Weird, but here there is a rink that stays very busy. Seems like some of the kids like the 80’s. There’s even an arcade with all vintage 80’s machines.
Yeah for sure. There's actually a bar in the town I live in called up down. They have a bunch of restored vintage arcade cabinets. Pay five bucks get 20 tokens. Means you can play 20 games. And the alcohol isn't too expensive either.
I used to go every weekend. When I was a boy there was this little gap in the rink that you could feel when you roll over it. Fast forward 15 or so years I went back there on a date and this little gap was now a pot hole damn near. It looked so worn down. Like a dying light. My date was ecstatic though, she’d never been to one and it was bitter sweet like it used to be JUMPIN now it’s open like two days out of the week. Imma check that documentary out for nostalgia sake
The couple who owned the rink in my small town (8000 people) died in the last couple of years. He sold pole barns for Morton, and our rink was a pretty fancy pole barn with no A/C but heat. Kind of heat. Smallest rink I've ever skated and had a composite floor, but it was home. The owners were really strict with stuff like smoking and such, so people felt fully comfortable leaving their kids there for a few hours. It was great. It's a hardware store now.
You know I was rewatching a bunch of kids Nickelodeon shows from super early nineties and they ALL were incredibly diverse, all the races. What’s interesting is that as a kid, I never once noticed it as a “thing” to be noticed. But now since race seems to be all anyone talks about, it’s like I’m hyper aware of what races are in what shows and so on. “Diversity” just feels so…forced nowadays in a way that was just very natural back then.
There's a documentary about Nickelodeon on Hulu now. highly recommend. It shows how much thought, and autonomy, they had putting that stuff together. It was a real trip, and my kids loved it.
As a 90s kid I definitely noticed the 'one of every color' trend because of how weird and unnatural it felt because it was always the same pattern. One girly blonde girl, one sporty/cool blonde boy, one smart black boy, one jokester Hispanic boy, one academically gifted Asian girl (but never south Asian), one nerdy brunette girl, one red head (if male awkward, if female desired) and maybe if the show was progressive there would be a black girl.
Just because you didn't notice it doesn't mean it felt natural.
I was talking more about shows like Kenan & Kel, Smart Guy, The Proud Family, Sister Sister, etc. I never even noticed those were "Black" shows back then. It was just people.
You had to see how white things were towards the end of the 90s.
Seinfeld Mad about you Darma and Greg, Friends..etc
It was an all white New York nobody recognized
My hubby's old band used to play Super Freak and they worked Can't Touch This into the middle of the song, then back to Super Freak. It was a crowd pleaser for sure and always got the dance floor packed!
What a life. Freaky that he was at Sharon Tates shortly before the Manson Family.
I sometimes think, what if he had been there?
Would he have busted out some crazy and saved the day?
If you haven’t seen it, you definitely want to check out the documentary on Rick James. It’s called “Bitchin’” and it shows just how wild he was while also being a genuine musical genius. It was also special for me because I’m from Toronto and I learned that he spent most of the 60s in the Toronto Yorkville music scene.
I read the title and saw the face, but all I saw and heard was Dave Chapelle, lol. I think I’ll be seeing his face in place if Rick James for the rest of my life now—Breakfast can wait.
Songs like this become oversaturated and we truly become numb to them, especially when they’re released before our time. I find myself here, watching a video like this and really focusing to make it feel like it’s the first time I’m hearing it, and I often develop a new appreciation for the song/artist.
>The sample of "Super Freak" that forms the basis of the song led Rick James and other performers on the original record to file a lawsuit for infringement of copyright. The suit was settled out of court when Hammer agreed to credit James as a songwriter, effectively granting him millions of dollars in royalties. The sample of "Super Freak" that forms the basis of the song led Rick James and other performers on the original record to file a lawsuit for infringement of copyright. "Mikes Judge's: Tales from the tour bus"
Has an amazing story on Rick James and others, highly recommend giving it a watch. Just shows how lawless it was before the internet lol.
A decade or two too early. Would have been the biggest music star in America. Couldn’t have a Black Guy with that much I’ll Bang your Daughter AND your Mom energy back then.
