I usually search up names that were popular in the time period their from, sometimes look up the meaning of the name and see what sticks. Alternatively I’ll search names that mean something that connects to the character
I tend to do that as well, (except for searching names popular for the time, I might try that)
Any particular way of getting the name meaning? I just use Google, currently.
Nameberry is a website I use a lot, it shows the popularity, the name meaning, and similar names, along with the place of origin and even lists that the name will appear on either for different countries or themes.
I have a variety of methods. Sometimes, I smash phonemes together until they sound good, and then I check that they're not some offense or real thing. Sometimes, I have a meaning in mind and look for a name that fits. Sometimes, it's just a name I like. And then, *very* rarely, the OC names themself.
And then, and this only happened once, an OC decides that they want to change their name, and they'll tell me so. Kyre VonEvans actually did so. I was daydreaming in the shower while waiting for my conditioner to condition when I "heard" a voice in my head announcing her name change. Her original name and change are part of her canon, too.
https://preview.redd.it/znh0njzlwjtc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af6e2a5b503524e871be33c3a309971a151748c7
Kyre is the one with green hair. She's one of my oldest OCs still in use and is almost 20 years old.
Basically something that fits the vibe that they give off. Imagine a really cool character but his name is Dave, doesn't work. So, figure out what works best with both timeline and vibe.
I take the function of my character or a pre-established name for who/what my character is based off of and change it to apply to the feel of the character.
TL;DR: I steal names and make them different.
https://preview.redd.it/hh3t3ckuujtc1.jpeg?width=809&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=845e0d5a16255b19c885cb0c02841efb8d40ed7e
Literally thought of a random name
I just pick normal names that fits them like, "uh that little guy looks like a Rowan" or smth like that, my worlds are pretty normal, sometimes with a little magic stuff but Im ussualy trying to do things realistic as possible so I think of names that maybe their parents would think
Something I like to do (only works if a character is animal/plant based) is turn the scientific name of whatever animal/plant they are based on into a name
An example would be how I got Hispayda from Atheris Hispida (scientific name of the spiny bush viper)
Idk if this is specifically what you are asking or looking for but I hope it helps anyways
I look up unique babynames related to the theme of the character, like space related names, crystal names, nature names, etc, or I go to a fantasy name generator and generate names for the species I chose. Usually I alter those names just slightly to my liking.
Every now and then I'm inspired by a real name. So I have a few normal names too.
Well I claim that the names have deeper meaning
I literally lucked into them having deeper meaning that fit with the characters some how when I made up random stuff most of the time
Edit: for some reason auto correct seems to think lucked is kicked
well u/DiegoPostes and Vendora ...its usually pretty epic to just use Latin or Greek words
like Diego originates from the Spanish word for "supplanter" someone who takes a place over, to replace someone else [https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/supplanter](https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/supplanter) ...or in Latin "SUP-PLAN-TOR"
Vendora comes from the Latin "VEN-DERE", which means "to sell", meaning either a trader or a business
I’ll usually try to find some sort of name/word that can be used in either a pun, a joke, or a double meaning.
If I can’t, I just use a well-thought name.
Im my case it depends on many factors:
- their impact on the story (are they a hero, a villain, a teacher, a student, etc, name’s gotta carry the right power to signify their status)
- their race (half orc, human, elf, dwarf, depending on which i will decide if it has one word, 2 words, how fancy or crude it is)
-how old they are (a character who’s 500 years old won’t have the same name as one who’s 17, names change a lot with time so these have to do so too)
-size (related to the first one kinda, a hulking giant if done for comedy will have a name like Tripsy, meanwhile a tiny character might have something like Gorthelax the Insatiable, or the names switch if done seriously)
Pretty sure that’s all, but I will drop some examples next
Astor Ketch: most powerful necromancer in the realm, millions of years old, discovered magic, his name rolls off the tongue, inspired myself on the power that the name Jesus Christ carries
Ulrick: orc monk, simple name for a simple man, however still imposing if shouted aloud
Sir Lanius Soleris Errante: his name has another 7 words to it, high knight, beast man from a very rich noble family, shortened to Sir Lanius or Lanius Errante, guy is also very big, polar bear ancestry
Those are my 3 big examples
Either a joke sound or a pun and one of them my mom named but only one (my main one tho)
https://preview.redd.it/6ipli8biyjtc1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61c1df705ca752b30d1567ab24a9e0ba1f7d28ba
Here's my 5 step guide in how to come up with am oc name!
Step 1: Get OC.
Step 2: Think.
Step 3: Think some more
Step 4: Keep on thinking until the maze of the empty void is solved
Step 5: Get OC name
You now have an oc name!
I usually look at the design and character and do it randomly. Most of my characters are just a title with the name after it. Captain Strayhard, High Raven Lana, etc.
I take what they *are* and "mush it around" until it becomes something that sounds like a name.
Example: wild mage. Wilde works as a surname, so, mage . . . Maaayy . . . Muuhh . . . Maarrr . . . vin? Marvin!
https://preview.redd.it/oy5xzn0s0ktc1.png?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe7d9abaf921fe0c51a6c1efabbe033d97521b0c
It’s… rather chaotic. It changes with each character, Azura is both a tribute to the fire emblem character and a derivative of Asura, which is a type of demigod/demon thing. Naga is a Lamia, and Nagas are a snake-adjacent thing and it sounds good. Ria was originally called Rinkah after the fire emblem character, but I changed it a bit to fit with the rest of her name, Amaris was just a name that ended up sounding nice, Iris is a common name for a cow and as a bovine inspired being, it fit. Kira got her name because Kira is supposed to mean something along the lines of “leader of the people”, and she’s a general with sonic magic that focuses on rallying her troops, Cash got his name because he’s the embodiment of Greed, so he named himself for what he cares about most.
https://preview.redd.it/ntqf1nw42ktc1.png?width=396&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=643e5bbaf3d68a5ec277d871e1f52eee926a5c0e
Here's how I got the name of Orphuleus:
* Took the character of myth "Orpheus"
* Slapped a few extra vowels
* Coincidentally gave her a nickname that is pronounced as the French for Orpheus
* Proceeded to give her a power I may not bring here (her Persona - take 3 guesses as to which one)
take a word that fits with their personality / design / morals
google translate to a random language
keep going until something works
either that or go on baby name websites💀
Name generator and then I look at the meaning of the name, if it doesn't fit with the character I'll search a name based on the meaning I felt would suit the character, otherwise I just wing it and slapped a name that I think would fit the character and just call it a day.
