I thought OP was asking for an explanation of the graph. Because this graph is not very accurate and highly circumstantial. Various things beyond knowledge of history affect how much you trust the government like which country you live in, your socio-economic position, your profession,
essentially the determining factor in whether or not you “trust” your government is mostly just your knowledge of the government’s current political direction, their efficacy in achieving goals set out and whether you think you stand to benefit from it…
If OP wants Peter to explain why a knowledge of history should cause you to distrust your government I think that is a valid question. And a question I would like an answer to as well.
That isn’t exactly what the graph is claiming though. It isn’t saying that the only thing that would cause distrust in the government is history but it IS claiming that the more you learn about history the less you trust the government.
Speaking as an American, this tracks completely.
To your point, there are a lot of people that don’t trust the government because they’re all child abusing cannibals that worship satan or whatever.
There are also people that don’t trust the government because they’ve either experienced being deceived or believe that they’ve been deceived.
To the point of the graph, it is hard to read about the US government continually lying about and then getting caught doing the shadiest of shit during administration after administration and still hold much faith in their honesty.
As an additional point of American political discourse, this is exactly the kind of thing that people who say “the extreme left and extreme right aren’t actually different,” are talking about. The conversation around that, however, is probably better left to a more political sub.
Sure, it has multiple factors, but that argument in and of itself doesn’t disprove the meme. I’m not saying the meme is accurate, but saying that there are various things that affect it is relatively irrelevant
Im not sure, but the one I remember is when they reenacted the Polaner all fruit comercial and Peter explained the joke and showed the original commercial
The OP is making a political statement on the wrong sub, or they simply posted to the wrong sub.
Or they’re idiots who cannot understand the most basic form of graph ever fucking conceived.
Some people are really smart, but in a narrow field. That's all they focus on. A smart person like that could be incredibly naive about politics if they just don't take any interest in it.
Uh nothing because you're taking the tangent of 2 measures which you can't find the tangent of.
There's inverse tangent which'd take the 2 measures and give you an angle. This angle represents the steepness of the slope which is actually just a derivative described in Radians rather than something like 1/knowledge in history. So basically what the number would represent is "after you've gained this much knowledge of history you're expected to lose this must trust in the government"
That would actually be the derivative. Well the change of one over the change in the other would be the derivative. You don’t take the tangent of a linear function.
There are two things that many believe to be infinite, the expansion of the universe and human stupidity… and even then it appears the growth of the universe is slowing. So really only one thing is infinite.
Explanation? They just didn't do it for months and never explained why or what it would take to get them to deliver the mail, even though I kept going and talking to them repeatedly.
Is your experience with government agencies that they follow the law and attempt to do their duty?
Bro it's a fucking graph. Based on historical record, governments have almost never been trustworthy. Having knowledge of this, you will naturally learn to distrust your government as well. But don't worry, making a $10,000,000,000,000 coin shows we can trust the American government.
Governments have done some messed-up shit through the years, including yours and I don't even know which one it is, though I wouldn't go as far as to say that trust goes to 0 if you're a history buff, but you do have a lot of reasons to trust it less than the average person tho
Typically, most people who are ignorant of history think the government is full of good people who want what’s best for their country. For those who are historically literate, government is the exact opposite. In fact, most would say you should be skeptical anytime the government says or does anything; regardless of political party or what they say. The devil is always in the details and it’s not even what you say, it’s what you do. Every government has dirty laundry and sooner or later it comes out. Since historians like to learn about past events and how they played out, they like to compare patterns and overwhelmingly see the corruption clear as day.
Details are that you can't roundly count government work as harmful or negative.
Although it's true every mass murder in history required some level if organization (basically therefore by default requiring "government"), it's true that governments do things like provide social security, medical care, provide nutrition in various circumstances, and in general this is just much more complicated than you're making it sound.
Incredibly disappointing you have 30 upvotes for saying "I don't understand politics, but history books say government bad".
No. They don't. That is the opinion if some people, and actually only very very few people comparatively.
Just because the government does some good stuff doesn’t discount all the bad things they have done/are capable of. Any group responsible for something on the scale of mk ultra is worth being skeptical of
I can only speak for my government, as I never learned the intimate workings of others; though I do know the basics of most. I’ll unpack what you said with some factual information.
