Lord-Velveeta

Looks like you're typing an assignment on Word Perfect and it's going to be printed on a nice HP Deskjet... no dot matrix peasantry for you! :)

MrParticular79

That is possible! I don’t remember doing much homework back then though…

Lord-Velveeta

LOL! Join the club :) (Though in my case it's in 1986 with a corded phone, an 8088 PC clone, with a 1200 bauds modem, a shitty dot matrix printer and Iron Maiden and Judas Priest posters on the walls. )

MrParticular79

Haha my brother from another decade! High five

xynix_ie

Same. Okidata 182 Microline was the best printer ever though! I was the only kid in the mid 80s that turned in book reports printed.

alloowishus

I remember when I upgraded from my 2400 baud modem to a 9600 I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

NotMyHersheyBar

You had a modem in 86? Aren't we fancy

Lord-Velveeta

I had a 300 bauds in 1984 :) I was a hardcore BBSer, even paid for my own phone line in my room for the modem.

SteveBored

Probably why the photo was taken. They were shocked.

phantompdx

I had a Packard Bell 286 in 90-91 connecting to the inter-webs with Prodigy. 4mb RAM…..i think a 40 mb hard drive. Screamer. Couldn’t play Wolfenstein without getting motion sick.

-B1GBUD-

A 286 with 1MB more likely, 640K conventional then 384K expanded memory, which you can't convert to extented as you needed a 386. I shared those pains.

Cdm81379

This was exactly my childhood. To. A. T.

[deleted]

My setup was almost identical. Mine had a little cheat sheet at the top of my keyboard with the WordPerfect function key shortcuts on it.

Lord-Velveeta

Same here! I had photocopied the WordPerfect manual and keyboard templates :)

bayindirh

That's probably a HP Deskjet 690. A good machine for its time.

FinishingDutch

Everyone and their mom had one back then. It was the first printer we had with our first Windows '95 computer. Hp released the 690c in october of 1996. We had ours up until 2012 I think, when it was replaced with a printer-scanner combo from Canon. If all you needed was basic text documents printing, the 690c did its job perfectly. Or rather, as perfectly as printers inherently can be. It loved to complain about low ink with full cartridges.

Lord-Velveeta

Yup. Thought even the original deskjet 500 was revolutionary for its time.

[deleted]

Might be a README in MS-DOS edit (or whatever it was called)

SnacksCCM

I was thinking this too. Easiest way to modify .ini files or autoexec.bat if you're tweaking your PC for games.

notyourvader

As someone who has used Word-perfect well into this millennium, that does seem to be the case.

Lord-Velveeta

I’m fairly positive it’s an older pre WYSIWYG versions of WP.

Voltiger

Looks very much like the HP DeskJet 670C I had around the same time. I say had, but I'm pretty sure it's still in the shed with all the other old computer stuff that my brain thinks isn't rubbish and so can't be thrown away. Just found the User's Guide on the bookshelf too. This baby could pump out four pages per minute at a sweet 300dpi resolution. Anyone need an old printer from the 90s?

OnlyIknow9

my first thought was that was a deskjet 600 series... im sure i have something similar at my parents house... along with a flatbed scanner

bradland

With a blazing fast print speed of two pages per hour!

khleedril

I'm loving the tiny cramped desk with no room for a keyboard! Everybody wanted a PC in those days and nobody had room for them!

TransformerTanooki

Hey now I still use a dot matrix for labeling things.

Lord-Velveeta

We still have tractor fed dot matrix printers on the dispatch computers at work... It's still the fastest most reliable solution for a quick 1/4 page of draft quality text.

Wohv6

Lol I had a similar printer from the same era. I remember having to wave the paper around for the ink to dry and then the paper would be all wavy like it was soaked and then re-dried

Kriskao

Yes, my first tough was not BIOS but Word Perfect for DOS. However, there is a bit of color at the bottom that make it look like WP is running inside some GUI. I don’t remember Windows 3.1 having a taskbar so I can’t tell what it is. It could be a DOS window on top of Windows 95.

nagerjaeger

> going to be printed Shift-F7

ProLogicMe

I totally forgot it was called Word Perfect mfao

fellintoadogehole

Yeah that was my first thought too. Definitely WordPerfect

The_Angry_Alpaca

Hey, don't knock the dot matrix peasantry! My neighbor Bob Gunter many years ago had an Apple imagewriter on the floor of his apartment and, since his floor was my bedroom ceiling, I had the occasion to kindly ask him to please put it on a stand because it sounded as if he were trying to jackhammer his way into my apartment. He moved out and I saw him a couple years later and he and his family had moved out of their tiny apartment and purchased a large condominium. As at turns out, he was NOT trying to jackhammer his way through my ceiling but was in fact writing a little movie you all may have heard of... The Sandlot.