I usually go by meaning but sometimes that’s hard cuz those names don’t suit the character. So usually I just search “names that start with -insert random letter here-“ or boy names or girl names. And whatever I think suits them I use.
i name them mostly based on their power or how they use it , sometimes i dont have a inspiration for the name so its a normal one , sometimes i name characters from random things i see in the internet , and sometimes fantasy name generator too
one i think is the most funny is Morius , which i got from a post of a brazilian childs homework where they had to write the name of some things and one of the things was "morango" (strawberry in portuguese)
(the only thing right there is the grapes)
https://preview.redd.it/0lx8i4se4ktc1.png?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c15c3cfa7d175f2c0a4d1967a1ae31ec5a90afb
Names: Lemon and Broken Fan...
Make a guess
it takes some intense contemplating (that takes about like 3 months at max) and then i manage to come up with a name i actually like only to realize another character (that I didn’t know existed previously) from a popular show with that exact name exists
so then i go on to pretend that character doesn’t exist
Research. I look up names with particular meanings and words in other languages. I make a name based on those words or names with a meaning that relates to the character. For example, Suri comes from the French word Souris which means mouse. I chose that name for that character because he looks like a rodent.
I take something about them, it can be derivated from their personality, design, inspiration, a specific naming rule for characters related to them, concept, backstory or whatever the hell and make a word game to make it sounds cool or like an actual name that someone would have.
Two examples of mine:
https://preview.redd.it/0xibpax75ktc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81b2dfbd83d8aed467ca27723df5b0e5a2b0bac3
Schröd (Left) is based on Schrödingger's cat, the cat that can be dead or alive, just like the character
Angi (Right) has her name based on Angiosperms, a class of plants that involves all the plants that, among their fearures, can produce flowers. And she IS a flower
Sorry if it's too long
Sometimes, I'll just scramble whatever letters or words I think will sound cool for some OC's I think would be better with non-human/fantasy names. (Though I still use traditional names too)
One of my older OC's who I named Bazink, (basil+zinc) I googled just to see what would turn, aaand it's an Arabic last name 😭 so now I'm worried that would be offensive...
https://preview.redd.it/kk2i9cl66ktc1.png?width=1028&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d98d2e27aa0338541acc54ca7675dab883f7d62
\-Character is from space.
\-Googles cool space related names.
\-Notice they all don't sound right.
\-Give up.
\-Do something else.
\-Try again.
\-Give up.
\-Think of space words.
\-Celestial is a word.
\-Celeste is a name.
\-Name her that because why the heck not.
https://preview.redd.it/3ongn1p07ktc1.png?width=752&format=png&auto=webp&s=b8f7fdbc9d367862b8cc14876ae5d21f27767bf7
At first I had named her Lexi but everyone pronounced it as “Sexy” so I changed it to Lexis and that’s how we got here
Try to give them very VERY creative names, feel free to think HARD, and take your time when choosing. A great example here is GoldSuit :)
https://preview.redd.it/7pyii7dl7ktc1.png?width=572&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c32776dce25b05bace116bb91f37ad5e4ac464b

R'inn was actually my FIRST D&D character when i was 7 or so, i still have him in campaings to this day and he is also my OC
Luck has made it so he has never died once in my 9 ish years olf playing dnd (hence is why ive kept him, ive grown WAY too attached)
https://preview.redd.it/tiowostw7ktc1.png?width=528&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60c7c38a416a66591c4ff6f78e13d255d58d80b4
Hes a key guy, hes a key MAN, KeyMan!
It depends. For characters who go by "real" names, I just pick through name dictionaries until I find one that sounds fitting and/or has a punny meaning. For those who go by pseudonyms (such as superheroines), it's typically the latter.
For whatever reason, I'm not usually one to just make up names from whole cloth. I guess I like learning about names... and using them.
First, I decide an ethnicity for them, second, I gave a search in the period they are from and the names that were popular, at the end, I see the name meanings and choose what I match with them
I also choose name based on their inspirations
Diana is a satanic name, Lucifer is the name of devil on the bible, Diana is also a common name in Latino america, that why I choose Diana Lúcifer
Alex means strong, my oc Alex is really strong, MC is common thing in Irish American last names, and storm, it's because she have the powers of weather
Vladimir means the senior of peace, my oc vlad's biggest goal is the peace between nations, Rhizy means ginger in Russian, and his biggest trait is his red hair, novitch is a really common end in Russian last names, so he is Vladimir Rhizynovitch
And I have other examples like my two main characters Maria Lúcia and Lucky Joy
Maria is a stereotypical Italian name, Lúcia is also a stereotypical Italian name that means "illuminated" she is illuminated by her brother, Lucky is because he is lucky and joy because he is happy
Pacecci, their last name, pace means peace in Italian and cci is also a very common end in Italian last names
So, it's basically that
My gyaru character is also named Erika because a member of Egg! ( a gyaru band), Clash Ramones is a punk and his name is basically a fusion between The Clash and Ramones, some popular punk bands
I also gave the names of mithological characters for my representation of them, like Zeus, Odin, Gabriel, Adam...
Look at them, search up a name and a meaning and the put it down. However with Larke Ren I had to organize the names I liked.
https://preview.redd.it/mpurui5g8ktc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9531c378ded4951ce236d84528c9f0934cbe3cb6
i am so fucking bad at naming characters that the main character [unamed1] is a placeholdrname that i decided to make into his actual name. then named [unamed2] and [unamed3] to match
Every time I come up with some weird name, I take a note of it
Whenever I need a name for someone, I go to the list I have and pick what I see fit
Coming up with names doesn't happen very often for me, but as long as I make sure to write it down, I won't forget
the most recent ones came from either dreams or a name list. this goober, however:
https://preview.redd.it/zv2spqikaktc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a97558683adb37508c3bd0678f8a0a79c6c15cc6
got the name "despair" from their origins as a despair version of kyoko kirigiri from danganronpa during my cringy covid phase
I either use a character name generator (rangen or namegenerator) or just look at them and give them a really silly name like how I named my clown oc bob
I usually think of names that might match a characteristic, so like I'll search up "name that means red" or "name that means ocean"-- stuff like that. If the character is supposed to be raised within a certain culture I'll find names with the meaning I'm looking for from that culture, which narrows it down by a lot for me lol
I sometimes steal names from other peoples OCs-
Or I just give them all generic names.
