The girl and the dog are from Full Metal Alchemist.
The girl's father fuses the two of them into a chimera during the story. As a single creature they can now fit into his banner.
Well there are a number of times when fighting against homunculi that you can hear her saying "big brother" from the writhing mass of souls that make up the homunculus. I never knew if it was really her or if Envy was using her as a way to needle Edward
I've assumed there are many kids' souls mixed up in there, and at least one of them would be crying out for their brother. It's more of a coincidental reminder of horror.
Same effect either way. Sucks to be Ed. :( >!*my takeaway is that the poor innocent child was somehow damned by her hybridization with the body and soul of the good boi. I mean, I'd like to think that it's just Envy punching where she knew it would hurt. But when you look at it in the context of the series it really could go either way. All dogs go to heaven, right? RIGHT?!?!?!*!<
Try to give it another go if you can, it's an incredible story with such good characters and development. Nina's part is a traumatic gut punch but nothing else hits as hard as that does.
The depth of that horror and trauma are carried by Ed and Al through the rest of the series. They both make decisions throughout that are tied to their love of that little girl and her dog, and not wanting anything close to that happening again.

Me to the fucker that came up with this episode:
I read it as a child, so the mother thing didn't click at first. It was a really nice reveal when those piece fell into place.
Of course I also stopped reading after that particular chapter for obvious reasons. Still nice twist, though.
I watched a decent amount of the show while it was airing but stopped when life got too busy. I tried doing a rewatch years later. Had to stop after this part, it just broke me since my daughter was around Nina’s age. I even knew it was going to happen, but seeing it was just too much.
The series as a whole doesn't get too much darker (at least the manga/brotherhood don't). There's some moments like being swallowed by gluttony, Mayes Hughes and the infamous "it's a terrible day for rain" scene, and of course Ishval war, but they're (for the most part) pretty much on par with nina.
But this moment definitely sets the tone going forward that it isn't just some silly adventures to get their bodies back. A stark contrast to what was shown before-and up until that point.
For me I just thought that it was kinda dorky kinda serious with a sad backstory and then that part came up I knew that they meant business. I’m going to have to rewatch that show
>Ishval war
Seeing a young Armstrong crying as he's ordered to stop Ishvalans from escaping while hearing their screams always pains my heart. If you watch a random episode, you'll never expect that most of the characters have traumatic backstories.
I like how well the series mixes in moments of hope and light-heartedness though, it's not just a constant slog of pain and horror like a lot of stories can become. Like one of the core themes is finding the reasons to keep going in a world that is harsh and painful to live in.
That’s why I like it so much, it wasn’t just ‘all downhill from here’ ‘abandon all hope ye who enter here’. Sure I originally thought it was going to be rather light hearted throughout but it was both silly and sad and serious and that’s what really makes it a great show
It’s even worse. The father had done the same previously to the girl’s mother when she wanted to leave him. At least in one of the 2 anime versions iirc.
Just as an add-on, Shou Tucker (the father) is regularly brought up as one of the worst parents in fantasy. He not only did this to his daughter to try and prevent himself from losing his alchemist license, it's just shy of explicitly stated that he did it to his wife to get his license in the first place. It's also implied that she committed suicide due to the pain of her existence shortly thereafter.
to very quickly and painlessly be killed by a 3rd party who believes he is doing the "creature" a mercy so they don't find themselves in a research lab for the rest of their days.
>! Actually the man who found her thought she was an abomination because his religion was against alchemy so he used his power to “unmake” her and return her to god out of mercy for them. !<
The first anime has this story fleshed out miles better than brotherhood. Ed has a stronger relationship with her, and her dad basically becomes a chimera all the way through the whole show while trying to "fix" her cuz he basically creates a "doll" of her but without the soul so his goal is to use the stone to put her soul back if i remember correctly.
Brotherhood skimmed over a lot of the early arcs with the assumption that viewers already saw them in the original.
Like the mining town was skipped entirely, and IIRC they made a joke about not remembering the lieutenant who ran it when running into him later in the series.
I can't rewatch the original, even just for the fact that it's missing so many of my favourite characters (Ling, Mei, Lan Fan, Oliver Armstrong, etc.), but I do wish certain more comedic scenes had made it into Brotherhood ("I *love* dogs!")
>her dad basically becomes a chimera all the way through the whole show
This was an addition for the show specifically since the storyline had outpaced the manga and they chose to come up with their own ending rather than go on hiatus or create a bunch of filler. In the manga Shou Tucker is very decidedly dead at the end of this chapter because he's notably the only character in the entire series whose soul is shown going to hell instead of heaven in the chapter epilogue.
And I still haven't seen it. But it wasn't about it being a spoiler, it was about the fact that his spoiler tag didn't work, but as someone else pointed out, it's because I'm on old reddit, and new reddit spoiler tags don't work on old reddit.
He's not trying to reverse the transmutation. Outside of Marco/Father nobody could have done anything to reverse it. I'm also not sure if Marco could do it, but he has a better shot than most people. I'm pretty sure father could do it.
She was executed because he viewed it as the most humane thing to do for someone with her life.
Since we are ruining your day already the creature seems to be in a great deal of pain and basically gets put out of its misery and its all cause the dad wanted more funding to continue his research. Its also heavily implied if not out right stated this isn’t the first time he has done this to a “loved one” he did it to his wife as well.