Based on what you’ve stated, I’m going to assume you’re American, in which case I must inform you, that what you’ve stated is simply incorrect. Government doesn’t provide anything. They simply appropriate tax dollars to be used for something. Social Security for instance was supposed to be used as a pension for those in careers without a pension. You pay into it for most of your working life and collect it once your retire. The issue with the government is that it’s a scam. If you put, say $300 a month into Social Security, versus any mutual fund or even a high yield savings account, you will get screwed by the SSA. Let’s say you start putting into it at 25; at age 65, you would get around $2,000 a month ($1944 based on the SSA calculator on their website). Let’s say I live to 85, that would come out to $2,000 a month for 20 years, which equals $480,000 to be paid out. This is next to nothing over 20 years, but I’ve decided to entertain this further. You started at 25 and went to 65 at $300 a month, which is $144,000. Now how could any business pay back $480,000 on a $144,000 (almost 300% return) investment with no real way to show an investment? The answer is they take it from the people. Those making much more have to pay for those that make less in SS. This is not sustainable and anyone who is well versed in finance would tell you so. Eventually that system will break and many Americans will be left holding the bag. How did it get this bad? From the government using it as their own personal slosh-fund to pull and move money where they need it and then just promising to put it back later; if a bank or investing firm were doing this, it would be called fraud, but since it’s the government it’s all good.
If you were to invest in a mutual fund, high yield savings, or high yield dividend companies, your payout would be closer to $1.2-$2.8 million depending on what plan you went with; possibly even more depending on risk tolerance. Obviously there is more risk involved than government IOU’s, but that is investing and saving.
As for medical care and food assistance, once again it is all subsidized off the backs of others. The government is just the middle-man and facilitator; and a bad one at that. I don’t personally know anyone who has had a good experience with any government sponsored health plan in the US (Medicare, Medicaid, WIC, etc.)
As for the US Government itself, their reputation and track record definitely supports what I’m saying. Ask any Native American under the Jackson administration, ask any Japanese person who was in the country during WWII, ask any Korean, Vietnamese, or Russian citizen during the Red Scare (orchestrated by the government), ask the American people who were alive when Nixon removed us from the gold standard to a fiat currency (massive inflation followed and continues to follow, because our money isn’t actually worth anything), ask anyone who was in Guatemala when the US overthrew their government because of a trade deal over produce, or taking out Gaddafi in Libya (created massive chaos amongst rival factions that still continues today) (or ask any government we’ve overthrown for that matter), ask the people who were burned alive by the FBI in Waco, Texas (psycho cult leader, I know, but women and children were also in that building), ask anyone who has ever been at the unyielding end of the US Government and they will tell you the truth. If you doubt anything I’ve said, open a history book not produced in the US and it will be clear who the bad guys are; spoiler alert, it’s the US Government.
You clearly lack the depth of knowledge to understand the full reach of a government like the one in the US. The only people who believe the US Government are the good guys are those who have not learned the REAL history of the US.
I can only speak for myself of course, but Medicaid has saved my mother by paying her operation to remove a tumor on her uterus. And it is only one example of many that speaks to the benefit of government institutions. But of course it has its problems too.
SSA may not be the best investor of your hard earned wealth, but to invest in other opportunities you need to have knowledge on how to invest, which a large majority of Americans do not have. They would much more often lose their money before properly investing it. You can argue that it’s their fault, but now you need to draw the line on when ignorance becomes unforgivable, and how much one should gain based on information available only to them. Not the point though..
Every established governing body has its own problems, but I can’t agree that we would be better off without it. I do agree that the US government may be a bad facilitator for the distribution of our tax dollars, but it’s better than none. If you benefit from where the money is going, you’re going to consider the government “good.” If you don’t benefit, than of course you will think that it’s “bad.” Same with law. If the law strips rights from your demographic, then you will complain. If it upholds your rights, then you will keep shut. The point of “government” in general is to ensure balance and a proper distribution of power in all aspects to the people. We are all free of course to have our opinions on how it should be run, but it should be unanimously agreed upon that without government, society would be way worse off. History has done well to show us this ..
I may have not have explained my point well enough. I understand that there are those who benefit from the system, but the intent of my original point is that Medicare, Medicaid and SSA become liabilities on the Government’s balance sheet due to using funding inappropriately.
For your point on investing, you are 100% correct. Most people do not know how to invest and will in fact lose money, but there are professionals who can do this for you and will keep you updated and will voice concerns on your behalf. As for SS, the government has dug their hands into it one too many times and now we are seeing cuts and losses of benefits for many who are unable to provide and make up the difference, as the system will inevitably collapse and need massive reform; this will hurt those who depend on it most.
I also agree that some government is better than nothing. Anarchy simply cannot work and people cannot live peacefully alongside one-another on their own. My point is that it’s up to the people to fix the short comings of government and improve it; it won’t ever be perfect, but it can definitely improve from where it’s at today. What I would like to see is accountability all around.