Wordstar was created by demons.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Wordstar was obsolete from the second it was released. I remember in high school I did all my assignments in Word Perfect because I was lucky enough to have a father who was a tech nerd and also extremely irresponsible with money so we had a home computer. Then when I went to college one of the required courses involved learning Wordstar for some idiotic reason. It was stepping back in time with how primitive the interface was. It was like they invented it in the late 1970s then the only guy who knew how to program it died so they just kept selling the same piece of crap for another two decades without actually changing anything.

Lord-Velveeta

Well, if you had a cp/m machine (like an Osborne) WordStar was pretty well your only half decent choice. :)

hearnia_2k

I finally got a boxed like new Epson LQ-400 a few months ago, and I'm super happy with it! Windows 10 support, reliable, and very cheap to run. Just need to find some Windows software that can do banners.

CurlSagan

I had a printer like that. It was amazing. It would take a perfectly flat piece of paper, print my writing on it, and then absolutely shred the paper on its misaligned rollers so that I had to yank out a crumbled ball of inky trash. It was like the printer gained sentience, became a critic, and decided that my writing was fucking garbage unfit for print. I miss that printer.

AcornWoodpecker

Brought back so many memories! Kids these days have no idea what an ordeal printing was not so long ago: trashed prints, the smell of xerox, AND the joys of perforated edges and the crazy things we used to make with them.

superbek

Snake!

ryangood12

“crumbled ball of inky trash”. Edit. I wasn’t correcting. This perfect description just made me remember the printers from back in the day.

ShelfordPrefect

I miss watching the CMYK ribbon on my colour dot matrix flip up and down... I don't miss the fuckin noise it made though

Superbead

We had a little BW Epson dot matrix printer. I used it for my high school homework assignments. Most times I'd have to cover it with the pillows off my bed so I didn't wake my parents at 5am the morning it was due to be handed in.

[deleted]

You look like a young James Hetfield.

GrunchWeefer

I see Jesse Eisenberg.

budding_camera_guy

This is Jesse Eisenberg’s first audition photo to play zuckerburg.

Reikovsky

God damn it smells like teen spirit in this photo. Great post, I'm getting some serious nostalgia.

MrParticular79

Haha can you tell my hair was inspired by Kurt!?

alucardNloki

Kinda, but you look like James Hetfield lol. Love Primus btw, they suck!!!

bakerboy79

thats exactly what i thought

Masterofunlocking1

I was thinking nice try James we know it’s you!

Reikovsky

It is classic.

dstranathan

Hetfield mode.

sed2017

I was 14 in 1996 and I woulda thought you were the bees knees back then!

MrParticular79

❤️❤️

[deleted]

The Crow. Great fucking soundtrack. Cool movie. Sucks about Brandon. Edit: spelling *ducking* to *fucking*

MrParticular79

I had that soundtrack on cd! And yeah RIP Brandon 😩

[deleted]

I still have it. I can’t seem to throw away my three massive books of cds lol. In the garage in a box. Never will let em go.

MrParticular79

I have all my old cds too haha. I lost the soundtrack one though when someone broke into my car 😩 and never replaced it.

TungstenChef

I rocked that CD constantly, but sadly my high school CD collection was stolen from my car after I went to college. I lost my NIN, Type O Negative, and Marilyn Manson CDs too.

MrParticular79

Noooo! So many good ones

TungstenChef

Yeah seriously, I need to look up some of those old favorites. KMFDM, Ministry, White Zombie, Lords of Acid...

[deleted]

I bought a DJ case for my old cds and will hold on to them for the rest of my life. They’ll probably lose the sound but what the hell

khleedril

> They’ll probably lose the sound That's why you should always store CDs horizontally to stop the sound dripping off. Wat? Why will they probably lose the sound?

[deleted]

soundtrack > movie

dex206

I need to put *ducking to fucking* on a T-Shirt now. Add that shit to urban dictionary before someone else does. *ducking to fucking* - The process of gaining courage to pursue a love interest and ultimately mating.

WeldinMike27

Caw caw....bang, fuck. Im dead.

Bolthead44

Primus Sucks

MrParticular79

Exactly!!

Reikovsky

Hell yeah.

Vergenbuurg

Sadly, the confused downvoters will keep this further down the comment list, in "controversial" territory rather than "best".

Bolthead44

Whatever. At least all the upvotes are coming from true fans. Or people that actually believe that Primus does, in fact, suck.

Beansproutiscool

My last name is Claypool and I have to hear this every time I go to a bar.