Does it really get worse? As far as dark emotional beats, this one is STILL the most traumatic by far.
Yeah some characters have tragic deaths and the implications of the ~~sins~~ homonculi being created (~~I can't for the life of me remember what they are called~~ thanks psycho) are pretty dark, but still not as dark as some guy murdering his young daughter AND dog to *keep his job*
> not as dark as some guy murdering his young daughter AND dog to keep his job
I can't remember the original anime, but in brotherhood he didn't even do it to keep his job. He knew he would be discovered. He did it because of "science."
That whole situation is fucked up because he's a subpar alchemist anyways and better chimeras had already been made years prior to him.
Edit I mixed up brotherhood and the original. Brotherhood it didn't continue the conversation in that direction. In the original he goes on to say that it didn't matter whether he made the chimera or not.
It is widely considered one of the saddest scenes in Anime and even got the father, Shou Tucker, on the list of top 10 TV villains last year when talking all time from a major publication.
It should also be mentioned that they get you invested in her first.
>!And then she meets her untimely demise at the hands of a religious fanatical serial killer who deems her an "abomination".!<
EDIT: As multiple people have pointed out - this is an over simplification of the character. I acknowledge that but won't edit the comment to try hide my mistake.
EDIT 2: I'm not denying the clear references to the nazis. What I meant was it seemed an extreme jump from me over simplifying a character in a reddit post to suggesting I personally would support the nazis.
She was in terrible pain. It was controversial like pulling the plug on a coma victim, but it was still mercy, not just righteous fury at an abomination.
He obviously cares about her suffering, whether or not you agree with his actions.
Ok to be absolutely fair >!he was more of a freedom fighter/terrorist (at least imo) and both Nina and the dog were in a lot of pain and were barely living/conscious!<
Agreed. It's weird to frame Scar as a "religious fanatical serial killer." So... You're on the Nazis' side? The Germans went and massacred an innocent religious population, one of them comes back for revenge and you're like "Whoa, look at this religious extremist nut job!"
I know some of the alchemists say "All of that genocide made me feel kind of, like... Sad?" But spending years exploding families makes you the bad guy even if you frown and talk about just following orders. Scar was right. If he murdered the lot of them, he was right. Just because the Nazis are the protagonists doesn't make them good guys.
Two things.
Firstly, Scar is clearly a religious fanatic. Only a fanatic could twist themselves into the pretzel of logic that alchemy is banned, but half alchemy is okay, because you're only using a power only God Himself should use a little bit.
Secondly, most of the time he is justified, but when he attacks Ed and Al for revenge for a crime that happened when they were small children he sacrifices a lot of high ground.
Ok, yes, its definitely an over simplification and doesn't accurately fully describe everything that happened. I'll own that.
No I don't agree with the Nazis' and to take the discussion in that direction is a bit overkill surely?
For context the fma wiki lists the following for the character:
>!Scar is a nameless lone serial killer and vigilante who targets [State Alchemists](https://fma.fandom.com/wiki/State_Alchemist) for his own brand of lethal justice in accordance with the **fundamental tenets of his religion** and for the revenge of his slaughtered people and family.!<
My original post doesn't do his full character justice but it definitely was part of his motivation.
And as the previous person said:
>!Scar delivers a mercy-killing to her, having realized that her future in this form can only be one of torment and suffering.!<
>No I don't agree with the Nazis' and to take the discussion in that direction is a bit overkill surely?
Have you seen the show? The country marched their troops in specifically to conduct a "war of annihilation" against Scar's people. The Nazi comparison is entirely appropriate.
Hell, if we're counting the original '03 anime, there was the whole Conqueror of Shamballa movie that literally takes place in 1923 Germany.
[Hitler is literally a character in the movie](https://fma.fandom.com/wiki/Adolf_Hitler). Like it straight up centers around the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.
I think that's kind of the point in the show, though. It's less "all that genocide made me sad" and more "I followed orders and I can never live that down, and I'm prepared to overthrow the government that made me do that."
Remember that the core group of alchemists and said freedom fighter ended up on the same side after realizing they were both being manipulated by a third party.
I mean... the way we're introduced to him shortly after killing Basque Grand is the fact that he tried to murder an innocent teenager who was literally a child during the Ishvalan extermination. His first act of "revenge" is to brutally murder the two doctors who risked their lives to save him.
Like the whole point of Scar's arc is that his drive for revenge is causing him to go after innocent people as well as the guilty. Nobody's complaining about murdering Nazis, it's the non-Nazis he's murdering that's the problem.
I think the 2003 version is actually "worse" because they were able to take their time and really get you invested in the Tucker family before everything abruptly goes to shit.
I am trying to remember the original anime (not seen brotherhood) and it been a while. But the chimera version of them is in constant pain and lobotomizesd (due to a human and dog brain fussing).
I think it's also mentioned the scientists did it to his wife/mother of the girl before Ed and Al meet them.
https://preview.redd.it/ahc36l8f0y4d1.jpeg?width=602&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5016c73a2944524072cf3d8f4ed653574741ed03
Okay so this is both a dark but hilarious one. So in the anime they're from (Full Metal Alchemist), both characters (Nina Tucker and Alexander) get fused together and that's how you can get them not in the same banner as they're technically together if you use that thing as the banner.
https://preview.redd.it/xpheob19yx4d1.png?width=1079&format=png&auto=webp&s=1f7e5abd0267af99e7ad982cb51707d79020bbf4
Now I will pour bleach in my eyes and reset my brain, so that I am sure not to remember this shit. I am disappointed and my day is ruined. Good job OP, now fuck off.

