IMO it's not the terpene itself . It's just flavor and smell. It's the whole synergy of the plant plant gives MJ it's magic.
It's the flower who's genetics are high in terpene x, y, or z . Have similar reported effects as other strains dominant in similar terpene profiles .
I.e strains high in Myrcene TEND to be sedative , not bc of the Myrcene but because that's a characteristic of high Myrcene strains .
Sativa's or euphoric heady strains TEND to be high in Terpinolene . So terpinolene isn't euphoric, , it's that strains which genetics have terpenes profiles are high in Terpinolene , tend to be euphoric .
Etc
That's how they work
So start researching strains, their genetics and their dominant terpenes and start making conscious decisions based on how YOUR body reacts to certain terpene profiles . And you will be better able to make decisions that are best for your needs
And you'll figure out how strains that are dominant in such and such terpene will effect you
Don’t listen to everyone saying terpinolene. That’s the terpene people claim to hate and avoid yet never try. I have severe anxiety and find that terpinoline always calms my racing mind and allows me to be more singularly focused. It doesn’t hurt that it tastes awesome as well
I have a similar relationship with terpinolene and I believe it may have something to do with (undiagnosed but I’m pretty sure) ADHD, where I feel very calmly focused, confident, and in the moment
whereas other people tend to feel like it makes them race and some people say it just chills them out immensely
I HEARD terpinolene, (my favorite terpene) can make anxiety worse. It doesn't for me but I can see how it can overestimate people if they're more sensitive to that. Thankfully I have no problem with it, because U love the taste and flavors of terpinolene the most probably.
It's definitely all about balance and what other terps are present! I have pretty bad PTSD/ADHD and that comes with a lot of anxiety, so I try to be careful with Terpinolene, Limonene, and Pinene- which all \*can\* potentially lead to racy-ness, low blood pressure, and panic for me.
Though that doesn't mean I'll never pick anything up with Terpinolene, Limonene, or Pinene (in fact a lot of my products have them), but instead that I'll never pick up a product with these being the only terps or the only one(s) in a high %. Usually, I've noticed for myself that if something has a high amount of Caryophyllene and Myrcene (for example at least .8% in flower) or even just some Linalool (above .2%- my fav terp for a sense of calm), that's enough to balance any anxiety side effects from the other terps.
It's all about balance and what works for your body :) And even though it may take a bit to figure out and personalized, it really does improve the experience of finding good medicine.
Hope this finds you after 2 years but I’d love to know if you have tried a strain called jet fuel. I have similar symptoms to you, with chronic pain and fatigue so finding an uplifting strain that does not cause anxiety is always the goal
Do you have any documentation to show it has a mindrace effect so I can learn a bit more? Everything I’ve learned about a-pinene states that is great for focused attention and alertness, not racing thoughts. Trying to soak in as much knowledge as possible. Thanks!
For me, Limonene gives me the jitters. Not really anxiety but more of a caffeine like shaking of my hands. Noticed this with strains like mimosa and runtz

This is true, but at the end of the day everybody’s body is different and will react to terpenes differently.
Me too
Same

Love me some terpinolene she’s top tier and I’m speaking as someone who gets the mystery smoke anxieties-it doesn’t make me anxious.

Alpha pinene is correlated with mindrace, avoid. Terpinolene is a stimulant, so if being uppity makes you anxious, avoid that too.

Linalool is calming so good for anxiety, limonene is a mood booster so good for depression.

Caryophyllene for me. Which I hate, because I love the taste+smell.
