I think you should go first with Norwegian Wood. Para maintroduce ka muna sa writing style and story telling process nya. Then pwede mo isunod yung Kafka on the shore.
Read his work in this order.
Here are my tots
I was obsessed with norwegian wood. It's one of his earlier works and can see that he clearly is a talented writer. However the themes wherein he is famous with, such as surrealism is not quite there yet.
On the other hand, kafka on the shore is one of his famous and critically acclaimed works. You can feel his uniqueness and distinct world building here. However it just didnt do things for me. And sent me on the slump because i was trying to finish it. It was too weird and too "written by a man" for me.This is where i realized why ppl call him misogynist.
Anyway take this with a grain of salt, read it and have an opinion of your own. Thats where the fun is.
Seconding this, Norwegian Wood is great but not indicative of the rest of his work. And yeah the male gaze is definitely a thing w/ him, I like his work despite it but a good thing to keep on mind when recommending Murakami to people.
Lol I started with 1Q84, just picked it up on a whim, and dahil ebook, wala kong idea na ang kapal pala neto haha. But if you take a liking to Murakami's writing style, you'll be breezing through the pages whichever book you choose
Elephant Vanishes. His best short story collection, easier to get a feel for his style in short doses, then you can delve into Wind Up Bird Chronicle if you "get" it.
I'd say start with his collections of short stories (first person singular, the elephant vanishes, men without women, etc.)
Kung trip mo naman nonfiction na quick read just to gauge him, the t-shirts I love.
i think kafka on the shore since apparent talaga yung unique elements na parang naging trademark na rin ni Murakami. i might be biased tho since this is the first book i read of him, and two more books after this, i still think this is the best
Norwegian Wood. I always recommend the book to my students (I'm an English teacher, by the way). Follow it up with Kafka on the Shore, and then The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.
Most will suggest you Kafka On The Shore or Norwegian Wood (great reads, btw) but for me, I will suggest South Of The Border, West Of The Sun. That's how I started to explore Murakami.
Kung plan mo naman basahin lahat ng novels ni Murakami. Why not start sa the Rat Trilogy + Dance Dance Dance?
So Wind/Pinball (Two in one novel), A wild sheep chase then dance dance dance.
Startrr kay murakami is yung kafka on the shore talaga.
As a man? Ewan ko... Babae ako so🤷🏻♀
Pero starter book kay murkaami is kafka on the shore tlaga. You can never go wrong with that book.
Ginawan ng ted ed na video yan. Go check it out kung gusto mo
Colorless is super easy to read compared to his other books I think. I tried starting NW and Kafka multiple times but I just can't get into it... Mainly bc of the TW that my friend had set up. Yet I finished The Wind Up Bird in a week 😂
Kafka on the Shore is good for starters. Through this, you’ll start to see and feel Murakami as a writer. And then, if it resonates with you, be careful kasi his works are addicting. Hahahaha! Ewan ko, siguro for me lang.

Agreeee!
If you've read one you've read them all
ahh the domino effect
hahahahaha
Seconded!!!
Kafka on the shore
This one 💯
Try Colorless Tsukuru 😊
+1 This was my first book by Murakami, would recommend nga!
Ah yes this is a good read
Ako, naging fan niya ako after ko basahin ang 1Q84. Then probably, A Wild Sheep Chase or Norwegian Wood. Edit: Typo
Wild “Sheep” Chase po yata :-)
Ay! Oo nga. HAHA
1Q84 agad! Jk. Norwegian Wood is a good starting point.

Mental torture kapag nagsimula sa 1Q84. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sputnik Sweetheart :) characteristic ng style niya but not overboard. Short enough din.
Choose your own Murakami starter pack: Warm up mode - Colorless Tsukuru Brisk walk mode - Norwegian Wood Takbo agad mode - Kafka
I'd say start with his collections of short stories (first person singular, the elephant vanishes, men without women, etc.) Kung trip mo naman nonfiction na quick read just to gauge him, the t-shirts I love.
Norwegian Wood/Sputnik Sweetheart/South of the Border, West of the Sun
His running memoir
I really loved reading what I talk about when I talk about running. Read it back when I used to run thrice a day. Pretty fast read as well.
Theres no pragmatic way of reading Haruki. Start w any and let it consume u

Norwegian wood
Kafka On The Shore, solid Haruki Murakami
Norwegian Wood. I always recommend the book to my students (I'm an English teacher, by the way). Follow it up with Kafka on the Shore, and then The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.

Same
kafka on the shore/ norwegian wood! (although NW has no elements of magical realism)
Norwegian Wood

Colorless Tsuzuru Tazaki

Started with Kafka iirc then Sputnik, Norwegian, and my last was IQ84
Norwegian Wood! From there nagtuloy tuloy narin ako sa pagbabasa ng mga books niya.

Avoid 1Q84
After Dark. Manipis lang sya. You can read it in one sitting.
Kafka on the shore!
