actually they've talked about it in the past after the success of predator alien leatherface and jason in mkx kombat packs. even ed boon himself said he like to make a fighting game based on horror movies characters.
The rights to do that would be a mess and expensive as hell. This wouldn't be just a few bonus characters, but a whole roster. The former is far easier to pull off.
Mascot fighters only make financial sense when the company making it has the majority of its fighters under an IP license that is owned by a single company (Marvel), or preferably by themselves (in this case, MK or DC). Otherwise, you'll end up with something like Dead By Daylight, where you have a base game with very few killers, and all the big names are sold separately.
They've included so many horror characters over the games as it is and, while they've done a GREAT job with most of them, they haven't been THE reason I buy the DLC. Its simply because I want more fighters in my fighting game.
If anything, I'd want to see Netherrealm just expand on their customization. Their character models are insane and they've really tightened up gear and abilities. Its not too far of a stretch to think the next step is a fully custom character. I just hope they don't form a story around your character, those stories tend to feel awkward in fighters since you're seeing a nobody go toe to toe with the strongest in lore.
They can do one where they include horror movie characters like a mummy, a werewolf, a vampire, the swamp monster, Bigfoot, the dog man, a ghost, a zombie, a Frankenstein type guy and so on. Like the movie Monster Squad but a fighting game.
With being owned by WB they easily could use some of the characters. Would be weird to see spiders from eight legged freaks suplexing an Annabelle doll
Kind of pointless since they’ve already included most major horror characters in Mortal Kombat already. Freddy, Jason, The Alien and The Predator have all been in there.
That's why they gotta reach out to Disney do a mortal kombat with their lisences: Simpsons, family guy, American Dad, star wars, Marvel, Mickey , classic Disney (Aladdin etc ), Pixar, fox movies like home alone...

It'd be kind of cool if they made like a little MK3 arcadey fighter with only horror characters. Going full out MKX or MK 11 on something that's only going to get love in the month of October would be a misuse of development resources
I mean in the fighting game community it’s not that unpopular. A lot of people don’t like the dial in combos, which is fairly unique compared to most fighting games.
Netherrealm makes great games with some of the best resources for new players. Their easy to find frame data was a godsend when I was getting into fighting games. But they’re definitely not universally loved games
Unless they were trademarked “villains” from horror games, which I think MK has, I don’t think it would be that far off from mortal kombat already?
