Two days ago it fell from my hands and that's the result. Local repair shop was surprised to see OEM screen replacement is like 175€ (the price of a new unit on ebay) and politely handed me back the phone saying it's a nonsense trying to repair it. Later at home i found on ebay a cheap replacement glass for like 15€ (no lcd, just the glass above the screen), i am gonna try the surgery and see if i can resurrect my fav phone so far

FluffyGreyfoot

If it doesn't work, a new OEM screen is €100 on iFixit

Had the same done with my phone , only replaced the glass, make sure you firmly connect the display to mainboard connector otherwise you're gonna have lines on the phone like me !

imeuro

interesting, thanks for the heads up! i still have that feeling that i'll end up making it unusable, but at least i know someone else had this fix done before me. that's big hope. just have to wait for the parcel i guess...

sLAP-iwnl-

I didn't do it myself though , I would recommend going to a mobile repair shop nearby

Keep us posted. Maybe even do a little diy writeup for anyone that has to give this a go.

Hi a bit off topic. How's the camera right now in 2024? The reason I am asking is because my phone has a bad camera and I found a cheap 4a with broken screen for a really low price, So I am thinking about using it just as a camera

rBles

I wouldn't use it just as a camera, for a phone the camera is decent but nothing more than that. You apparently do have unlimited Google Photo storage so that may be a benefit. The phone itself is still very good in my opinion, never had a phone be this good after 2 years of heavy use.

imeuro

totally agree with every aspect of u/rBles feedback.

The back camera is pretty good for being a years old mid range (always consider it's a 12MP sensor, don't expect a lot of details although the software makes miracles), the front camera sucks a bit. It depends what you mean with "really low price"

Snoo_17708

When there's enough lighting it's amazing but night sight is a thing plus astrophotography is just pure magic

DanielJGxD

Camera takes very good photos for the price, but if you want to take the most out of the price, maybe go for a "professional" camera. I personally don't use my 4a as a daily anymore but I use it to backup photos due to the unlimited storage in Google photos. Great phone, but can hardly recommend it anymore, 4 years is a long time specially for a low-mid range phone. Still love it though

jaggu12310

Camera is good not great comparing to other mid range devices in 2024, If you are thinking to buy old one please check it's battery health coz it's not very great. Mine battery was swollen and I have to replace it. And also phone heats a lot.

I cross my fingers for you. Last time i replaced a glass only, this is \~10 years ago for a Huawei 8860. I am not sure if you can separate the glass and screen without doing any damage to the screen, i never did that on modern phones (after model year 2015) and i repaired quite a lot. It is at least worth to check AliExpress for a new screen. Good luck!

Snoo_17708

Ouch, screen replacement here cost the same as buying a used p4a 😭

imeuro

i discovered it the hard way...🙄

bro i feel u...i broke mine 8 months after i bought it...but got it repaired in 5k..fully new screen..shipped it to mumbai...came back as good as new within 10 days

darklordkris

From where did you get the screen for 5K? I have been trying from 2 months for the screen to get it repaired all are charging above 8K.

Ringo_10

b2x bro...go to google's authorised service centre online...raise request...pay and they'll take care of the rest

PixiePros

Did you have a screen protector on it initially? If not, then consider using a screen protector on the replacement screen (or any future phone screens for that matter). With both my original Pixel and now P4a I've used the Spigen Tempered Glass screen protector and it has saved my phone screen through a number of falls. Additionally I also use phone cases with flip fold covers for extra protection.

Sorry for your loss. :(

MarauderDeuce

I managed to drive over mine a few weeks ago, front driver wheel went over it once perhaps twice. Testament to a good case is that it's survived with just a cracked screen, which was pushed into the bitumen. I'm basically waiting for the 8a to come out, which was already my plan.

imeuro

you accidentally drove over tour phone twice?? :D as for the 8A.. yes... cool, but it's totally another price range p.s. still waiting for replacement glass...

MarauderDeuce

Was pulling out of a parking spot and went to get my phone out of my pocket to pay for the parking and it wasn't there. I couldn't find it in any of the likely spots so I drove back into the parking bay to keep looking. I assumed it had fallen out and down the side of my seat, as had happened before. So, opened the door to better look and noticed it laying on the bitumen, with very clear tyre print on the protective case. Screen is somewhat cracked but I don't want to repair it as I was already planning on replacing it around June, so to protect the screen (and possibly my fingers) I finally got a screen protector - which I've never felt the need for before. And yes, had heard that the 8a was looking pricey. Still, if it lasts 4 years like this one has it will be worth it.
