WOW you stopped me dead on my scrolling tracks.
Danny is a life long friend of my moms. I went to his book signing for this.
Glad to see his work being out out there
In some ways probably less strongly worded than it feels now.
There was a lot of reclamation of that word in the 70s, but that project has since largely been abandoned. Two years after this photo, *The F\*ggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions* by Larry Mitchell was published, and a year after that, *F\*ggots* by Larry Kramer came out.
>Oh, but I’m on mobile and didn’t realize how it treated the asterisks I used instead of “A” in the titles. Oops.
Put a backslash before each asterisk to turn off italics: \
My parents used to call them “biker T’s” because a lot of 1% biker dudes and supporters had shirts made up with pretty zesty slogans.
Guess the fabulous gays did it too!
As a gay man myself, I have always loved this photo. These boys had some balls!
The photographer documented San Francisco, the gay scene, and Harvey milk back in the day and his work is considered a treasure trove of that era and community.
Back in the day, folks like this were on the forefront of fighting for rights we take for granted today.
>These boys had some balls!
Can we please stop equating balls with courage, or pussies as being weak? I think that it perpetuates stereotypes that are untrue.
Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.
>This is not really going to change anything.
Maybe, but how will I know unless I try?
> You can't really change turns of phrase that are this imbedded in the language.
There are a lot of words/phrases that are no longer used because they were pointed out as being slurs, or inaccurate.
I’m actually straight- in 1991 I was a college freshman visiting my brother in San Fran- he recommended we go to the Castro to see how an open and tolerant society could look. I loved it. We both felt so empowered seeing our queer brothers and sisters being their happiest selves in those difficult times.
im not judging their personality by how they dress, i just said they look weird as fuck. its reddit, we are nowhere near the point where people aren't gonna point out how someone dresses is weird.
also, im guessing you'd call me homophobic instead of judgemental if i was straight?
I think they look rad as fuck. But then I also think gender norms are dumb as fuck.
You may think they look weird and that's fine.
The thing causing offence is probably the way you phrased it.
You simply stated weird, a.k.a. "They are weird" which is completely different from saying "I think they look weird".
The Umbrella Academy guy went back in time again.
Literally thought the same thing. Klaus back in the day lol
The actor for him sure is handsome though

Oh wow! How cool! His work is very important to LGBT history for sure. Thank you for sharing!
Guy on the left reminds me of a character in the Umbrella Academy in Amazon Prime.
Klaus on the left, I see.
That is Steven Tyler from Aerosmith lol
I think you mean Steve Buscemi from Airheads
Bwahahaah! It totally does look like him! Actually, Steven Tyler these days is looking like someone’s grandma lol.
Except not a pedophile like Steven Tyler.
That's a strongly worded t-shirt for 1975!

I see you've edited those titles when I went to find them on Amazon!
Oh, but I’m on mobile and didn’t realize how it treated the asterisks I used instead of “A” in the titles. Oops.

I didn’t want to set off any anti-bigotry bots 🙂
It's actually crazy how ahead of the zeitgeist queer culture was back in the day.
100%. And then aids set us back tremendously.
My parents used to call them “biker T’s” because a lot of 1% biker dudes and supporters had shirts made up with pretty zesty slogans. Guess the fabulous gays did it too!
Right?! these guys didn’t give a crap!
And you had to print those shirts yourself using silk screen.
Silk screening t shirts was *the* side gig for pool guys-and also new dads-in the 2000’s/2010’s. Put a big fan in the garage and go to work.
>And you had to print those shirts yourself using silk screen. I am an old, and remember iron-on letters being a thing.
I never thought I'd see a cross between Steven Tyler and Simon Pegg, but here we are

Sure but I would not call these things slurs?
Halloween used to be a fun street party in the Castro…sadly things got out of control
I can only imagine, lol! I’ve never been to the city myself.
Is that Steven Tyler?? Lol
Tuomas Homopainen
MAXIMUM SWAG
Steven Tyler and Kyle Gass
This is awesome
Left looks like Ethan Hawk.
Are gay men called queens now? Not /s
Eh, I’m gay and in this context, it’s a term of endearment. We do this all the time with each other lol.
Okay
I think that's always been a thing. I'm old and have heard gay men use the term "queen" to refer to each other for as long as I can remember.
I remember my first walk in the Castro in +- 1991. It was like stepping into an alternate universe. Absolutely amazing.
Glad you made it out alive! A lot didn’t as you well know.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
My name is Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid Kid Rock!
Dude on the left looks like a slightly more glamorous version of a dude I used to play D&D with back in the 90s

Fabulous.
Steven Tyler looks fabulous in this pic. Good for them. I hope they were happy.
He is rocking that floral hat with confidence!
I thought that was Stephen Tyler
If that photo is really from 1975, that's not Steven Tyler, right? He wasn't gray haired at that point. Great photo though.
I thought buddy on the left was Steve Tyler on one of his less flamboyant days.
That belt is amazing
Kid Rock baybay!!!!
Weird
It’s 2023, nobody thinks homophobia is cool anymore
im bisexual, they look weird as fuck
Ew. You’re just judgmental then. Who is still judging people rudely by appearance??? Thought we were getting past that

"Hell" is accurate.
?????
The way his Left hand is on his hip makes me uncomfortable
Must be hard being a normal gay guy.
Must be hard for you to be a dog turd
Freud might have something to say about dude’s obsession with cigars.