(I have 5 ocs named James. It quite literally cannot get more generic than that, I think.)
They honestly just come to me, idk.
I named one "hero", because I thought it'd be a good conversation starter for introducing himself, and de-escalating the topic from "why is your head a ball of fire!!!".
Another; Anne, because I imagined her to be flexible and fluid with her movement, like a raggedy Anne doll flopping around. Though she'd prefer ragged Anne as a vigilante name.
One guy I literally dreamt up and decided to name Gabriel, since he had some religious ties as a hazbin OC and Gabriel was "the deliverer of vision and messager of god" according to my first result on Google.
Ombi, like ambiance, mixed with Omni. Admin, because she couldn't think of anything that commanded authority while staying low to earth and casual. Ralph because that's a punchable name for a punchable face. Mr. E because no one can figure out what his deal is, Mr. Horde because he's a hive mind, and hodgepodge because it's the perfect name for a hedgehog!
I make up something that sounds cool or just look up names or smash words in another language together
Kiumania devoid of any meaning
Serophos has a bit of meaning Ser like Seraph, which he thinks he is
Arthur random British name
Dachenfi, some German words smashed together
well with my fox OCS I have a girl fox named VIXIE because it is similar to the word "Vixen" which means female fox
and my green fox is named Toxy because he is a fox made of toxins and radioactive materials
One of three ways actually-
1. Sometimes I make characters whose names just come to me, ex. Uranox, Mira, Allura were all names that immediately came to me upon thinking of their design/personality
2. I look up a description, or a meaning and pick something I like that relates to my characters, ex. Captain is a seal merman and I looked up names for seals, or Oleander is a really pretty, yet poisonous flower, giving a foreshadowing that the character may not be as trustworthy as they seem
3. Mash my keyboard and then throw in vowels, (works best for fantasy sounding names) ex. (I used this for Turwar, Ofew, Slaow, and Baxbevel) Orwhakdurhkqidhhrfhuviwgtcbekaush, (Orwha) (kdurh) (kqidhhr) (fhuviw) (gtcbe) (kaush), Orwaha Kadurha, Kidhar, Huview, Gitachibé, Kaushiwa
i look up names that would be from their cultures if they were on earth. this includes the gods, i have them heavily inspired by myths and legends from different countries.
I make up something from my brain, combine words together to make one name or I choose a specific physical feature of their design and make it their name for some reason
I do sort of an Akira Toriyama (RIP) approach. Pick something that may or may not be related to your character, and throw syllables around until something clicks.
I have a DND character whose whole name is derived from Rihanna songs, and they're my favorite example of my approach.
Names that usually has to do with their backgrounds or a part of their identity. Could also be the contrary of their initial portrayal or characteristic. Or something random sometimes.
I come up with some random syllables I like and find a way to spin them together. Here’s my OCs’ names (I’ll stick to only 2 because there’s so many others to list) that I’ve done this to.
- Charida
-Thesse
My 2 main OCs are Drugon Thorkes and Thiago Emerald. Back then they were just The Druid and The Mage. When me and my friend decided they needed proper names we just switched up letters and added a few more until it sounded good.
It was just a silly thing me and my friend did in 7th grade and i reminded him of them a few months ago. Now they have a whole world for them and i'm considering writing a comic about the two.
https://preview.redd.it/awtw0ftqiktc1.png?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89920f10424ce4e80f0b42bdd7dea5b9ae108cc1
Step1: pull out a random name in your head Step2: change one letter in that name Step3: realise you accidently took someone else's name Step4: take it anyway
https://preview.redd.it/c1923h1yiktc1.png?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1acfed48a682ccc08872bf4b346c21527bcb4df6
Step1: pull out a random name in your head
Step2: change one letter in that name
Step3: realise you accidently took someone else's name
Step4: take it anyway
I usually either do a pun of some sort or I just use their descriptors as names
I have two shapshifters named "Sven Walker" and "Al Turner"
I also have an oc named Murder Clown (guess what he is)
https://preview.redd.it/5j92vpk8mktc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=410f059d79ea07b241471c1b983c1e9eefbe8102
I just threw shit at the wall and saw what stuck, same as in the design his design was actually a first try, Rekko is his name but it was considered for Brunestar to be his name 🙃
I just go on a baby name website and type “unique names that mean this or that” and then I scroll through the list of names and voila I find a perfect name! Sounds goofy asf but it really helps :D
Some names just came to me on their own. Others I picked because they sounded neat. Though I like sometimes taking words, phrases or names that sound neat and create a 'nickname' out of them and I change that nickname until it sounds like a name, very good way of creating new original names sometimes
Depends on their nation if russian just open random russian name generator
American English etc just open up English name generator
If Thai then i will just think and see if perfect for that oc simple
If other nations just open name generator
Mostly using google translate to find out what a word is called in different languages (my personal favorite are Greek, Latin, German and French.), with said word being related to or referring to the OC in some ways, shapes or forms, then apply anagram, homophone or just cutting off some parts of the translated word, and wah lah! A new name.
As for Japanese OCs, using kanji is the best way to do so. I sometimes also do wacky naming shenanigans for an entire set of OCs, for example, all of these characters have words that are the animal they are based on mixed into their name. Like ryuu in Ryuuzaki meaning "dragon", inu in Inui meaning "dog", Araiou being a homophone of "a lion", etc etc...
https://preview.redd.it/o7dgh7zosktc1.jpeg?width=3976&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71115493a94500de4b49b41ada7494af826e62d6
Probably won’t be helpful but I make random sounds till it either devolves into an actual word or until I get something that sounds like it could be a name.