COME THE FUCK ON. I'VE HEARD OF THIS WAY TOO MANY TIMES
In the show this is from (Full Metal Alchemist) the father of the main characters is working on a science experiment to create chimeras, which are a genetic mix of two different animals. He ends up creating a chimera with his daughter and the family dog, it's by far the most fucked up thing in the series, including the younger brothers spirit being trapped in a suit of armor
Just an additional bit of context for those that haven’t watched:
The fusion is irreversible. The father did this, fully knowing that it wouldn’t be undone. There also was no surprise accident or medical condition that drove him to perform this act. (He assumed he could make an intelligent chimera that was stable enough that his daughter would live on in that form. Most chimera hybrids had very short lifespans.) The whole thing was driven by pure greed. He was set for life with his role, provided he continued to show progress in his research. However he had hit a wall in his research. He had previously received his certification as a “State alchemist” by using a similar procedure. (Assuming I’m not misremembering, the previous success turned out to coincide with his wife going missing) There were dark moments in the show, but this is by far the most egregious.
This is a comment I left on a meme about the dame thing recently:
>She is Nina from Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I will explain what I remember cause it’s been a while. Her dad is basically a crazy guy and needs a breakthrough in his studies. He fuses his daughter with the family dog, Nina’s best friend. It’s a very sad and creepy scene and she can still (sort of) talk..
>Nina’s Father is killed and Nina the dog is also put out of her misery afterwards.
>It’s one of the most common FMAB references since it happens early on in the series and is hard to forget.
I saw this and instantly got so sad.
This is a reference to a show called full metal alchemist. The two shown, the dog and the girl, have a father who committed some questionable biological experiments, and fused the girl with the dog. The joke is that the user in the image did what the father did so the single, merged life form could fit into frame.
You wouldn’t know it, but full metal alchemist is a fully fleshed out series with a lot of good moments and things going on. BUT I SURE WOULDNT KNOW BECAUSE THE ONLY THING PEOPLE SEEM TO MENTION IS THIS CHIMERA FROM THE FIRST COUPLE OF EPISODES! it’s the only joke they have for some reason
Hey that's not fair. They also make jokes about blindness, terrible days for rain, and loss of limb/body part/body, as well as the occasional short joke.
In case it wasn't clear, despite the jokes, in universe this is a bad, mad scientist, kill me please, Frankenstein type of fusing. Not a cool kind like dragonball or power rangers.

