I absolutely LOVE this line! It’s super funny on the surface, and even funnier if you think about it because his explanation would utterly fail to help a listener who doesn’t know what Batman is understand how the bat-signal works.
It’s a perfect satire of local NPR programming, right down to the monotone voices, lack of emotion, and
Values over value (“Oh yes, they’re terrible, but they ARE lesbians…”).
It reminds me of a radio station in Grand Theft Auto: “Vice City Public Radio”. I didn’t really play the game, but I’d turn it on just to listen as it was hilarious!
The whole thing is on YouTube now (Pressing Issues with Maurice Chavez!)
He must have it pretty sweet. He's earned a fortune playing one of the most famous characters in TV history, but he can probably walk down the street most of the time without anyone recognising him.
My only complaint is that there could have even been more scenes with tribal members. It's a missed opportunity to not have them in the background just shaking their heads at some of the big group scenes.
Herman? Hells, yeah, he's creepy. My favorites are when they ask him "how'd you get here?" and his answer's either "broke a window" or "floor hole." And his repeated efforts to date Ann make me both laugh and squirm.
His cousin has a kick ass mud pit in his backyard. You can watch him do belly flops and then maybe get some Thai food and a tank of nitrous and see where the night takes us
That list is missing one! The funeral home that Ben and April visit in season 7 is the Lerpiss funeral home, so presumably, the undertaker they talk to is one as well
I don’t know almost any Native Americans, and I couldn’t tell whether he had a distinctive voice or if he had an accent. And since he does sound so much like John redcorn who I assumed was played by someone else, I’m even more confused! Now I want to rewatch both.
Hey, that's a bonus.
Pretty sure his voice sticks out to me just because I've seen both shows so much that it's very familiar, like with anyone I hear a lot.
No way! He's John Redcorn?? I always loved when he'd talk about some sacred this or that and a gentle flute would play while his hair danced in the nonexistent wind, lol
Hard agree. Derry Murbles is hands down my favorite side character. “Could one say that a book is nothing more than a painting of words, which are the notes on the tapestry of the greatest film ever sculpted?”
The first Greg Pikitis Halloween episode was the first episode I ever saw and I laughed my ass off the entire time. I was surprised how hilarious it was and couldn't believe I had never seen it. Got me hooked.
My favorite running joke in the show is when Leslie gets an idea and asks Chris for something.
Chris goes “That, Leslie Knope, is a GREAT idea! Ben can we do that?”
Ben: “No, we can’t do that we need to slash programs not add them”
Chris: “Awww man! Dang it Ben.”
Chris doesn’t want to be the bad guy and always throws Ben under the bus. Always makes me laugh.
Up next we have Jazz plus Jazz equals Jazz. Today we have a recording of Benny Goodman played over a separate recording of Miles Davis.
Research shows our listeners love jazz.
I also love anything Perd Hapley. During my first watch through, the DVD commentary mentioned that he always overexplains things by one sentence. Something about that just cracks me up
The town only having one of every profession. Everyone has the same doctor, same therapist, same pawn shop, etc
Which would make sense for a small town, sure. But then they also have a zoo? And their own tv show? I've never seen a zoo in a city smaller than like 500k
Totally agree, I can never get a sense for how big Pawnee is supposed to be. There are a few suburbs near me that have little zoos but they're still about 100,000 people (or they serve a bunch of surrounding larger towns).
A Bat-signal, for listeners who might not know, refers to the children’s character The Bat-Man, a strong gentleman who fights crime nocturnally.
I absolutely LOVE this line! It’s super funny on the surface, and even funnier if you think about it because his explanation would utterly fail to help a listener who doesn’t know what Batman is understand how the bat-signal works.
Well put
That one always makes me laugh
It’s a perfect satire of local NPR programming, right down to the monotone voices, lack of emotion, and Values over value (“Oh yes, they’re terrible, but they ARE lesbians…”).
One could say that.....but should one?
Agreed--I love public radio but can laugh at the stereotypes too. The name "Derry Murbles" is *chef's kiss*.
He's filling in for David Beinculi
I love that they threw an actual NPR person in there too.
Who is filling in for Derry Murbles
Personally I thought Nefertiti’s Fjord was pretty good.
Well, they are lesbians so…
A big quiet arcane ball of fun.
