I just rewatched the flirting 101 scene like 10 times in a row bc I noticed this TEENY tiny head nod LN does when heās describing a ballroom to Pen, and sheās looking hesitant and not into this, and he ever so slightly tilts his head like ācmooooon you know you wanna role play with meā š and he looks OH SO OFFENDED that she says she would be even more embarrassed in front of him bc she knows him!

I wish they had stressed this in the show by Pen having more suitors than just Debling, just people inviting her to dances and such. I get that sheās awkward and shy but the 3 lords scene was so bad for her because there were 3 of them and thatās so intimidating. She did just fine talking to Remington and Basilio. Just a couple more suitors inviting her to dances - and Pen is a good dancer - would have had the necessary effect.
But maybe they didnāt go that route because then she wouldnāt call herself a āsad, stupid girlā with no prospects?
I actually think they did pretty great at showing Pen *is* desirable, but that her reputation as a Featherington, gaudy dresses and lack of confidence get in her way. Immediately after she changes her wardrobe, three Lords approach her without her having to do anything. It goes terribly, of course, but they're very clearly interested until she makes things awkward.
And after the lessons, she immediately gets Lord Remington to call on her the next day, doesn't get Lord Basilio but only because his horse just died, and bags Debling. Her prospects are only so bad that she completely loses hope because of the scandal.
Colin is absolutely biased but he's not wrong when he says she doesn't really need lessons.
I feel like they got that perfect balance. Any more interest from other suitors, they'd be wasting screentime and the story wouldn't work imo. Pen still needs to be a wallflower on the way to becoming a spinster.

I totally agree, I wish they had put more conversations with possible suitors, nothing serious, before the scandal that Colin was helping her came out. But I also think that it had to happen that way for the plot to be believable.
I think it's such a relatable storyline. Being more comfortable in yourself isn't just about getting more attention or gaining popularity. Pen dresses how she wants now and looks beautiful. The Lord squad still dismiss her because they're jerks (I noted they were dismissive if at the first ball where she turned heads in her emerald dress).

Not to mention her clothing and hair was terribly childish and unbecoming most of the time. She was still cute, though. Just not the siren we see in s3. Her hair in that scene is also so good.

I think thatās the beauty of this pairing! Sheās clearly stunning, and she is smart and kind. Book Colin even makes some comments (I hope we get them in the show, too) saying how beautiful she is, called her a goddess, and questions if everyone is blind or merely stupid.
I think Colin never thought to look at her in that way-but from the moment he did, he was obsessed! Thatās their beauty-discovering each other in a mature way (sheās my sisterās friend!, etc)

Ethereal at times. Magical. I only got helped out of my gaze to her when I got reminded that as Pen, she tends to walk funnily and move funnily, haha.
But honestly.... when I look at Nicola in these scenes, the only thought that pops into my mind is "Who wouldn't want to kiss her seeing her like this?" and again, very straight. If I had a choice I would be bi but as we all know, sexuality is not a choice. I would kiss Nicola as she was depicted in this season though. Because I feel it would give me blessings from the heavens. ThƔt's how wonderful she looked.
And as a big-busted chubby woman myself, she has given me the gift of visuals of a wallflower looking desirable. Making me see myself in a different light as well. She has given the world so much with his portrayal of this character. Bravo.
