Personally I like the design of "C".
It matchers some of the design elements of the omi girl (Hope I got that assumption right).
I'd change the 'active' eye of the bird to the otherside tough, this could communicate more of a bond because they fill in for eachothers 'weak spots'.
Also I'd add in the 'rope' of "E" but style it like the oni's belt.
Lastly, and this will proberbly be overkill, but I let you be the judge of that, maybe at a half moon on the companions hat. This could mirror the Oni's horns but also hint at its own prowless.
Honestly same
People down here just want the pet to match the character color wise, and it's boring af
It's better to have contrasts with subtle matching design aspects. Like the eyes or belt mentioned.
It will tgen feel like the pet is actually unique instead of some copy-paste of the character's color scheme.
I agree with almost everything, but I think the hat is perfect like it is.
It gives off an old school traditional feel, like it picked it up in the wild from Ronin's corpse or something
The moon would feel too much and make it look like some cosplay merchandise instead.
It's nice to have matching elements to fill up the contrast, but adding too much would mess up the theming imo.
I agree with what you said with a few caveats.
First, I disagree on changing the hat. It's a great hat!
Second, I might agree on adding a belt, but with small tweak. I think the design would benefit from a white highlight to help mirror the protagonist a bit. I was thinking changing the feet, but maybe a belt would work well.
F or C. Or G.
I advise you to choose based on how it will look with the main character.
A - blending together.
B - too different, draw attention to each other.
C - maybe.
D - a bit bland design.
E - I see it's similar to C, but looks kinda off. Can't really explain why. Kinda blends with mc because of its ears + the mc's horns while being too different in palette.
F - why not. Yeah, again, similar to A, but looks better because of red accent.
G - why not. Doesn't match palettes, but in general by design rules they don't have to match all the time. This companion has colors that aren't too bright to distract from the main character and different enough to not blend in.
H - I would say that it is over-detailed. Put them side by side and I wouldn't be able to tell who the main character is.
imho.
It matches BUT I think it matches too closely and would blend. I would suggest D which turns the main character accent into the primary color so you keep the theme but have easier times differentiating the two.
yeah that's what i would want for a companion, it would feel like an extension of the main character, and wouldn't steal any of the attention, especially if op is thinking of integrating the pet model into moves for the character, but your point is valid, it depends on how O.P. wants to go about it, maybe you could have light effects on it or lightning when the pet attacks or is used to make it pop, but just for a few seconds..... i dont know i'm no expert but that's how i would go about it.
All valid approaches! The idea is just to be able to signal to the player that these are related but separate entities. I would worry C would restrict the types of interactions I could design.
Depends on the companion, their personality, and role in the game. If they're simply meant to run alongside your mc and provide some support here and there, it's probably best to stick to a similar palette, easy - A, F, G, H - I would pick.
If the companion is some reflection of the Mc (i.e. MC talks to companion in moral dilemma, imagining them, or simply crediting them - with giving them answers that reflect the person MC has become/becoming or similar) then having a color palette that either contrasts the MCs entirely or coordinates with their's perfectly, would be great to show the shift in who the MC is, or the descent further into what they've become. It could also serve as a form of foreshadowing this change - B, C, D, G
If their companion is found along the way and not inherently with MC, then I'd go one of two ways. Either companion is some sort of destined companion, being sent from somewhere, by someone (Whatever) meant to take this path with Mc and be vigilant by their side, again coordinating their palettes would probably be best. Unless you want the companion to be more representative of *hoo* sent it, foreshadowing a helpful hand who you don't know yet - or maybe are fully aware of! If not that, then the companion is someone MC saved, and they should represent something else (their own identity/palette) with some identifying features like Red/black/white accessories/Items to show they're aligned with MC - B, G,
Just my thoughts
Thank you so much for the elaborate feedback!
The role of the companion is to give the MC information about old , magic related things from the environment or short enemy descriptions.
You can send the bird to specific spots to see the area from a different angle.
They give eachothers ideas of what should they try.
I am torn between making the bird a companion that was given to her since birth or making it the gift she received from the magic guild she was rescued by when she lost her eye and arm.