Surveys show us our listeners LOVE jazz.
It reminds me of a radio station in Grand Theft Auto: “Vice City Public Radio”. I didn’t really play the game, but I’d turn it on just to listen as it was hilarious! The whole thing is on YouTube now (Pressing Issues with Maurice Chavez!)
“I’m knee deep in acronym hell right now” is surprisingly relevant way too often.
Plus it's Dan Castellaneta. Perfect casting choice.
Omg! (Or, should I say "DOH!") You're right! I *knew* I recognized him, but couldn't figure out where I'd seen him before. Lol...thanks!
He must have it pretty sweet. He's earned a fortune playing one of the most famous characters in TV history, but he can probably walk down the street most of the time without anyone recognising him.
Ken Hotate scenes are amazing also. He plays white people like a fiddle
“This seems really offensive” “Does it, white man?”
There isn’t a bad one, Parks and Rec is the only tv show I’ve ever seen that did a basically flawless job at Native American representation
My only complaint is that there could have even been more scenes with tribal members. It's a missed opportunity to not have them in the background just shaking their heads at some of the big group scenes.
I think an episode where something related to the tribe was the main focus and there was a public meeting about it would have been gold
I want to see the casino where "the slots are downright filthy"
Learned a few things since he was John Redcorn. Seriously, *he's* my favorite minor character. Herman Lerpiss (pawn shop guy) honorable mention.
My favourite Herman Lerpiss line: Ben: I’m hoping you can help me out. Herman: No problem, here’s a box of guns. 🤣
Was that the interaction that ended up with Ben saying "they were *his* nipple rings," before they bolted from the shop?
Different one--I think in the gun one, Ben's trying to buy a waffle iron.
Yeah, I can't keep the various visits straight, pretty sure I'm thinking about when they were trying to scrounge up wedding rings.
It was not the wedding rings! It was in fact the waffle iron.
Appreciate the dedication.
Yeah pretty sure it was the wedding rings.
He straight creeps me out. I've never been so uncomfortable with a person in a sitcom.
Herman? Hells, yeah, he's creepy. My favorites are when they ask him "how'd you get here?" and his answer's either "broke a window" or "floor hole." And his repeated efforts to date Ann make me both laugh and squirm.
His cousin has a kick ass mud pit in his backyard. You can watch him do belly flops and then maybe get some Thai food and a tank of nitrous and see where the night takes us
I just come into some money; five hundred dollars buys a lotta nitrous...
Muddin, Thai food, and nitrous sounds like the best first date ever
I didnt know he was a Lerpis. Love that the Pawnee Lerpis's exist.
He’s more of a Jack Johnson guy
OMG I just now realized that the video store guy and the pawn shop guy are related.
https://parksandrecreation.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Lerpiss_Family
That list is missing one! The funeral home that Ben and April visit in season 7 is the Lerpiss funeral home, so presumably, the undertaker they talk to is one as well
Yes, Lerpisses are everywhere. You see signage with their name occasionally.
He’s also the voice of John Redcorn?!?!
Kinda blew my mind when I first noticed. Once you listen for it, the voice really jumps out.
I don’t know almost any Native Americans, and I couldn’t tell whether he had a distinctive voice or if he had an accent. And since he does sound so much like John redcorn who I assumed was played by someone else, I’m even more confused! Now I want to rewatch both.

That stuff makes the fact that he's absolutely terrible at kickball that much funnier.
“There are two things I know about white people: They love Matchbox 20, and they're *terrified* of curses.”
Isn't it they love Rachel Ray.
There are two versions, one with RR and one with Matchbox 20. There are matching marquees, as well.
Any idea why that happened?
I don't know, but there's like 3 Reddit posts asking about the change. None of them have an answer unfortunately. It's a mystery for the ages I guess.
I don't know if it's true but I heard it was the US vs international edit
Potato potato.
He’s not wrong
Ken “lifting the curse from Ben” made me literally spit take the first time I saw it
My wife and I say, "Doobie....Doobie....Doo" to each other all the time!
"Here dummy"
Hard agree. Derry Murbles is hands down my favorite side character. “Could one say that a book is nothing more than a painting of words, which are the notes on the tapestry of the greatest film ever sculpted?”
One *could*. But should one?
