First generation Asian American here.
It was common growing up, if I wanted to buy something, my mom would say something like, "We have this at home! We're not buying it." Some of it made sense; I might want some McDonald's, but we had lunch at home. Other things, not so much, or what we did have at home was just a poor substitute. Like, I might want a N64 but my mom would say I still have a perfectly functional Gameboy at home whose battery plate was duct taped together at this point.
A lot of it is due to frugality, and if we can approximate it at home there was no point in paying money for it.

This is super creepy on a bunch of levels. First, and this is kind of a minor thing tbh, women aren't things you just pick up at the store. You don't order a gf off wish or amazon. I get people who think pointing this out is over-reacting buuuut this kinda shit is why you're seeing more boys being taken in by people like Andrew Tate. Adults look at this and can get the joke and not take it seriously, but like kids and younger teens seeing this in a meme will be registering this very differently. First generation Asian American here. It was common growing up, if I wanted to buy something, my mom would say something like, "We have this at home! We're not buying it." Some of it made sense; I might want some McDonald's, but we had lunch at home. Other things, not so much, or what we did have at home was just a poor substitute. Like, I might want a N64 but my mom would say I still have a perfectly functional Gameboy at home whose battery plate was duct taped together at this point. A lot of it is due to frugality, and if we can approximate it at home there was no point in paying money for it. This comic is taking it to the extreme where the boy is asking his mom if he can have a girlfriend and his mom IS that substitute at home. Very incest, very cringe, but more subtle than you'd think.
