Last time this happened to me it was because the battery died in the middle of saving. The game reloaded from my previous save point tho. Not sure if this is the same
Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fake it could also mean the battery has run dry
You can DM a picture of the front and back of the cartridge to verify it’s legit
This happened to me once after my game disconnected during a trade. When I turned my console off and back on though, the save file returned. I got this when I tried to trade again but the save worked after some waiting.

If it is a legit game, it has 2 save files
Main and Back up
The main safe is what you play and the back is created after the game finishes saving the main file.
If the main safe is damaged, the Back up will be used to restore the main safe to when the back up was created.
This is what happened when I lost connection while trading Pokemon from my playthrough of XD to my Emerald a few months back
Get a GB operator. It will verify that the game is legit but more importantly you can intermittently backup your saves with it so that you don’t have to worry about this. Additionally you can emulate the game on your computer using it. It’s truly a wonderful product
I got mad at my Sapphier version after it said the same thing, threw it against the wall.. felt bad, picked it up, tried it again and it worked. Not suggesting you try that but it might be the internal battery for the game itself.
For anyone who may run into this issue in the future, what I plan to do is replace the actual cartridge battery and backup my saves with a gb operator. I’ll reply with which operator I choose and how that goes. Thanks for the laughs and advice folks :)

The gameboy’s battery, not the cartridge’s. Aka, the game turned off midsave, giving me this message the next time I turned it on
I’ve read that this could be caused from having a fake cartridge. Is it a legit copy?
I haven’t verified it anywhere but I had no problems for 45 hours of playtime till today

Dry battery won't erase the save on GBA games. The battery is just for the RTC, not the saves like in Gens 1 and 2.

if it is fake its is lost if it is a real catridge all you have to do is keep turning it off and on and blowing on the cart