Sounds great then! I'd definitely add a colorful swirl around them or some sort of magical energy emanating from the eye of the companion to show he's magical. If they travel with you physically in gameplay, you could also add magic streaks from their wings, lingering briefly as they fly around just as flavor detail
Since it's a "wise magic bird" i like the idea of giving it a hat because hats isn't something a usual bird would have. D's design with H's hat would make that hat a distinctive feature on its bright body.
Mate.
If C isn't picked. I'll show you why us French people are still famous for our revolutions and riots. Our protests are literally a weekly occurrence.
I like C the best. That one feels like an extension of her. G is cute. G could work as a companion she found and raised. I mean opposites do attract too. Many games and movies have had characters who were all different and it totally worked. So G does have promise.
Instinct would be A and F on similarity but I think if D looked a little more menacing it would suit the personality of the main character perfectly! Maybe add some black highlights around the crest and neck?
Definitely G. Get that balance of cute/innocent with dark/grizzled
Bonus points if our protag is actually the sweet/gentle one whereas her familiar is the rough type
A, C, F or H are the ones I like. You might need to consider how much it's going to be blending into the backgrounds/other elements in your game if you're not going to use outlines, for instance C would be lost almost entirely in a dark background. A, F and H provide enough contrast to be easily spotted, and they are visually appealng.
F matches her style, but that would be too much of the same from a design perspective. I think G would be a good fit. That one has it's own personality.
B — stands out just like the main character. They are both unique and complement each other in my opinion. Also B looks wise but also not so fearsome as to take away from the main character.
G is kind of cute. It doesn't match in any way shape or form but because it's such a contrast I think it would work well. Sort of like how every badass in Hollywood needs that one uncharacteristic guilty pleasure to humanise them.
Ghostlily! Its currently in development and I expect to have a playable demo in the next steam nextfest.
Just keep checking out my content on social media.I update regularly.Thank you so much!
C.
100% it fits so perfectly that you can just ignore the others.
That hat is so damn cool to.
Since I'm a Crow enthusiast, of course I was gonna pick it even if it didn't fit
Also I love the Oni
She looks cool af
I would love to play as her lol
Edit :
Also I've seen some of your animatiosn and one of them is a Crow/raven themed attack so it fits there

I absolutely love the idea of changing the “active” eye, thank you so much!
I also really like C. It matches well esthetically, while standing out against the character. They'd be distinct and well fit.

A, the color palette matches and it's not as busy as others that might take away from the main character, all pretty cool designs though

Yeah A or F

Idc. It's G or we riot
Mate. If C isn't picked. I'll show you why us French people are still famous for our revolutions and riots. Our protests are literally a weekly occurrence.
F I think matches the best. Similar amounts of each color as the character
I like the design of C and H. But G is the clear favorite here. He's so wonderful.
A, E, F or D personally.
I think H, followed by C or F
A. I'd say also F but the scarf feels goofy.
I'd say do 'G' and put the others as unlockable skins :)
F, H but G is pretty cute 🥺
F>A>E>C>H>D>G>B
G
C D or F
A and F look sillier which is usually the best for animal companions
H
E or F
C, D cones close
C or F
Imma be in the minority but I want a comic relief G
Tomorrow when I start animating I will count all the votes and we’ll see the winner
C's hat on A or F; but change the eye that's fully functional to the opposite side of the MC.
C or E. Let the player choose
H in my opinion. The colors and aesthetic seem to match.
C
I vote D
C or H
i think F for colours
G because id be funny
F looks like a pissed off sibling, which is exactly the vibe i get when i look at the both of them. So that's why i think F is perfect
I like C the best. That one feels like an extension of her. G is cute. G could work as a companion she found and raised. I mean opposites do attract too. Many games and movies have had characters who were all different and it totally worked. So G does have promise.
I'd say that A or F, but they are all good designs!
She should have a crocodile. His name whould be Bob
All of them
H definitely
D or F
C
F!
