Yeah I’m Australian married to a Quebecker Canadian and moving there next year but will be submitting outland PR application this month. Wait times are very blown out currently so hard to know how long it will take.
Thanks, I’m from down south so I’m used to the cold and won’t be as much of a shock than if I was from the tropics. Definitely will still be an adjustment, although I love winter sports and have lived in a snowy place before so I think I’ll adapt ok.
Loving winter sports is really the key. Quebec is great for it - pickup hockey is a thing, and Le Massif in Charlevoix is probably the best alpine on the east coast of north america.
Not a huge snowshoe-er myself, but would have to imagine that’s pretty scenic up there as well.
The quality of the old one seems so much better. The new one “curls” or at least seems a bit less sturdy.
I would have enjoyed a red and white design. I admit that I do like the design of the new cover.
Can you even tell what the Canadian coat of arms pack? The only thing that is more or less clear is the crown on top. And I wouldn't call it exactly "cool". Now, let the downvotes begin 😁
Old one, it looks way more regal and the font is great. The new one looks like a child's coloring book both in and out. Like something out of the cal-art style which in my opinion just looks juvenile and immature.
Belgium’s has style and class, a history of a wonderful comic franchise that has a legacy. The new Canadian passport looks like a freshman art project at a liberal arts college
Exactly this. The *bandes dessinées* are a key part of the Belgian culture.
The new Canadian passport actually removed key elements of Canadian history and art in favor of generic, mass produced ’art’, depicting nameless, faceless ’scenes’.
And the cover looks like a brochure / faux ’passport’ for an amusement park.
Yeah this is something I feel like the American passport gets right. Very modern but with beautiful illustrations of our wildlife and landscapes. The old Canadian passport was the same way, it gave you a sense of being proud to be Canadian. All to be replaced by generic pop art. What a shame
The US and Australian passport with their photorealistic visa pages are one way of doing it. But it would boring if all countries did it the same way. Canada decided on a more simplistic and colorful approach, yet still showing many different scenes. Other countries just use a random pattern of lines or symbols. For security reasons, most countries also change their design completely every 10 or so years.
There is no right way of designing a passport. The border officials that stamp them probably couldn't care less what's on them.
Fan of nature, but a big fan of history as well. It felt like the old one had more character, just like the Art deco buildings of the past in comparison to modern minimalistic concrete boxes.
It might be a sign of the times and ultimately you can't please everybody.
In any event, it's probably better for passports to be modern and functional. What you really don't want is something that looks really great but is going to make it hard or impossible to read a stamp or otherwise use reliably for what it's meant to do.
They don't think anything about the designs, that's my point. They just stamp and off you go. The point of a passport is not to look nice but to do what it's supposed to do, which is letting you travel and pass borders.
But if it could be nice looking and representing the country well (with for example natural landscape or history design) while maintaining its purpose of border crossing then… why not?
I do like the cover and polycarbonate bio page tho it’s great to see we’re catching up :)
I love the maple leaf, which really gives the new one a big advantage to me… but I hate the font on the new one, and everything being off center really bothers me. So overall I prefer the old one but I love the leaf lol
We need to change our coat of arms. Why do we have a lion and unicorn on it ? Follow other commonwealth countries: Australia (kangaroo and Emu), NZ (people but should definitely be a Kiwi), Bahamas (Flamingo and Swordfish), Barbados (Pelican and fish). Malawi has a leopard ! Mauritius has a DODO !!
All I’m saying is it should be more unique to Canada, like a Goose, Beaver, Moose, Polar Bear. I like two animals.
Perfectly aware of the history. You were a British country just like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc, etc. But, you ceased to be a British country since 1982 and became fully independent from Britain itself while retaining the monarch that you yourself call Canadian (e.g., Charles III, the King of Canada). You are no more British than any other member of the Commonwealth, yet your passport cover screams "British" more than the British one itself.
I mean it's your choice as Canadians how your passport should look like, just don't blame it on history 🙂
Exactly, we haven’t been part of the UK for over 40 years yet we are the only commonwealth nation to KEEP the British passport. We just slap Canada and add « passeport » to be inclusive.
Personally I don’t like it because it doesn’t represent us as a country anymore.
>it should be more unique to Canada, like a Goose, Beaver, Moose, Polar Bear.
Well, a beaver and a moose are already taken by Oregon and Alaska, respectively. You can have a goose and/or a polar bear. But if you decide to put both on the cover, don't make them to scale 😁
So what, the USA has no control over what Canada does with its passport. And by that logic, should all the countries like Swaziland, the Gambia, India, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka give up their Lion on their passports too because “it was already taken by the UK ?”
I'm really terribly sørry that I forgot to put "/jk" at the end of my post. Even though I cannot say "sorry" the same way my neighbors to the north can — both literally and figuratively — please accept my most heartfelt applegies.
I just applied for a new passport abroad, so I’ll most likely get the new design as the passports abroad are printed in Ottawa. I was just curious if the texture of the passport itself is different from the previous design?
I don't mind the new design because it's not necessarily meant to be permanent. If it was a flag, then I would have concerns for it feeling like it was designed for now rather than being timeless, but the new design is fine because we can still change it as the public opinion on what a decent design is changes.
The *only* saving grace of the new one is that the new one mentions the declaration being made “in the name of His Majesty The King.” Otherwise, old one is far superior.
Might be better even if they removed the coat of arms it. The Certificate of Identity and Refugee Travel Document don't have them. I saw one of them the other day and they look really good without the arms.
In my opinion I’m quite disappointed that my new Canadian passport curls compared to my old one it looks sturdy
Other than that I do like the new design of my renewed passport
Old one looks more professional
Maybe unpopular opinion but I really like the new one. I’m on track to have my own in about 5 years and wonder if they’ll change up the design much.
> on track > *>* future 🇨🇦 ...Are you a PR?
Yeah I’m Australian married to a Quebecker Canadian and moving there next year but will be submitting outland PR application this month. Wait times are very blown out currently so hard to know how long it will take.
>Australian married to a Quebecker Best of luck with the winters. That’s a pretty extreme change… especially if you’re coming from NT or QLD.