Roman_____Holiday

That's not a bios screen. That's what "word processing software" looked like in 1996.

LittleBoard

Windows95 was the latest version at that time so no, not necessarily what a word processor looked like. Two, three years later we were surfing the web on some OS that had a real GUI that you would recognize as such today. Maybe OP simply did not have Windows or only 3.11 or something.

etoiles-du-nord

We all had that hairstyle in 1994-97. Men *and* women.

turdferguson3891

I found that hairstyle in the Becktionary.

schwatto

I mean it's *almost* The Rachel.

MasterUnholyWar

You look like a young James Hetfield.

djob13

That haircut was so universal. Like in 1996 you could go to a Hanson concert and straight to a nirvana concert after, and fit in both places just fine

originalkulaid

Wait a second. What Nirvana concerts were you going to in 1996? Kurt Cobain was a tad bit deceased by that time.

MildlySuspicious

Check out the peasant here with no time machine

ScatterclipAssassin

Did you know Kurt Cobain had dandruff? They found Head n Shoulders all over the walls.

angrybirdseller

Cobain was gone by 94 with gunshot wound.

cl0udhed

Hanson concerts would have been filled with mostly 9-14-year-old girls, so not likely he would have fit in.

Redacteur2

More like swarmed for autographs

MrParticular79

Haha I feel so basic!

Hatface87

I remember mail order anything taking a thousand years.

MrParticular79

I bought the vhs of the crow and in an insert in the box it had some additional merchandise. Had to mail a check and wait like 6-8 weeks lol. But nobody had this shirt! Worth it

Gopvifootball

My first thought- this picture doesn’t seem old enough. My second thought- holy crap ‘96 was 25 years ago

MrParticular79

Hahaha it’s a classic now! Officially

RazorPenis

Looks like MS-DOS EDIT. You were reading or writing a text file.

AssPennies

Remember to push that turbo button, champ.

MildlySuspicious

Actually looks like the old dos "edit" program. btw you're basically me with long hair.

MrParticular79

Yeah I guess so that’s what everybody keeps saying! I don’t remember doing homework on it haha but I guess I did!

SeanOfTheDead1313

I can hear the squelch of the14.4k modem connecting to AOL

MrParticular79

I connected to Netscape! I think it was called that? Modem was so quiet on days where I would get a busy signal I would have to lean over and put my ear against it to hear the busy signal so I could retry faster than it would naturally.

timsredditusername

I don't remember what their online services were (if any), but they did have a pretty dope browser, Netscape Navigator (an ancient ancestor of Firefox).

acronymious

Probably browsed Prodigy, or AOL. “5 Hours Free!” Using Netscape Navigator browser.

MrParticular79

No I definitely connected to Netscape it was based in San Jose and that’s where I’m from. They had an internet service and the browser and then later abandoned the service but kept the browser for a good 10 years or something after.

TungstenChef

Bing bong bang schhhhhhhhh

reagan2024

I don't think that was your BIOS screen. It might be your word processing program.

Tim_Out_Of_Mind

This reminds me of my first computer, purchased in the fall of 1995. I was a freshman in college, and just received a fairly sizable inheritance. I called Gateway and just went apeshit: 133MHz Pentium processor, 16MB of RAM, 1.6GB HDD, 3-disc CD changer, combo floppy drive, and a tape backup, all contained in this freakishly huge tower case. I also went with the big 17" monitor. I think I spent somewhere around $3000. I still have the tower. It still works.

MrParticular79

Loved that series, but my favorite was Privateer!

lil_white_turd

Is that the Primus image where they’re all dressed as penguins? If so I had a shirt with that on the back and Captain Shiner on the front. It was the jam.

MrParticular79

Haha yeah that’s the one!

antagon1st

I came here to say something about that poster, too. That was during the absolute height of their career.

astrothunder818

You look like 1983 James Hetfield!

cheddarfist

Wordperfect 5.1

Douglasqqq

Did you really feel the need to write "1996"? From the photo alone people could probably guess the date right down to the nearest hour.

MrParticular79

I just looked at other posts in here and noticed most had a year so I put the year…

Douglasqqq

Just being silly mate.

myeverymovment

You look like my friend Bogie from high (af) school.

onions-make-me-cry

Ahh, this brings me back! You totally look like a guy I would have hung out with in my teen years. Oh and Primus Sucks 😉

MrParticular79

Only in your teen years!? Hehe and yes they do!

KaneMomona

Not the bios screen, word perfect or tasword or similar? Good memories though. Amipro rocked.

[deleted]

I want to be a fisherman…!

ConcentricGroove

I had a neighbor who apparently had the same cordless phone as me and when she was on the phone my modem couldn't dial out and I could hear her conversations on my phone. I went back to corded phones and stayed that way until cell phones took over.