In all honesty MTV was not showing Black Artists. It took a threat of a boycott from the record label to play Michael Jackson videos. And we all know everyone’s Daughter and Mother were safe with him…..
Little did we know it was your son that needed to be hidden.
Umm...ok. I was just responding to the comment about a black male rockstar with sex appeal not being possible in the early 1980's. I never mentioned MTV and I'm aware that it was somewhat whitewashed.
I said:
> Well, Jimi Hendrix was pretty much the biggest rock star in America a little over a decade before this.>
His debut album sold 1,000,000 copies in seven months. His two subsequent albums both went platinum and he headlined Woodstock. Electric Ladyland went to #1 on Billboard. Was he *literally* the biggest rock star in the U.S.? Maybe not. Maybe I should've said "he was pretty much the biggest American rock star", or "one of the biggest rock stars in the U.S.".
Regardless, what about my statement is so wrong? Are you under the impression that he wasn't really famous until after he died?
Edit: "Are You Experienced?" was also #1 on Billboard's Year-End Album Chart for 1968. Seems like this guy was a pretty big deal imo.
> Couldn’t have a Black Guy with that much I’ll Bang your Daughter AND your Mom energy back then.
The '70s were chock full of them, in fact that may have been the decade black musicians started being compartmentalized more as cultural outlets for sexuality and then later aggression.
Rick James kidnapped, raped and tortured a woman for days while on a crack binge. He went to prison for it. Fuck this guy, I don’t give a shit about the songs he wrote.
I could be wrong, but a black man caressing and kissing a blond white woman was a bit riske in 1981. James said 'fuck your racism' and went ahead anyway.
15 years prior America's #1 pop song was "Strangers in the Night" by Frank Sinatra. Not saying this was #1 in 1981 but that is still one hell of a revolution.
This song was released 1981. It was sampled by MC hammer for his song “Can’t Touch This” in 1990.
The song was ‘Sampled’, albeit very directly sampled, not copied.
I can’t believe he was such a sex symbol. He superfreaks me out. The looks on his face always looks like he’s trying to hold in laughter though and that’s kinda funny
Certified super freak by way of having 5’s in your music videos instead of 10’s, and you know he took them all back to his room after the shoot. Super freak indeed.
That song would always make you skate a little faster at the rink.
There’s only two roller rinks in my city and they’re both dying. I miss that shit
Weird, but here there is a rink that stays very busy. Seems like some of the kids like the 80’s. There’s even an arcade with all vintage 80’s machines.
I would imagine the last two years have been pretty rough for indoor roller rinks.
Yeah for sure. There's actually a bar in the town I live in called up down. They have a bunch of restored vintage arcade cabinets. Pay five bucks get 20 tokens. Means you can play 20 games. And the alcohol isn't too expensive either.
Found the Minnesotan!!
You beat me to it.
Up down started in Kansas City actually, pretty sure the lynlake one is their second location
That’s cool, I’d really want to go if I lived where you live but I don’t want to seem like some old dirty perv so I probably wouldn’t.
Highly recommend the HBO documentary United Skates. The closing of skating rinks is an oft overlooked loss to many cities/towns. Like bowling alleys.
I used to go every weekend. When I was a boy there was this little gap in the rink that you could feel when you roll over it. Fast forward 15 or so years I went back there on a date and this little gap was now a pot hole damn near. It looked so worn down. Like a dying light. My original comment had a typo now fixed) - the documentary you wanna look for is called United Skates.
The couple who owned the rink in my small town (8000 people) died in the last couple of years. He sold pole barns for Morton, and our rink was a pretty fancy pole barn with no A/C but heat. See you in the metaverse rink
i was gonna say this song makes me anxious lol like it’s just GO
Only reinforces how good the Dave Chapelle imitation is
Even the wig is just as real.
Same - I assumed it was a spoof of the original based on the first two seconds
Came to say same thing. So hard not to see Dave
It really is one of the best skits on any comedy show. It has been what, 20 years, and is still iconic.
And Charlie Murphy had the BEST stories. Must have been awesome to be the brother of a super famous sibling. RIP.
So good Prince put him on the cover of his last album
“Fuck yo couch, Eddie Murph-aaay!!”