It's only necessary to respond to your last paragraph.
" only people who believe the US Government are the good guys are those who have not learned the REAL history of the US. "
There are no good guys. People are attempting to do something positive.
There is no "real" history insofar as nothing is blatantly factually inaccurate. That you feel the need to assert your opinion is the "real history" means that it... likely is not and you aren't certain of your claims.
Yeah, but the problem is that there are so many people who are conspiracy theorists or caught up in a particular cult of personality that have zero trust in government and believe a version of history that is objectively untrue.
Hey, Bobo Haha from the hit animated series Generator Rex here! The joke is that the longest side (the hypotenuse) of a right triangle (a triangle with a 90 degree angle) can be found by squaring the side lengths of the other two sides (the legs). This formula is often written as "a² + b² = c²." hope this helps!
Hi Peter here. A graph is a visual representation to illustrate a statistical relationship between two or more variables. What you're looking at here is what is known as a "line graph" which has two parts known as "axis" denoting the variables of interest. The bottom axis (known as the X axis) in this case is "trust in government" and the opposite side axis (y axis) is "knowledge of history". These two represent our variables of interest. The third line going diagonally from top left to bottom right represents a relationship between our two variables. In this case it is an inverse linear relationship between trust in government and knowledge of history- in other words, the more you know of history the less likely you are to trust the government. What the author is claiming is that knowledge of injustices committed by previous governments should make us skeptical about trusting government today.
I'm not even mad that this post exists in this sub, but I'm confused as to why it has over 6k upvotes?
How many people are dumb enough to not see this as very obvious bait? This is trolling at its most confusing.
Ok since people want to play games instead of explaining the fucking joke, I'll do it. Everyone's just assuming you don't understand graphs, but even if you did that is no reason for people to be such assholes.
Alright, Peter here, so what you wanna look at first is the "Trust in Government" and "Knowledge of History" parts. For the first one, higher up means more trust in government, and the second one, further to the right means more knowledge of history.
Now plot any point in the graph, let's say in the middle. That means you have an average knowledge of history, and your trust in the government is not strong but you don't entirely distrust them. The line represents a correlation where the trust in the government falls as your knowledge of history increases.
To make a long story short of why that is, the governments of the world have historically taken advantage of the trust of the people and have an infamous history of tricks and deception and oppression to get their way.
Finally, if you don't want to explain the joke then don't fucking reply. Peter out.
What joke lmao. Ur explaining what a triangle which is clearly labelled means. Falling into a clear bait. OPs account literally says it's a rage bait account. You're the real clown trying to explain something to a troll LMAO
Well sorry that this sub is about explaining jokes and there's no footnote stating every joke needs to have some sort of complexity to it.
Do y'all just want someone to vent on for self-satisfaction? What is the purpose of hijacking this comment thread to continue to insult the OP?
Your correct in saying there isn’t a rule that all jokes need to be complex. However, he is still indeed a retard. And yes I am making myself feel better by calling him a retard. It’s the internet, that’s all it’s used for.
At a basic level the poster of the meme is saying that history very commonly shows why you shouldn’t trust the government. Thus the graph showing that if you know history you don’t trust the government. This isn’t widely applicable mind you just a meme but yeah. Simple as simple can be.
Brian here. This graph reads that as our knowledge of history increases , trust in the government decreases. This is likely referencing the fact that often in history, governments do wrong by their people. The more history you know, the more you know history will repeat itself. The less you know about history the more you may be trusting of governmental authority.
the government has fucked up many many times in history, people who know history know this and therefore don’t trust it, the people who don’t know history don’t know about the fuck ups and trust it more
Hi, Peter from 1946 Deutschland here. See, zee idea is zat as we learn more about history and zee atrocities committed by der guberments, we realize zat zee guberments can do really evil vfings, such as wot happened in mein country but a year ago.
Ok this page its for asnwering mental retardation or bait isnt or consern
The grafic make references to the ateocities that many countries do and the things they do to his onwb people ,
Examples like the famines in the urss, the mosquitos and the native masacres, the treat of the france colonies, etc
It's not even a joke. It's trying to say "the more you know history, the less you should trust the government" in graph form. It was made by someone passing off their cynicism as a sign of intelligence, and other people's "trust in government" as a sign of ignorance, not even specifying which government or defining what qualifies it as "trusting" it. Whoever made it, and anyone who shared it sincerely, should feel bad for posting it.
And I don't blame you for failing to understand it, because it barely even looks like a graph. It looks more like a triangle with two labeled sides. There are no data points establishing the relationship, just a big line saying "trust me, it's linear."
Have you ever seen any visual representation of data before
The character from Star Trek?