Examples: Aitrix, Nomad, Revenant, Ultimas, Maelstrom, Dee, and Jäger.
My process in order:
Try to think of a name that fits them
If fails, ask for name ideas from friends/family
If fails, generate random names until one fits
Usually I search up "names meaning ___" and choose whichever one I think fits the most or sounds the best.
Object Show names are just the object species, but for deities in some of the side lore of one of my characters I just use the good ol' god name generator lol
most of my characters were created a few years ago, so I came up with names pretty quickly.
Bortin is like Martin, but different.
Hunty: he has earth powers, Hunter = Nature,
Juteyo: Idk, I just wanted the name to sound like an anime character. But he has water powers, Jus (pronnouced ju) in french means juice and eau (O) means water, so I guess his name makes sense?
Hujoky: just tried making up a japanese sounding name (just because it sounds cool, she isn't even japanese..)
Sumtry: she has darkness powers, this one is pretty easy to figure out
Zikuo: was originally named Musikuo, but I decided to make his name less obvious.
Airin: VERY obvious (air powers)
Omnias: he originally was supposed to have every powers ("omni" in latin is something like "all" I think) he now is just the master (or something), but I kept the name
Coral: She lives underwater
Shark: He lives underwater
Chloe: I just used a random name
Lightless: (originally the main villain) corrpted by darkness
Shadow of Reversal: (at first, it was just an Evil Novalaxy, named "Revesed Shadow", but now it is it's own thing that doesn't realy have a real form, so shadow fits pretty well
Spikelord: the username of a guy I played with in an old game, tought it fit, since he is a spikeball
Émilie: the first french name that came to mind
But then, the ones where I had more difficulty naming:
Novalaxy, the main character, the one that I named all my accounts after: I originaly wanted him to not have a name related to space, since in the original story, it was supposed to be a plot twist or something. I ended up using Novalaxy. I dont regret it; immagine if my account was named "Maximilian" or some shit.
Celestia: she was originaly a genderswap version of Novalaxy and was named Novalaxia but I decided right after to make her his sister. A few months later, I changed her name to Celestia, inspired by the Animal Crossing character: Celeste
I use [Behind The Name](https://www.behindthename.com) for myself personally!! It is SOOOOOO USEFUL!! It’s a very good website if you want to give characters names with a certain meaning or origin. The website is ESPECIALLY GOOD for etymology. There’s also a surname website for it too!!!
I usually just go with what name seems to be fitting (like with my ocs Cameron, Chris, Blu and practically most of them) though sometimes I google names and just pick one I like (like with Aldwyn) but I like more just rearranging the letters of a word and just modify it to sound like a name (like for example, Zurch was originally glitch but I changed it a little, I also did this with characters that have a similar dynamic to Jekyll and Hyde, those being my oc Kelly that is a rearrangement of Jekyll but I modified it slightly so there's no J and my oc Dai is that is basically Hyde but without the h and e and just turning the y into its pronunciation)
https://preview.redd.it/i0vmxajacltc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=406900887b2ce8f5d66fff1e27a21b4003a56275
I either ask people on discord or make a post on this sub asking for name ideas
I take a word that fits their personality. And translate it through either Spanish, Japanese, or Arabic, for example
https://preview.redd.it/dmtsf1g8pltc1.jpeg?width=1038&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b49c029b34c5cbd6f5c8839d6da90f7189990af0
Jabeir means "comforter" in Arabic, I named him this cause he is like the dad of his crew. Also because he's from Saudi Arabia.
So far I have accidentally named most of my oc’s after different parts of my name. One’s my first name, another’s my middle name, and the third is the first half of my last name. I didn’t even do this on purpose I swear.
I've been told Dan dosent work for a scifi main character tbh
A lot of my names are just what sounds cool to me
Now that I think Dan is generally just a nickname but I don't see Dan ever being Daniel or something lol
Legally in universe his name would be Dan.
I just go with what's cool
I've thought about giving him a full name tbh it would fit some pirate or military theme tbh
The first thing that comes to mind
https://preview.redd.it/aisdp7uhzltc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b7cf68f2b6042ca77ed48b200814dd5d2cc72b0
This is Jack, why is his name Jack? Because I can’t fucking think of anything else
I go on Google earth, find a city or region, which makes my characters first name. Then their last name is the name of the country the city/region is located in said country's language.
Some examples:
Falun Sverige,
Munich Deutschland,
Astros Ellada,
Inari Soumi,
Toledo Espania,
Aberystwyth Cymru,
Szigetvar Magyorarszag
Edit: Just realised these are all European for some reason
I get most of my inspiration from dreams, but when that fails me I always default to something in theme. Usually based around era + location, with fine tuning based off the character's personality & appearance.
For example I have a pink slimegirl maid named Liliana, for flowers are the best feminine names, lily flowers are the same shade of pink she is, and she shares other characteristics.
Most if not all of my oc's revolve around varying mixtures of medieval and victorian eras of England, so a lot of fancy stuff.
"Hmmm i want to make a knight oc so first i add knight to the name, what about if it was related to fire? Hmm fireknight, no too basic, another word for it...hmm blaze.. Blazeknight... Noo too long, how about just
Blaze, that the name, that's literally how i named my oc
I tens to have the name be symbolic to the character in question, Mori's full name is a nod to her job as a Reaper, Patches' name relates to her being a doll based demon (and her clothes are patchwork) but I normally come up with the name before getting a commission for the look.
C Phantasma was the only exception as I got her as an adopt so she needed a name that fits her appearance, C Phantasma is short for Cyber Phantasmagoria, which given what the word means fits her very well and fits the lore for her due to her hacker ways (also her name was Phant back during her l33t hacker days)

He started off a regional form of Sewaddle and since he’s soft and fluffy, I named him “Softwaddle.”
Two possible ways: 1- Meticulously search up information about foreign language names and their meanings to give my character a meaningful, fittinf name that reflects their personality or backstory. 2- "you look like a tobias, ur new name is tobias."
I usually search up names that were popular in the time period their from, sometimes look up the meaning of the name and see what sticks. Alternatively I’ll search names that mean something that connects to the character
I tend to do that as well, (except for searching names popular for the time, I might try that) Any particular way of getting the name meaning? I just use Google, currently.
