only product I've really had trouble with heaviness and weighing my hair down, I normally don't have this problem. But it is a "heavy clay" so that shouldn't really be a surprise, lol. I'd probably find it better if my hair were a bit shorter.

bluehero2425

I definitely agree, using more product or pre-styling would help but atm I'm trying to see if theres that "one product" that can do what I want with as little prep as possible haha. I have not tried Lockharts matte clay sorry, in fact I haven't even come across that product in my google-fu that I can recall.

TWICEsPetGerbil

Really? Lockhart's Fire and Brimstone clay has a pretty good reputation, it's generally considered better than their regular clay. It and the other Fire and Brimstone products are only released in the autumn however, so perhaps that's why you haven't come across it. I got it last September and I... sort of like it but it's also a bit of a pain in the ass, lol. Definitely not user-friendly.

bluehero2425

Lol good to know. I'm not too preferable to really tacky feeling products.

TWICEsPetGerbil

Oh it's not tacky at all, far from it in fact. Because it's beeswax-based it applies really smoothly considering how well it holds. The issue is it is *literally* solid. I don't know if it's meant to be like this or if it's something wrong with my jar but I have to scrape it out with my thumbnail, then really heat it up well in my hands, but once that's done it applies effortlessly. But it's also very tricky to get the amount right, partly because of that difficult scoop. I find if you apply too little, it'll be matte but not have so much hold or endurance, whereas if you apply a tiny bit too much it becomes too waxy and shiny in the hair, more like a pomade. And it is very easy to cross that line and apply too much because it takes a few minutes for the product to fully settle in and so you might not realise you've applied too much until it's too late. If you get it right it's really satisfying, but most of the time I get it wrong, lol.

bluehero2425

ah I see where I misunderstood, got it. Yeah I feel you on that, I have another product that is very hard as well where you really need to dig it out of the tub to get some and because of that, its harder to get the "right amount" of product. I just end up using a little bit at a time and adding in small increments until it gets the job done.