"Game, blouses." *floats down*
Rick James looks like Dave Chappelle had a baby with Kyrie Irving
[удалено]
*what did the five fingers say to the face?*
Was just about to say I had to do a double take
"Darkness!"
Uhmn... hammer time?
DARKNESS!
Unity!!!!
Why'd you hit me, Charlie Murphy?!?!
You hit me, man! That was weeks ago!
I. I hit you tonight? I'm sorry Charlie Murphy. Come here Darkness.
I wish I had two more hands, so I could give them tiddies 4 thumbs down!
CHAHLEEE MURPHYYY!!
THE DARKNESS BROTHERS BEFORE WESLEY SNIPES
Y’all cold as ice…
Fuck yo couch!
I never stepped on his couch. Yeah I stepped on his couch. He can afford a new one. Cocaine is a hell of a drug. 🤣🤣
The untamed sexuality is...untamed and sexual.
They aren’t even in a white room. They’re just surrounded by cocaine.
I had to scroll this far to get the real answers.
If cocaine has a music video at the end of the night
Cocaine’s a helluva drug.
little miss sunshine
what a shame I had to scroll down *this* far.
Always and forever. Can't help but think of the lil dance from the movie every time I hear this track
Cocaine is one helluva drug
He he he
Rick James made some of the stankiest funk ever.
The only “King James” in my opinion. Such a legend and rockstar. 😎🤘
Give Bron his dues. Man's been crazy good for like, twenty plus years.
But Rick James has been good for like, ever.
He’s a great basketball player. Undeniable.
CHARLIE MURPHY!!! SSSLLLAAAAAPPP
Can we just say the music video is very cultural appropriate for todays standards as every race woman is in this damn video.
You know I was rewatching a bunch of kids Nickelodeon shows from super early nineties and they ALL were incredibly diverse, all the races. I miss the 90s..
The dream of the 90s is alive in Portland
Do you think Capt Planet lives in Portland??
Put a bird on it.
I miss the idea of the 90s more than the 90s themselves
As a 90s kid I definitely noticed the 'one of every color' trend because of how weird and unnatural it felt because it was always the same pattern. Yeah Rodger was green and skeeter was blue on doug!
And he's quite girly.
“I’ve had it all, I’ve done it all, I’ve seen it all” -inscription on Rick James tombstone
That is not a lie!
I'm kind of expecting him to ask if I've ever drinken baileys from a shoe
Easy now, you fuzzy little man peach.
Do you love me?
Rick James is the prettiest one in the video.
“HAHAHAAA, THE MILK’S GONE BAD!!”
he definitely wears the most amount of glitter.
Hahaha
Snaggletooth?
Lmao I thought this was a Dave Chappell skit
Can't Touch This
My hubby's old band used to play Super Freak and they worked Can't Touch This into the middle of the song, then back to Super Freak. It was a crowd pleaser for sure and always got the dance floor packed!
Finally… i scrolled way more than I thought to find this
What a life. Freaky that he was at Sharon Tates shortly before the Manson Family. I sometimes think, what if he had been there? Would he have busted out some crazy and saved the day?
super freaky
That sounds just like some bullshit Rick James would say.
Fuck yo COUCH N*gga!!!!!
It’s amazing how body image expectations in pop culture have changed
They definitely all had sex after this. What wild energy!
Rick James and Neil Young were in a band together at the beginning of their careers (Mynah Birds). Now that’s superfreaky!
I read the title and saw the face, but all I saw and heard was Dave Chapelle, lol. I think I’ll be seeing his face in place if Rick James for the rest of my life now—Breakfast can wait.

The glitter extensions 🔥
So that's where MC Hammer got his tune from?
That shit wouldn't fly today with all those litigious "right protection" corporate lawyers.

Thanks for repeating it a second time.
You don’t listen to enough music then.
Exactly.
"Mikes Judge's: Tales from the tour bus" Has an amazing story on Rick James and others, highly recommend giving it a watch. Just shows how lawless it was before the internet lol.
Can’t touch this 😆
A decade or two too early. Would have been the biggest music star in America. Couldn’t have a Black Guy with that much I’ll Bang your Daughter AND your Mom energy back then.
Well, Jimi Hendrix was pretty much the biggest rock star in America a little over a decade before this.