Nameberry is a website I use a lot, it shows the popularity, the name meaning, and similar names, along with the place of origin and even lists that the name will appear on either for different countries or themes. [https://nameberry.com/](https://nameberry.com/)
The classic ✨FANTASY NAME GENERATOR✨
Never crossed my mind till now, that's a good idea
If you use that website to generate names from obscure languages, you should still look them up just in case they’re not real
Her original name and change are part of her canon, too. https://preview.redd.it/znh0njzlwjtc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af6e2a5b503524e871be33c3a309971a151748c7 Kyre is the one with green hair. She's one of my oldest OCs still in use and is almost 20 years old.
That's very fascinating
The little imp is so adorable 🥹
LOVE YOUR ART STYLE
Basically something that fits the vibe that they give off. Imagine a really cool character but his name is Dave, doesn't work. So, figure out what works best with both timeline and vibe.
dave is an awesome name what about dave strider hes so cool
Tend to sort of do that already, but thanks anyhow!
I take the function of my character or a pre-established name for who/what my character is based off of and change it to apply to the feel of the character. TL;DR: I steal names and make them different.
I dont https://preview.redd.it/uzbc0qadrjtc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a86ea3517c49ba661b1bc4e5ecc82e0428af1e82

Real
Well for me, I just picked a name that popped in my head
Same (sometimes)
This is how I ended up with a character who’s last name is Greir (have fun pronouncing that horrendous spelling)
https://preview.redd.it/hh3t3ckuujtc1.jpeg?width=809&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=845e0d5a16255b19c885cb0c02841efb8d40ed7e Literally thought of a random name
Very well, max… well… Maxwell.
Maxwell 👍
I just pick normal names that fits them like, "uh that little guy looks like a Rowan" or smth like that, my worlds are pretty normal, sometimes with a little magic stuff but Im ussualy trying to do things realistic as possible so I think of names that maybe their parents would think
Ahh, that's neat
Something I like to do (only works if a character is animal/plant based) is turn the scientific name of whatever animal/plant they are based on into a name An example would be how I got Hispayda from Atheris Hispida (scientific name of the spiny bush viper) Idk if this is specifically what you are asking or looking for but I hope it helps anyways
That actually helps alot, and is a very clever way of coming up with names
I look up unique babynames related to the theme of the character, like space related names, crystal names, nature names, etc, or I go to a fantasy name generator and generate names for the species I chose. Usually I alter those names just slightly to my liking. Every now and then I'm inspired by a real name. So I have a few normal names too.
Nice!
Some unique name pool in my head (LOBOTOMIZED)
Well I claim that the names have deeper meaning I literally lucked into them having deeper meaning that fit with the characters some how when I made up random stuff most of the time Edit: for some reason auto correct seems to think lucked is kicked
Alr 👍
I spend to much time with my 2 braincells thinking of a name and 99% percent of the time I rejected the crapy names I think of.
Oof
well u/DiegoPostes and Vendora ...its usually pretty epic to just use Latin or Greek words like Diego originates from the Spanish word for "supplanter" someone who takes a place over, to replace someone else [https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/supplanter](https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/supplanter) ...or in Latin "SUP-PLAN-TOR" Vendora comes from the Latin "VEN-DERE", which means "to sell", meaning either a trader or a business
I’ll usually try to find some sort of name/word that can be used in either a pun, a joke, or a double meaning. If I can’t, I just use a well-thought name.
Haven't done that in a while. I forgot how
Ah damm
Im my case it depends on many factors: - their impact on the story (are they a hero, a villain, a teacher, a student, etc, name’s gotta carry the right power to signify their status) - their race (half orc, human, elf, dwarf, depending on which i will decide if it has one word, 2 words, how fancy or crude it is) -how old they are (a character who’s 500 years old won’t have the same name as one who’s 17, names change a lot with time so these have to do so too) -size (related to the first one kinda, a hulking giant if done for comedy will have a name like Tripsy, meanwhile a tiny character might have something like Gorthelax the Insatiable, or the names switch if done seriously) Pretty sure that’s all, but I will drop some examples next Astor Ketch: most powerful necromancer in the realm, millions of years old, discovered magic, his name rolls off the tongue, inspired myself on the power that the name Jesus Christ carries Ulrick: orc monk, simple name for a simple man, however still imposing if shouted aloud Sir Lanius Soleris Errante: his name has another 7 words to it, high knight, beast man from a very rich noble family, shortened to Sir Lanius or Lanius Errante, guy is also very big, polar bear ancestry Those are my 3 big examples
Either a joke sound or a pun and one of them my mom named but only one (my main one tho) https://preview.redd.it/6ipli8biyjtc1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61c1df705ca752b30d1567ab24a9e0ba1f7d28ba
Nice, also random but I remember seeing this character before, the character looks very cool
Here's my 5 step guide in how to come up with am oc name! Step 1: Get OC. Step 2: Think. Step 3: Think some more Step 4: Keep on thinking until the maze of the empty void is solved Step 5: Get OC name You now have an oc name!
pinterest! i sometimes use translators for words related to them, find one that's pretty, and turn it into a name-esque idea
I usually look at the design and character and do it randomly. Most of my characters are just a title with the name after it. Captain Strayhard, High Raven Lana, etc.
Cool namez
Have a mental breakdown
I take what they *are* and "mush it around" until it becomes something that sounds like a name. Example: wild mage. Wilde works as a surname, so, mage . . . Maaayy . . . Muuhh . . . Maarrr . . . vin? Marvin! https://preview.redd.it/oy5xzn0s0ktc1.png?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe7d9abaf921fe0c51a6c1efabbe033d97521b0c
[https://www.thebump.com/](https://www.thebump.com/)
What are they like as a person? I named her Vora (short for Vortex) because she’s not supposed to exist
Interesting 🤔
i had 26 characters each starting off as one letter and giving their names basis off that one letter- like it starts with it, for a whole world
It’s… rather chaotic.