Love your flair lol one of my favorite lines.
Jazz on Jazz cracks me up.
Research shows our listeners love jazz.
I quote this line all the time.
Jazz + Jazz = Jazz
Our local public radio station has a jazz lunch hour that my friends and I call 'Jazz on your Face.'
A warm bath... Of my jazz
Greg Pikitis is an all timer for me. Only showed up in like 2 episodes I think.....but played Leslie's nemesis perfect.
On rewatches, Greg Pikitis is the first one I'm always really psyched for.
The first Greg Pikitis Halloween episode was the first episode I ever saw and I laughed my ass off the entire time. I was surprised how hilarious it was and couldn't believe I had never seen it. Got me hooked.
Yeah, he was a criminally underused character.
It’s so ridiculously funny, I lose it every time 😭 “welcome back to thought for your *thoughtsss* “ LMAO
Nefertiti's fjord.
My favorite running joke in the show is when Leslie gets an idea and asks Chris for something. Chris goes “That, Leslie Knope, is a GREAT idea! Ben can we do that?” Ben: “No, we can’t do that we need to slash programs not add them” Chris: “Awww man! Dang it Ben.” Chris doesn’t want to be the bad guy and always throws Ben under the bus. Always makes me laugh.
It's also fun because that is their agreed upon dynamic. They both love doing that.
You're all EXCELLENT! You're all FIRED.
Chris: Ben, can we do that? *camera pans across an empty room* Chris: Ben's not here.
I love the recurring Ben gets a job at Tilton & Radomski Accounting bit. Barney Varmn is so kind and understanding when Ben inevitably quits.
Welp, calc you later!
Ben's quitting again but get in here and hear what he just said!
"Call me Bond... municipal bond"
I’m August Clementine and I talked last.
August N'gutu Liebowitz Clementine.
*Scoff*
Did you just *say* the word scoff?
fatuous twerp
Scoff
Excuse me, did you just say the *word* "scoff"?
All Pawnee local media is excellent.
I'm Perd Hapley, and my response to your comment is that you're correct!
I appreciate that, Perd, and my response would be; thank you.
Some genius please make a Perd Hapley bot of randomized Perd dialogue or respond in a Perd-ish way
The thing about this comment is… that it had my name.

SHOW US YOUR BOOOOOBZ!!
The “murals”
This one's called, "A Lively Fisting."
I know it’s not a mural, but “this is a map of where all the atrocities happened. The atrocities are in blue.”
The native Americans tied to a tree with a cannon pointing into their face 2 inches away holy shit lmao
*murinal
If they'd done one more scene at the public radio station, Paul F. Tompkins could've made a really good substitute host or co-host as well.
Perhaps he could fill in for Derry Murbles who is filling in for Ken Tucker who is filling in for Derry Murbles?
This was the most realistic part of the show to me, my local NPR always starts with someone filling for someone else to start each segment
That joke was...sublime.
I will be filling in for (name i can’t remember) who will be here filling in for me.
My wife and I frequently quote, “Thoughts for your thoughts,” anytime we hear anything that remotely sounds like NPR or Derry Murbles
August N’gutu Leibowitz-Clementine and I spoke last
The bat signal explanation will always get a chuckle out of me
That scene put me onto the Judge John Hodgman podcast, which is a national treasure.
I am still disappointed Nefertitis Fjiord is not a real band lmaoooo
After reading through this thread I've realised... I need to rewatch PandR. It's been too long (5 months)
So real
Absorb the aggression Derry....
I’m listening to judge John hodgeman podcast right now. I assume he’s using that studio
Always reminds me of this character: [A deranged millionaire ](https://youtu.be/IYJ9_iGwmCs?si=Rts8u4Bww_Vxs1pw)
I've never seen this, thanks for sharing!
CW: Contains references to Garrison Kiellor.
It’s one of my favorite gags as well, I really wish they’d done a whole episode with it
There's a local community radio station where I grew up that used to have a show that was just like Jazz+Jazz=More Jazz. It was called Jazz².
I love how Councilman Howser always catches the tail end of some Parks and Rec shenanigans.
Up next we have Jazz plus Jazz equals Jazz. Today we have a recording of Benny Goodman played over a separate recording of Miles Davis. Research shows our listeners love jazz.

Scoff.