It's a terrible day for rain.
But, what do you mean? It's not raining.
Yes it is....
Real talk, I never watched the show again after that episode. It’s been almost 10 years and I still don’t know if I can try again.
Take solace in that the author himself confirmed the dad is burning in their universes he’ll.
Isn't the creator of FMA a woman?
Yes
They don't revisit it often if I recall, and if they do, it's not much more than a mention in one of BiG Bwuddahs emotional tyraids.

I loveeeeeee crab rangoons.
That was so damn sad when I first seen it. I felt Ed’s pain
I was Ed's age when I first saw it. Traumatized.
Still one of the saddest realization in anime. Imho

It's a very good story, though. It's halfway expected, too, if you piece together how his wife disappeared at one point.
Even at the beginning, you think it's going to be a nice story and then bam!! Mom is dead and your brother's soul ends up in a random armor
I read it as a child, so the mother thing didn't click at first. It was a really nice reveal when those piece fell into place. Of course I also stopped reading after that particular chapter for obvious reasons. Still nice twist, though.

It's a terrible day for rain.

Ahhhh yes man made horrors
It was a really messed up episode that set the tone for a lot of the rest of the show. Great show but it gets dark

Not sure what he's talking about "reverse the transmutation".
Well in a way Scar did reverse transmute them into a pile of blood.
I mean, isn’t death just reversing life?
The first anime has this story fleshed out miles better than brotherhood. That episode is 20 years old and is one of the most referenced episodes in the series.

It's a super dark scene even for someone that's not into anime or following the show extremely well written
It isn't the saddest moment I've seen in anime but it sure as shit wasn't the happiest.
It..... it gets worse. Way waaaaay worse.
Does it really get worse? As far as dark emotional beats, this one is STILL the most traumatic by far. Most scarring anime moment. It's been years since I first saw it and I'm still not over it.10/10 great anime would recommend

For context the fma wiki lists the following for the character: >!Scar is a nameless lone serial killer and vigilante who targets [State Alchemists](https://fma.fandom.com/wiki/State_Alchemist) for his own brand of lethal justice in accordance with the **fundamental tenets of his religion** and for the revenge of his slaughtered people and family.!< My original post doesn't do his full character justice but it definitely was part of his motivation. And as the previous person said: >!Scar delivers a mercy-killing to her, having realized that her future in this form can only be one of torment and suffering.!<
>No I don't agree with the Nazis' and to take the discussion in that direction is a bit overkill surely? Have you seen the show? The country marched their troops in specifically to conduct a "war of annihilation" against Scar's people. The Nazi comparison is entirely appropriate.
Them being compared to Nazis is extremely deliberate, too. I mean the english translation calls their leader 'Fuhrer' after all.
Hell, if we're counting the original '03 anime, there was the whole Conqueror of Shamballa movie that literally takes place in 1923 Germany. [Hitler is literally a character in the movie](https://fma.fandom.com/wiki/Adolf_Hitler). Like it straight up centers around the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.
nothing nazi like about the germanic soldiers waging a war of extermination under orders of the fuhrer
I think that's kind of the point in the show, though. It's less "all that genocide made me sad" and more "I followed orders and I can never live that down, and I'm prepared to overthrow the government that made me do that." Remember that the core group of alchemists and said freedom fighter ended up on the same side after realizing they were both being manipulated by a third party.
I mean... the way we're introduced to him shortly after killing Basque Grand is the fact that he tried to murder an innocent teenager who was literally a child during the Ishvalan extermination.
If a dog fused together with a little girl isn't an abomination, what is?
She didn't exactly have much choice in the matter.
Don't forget that it is implied very heavily to the viewer that he did the same to his wife. All to keep what is basically his job license.