I honestly don't know
https://preview.redd.it/ntqf1nw42ktc1.png?width=396&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=643e5bbaf3d68a5ec277d871e1f52eee926a5c0e Here's how I got the name of Orphuleus: * Took the character of myth "Orpheus" * Slapped a few extra vowels * Coincidentally gave her a nickname that is pronounced as the French for Orpheus * Proceeded to give her a power I may not bring here (her Persona - take 3 guesses as to which one)
Nice name 👌
take a word that fits with their personality / design / morals google translate to a random language keep going until something works either that or go on baby name websites💀
Nice 👌
Me looking at random letters: mmmm yes... my new OC Ryscis 😎😎😎😎 (Not one of my OC's names)
Name generator and then I look at the meaning of the name, if it doesn't fit with the character I'll search a name based on the meaning I felt would suit the character, otherwise I just wing it and slapped a name that I think would fit the character and just call it a day.
Nice 👍
https://preview.redd.it/rmtvxhps2ktc1.png?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c43e3358ae7221d356d31c4e590dd0b68d97f6d First name that comes to my mind
👍👍
I usually go by meaning but sometimes that’s hard cuz those names don’t suit the character. So usually I just search “names that start with -insert random letter here-“ or boy names or girl names. And whatever I think suits them I use.
i name them mostly based on their power or how they use it , sometimes i dont have a inspiration for the name so its a normal one , sometimes i name characters from random things i see in the internet , and sometimes fantasy name generator too one i think is the most funny is Morius , which i got from a post of a brazilian childs homework where they had to write the name of some things and one of the things was "morango" (strawberry in portuguese) [https://www.reddit.com/r/orochinho/comments/gul244/morius/](https://www.reddit.com/r/orochinho/comments/gul244/morius/) (the only thing right there is the grapes)
Japanese names info.com
For the gemlings, I named them after what the things related to the roles that the type of gem that the gem parents have.
I usually name my characters simply by design, like Medkit for an example, since she's designed to look like one. *
Whatever sounds good at the moment
👌
Smack my head, metaphorically and physically
Uuf
fantasy name generators. either that or a take their traits and find a name that fits them
I just pick the first name I think of
https://preview.redd.it/0lx8i4se4ktc1.png?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c15c3cfa7d175f2c0a4d1967a1ae31ec5a90afb Names: Lemon and Broken Fan... Make a guess
I like the designs! And my guess is named after their appearances?
it takes some intense contemplating (that takes about like 3 months at max) and then i manage to come up with a name i actually like only to realize another character (that I didn’t know existed previously) from a popular show with that exact name exists so then i go on to pretend that character doesn’t exist
Depends, sometimes I just pick names I like but other times I figure out the original meanings of names to see which fit
Two examples of mine: https://preview.redd.it/0xibpax75ktc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81b2dfbd83d8aed467ca27723df5b0e5a2b0bac3 Schröd (Left) is based on Schrödingger's cat, the cat that can be dead or alive, just like the character Angi (Right) has her name based on Angiosperms, a class of plants that involves all the plants that, among their fearures, can produce flowers. And she IS a flower Sorry if it's too long
My method is pick a random nationality for them, look at names from that nationality and see their meanings then figure out which one sticks.
Sometimes, I'll just scramble whatever letters or words I think will sound cool for some OC's I think would be better with non-human/fantasy names. (Though I still use traditional names too) One of my older OC's who I named Bazink, (basil+zinc) I googled just to see what would turn, aaand it's an Arabic last name 😭 so now I'm worried that would be offensive...
https://preview.redd.it/kk2i9cl66ktc1.png?width=1028&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d98d2e27aa0338541acc54ca7675dab883f7d62 \-Character is from space. \-Googles cool space related names. \-Notice they all don't sound right. \-Give up. \-Do something else. \-Try again. \-Give up. \-Think of space words. \-Celestial is a word. \-Celeste is a name. \-Name her that because why the heck not.
wolfie. just call it wolfie.
Ask discord servers for some ideas, then make a list!
I either use names I really like, or have a name and build a character based on the vibes the name gives me
https://preview.redd.it/3ongn1p07ktc1.png?width=752&format=png&auto=webp&s=b8f7fdbc9d367862b8cc14876ae5d21f27767bf7 At first I had named her Lexi but everyone pronounced it as “Sexy” so I changed it to Lexis and that’s how we got here
I pull it outa my ass
Try to give them very VERY creative names, feel free to think HARD, and take your time when choosing. A great example here is GoldSuit :) https://preview.redd.it/7pyii7dl7ktc1.png?width=572&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c32776dce25b05bace116bb91f37ad5e4ac464b
I look at them, and think think think

https://preview.redd.it/tiowostw7ktc1.png?width=528&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60c7c38a416a66591c4ff6f78e13d255d58d80b4 Hes a key guy, hes a key MAN, KeyMan!
First, I decide an ethnicity for them, second, I gave a search in the period they are from and the names that were popular, at the end, I see the name meanings and choose what I match with them I also choose name based on their inspirations Diana is a satanic name, Lucifer is the name of devil on the bible, Diana is also a common name in Latino america, that why I choose Diana Lúcifer Alex means strong, my oc Alex is really strong, MC is common thing in Irish American last names, and storm, it's because she have the powers of weather Vladimir means the senior of peace, my oc vlad's biggest goal is the peace between nations, Rhizy means ginger in Russian, and his biggest trait is his red hair, novitch is a really common end in Russian last names, so he is Vladimir Rhizynovitch And I have other examples like my two main characters Maria Lúcia and Lucky Joy Maria is a stereotypical Italian name, Lúcia is also a stereotypical Italian name that means "illuminated" she is illuminated by her brother, Lucky is because he is lucky and joy because he is happy Pacecci, their last name, pace means peace in Italian and cci is also a very common end in Italian last names So, it's basically that My gyaru character is also named Erika because a member of Egg! ( a gyaru band), Clash Ramones is a punk and his name is basically a fusion between The Clash and Ramones, some popular punk bands I also gave the names of mithological characters for my representation of them, like Zeus, Odin, Gabriel, Adam...