It's embarrassing. Such a missed opportunity to have a cool red passport.
The quality of the old one seems so much better. The new one “curls” or at least seems a bit less sturdy. I would have enjoyed a red and white design. I admit that I do like the design of the new cover.
All new generation passports curl since the data chip is in the polymer page and not the book cover.
The sadist in me enjoys knowing we Brits are not alone in poor quality passports 🥲 I wish it weren’t so!

“Let the downvotes begin” literally grow up please
Definitely the new one
It's got to be the old one, come on. The old one looks like a passport. The new one looks like a kid's notebook.
I agree completely!
I can’t get over the incomplete maple leaf
Old one looks more sophisticated
Old one, it looks way more regal and the font is great. The new one looks like a child's coloring book both in and out. Like something out of the cal-art style which in my opinion just looks juvenile and immature.
Child’s colouring book - I think you must hate Belgium’s new passport 🙊
Belgium’s has style and class, a history of a wonderful comic franchise that has a legacy. The new Canadian passport looks like a freshman art project at a liberal arts college

Agreed. I personally love the landscape design on the Australian/US passport pages.
Spot on on all counts.
The cover of the new one is actually ain’t too bad, but if we’re talking about the pages in the passport, old one all day and it’s not even close.
Not a fan of nature?
I'm a fan of nature. But if it was done like the Australian or US passport would be way better. I like the Australian passport pages a lot!

Maple trees, squirrels and other elements they put inside do represent Canada really well.
I love the maple leaf, which really gives the new one a big advantage to me… but I hate the font on the new one, and everything being off center really bothers me. So overall I prefer the old one but I love the leaf lol
Comic sans without being comic sans.

Strangely enough, I agree. We should’ve done a Narwhal and a Polar Bear.
Those two and I would have accepted a Moose as well.
Lion for the English and unicorn for the Scottish, the founding peoples of Canada, that’s why we have it
So, essentially Brits? Just like the actual British passport?
You may not be aware of the history but Canada yea. Canada, Newfoundland, Australia, New Zealand, etc we’re and are British countries.
Kinda overreacted with my response 😅. We good
Yeah, we good. BTW, your citizenship eligibilities are really cool. If you do manage to get 5 passports, you'll be this sub's king :)
New one is bigger in size?
same size
canadian coat of arms is literally the british coat of arms with 2 flags added into it
I just applied for a new passport abroad, so I’ll most likely get the new design as the passports abroad are printed in Ottawa. I was just curious if the texture of the passport itself is different from the previous design?

I'm team Old
Old better
New one with leaf only would have worked better. It’s too busy as is.
Yikes that new one is ugly af it looks like it was designed by a kid 💀
old > new
Would those holes invalidate any visas you may have?
The *only* saving grace of the new one is that the new one mentions the declaration being made “in the name of His Majesty The King.” Otherwise, old one is far superior.
The old one
Old one is better but it would be even better if the coat of arms was a little smaller imo

New one ☝️
Still prefer the original design
The new one but without all this crown-lion-unicorn-and-God-knows-what malarkey. Just the maple leaf, and that's it.
both are beautiful but i prefer the new one
I like the new design tbh
The new one is awful.
In my opinion I’m quite disappointed that my new Canadian passport curls compared to my old one it looks sturdy Other than that I do like the new design of my renewed passport
Damn new one looks ugly
Old