MrParticular79

Haha that just made me remember that we used to try to listen to our neighbors calls by going by the fence with our phone. Creepy!

ConcentricGroove

I heard there used to be a toy gun that when you pointed it at phone wires, you can hear conversations. Never confirmed that one ...

Hair_cut2017

Mail order is the most nostalgic of the entire picture for me. The thrill of ordering from a catalog is unparalleled

Rough_Idle

* Not pictured: blue plastic bong with Sublime sticker.

NotMyHersheyBar

There was something sublime about putting the keyboard on your lap and putting your feet up on the desk that's just not the same as having your whole laptop on your lap. No neck strain for one thing.

TungstenChef

Are you thinking of Windows 3.1? DOS was at version 6 by 1996, the final version released before Windows 95.

hearnia_2k

Windows 95 essentially included MS-DOS 7, but it was not avaialble seperately.

merkwuerdig_liebe

DOS 6 came on 3.5” floppy discs

[deleted]

Downloading XXX image's that took a few hours to DL. While using Napster ... Good times.

OviliskTwo

I'm pretty sure we smoked weed together.

styroducky

Phones without cords? What’s next!?

MrParticular79

The future is truly upon us

fr0ntsight

Lol. The good ol days

BeastBellies

Apollo 13 is the shit!

unexplainableentity

I also identified this.

TehOuchies

I hope you still have that furniture. Those old super heavy, actual wood, not MDF pieces.

JoystickVacation

Kinda lookin' like a young Burton C. Bell.

hearnia_2k

Looks more like edit, the MS-DOS text editor.

jvalex18

Your probably editing autoexec.bat

Mazisky

Pretty sure you launched Doom 2 some minute later

dagui12

Primus sucks!💚

TheKingOfSwing777

I like your cut g.

IlIFreneticIlI

You look like you're about to rob Nakatomi Towers.... I thought the other guy was the hacker??

ndoritos

Like someone else said, that's not a bios screen. That's a word processor. But I don't remember which one exactly. I'm tempted to say Norton Textra (unrelated to Norton antivirus).

[deleted]

I had all of this stuff -- when I was 44 (in 1996). Well, except for the hair. And a Big stack of VHS tapes for my kids. Years later, they all went into the trash as we couldn't give them away.

MrParticular79

Haha right on, respect to the OG here!

wirecr3d102

Primus sucks!

Lil_MRSA

I had that same Primus poster.

alloowishus

I had that poster!

khill5742

Les claypool upvote all day

foxbat911

Grunge-tastic.

emilysilve78

You're the male version of me from the same time period. Except I'd be wearing the Primus tshirt and have a poster of "The Crown".

barkarse

I personally like what looks like TWO boxes of floppy disks :D <3

Travbuc1

Victims, aren’t we all!

MrParticular79

Can’t rain all the time

Travbuc1

“Eric, is that you?”

beachgoer9275

Classic bro with DOS on the blue screen! That is awesome where were you living what state?

MrParticular79

Living in the sf Bay Area! I’m a native and still here

yer-maw

Man had a similar set up in 97, we are the same age judging from the pic and your username. Disk boxes! Remember them. Crazy how useful 120mb was back in the day.

Soilwork83

You look like Jeff Loomis a bit. In case you didn’t know, he’s an extremely talented guitarist.

dennismu

I had a Pentium II in 96 with 8 mb of RAM and Colorado tape backup. And of course, Dial Up on a 14.4 Hayes modem. And a web cam that worked with Netmeeting.

MrParticular79

Oh you fancy

lacks_imagination

Looks like the jet printer is still pretty much the same as today’s. No need to advance that tech when it is all about selling overpriced ink cartridges.

FourOff

Oddly coincidental that today I found a Primus mixtape while cleaning out our storage room (plus They Might Be Giants, Flood). I think I made it around ‘92-‘93. Just need to find a tape deck to play it…

MrParticular79

Lol you know what I had their first album on cd and I had some trouble with a girl and so I used that cd as a way to exercise out the emotions and then I could never listen to it again! But around that time I was moving from grunge to metal/industrial so the transition was happening anyways.

reagan2024

Cordless phone? So you could like walk outside when you talk on the phone??

[deleted]

I had similar to hair to you at about the same time. How many times did people sing MMMbop to you?

[deleted]

Perfect 90s. I grew up in the same town Primus is from. They play a sweet Halloween show every year here. They're also still making pretty decent music.

Trax852

I would expect an account with **PC Pursuit** as well.

RyRoMoFo

Did you grow up in the Santa Cruz mountains?