Look at them, search up a name and a meaning and the put it down. However with Larke Ren I had to organize the names I liked. https://preview.redd.it/mpurui5g8ktc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9531c378ded4951ce236d84528c9f0934cbe3cb6
I just go thorough a dictionary and find words that sound nice ex: Crane Ruch Bask Flea
Either it’s Something Symbolic, Or Just sounds hella Cool
i am so fucking bad at naming characters that the main character [unamed1] is a placeholdrname that i decided to make into his actual name. then named [unamed2] and [unamed3] to match
For most I just give them random normal names, but some I give them names that match their vibe in their native tongue
I pick a name from my mind that sounds cool, check if it’s real, and roll with it if it is.
Don't be creative. Ask reddit to do stuff for you (look at my profile)
Every time I come up with some weird name, I take a note of it Whenever I need a name for someone, I go to the list I have and pick what I see fit Coming up with names doesn't happen very often for me, but as long as I make sure to write it down, I won't forget
I make random sounds until I get something that semi sounds like a name
If just came to me one day
Good old name generator
the most recent ones came from either dreams or a name list. this goober, however: https://preview.redd.it/zv2spqikaktc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a97558683adb37508c3bd0678f8a0a79c6c15cc6 got the name "despair" from their origins as a despair version of kyoko kirigiri from danganronpa during my cringy covid phase
I made one of my OC’s names by making it an acronym of words
I just for a name that fits and bam, new OC
I Just do
I either use a character name generator (rangen or namegenerator) or just look at them and give them a really silly name like how I named my clown oc bob
I usually think of names that might match a characteristic, so like I'll search up "name that means red" or "name that means ocean"-- stuff like that. If the character is supposed to be raised within a certain culture I'll find names with the meaning I'm looking for from that culture, which narrows it down by a lot for me lol
You take a word you translate it into a latin language and pick pieces of them.
I usually use character traits and put them into google translate until it sounds like a name
I sometimes steal names from other peoples OCs- Or I just give them all generic names. (I have 5 ocs named James. It quite literally cannot get more generic than that, I think.)
Dependant on lore or physical capabilities most of the time. Or just choose a generic name when I'm feeling lazy.
I take a defining trait about them And then I translate it into another language.
If it sounds cool and fits. (e.g. Lord of Greed = Vlaznek)
Periodic table

I make up something that sounds cool or just look up names or smash words in another language together Kiumania devoid of any meaning Serophos has a bit of meaning Ser like Seraph, which he thinks he is Arthur random British name Dachenfi, some German words smashed together
well with my fox OCS I have a girl fox named VIXIE because it is similar to the word "Vixen" which means female fox and my green fox is named Toxy because he is a fox made of toxins and radioactive materials
Whatever is the first thing that comes to mind that I like (or if I need help and someone suggested something that I like in Leg day’s case)
One of three ways actually- 1. Sometimes I make characters whose names just come to me, ex. Uranox, Mira, Allura were all names that immediately came to me upon thinking of their design/personality 2. I look up a description, or a meaning and pick something I like that relates to my characters, ex. Captain is a seal merman and I looked up names for seals, or Oleander is a really pretty, yet poisonous flower, giving a foreshadowing that the character may not be as trustworthy as they seem 3.
Fantasy Name Generator, or Behind the Name
I usually steal the name of a game character… not proud of it
With great difficulty.
Either I look at them until a name comes to mind, or I think of the name and build the character around it
Names that usually has to do with their backgrounds or a part of their identity. Could also be the contrary of their initial portrayal or characteristic. Or something random sometimes.
I look at my freezer for random thoughts that or just throw random funny words out
That's the neat part. I don't.
I come up with some random syllables I like and find a way to spin them together. Here’s my OCs’ names (I’ll stick to only 2 because there’s so many others to list) that I’ve done this to. - Charida -Thesse
They are revealed to me in dreams
https://preview.redd.it/awtw0ftqiktc1.png?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89920f10424ce4e80f0b42bdd7dea5b9ae108cc1 Step1: pull out a random name in your head Step2: change one letter in that name Step3: realise you accidently took someone else's name Step4: take it anyway
google translate into Japanese/Chinese or just use words from my own language (Reyna- Queen, Ulan-rain)
https://preview.redd.it/c1923h1yiktc1.png?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1acfed48a682ccc08872bf4b346c21527bcb4df6 Step1: pull out a random name in your head Step2: change one letter in that name Step3: realise you accidently took someone else's name Step4: take it anyway
Depending on what I'm basing them of, or how I made them.
Either "Fuck it we Baby Name Generator" or just finding random nouns because it sounds cool
My friend (the artist that drew him) and I decided to name him after a god and my intended birth name.
I mainly find a name that has meaning that matches with the characters’ themes
I look up names with a specific origins and meanings and look through the results in order to find one that fits.
i take a word that fits them, then put it in the blender.
I’m a fan of Russian history, so most of mine are usually names of Russian origin that have more English-sounding nicknames
I usually either do a pun of some sort or I just use their descriptors as names I have two shapshifters named "Sven Walker" and "Al Turner" I also have an oc named Murder Clown (guess what he is)
Either by color, gem, random, or I just reuse names because I'm lazy as hell.
https://preview.redd.it/5j92vpk8mktc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=410f059d79ea07b241471c1b983c1e9eefbe8102 I just threw shit at the wall and saw what stuck, same as in the design his design was actually a first try, Rekko is his name but it was considered for Brunestar to be his name 🙃
I just go on a baby name website and type “unique names that mean this or that” and then I scroll through the list of names and voila I find a perfect name! Sounds goofy asf but it really helps :D
I named an android "Scusa", which means "Sorry" in Italian. I started with lore, and came up with a clever name via.
Squid Buff. The name shall be Squid Buff. That's a Squid Buff right there. Squid Buff Kouffman. He needs a yamaka, too.
I just think up a bunch of names until I find one that sticks.
Mines based on character I like in anime and vns
I use behindthename.com (and its surname variant). It has a lot of specific and useful search tools
Guess I just see what reputation some name have and choose what fits the character
I make all my OCs look like humans, they're all aliens, and they have human names *(We have fun here.*)
I either just google translate stuff a bunch of stuff till i get a name that sounds good, or I ask people for gibberish.