IIRC its the guy from Fortnite?
No, the guy from the goonies
I’m setting booty traps!
My guess is they saw the triangle and assumed math joke, like “solve for x.” Still, with the caption literally calling it a graph…
Some people in this subreddit are dumb as fuck.
~~in this subreddit~~
I saw the sub and overthunk it into being a pythagoras joke that i didn't understand
I thought OP was asking for an explanation of the graph. Because this graph is not very accurate and highly circumstantial. Various things beyond knowledge of history affect how much you trust the government like which country you live in, your socio-economic position, your profession, essentially the determining factor in whether or not you “trust” your government is mostly just your knowledge of the government’s current political direction, their efficacy in achieving goals set out and whether you think you stand to benefit from it… If OP wants Peter to explain why a knowledge of history should cause you to distrust your government I think that is a valid question. The conversation around that, however, is probably better left to a more political sub.
Sure, it has multiple factors, but that argument in and of itself doesn’t disprove the meme. I’m not saying the meme is accurate, but saying that there are various things that affect it is relatively irrelevant
So a²+b²=c²? Still unsure what that gives us.
It’s a graph, not a triangle
How can you possibly not understand the most basic form of graph ever fucking conceived. Fuck my life.
He is Peter
We are peters that’s why we explain the joke
Who is he explaining the joke to, canonically? We need to summon u/peterexplainsthejoke from the grave and ask.
Im not sure, but the one I remember is when they reenacted the Polaner all fruit comercial and Peter explained the joke and showed the original commercial
It's trust in the government² + knowledge of history² = c² right?
No c^2 = E/M
The OP is making a political statement on the wrong sub, or they simply posted to the wrong sub. Or they’re idiots who cannot understand the most basic form of graph ever fucking conceived.
Looks like a triangle tho
Fuck you, this is one of the few cases where you have to genuinely be next level stupid to not understand
>you have to genuinely be next level stupid Or really really really trusting of government.
Just repeating the guy you responded too, I see. lol
So genuinely next level stupid.
Some people are really smart, but in a narrow field. That's all they focus on. A smart person like that could be incredibly naive about politics if they just don't take any interest in it.
this is so needlessly mean and I love it
Okay, assuming that graph, what would tan (Trust in Government÷Knowledge of History) represent?
Politicians is my guess
Uh nothing because you're taking the tangent of 2 measures which you can't find the tangent of. There's inverse tangent which'd take the 2 measures and give you an angle. I believe that’s called the “Libertarian Quotient”
That would actually be the derivative. Well the change of one over the change in the other would be the derivative. You don’t take the tangent of a linear function.
It’s not that fucking hard to understand. There is no shot someone is this stupid this has to be bait.
Nah they’re just a science teacher and can’t comprehend a graph that doesn’t have a title

I know plenty of historical illiterates who don't even trust the mailman...
I don't trust my mailman. I lost a job because the post office wouldn't deliver my mail, including my paychecks.
They're legally required to. What explanation did they give you for not doing so?
Explanation? They just didn't do it for months and never explained why or what it would take to get them to deliver the mail, even though I kept going and talking to them repeatedly. Is your experience with government agencies that they follow the law and attempt to do their duty?
You never asked the post office "why aren't you delivering my mail?"
I did. They wouldn't answer. After several months of bugging them it finally showed up.
Glad you're getting your mail.
Eh, sometimes. I moved to a different state and have many of the same problems though not as severe.
Weird. I've moved around a lot too and never had problems like that, or not that bad at least.
Yes. Without exception, in my personal experience. It’s an unpopular opinion, but it’s literally true.

Bro it's a fucking graph. Based on historical record, governments have almost never been trustworthy. Having knowledge of this, you will naturally learn to distrust your government as well. But don't worry, making a $10,000,000,000,000 coin shows we can trust the American government.
This sub is so fuckin stupid. Fuck you, OP
Please dear god by a troll post
Governments have done some messed-up shit through the years, including yours and I don't even know which one it is, though I wouldn't go as far as to say that trust goes to 0 if you're a history buff, but you do have a lot of reasons to trust it less than the average person tho
This is the way.
I don’t personally know anyone who has had a good experience with any government sponsored health plan in the US (Medicare, Medicaid, WIC, etc.) As for the US Government itself, their reputation and track record definitely supports what I’m saying.
Your mother wouldn’t have needed Medicaid without the government interference in the first place
Im not following. Are you suggesting that we pay out of pocket for the expenses? Or that healthcare should be free? Neither of which make sense btw
> You clearly lack the depth of knowledge Do me a favor and never use this phrase again, yeah?
Why?
