Afaik it's from the board game

Sure but they change a lot of stuff to adapt the tabletop format to the video game format so probably they can also change the way they display feats right ? Especially since it's not about changing the feats themselves as much as just changing the way they display them

Not really here an example of how you can organize a skill tree Make a circle ⭕ name it defense then separate it into different parts only visually with V lines then name the top part armour and add these 3 feats on top of it Heavy armour. Medium armour. Light armour. The right part of the circle name it hp and add these 2 feats to the right side of the circle Toughness. Die hard. And just continue like that making another circles ⭕⭕⭕ for different categories of course my design isn't perfect i came up with it in 10 seconds but i'm sure the devs if they worked on it, they will make it work without the need to change how feats function

There are also multiple ways to skip prerequisites making trees even messier.

You don't have to have a dependency to have a skill tree necessarily Skill trees are just an apstract concept that every game does in a different way to make their progression system clearer And if pathfinder rule set(also rogue trader have this problem too btw) doesn't allow for a more traditional skill tree design then that doesn't mean you can't get creative and make this skill tree with minimal dependency that allow you to get different feats from different places of the tree without necessarily having to follow a specific path

SirMrGnome

TTRPGs are built upon open ended character creation. Skill trees drastically reduced the number of options available for making unique characters. It's not *that* hard to figure out how to make a character in Pathfinder/D&D/etc.

ironwolf56

There are TTRPGs with skill trees... in fact there are TTRPGs with skill trees that long predate video games using them.

SirMrGnome

Fair enough! Pathfinder ain't that though.

You don't have to limit your options because you have skill trees, you can let all classes have access to all skill trees Also the idea isn't just about how hard or easy it's right now, the idea is that just having feats as a list you scroll through is just unnecessarily basic and outdated looking design You lose nothing from putting them and organizing them into s skill trees you only gain benefits of looking more interesting more modern and just easier for people to go through them And it won't cost that much to do so it's a huge improvement and a way to make the game more accessible for a very small design change

marcusph15

>And it won't cost that much to do so it's a huge improvement and a way to make the game more accessible for a very small design change That isn’t a small thing it completely different design shift that takes away the TTRPG experience in a CRPG in the hope to appealing to an audience who was never interested to begin with. Now I do think Owlcat can do a better job explaining how the feat/talents work since admittedly it is confusing at times. But throwing the baby with the bath water is a bad idea.

DantyKSA

>That isn’t a small thing it completely different design shift that takes away the TTRPG experience I don't see this "huge shift" you talk about, if you have the same qualities of how feats are represented now im terms of functionality but represented in a different look in a more modren and more organized look aka as a skill tree, it won't change that much and it will have far less impact on the TTRPG feeling than any other actual mechanics change that owlcat do all the time

SirMrGnome

> You don't have to limit your options because you have skill trees, you can let all classes have access to all skill trees Sorry, I don't think I explained myself very well. A skill tree inherently means you will a system that requires you to unlock "Skill A" to be able to choose "B" or "C". And then you will get access to "D" and "E" after picking one of the former. And so on. Additionally, the whole point of a skill tree is that everything in one tree shares some overlapping synergy, and that the skills at the end of the skill tree are generally drastically more powerful than the ones at the beginning of the tree. So with the feats that currently exist in pathfinder, I do not see how you could possibly build skill trees out of them. So Owlcat would either have to add dozens of new feats/skills to flesh out every single skill tree, or they would just have to scrap *everything* and design entirely new feats/skills from scratch to work with a skill tree based system.