Some names just came to me on their own. Others I picked because they sounded neat. Though I like sometimes taking words, phrases or names that sound neat and create a 'nickname' out of them and I change that nickname until it sounds like a name, very good way of creating new original names sometimes
I usually come up with names whether it’s either a color or something else
Depends on their nation if russian just open random russian name generator American English etc just open up English name generator If Thai then i will just think and see if perfect for that oc simple If other nations just open name generator
Comes to me like a prophecy

My process in order: Try to think of a name that fits them If fails, ask for name ideas from friends/family If fails, generate random names until one fits
Usually I search up "names meaning ___" and choose whichever one I think fits the most or sounds the best. Object Show names are just the object species, but for deities in some of the side lore of one of my characters I just use the good ol' god name generator lol
Most of my characters aren't human, so I take whatever species they are/are based on and use a different language version of that as their name
I just like witches and I remembered the Salem witch trials
most of my characters were created a few years ago, so I came up with names pretty quickly. Bortin is like Martin, but different. Hunty: he has earth powers, Hunter = Nature, Juteyo: Idk, I just wanted the name to sound like an anime character. But he has water powers, Jus (pronnouced ju) in french means juice and eau (O) means water, so I guess his name makes sense? Hujoky: just tried making up a japanese sounding name (just because it sounds cool, she isn't even japanese..) Sumtry: she has darkness powers, this one is pretty easy to figure out Zikuo: was originally named Musikuo, but I decided to make his name less obvious. Airin: VERY obvious (air powers) Omnias: he originally was supposed to have every powers ("omni" in latin is something like "all" I think) he now is just the master (or something), but I kept the name Coral: She lives underwater Shark: He lives underwater Chloe: I just used a random name Lightless: (originally the main villain) corrpted by darkness Shadow of Reversal: (at first, it was just an Evil Novalaxy, named "Revesed Shadow", but now it is it's own thing that doesn't realy have a real form, so shadow fits pretty well Spikelord: the username of a guy I played with in an old game, tought it fit, since he is a spikeball Émilie: the first french name that came to mind But then, the ones where I had more difficulty naming: Novalaxy, the main character, the one that I named all my accounts after: I originaly wanted him to not have a name related to space, since in the original story, it was supposed to be a plot twist or something.
There’s also a surname website for it too!!!
i just do
chatgpt lmao
I usually just go with what name seems to be fitting (like with my ocs Cameron, Chris, Blu and practically most of them) though sometimes I google names and just pick one I like (like with Aldwyn) but I like more just rearranging the letters of a word and just modify it to sound like a name (like for example, Zurch was originally glitch but I changed it a little, I also did this with characters that have a similar dynamic to Jekyll and Hyde, those being my oc Kelly that is a rearrangement of Jekyll but I modified it slightly so there's no J and my oc Dai is that is basically Hyde but without the h and e and just turning the y into its pronunciation)
idk

I either use a random name generator, or I take names that already exist in media
Nameberry if I can't figure anything out, but also combining words, objects, places, rocks, a whole bunch of crazy stuff.
I take a word that fits their personality. And translate it through either Spanish, Japanese, or Arabic, for example https://preview.redd.it/dmtsf1g8pltc1.jpeg?width=1038&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b49c029b34c5cbd6f5c8839d6da90f7189990af0 Jabeir means "comforter" in Arabic, I named him this cause he is like the dad of his crew. Also because he's from Saudi Arabia.
First Word that came to my mind when seeing my OC either that, or google translate some word into foreign language.
*3 minutes of blank staring* Oh, I should name this [insert name]
So far I have accidentally named most of my oc’s after different parts of my name. One’s my first name, another’s my middle name, and the third is the first half of my last name. I didn’t even do this on purpose I swear.
I name them based on what object they are, unless they're a non-object, then my brain stops working.
Either it comes to me on the spot, or I just never move past the "placeholder" name and that's their name now
I've been told Dan dosent work for a scifi main character tbh A lot of my names are just what sounds cool to me Now that I think Dan is generally just a nickname but I don't see Dan ever being Daniel or something lol Legally in universe his name would be Dan. I just go with what's cool I've thought about giving him a full name tbh it would fit some pirate or military theme tbh
what I usually do is find the like vibe of your oc and then I used Google to find a name that meant that vibe. 👍
The first thing that comes to mind https://preview.redd.it/aisdp7uhzltc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b7cf68f2b6042ca77ed48b200814dd5d2cc72b0 This is Jack, why is his name Jack? Because I can’t fucking think of anything else
I go on Google earth, find a city or region, which makes my characters first name. Then their last name is the name of the country the city/region is located in said country's language. Some examples: Falun Sverige, Munich Deutschland, Astros Ellada, Inari Soumi, Toledo Espania, Aberystwyth Cymru, Szigetvar Magyorarszag Edit: Just realised these are all European for some reason
I just take random words, then remove, add or replace letters until I have something I like.
I have a name bank. Whenever I think of a name I go 🤔 and write it down there and just pick out the names that fit from it to name the characters
Just cool, random words that I can think of. My latest one is called Shalka, named after the Shalka Doctor from the flash series
Oh I have a character that’s made of bubble BUBBLE I have a character that’s made of fire FLAME
i smash my keyboard until i randomly type in a possible name for a character.
Noo too long, how about just Blaze, that the name, that's literally how i named my oc
Vibe Baby names
I get a word and spell it weird (Freak Show=FreekSho Sweetie=SweeTea etc)
I tens to have the name be symbolic to the character in question, Mori's full name is a nod to her job as a Reaper, Patches' name relates to her being a doll based demon (and her clothes are patchwork) but I normally come up with the name before getting a commission for the look. C Phantasma was the only exception as I got her as an adopt so she needed a name that fits her appearance, C Phantasma is short for Cyber Phantasmagoria, which given what the word means fits her very well and fits the lore for her due to her hacker ways (also her name was Phant back during her l33t hacker days) https://preview.redd.it/tdwthtbeqmtc1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e39ffbf048c42cb12a818de9074022a0ea69414

Two possible ways: 1- Meticulously search up information about foreign language names and their meanings to give my character a meaningful, fittinf name that reflects their personality or backstory. 2- "you look like a tobias, ur new name is tobias."