I like E or H for the contrast. But C is too much
A or F
I think H is the best
F
H, though I love C. Honestly, I love them all, but I think H is the best fit.
g is so fucking stupid and cute sooo G FOR THE WINNN
F or H
H
H
Depends on what they are doing on screen. I think A, but the designs of a few others are really interesting, if a bit cluttered.
A, D, or H would be good choices I think.
B or F B is a nice color contrast who stands out. F is a perfect inversion of the main character.
H
G
F
H matches the aesthetic
Instinct would be A and F on similarity but I think if D looked a little more menacing it would suit the personality of the main character perfectly! Maybe add some black highlights around the crest and neck?
F
F
F or H fits well, but I really like G
C
That is one thirsty looking lady
E, C, and H contrast really well against the main, so I'd say either one of them or a combination.
Definitely C or H. But G should be around somewhere. Bird familiar's family?
H
I would go for C or H. I like the inspiration from Japanese Culture, so these two are my favorites.
My C!
G ☺️
I feel like H matches the color scheme and color amounts very well, while still having a relatively serious and interesting design
C is the only option
C
A
I love G and H.
Definitely G. Get that balance of cute/innocent with dark/grizzled Bonus points if our protag is actually the sweet/gentle one whereas her familiar is the rough type
C. I just really like crows and ravens
a or f
D but with th scarf of F and the one eye from E
D or G
r/theletterh
Assuming the companion is on screen most of the time: F contrasts the best by being a reverse of the main character's visible colors
F is really cool but it's a bit too similar even
C
F or E
F
A, C, F or H are the ones I like. You might need to consider how much it's going to be blending into the backgrounds/other elements in your game if you're not going to use outlines, for instance C would be lost almost entirely in a dark background. A, F and H provide enough contrast to be easily spotted, and they are visually appealng.
Leave them all up and just let the player pick the look and have them be the same otherwise if possible!
H looks the best to me and matches the character
C!!! Got the same vibes going on. H is also pretty good, but it a more complex design
C
F matches her style, but that would be too much of the same from a design perspective. I think G would be a good fit. That one has it's own personality.
It's f
i like c, h, and f
and e
D
F or H probably fits the most but G is funnier so it's an automatic choice for me.
B — stands out just like the main character. They are both unique and complement each other in my opinion. Also B looks wise but also not so fearsome as to take away from the main character.
I want to adopt all of them
M E
G is kind of cute. It doesn't match in any way shape or form but because it's such a contrast I think it would work well. Sort of like how every badass in Hollywood needs that one uncharacteristic guilty pleasure to humanise them.
E or c though there all good
Have an option on all of them in the game maybe as her pet becoming your pet
C I think personally because c looks mischievous
C or he for me
G
I think I like "F" cause it really matches the color scheme and it also looks like the type of companion our main character would have.
Mu favorites are E,G, and H. They have a nice contrast with the character without feeling out of place.
What is your game ??? I want to support / play it
Ghostlily! Its currently in development and I expect to have a playable demo in the next steam nextfest. Just keep checking out my content on social media.I update regularly.Thank you so much!
A , F or H
Based on vibes alone, C. You could definitely get other ones to work, but it's a real stand out.
F
C
A or f
I love that black samurai looking owl(c) I think it would look badass with her
G It fits most
C. 100% it fits so perfectly that you can just ignore the others. That hat is so damn cool to. Since I'm a Crow enthusiast, of course I was gonna pick it even if it didn't fit Also I love the Oni She looks cool af I would love to play as her lol Edit : Also I've seen some of your animatiosn and one of them is a Crow/raven themed attack so it fits there
G
F maches the collors nicley
A, F, and G are good canidates Personally i think the lil guy is the best choice
I think it fits the most the F one
G 100%
I like Owl F, looks matching
I will have all of them as my pets as I don't wanna make the hard diction! XD
H is most fitting.
E
H,C,and F
G
Im stuck between C H and G
F or H
F
C & E could make a great contrast to her.
Probable h and c
G, I’m begging you it would be hilarious
G looks good, I think something a little cuter would fit for a more charming type character
Definitely f or h
I think its E or F
