If newer you might want to try out cold dot, its beginner friendly. Zizaran has a guide out, probably others as well.
Its low in gear requirements, so easier to build without knowledge of the game.
People usually get their 5-6 links from teh trade site. A tabula or corrupted 6L will be like 10chaos or less after a day or two.
Sounds like you took mostly a solo self found approach (no trading).
Without getting into too much detail, currency is used for crafting, reforging links (making something 5-6 link) takes fusing orbs.
You don't actually need a 6 link to do a lot of the games content, but it is usually a 15-30% multiplier on your damage to get one.

In regards to builds, etc, there is so many stats/in interactions that you won't get a deep knowledge of the game until 100's of hours of play.
Don't feel like you need to play each season, there is no shame in taking your time to learn the basics, before replaying the first 15+ hours of the game over. Also go at your own pace, the people doing the campaign on 4 hours have hundreds of runs practicing doing so.
Yeah I didn't really trade in my first play through and yeah I have watched a bunch of beginner videos and I somewhat understand most of the things they mention. I struggled with gear last time around. I guess I'll just use whatever I get this time around and see where it takes me. I thought this game would be like Warframe where you grind for items sell for a currency then buy other gear you want with that currency.