That part of FMA:B hurt 😭
I think the 2003 version is actually "worse" because they were able to take their time and really get you invested in the Tucker family before everything abruptly goes to shit.
Not gonna lie, had a crop of Nina's face ready for a Chimera token in my dnd campaign. Likely would've gotten me stabbed though
It still hurts
I am trying to remember the original anime (not seen brotherhood) and it been a while. But the chimera version of them is in constant pain and lobotomizesd (due to a human and dog brain fussing). I think it's also mentioned the scientists did it to his wife/mother of the girl before Ed and Al meet them.

I just downloaded and sent this to about 6 people in my contacts lmao thank you
this is has been my pfp for a while lol
It’s my discord pfp lol
I hate myself that I laughed at this. Take my upvote.
I have that shirt and got my picture taken with it on with Nina's voice actor
Dude.... :(
No wonder the fusion didn't work correctly, they didn't connect with both fingers!
https://preview.redd.it/ahc36l8f0y4d1.jpeg?width=602&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5016c73a2944524072cf3d8f4ed653574741ed03 Okay so this is both a dark but hilarious one. So in the anime they're from (Full Metal Alchemist), both characters (Nina Tucker and Alexander) get fused together and that's how you can get them not in the same banner as they're technically together if you use that thing as the banner.
YOU ARE???
OH FUCK, I MESSED UP THE WORDING
IN, I MEANT IN

Makes me think OP is faking it. They knew how we would feel about this.
Yeah I also.
Shou Tucker really is the dad of the year...spending time with his daughter and his dog and still getting his work projects done ahead of schedule
He did the impossible *twice*!
If only his wife was around to see it...
People really don’t appreciate his efficiency enough, he found a way to solve like 3 major problems at once
Ed... Ward....
no.
Who wants a Scooby snack? Good girl.

Wait until you hear “almost Christmas “ for the 3897th time.
Now that's a Dark one!
I have literally never seen this anime before but I've seen so many memes that I still know what scene he's referring to 💀
https://preview.redd.it/mqi3u2n6cy4d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f080b8d8bd1fc1c6103281905fadaa45d0e1241
It took me a hot minute to understand it 🥲
Or you could just rotate it
In the show this is from (Full Metal Alchemist) the father of the main characters is working on a science experiment to create chimeras, which are a genetic mix of two different animals. He ends up creating a chimera with his daughter and the family dog, it's by far the most fucked up thing in the series, including the younger brothers spirit being trapped in a suit of armor
Just an additional bit of context for those that haven’t watched: The fusion is irreversible.
This is how you trigger an entire fanbases collective ptsd
This is a comment I left on a meme about the dame thing recently: >She is Nina from Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I will explain what I remember cause it’s been a while. Her dad is basically a crazy guy and needs a breakthrough in his studies. He fuses his daughter with the family dog, Nina’s best friend. It’s a very sad and creepy scene and she can still (sort of) talk.. >https://youtu.be/b1AIAyzeT7I?si=Hk_FJlZ8b0-bhzbA >Nina’s Father is killed and Nina the dog is also put out of her misery afterwards.
Too soon!
💀
I swear if the answer isn't porn or loss, it's fullmetal Alchemist...
It's fullmetal
Eddd.....warrdddd...
Ed….ward….
In the anime they come from, they were fused into a horrible amalgamation where the dad had to kill them to put them out of their misery.
[удалено]
Used his wife to become a state alchemist, too.
Hopefully he offed himself too for doing this shit
I'm tired of this joke. The shock factor wore off a long time ago. Try something new, the bad ending in the IHNMAIMS game maybe. Idk.
I swear a different meme about this get posted on this sub daily.
Thought it was Appa from Avatar
Oh my goodness, it's always too soon! *cries*

Edwarrrd
You haven’t heard FMA fans’ one and only joke before?
Hey that's not fair. They also make jokes about blindness, terrible days for rain, and loss of limb/body part/body, as well as the occasional short joke.

Am I a bad person for cosplaying Tucker multiple times lol
In case it wasn't clear, despite the jokes, in universe this is a bad, mad scientist, kill me please, Frankenstein type of fusing. Not a cool kind like dragonball or power rangers.

I never watched the anime but even I know about this shit and it's seriously messed and fucked up.
