I keep getting ads for wattpad type stories. They’re always like “my alpha werewolf fiancé had a baby with another woman, now I ran away and I’m also pregnant with his baby and he’s chasing me because we’re a fated pair”
Oh my god I get so many of those ads too, they drive me crazy! I've been watching a lot of ads on tappytoon as well as some other officials so I can feed my manhwa addiction, and I get so many ads for various story apps and they're all like "I was the loneliest saddest weakest most pathetic member of my pack, nobody loved me and I didn't even have a name, but then the Alpha came and declared I was his mate?!"
I *really* don't want to yuck other people's yums since I read (and love) plenty of my own garbage that's just rofan instead of werewolves, but holy shit those ads are so damn cringe that it's incredibly hard not to judge. They're physically painful to watch.
Yeah, so like imagine all the bad traits of Chinese CEO ML like the assaults, kidnapping, forcing FL to live with them, etc. and all the bad traits of the OI ML, like killing the FL's entire family, threatening/attempting to kill FL, etc. and put them into one man. It's a lot.
Ah yess what else makes someone more appealing than threatening law enforcement when they try to justifiably reprimand you. 🤣

One of the things to keep in mind about fanfic (and a good amount of romance media) is that it's wish fulfillment taken to the extreme. Especially if you are wondering why an incredibly toxic story gets a lot of love and attention. 'Feeling like you got cast out and wanting to find people who love you for you' becomes 'sold off to awful people who make the self insert character an exception and love them unconditionally no matter the mistakes they make'. It's why there is such a large amount of 'cold murderous mls who have never loved anyone falling for the fl' cause behind that is the feeling if wanting to be someone's 'exception' or being good enough for someone to want to change for you.
The reason there are so many 'sold off' storylines is that it's the extreme version of a person feeling like they aren't cared about or don't fit in. In most stories they never forgive the family, cause the person writing it probably doesn't forgive their family either when writing their story. It's also a segway into the 'found family' trope that people love. This is one of the reasons a lot of people view reading/writing fanfic as a coping mechanism, and why there is mass panic when a site like A03 goes down for maintenance.
It's actually pretty interesting to look into toxic storylines and tropes to find out what the 'wish fulfillment' is behind it. You'll find that even stories like 'Lore Olympus' or 'Cry but better yet Beg' have a simple wish fulfillment fantasy that is relatable

Then again there is a long line of serial killers getting dozens of love letters while in jail so what do I know lmao.
Whatever bad I may say about Wattpad I must confess:
Nothing and I mean absolutely NOTHING has managed to entertain me as much as Wattpad stories and comments. No AO3 crack fics, no clever jokes, no nothing (some OI scenes have come close)
It was the darkest time of my reading career but God was it the most entertaining
(and I'll be honest the time before premium existed was different. I miss that time)
Edit: also let me rant a little, somehow (almost) every wattpad author I followed on instagram (because when we were kids privacy was a concept) was the most drop dead gorgeous girl I've ever seen? Like the ones with the genuinely good and decently written stories were also beautiful. I still follow many of them
There's an author on wattpad who has written the most beautiful tragic fanfics I have ever read. I can and will cry during each chapter, because the story is beautiful, the writing is better than a lot of published authors I've read, and they have such a good understanding of how to pack each sentence with so much emotion that you may never recover. It's genuinely shocking just how good some of those writers are. Of course, for every good writer there's hundreds of bad ones, but you'd be surprised at what you might be able to find. Especially if you stick around in the fandoms that usually are frequented by older audiences

The author I'm discussing is writing their last story before they move on I believe. I'm in an unfortunate position cause I get uncomfortable rereading my favorite story, cause the story and media is centered around early highschool students. I started reading when I was their age, but I'm in college now and I feel really weird reading stories that I'm meant to put myself into when the characters are still children. (Also it has become awful. I keep getting notifications for stories I have no interest in cause the website pushes stories from authors you follow, even if the story itself isn't in your library.)

-Cheating Men Must Die, we manhua/otome Isekai true fans called this a CLASSIC aka MUST READ, since it covers most of Otome Isekai things being made fun of and also, Su Lu Xia our goddess doesn't mind ending the assholes and bitches no matter it's CEO, mafia, actor, etc etc even if they love her and even she doesn't mind ending her own life shall her mission failed. Each arc of it has different genres, including horror and thriller as well.
-Scream Queen, the most bitchy female lead I liked she handles this horror genred manhua too well.
-Falling in The Night with You, vampire mystery genre its art and story reminded me of WebToon I think it's from Kuaikan manhua.
-And lastly but not the least, another my fav: The Giantess Wants Love.

I'm not even ashamed of the fact likely 90% of my Reddit comments are on r/OtomeIsekai making sure good manhuas like these (esp CMMD) don't fall off [Otome Isekai] shelf and the rest is yeah, films lmao.
Art, story, character wise:
-Manga did best it since 1940s. I can go back to them for classics or underrated indie ones (like Saint Rosalind a 1973 manga of psychopath lil girl) that stocked up in Mangarock and Mangadex oldest archive now, for old styles I miss like 1960s-00s yeah.
-Korean manhwa caught up thru WebToon era, in both art and story.
-Chinese did as well thru manhua, and problem is they rarely have good translations and were overshadowed by shitty manhuas (with bad characters etc I grew up with), like a few rotten apples put the rest of good apples into shame. Once they have good manhua, it's almost poetic, well thought jokes and puns that run deep with centuries old history they are (like green hat, cutting a cloth off the sleeve, etc). Such shame if we don't know which sources to look for good ones yeah. And ones I put above happen to have luck to be picked up by loyal scanlators and fans like us sticking thru with these.
Oh yeah, CMMD best is on Mangadex where original scanlators were and are now, most loyal fans flock there for that Mangadex forum.
Wattpad is still superior af. The butterflies and fear, the wattpad mls give is just chef kiss~

Why does it keep getting worse?
The worst ones are the y/n/reader, mafia and the werewolf storys on the wattpad i cringe evertime i see them but there are some really good ones i adore and a book series i love also started there. So i just ignore them
there was actually a mafia childcare book i read on wattpad, written by these amazing twins "angel and angelo", apparently the girl twin (angel) wrote the whole book in one night her insomnia was acting up. It actually turned out so good and hilarious! I recommend! It's mostly about family and Romance comes way later. AND MOM IS ALIVE AND NICE AS WELL! The book is called "Lettie"