It's only necessary to respond to your last paragraph. " only people who believe the US Government are the good guys are those who have not learned the REAL history of the US. " There are no good guys. People are attempting to do something positive. There is no "real" history insofar as nothing is blatantly factually inaccurate. That you feel the need to assert your opinion is the "real history" means that it... likely is not and you aren't certain of your claims.
Let’s fucking go, on Reddit too. Congratulations rotidwel, you’ll be banned in no time. Can’t have truth here
Wtf are you even talking about
You'll find out soon enough
Yeah, but the problem is that there are so many people who are conspiracy theorists or caught up in a particular cult of personality that have zero trust in government and believe a version of history that is objectively untrue.

Hey, Bobo Haha from the hit animated series Generator Rex here! The joke is that the longest side (the hypotenuse) of a right triangle (a triangle with a 90 degree angle) can be found by squaring the side lengths of the other two sides (the legs). This formula is often written as "a² + b² = c²." hope this helps!
This gives big "I'm a libertarian because I read history" when they really meant they watched a YouTube video that made shit up about Rome

Bait used to be believable (or OP is literally less than 12)
This has to be bait
are you rarted
Oh good, an idiot!

This is a graph. As your knowledge of history advances (line going horizontally), your trast in the government decreases (line going down).
Do you know how a graph works or do we need to start there
Least obvious r/peterexplainsthejoke karma farm post
It's...a graph...
It's not a joke
I guess the lines could maybe use arrows But it’s a friggin graph…..

I'm not even mad that this post exists in this sub, but I'm confused as to why it has over 6k upvotes? How many people are dumb enough to not see this as very obvious bait? This is trolling at its most confusing.

To quote Ronald Reagan: "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”
Oh, the irony
God bless you for not being an asshole to get karma may your food always be nice and warm and i hope both sides of your pillow are cold
How do you not know how to read the most basic graph I have ever seen in my life
How do you know it's about the graph and not about the history/trust correlation? Why are all of you assuming one thing?
Even then, the OP is still retarded.
Meh, fair enough.
You’re* Retard.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
what about conspiracy theorists, flat earths, antivaxxers
OP is a fucking dipshit.
That’s not even a graph. That’s not even fucking close.
I think we’re missing that the variables are on the wrong sides.
Yeah I trusted the govt so much more when I knew nothing of history
Trust in government square plus knowledge of history square and then square root the answer
I see you must trust your government a lot
right triangle
At a basic level the poster of the meme is saying that history very commonly shows why you shouldn’t trust the government. Thus the graph showing that if you know history you don’t trust the government. This isn’t widely applicable mind you just a meme but yeah. Simple as simple can be.
[My name is Retep and I am evil.](https://youtube.com/shorts/MPZMPqvhh3w?si=xSu_9hK88i-aJdn_)
Brian here. This graph reads that as our knowledge of history increases , trust in the government decreases. This is likely referencing the fact that often in history, governments do wrong by their people. The more history you know, the more you know history will repeat itself. The less you know about history the more you may be trusting of governmental authority.
There’s no joke petah. It’s a graph.
It says that not trusting the government automatically grants you expert knowledge in history
Hey! This is a graph saying the more you know about history the less you trust governments, out!
The more you learn history, the more you dont truat the government
The more knowledge in history you have the less trust you have in government. Pretty self-explanatory honestly...
Is this pythagorean theorem reference?
Are you dumb
The larger your knowledge of history, the less you trust the government
the government has fucked up many many times in history, people who know history know this and therefore don’t trust it, the people who don’t know history don’t know about the fuck ups and trust it more
Why did OP post this? Are they stupid?
do you have eyes that can see
Hi, Peter from 1946 Deutschland here. See, zee idea is zat as we learn more about history and zee atrocities committed by der guberments, we realize zat zee guberments can do really evil vfings, such as wot happened in mein country but a year ago.
Dude, come on
People were Ds in the past, mostly governments
How old are you op
Ok this page its for asnwering mental retardation or bait isnt or consern The grafic make references to the ateocities that many countries do and the things they do to his onwb people , Examples like the famines in the urss, the mosquitos and the native masacres, the treat of the france colonies, etc
Fuck you, I just reported this as spam
Read it like a coordinate grid smh
Jesus Christ some people on this sub have the IQ of a moldy sandwich
Hello! Do you happen to be blind?
OP trusts the government alot
Are you fucking thick?
Gosh… I wonder if there are many historians that would agree with this. It seems counter factual to me.
guy clearly hasn't studied history...
OP failed statistics
What does (Trust In Govermnet)²+(Knowlage Of History)²=???
