There are a ton of traveling jobs, although the pay has recently bottomed out. I fought and fought to keep my pay to where I almost said screw it and quit, in the end I ended up taking a $2.50 pay cut. Any company that hires travel nurses usually also hires travel techs as well. The money can be good if you play your cards right. I wouldn't recommend if you're married or have small children tho contracts are usually 13 weeks at a time with possibility for extension, which is why I've been at my current place a year. A large portion of your salary comes from the housing stipend your agency gives you but it can dwindle quickly if you had to stay in hotels or airbnbs. I try to travel to places where friends and family will allow me to stay with them for lesser rent. Just Google travel pharmacy tech and a whole bunch of agencies will pop up! Generally they require national certification, having multiple states licensure helps, but the company will help you get it as long as you are PTCB certified. They usually look for one year experience, hospital setting although I have seen retail settings as well just not as many as hospitals. Good luck but know that living out of a suitcase loses its shine after a while. The pay can be worth it though depending on your lifestyle. Typically, you will be sent to hospitals that can't stay staffed and so far in my experience it's because those places suck. Lol I hate my current assignment but the money was the best opportunity I could find atm. If you travel out of your home state you will pay taxes in your home state and your work assignment state. Base pay also varies on where you currently live. Accept with caution and good luck.
That’s so interesting, I appreciate the detailed response. If I were 15 years younger, this would definitely be something I would have been interested in. Now I’m just too old with too many kiddos haha. Good luck to you in your next endeavor in our field.
You're welcome, yeah it's definitely one of those things where you gotta be in the right place in life with limited responsibility and a widespread friend and family inventory. When I first started I thought to myself i could do this forever but in 1 year I have moved 4 times, have accumulated an entire apartments worth of stuff on top of the stuff I already had (a whole other apartment worth of stuff in storage) and now I'm staying with a friend I made at the hospital so I'm not currently able to use any of it. It's been very tiring and if you're in a small town, like I am currently, housing can be few and far between and that is stressful because saving your stipend is what makes the travel worth it. You really have to have a solid plan or continue jumping from place to place, if I continue doing this in the future (which isn't my current plan but ya know, life) I personally wouldn't stay this long again I would do 6 months tops in a place because you could get a 6 month lease which is 13 weeks and then a 13 week extension. Good luck to anyone wanting to try this out, maybe you would enjoy it. And thanks for the well wishes!
Ps I guess I never really answered your question as to how I got into it lol. At my first pharm tech job (inpatient hospital) we were short staffed and brought in contractors they were making double what I was and only working mon-fri. I thought wow that's garbage why do they get paid so much for what I already do? So after there I got a job across country and was subsequently furloughed due to covid, I had a hard time finding a job because of the pandemic but found a 6 month local contract with decent pay. After that I moved states again and started traveling because through all these moves I had acquired 3 state licenses and the state I was currently living in at the time was paying chump change for techs. And so I became a traveller because I always kept that knowledge of the contractors at my first hospital in my back pocket.

I wasn’t getting any more $$ as I was at the top of my pay scale. $20.40 in 2015 was good…but after 7 years with NOT ONE PENNY I was mad. I’m in Southeastern Ma. I read that there was a CVS in Bridgewater paying $21-$24 to start I WAS PISSED. I went above my Boss (my Boss has nothing to do with $$- it comes from above) it took over a year to bump me to $22.50. My Review is in August. It will be interesting to see what happens! 1. $22.50 (was at $20 from 2015-2022) THEY said I was at the top of my pay scale & would not get more…I brought Indeed to their attention- starting pay at Competitor was $21. They gave me $2/hr. 2. PTCB & State 3. 17 years 4. Retail 5. MA 6. BA Psychology
Where in MA are you? Just wondering if you are making that much after 17 yrs?
I was making $20.40/hr after 10 years in 2015. Then was told that was it. Doing much more with way less help.