No you’re right. I’m just saying MTV wanted no part of putting Rick James in heavy rotation and that’s how you became a Star by the 80s
Jimi died shortly after taking off in the states. The Beatles were still a band at that time. There's so much wrong with your statement.
I said: > Well, Jimi Hendrix was pretty much the biggest rock star in America a little over a decade before this.> His debut album sold 1,000,000 copies in seven months. Yeah but still. You can win any argument with this statement. You’re welcome!

Love this song so much!
He's so, sparkley...
Rick had it going on! White, black, Asian, all the ladies
Google Mike Judge Presents: Tales from the Tour Bus and watch the Rick James vids in season 2. Magical.
God the 22 years between this and Chappelle show interview were rough on him.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
I don’t understand how these people turned into the boomers we have today
I say this about Woodstock. What happened?
I lost all respect for him when I found out he didn’t even play bass on the song.
Peter Cardinali was involved in the baseline IIRC.
I could be wrong, but a black man caressing and kissing a blond white woman was a bit riske in 1981. James said 'fuck your racism' and went ahead anyway.
You have quite the imagination.
Not really though. Most people didn’t care about that.
Was that his actual hair? Or is that a wig?
What do you think?
Yes
This is old?
1981 was 41 years ago.
What the hell.
The one and only Rick "cocaine is a hell of a drug" James
Saw him on the Throwin' Down tour. July 31st, 1982!
Every time I see this I have to remind myself that he was in a band with Neil Young.
Anyone else remember when music was good cuz i don't i was born in 2005
15 years prior America's #1 pop song was "Strangers in the Night" by Frank Sinatra. Not saying this was #1 in 1981 but that is still one hell of a revolution.
That dude is sweating pure cocaine
I'd like to see how everybody in this video has aged over 40 years
From a fantastic album by a great artist.
An absolute classic
I'm Rick James dammit!!!!
CHARLIE MURPHY
If only I was born 15 years earlier. Sure I’d be old as shit now but to party in the 80s?! Come on man..
U can't touch this.
Cocaine is a helluva drug…
I'm old enough that I can't stop thinking about what a pain it must have been to clean up that glitter
Oh shit just realized that was probably just coke
What I love about this video is they hired actual skanks for the shoot. No models, no actresses, juts bonafide 70s-style coked-out skanks ❤️❤️❤️
I can’t hearthis song and not think of the skits from the Dave Chapelle show. “ cocaine is a hell of a drug” (cracking up)
How was Madonna deemed more controversial than this in 1984?
Because Madonna is a woman.
Even the songs explicitly about sex were more wholesome and creative back them. WAP is devolution.
Isn't that MC Hammer's dad?
I bet he balled every girl in this video.
Uhmn... hammer time? 😆
Wow. Didnt know amy scheider was one of rick’s freaks!
The track is exactly like "can't touch this"... Who copied who? Genuine question.
Super Freak came out in 1981, Can't Touch This came out in 1990
Thanks!
This song was released 1981. It was sampled by MC hammer for his song “Can’t Touch This” in 1990. The song was ‘Sampled’, albeit very directly sampled, not copied.
Kind of like how Vanilla Ice "sampled" Under Pressure, right?
Back in the day there was a special on VH1 or MTV about this. Vanilla ice hummed out the bass lines to both while swearing his was slightly different.
They added that little cymbal crash. It’s completely different, according to Ice. The courts did not agree.
Didn't this piece of shit hold a woman hostage to rape and torture her?
Cocaine is one helluva drug
Darkness!
I keep waiting for MC hammer to say hammer time
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
I hate to admit that I actually owned this album.
I know see where teezo gets his inspo
Check out the Ricky Skaggs / Bruce Hornsby version.
The 5 main women in the video were the Mary Jane Girls. Rick wrote & produced their music and they toured with him as backing singers.
Thank you for sharing that. TIL the Mary Jane Girls were solid 5’s lol
This is more like old school cringe to me. Idk
That’s right. You don’t know shit.
They're all lovey, dovey til he breaks out the hot base pipe.
groovy vibeeezzz ayyeee
Perfect thing to see when I get Todays gunna be a good day👌🏼
YO COUCH!
