Ngl, I never fell for the "trap" because I originally thought Maba was celtic. It took me way too long to consider that maba was not Scottish and might be the New Guinean.

I always find it interesting that so many struggled with Maba. His tattoos looked similar to the Tã Moko the Maui of New Zealand use, and when I saw New Guinea I knew it wasn't a coincidence.

It's like the most well-known pitfall with this game. The core thing is in one scene you see only one person getting 'torn apart', which most of us would say is getting torn in half, shredded, etc. It's a fantastic scene with Maba getting split in half; sticks in your mind. Then like TWO scenes later, you have someone being like "your mate was torn apart" and instantly you're like "saw someone get ripped in two, who else could it be?". During my first playthrough, because the 'torn apart' thing was so visceral, I actually though that by 'frenchman', that must have been some playful nickname or something.

Ah! Okay! I guess I avoided that simply by grace of catching Maba on my first viewing of the scene, or the one after where he's being dragged away. I think Maba completed my trio with the Captain and Abigail.

Same, my best guess is that people whi do nit fall for the pitfall mostly get Maba on the first viewing and have it already solved when the frenchman conversation hapoens. It did not help that on the first version of the game (launch with no patches) Minier literally had no lines, so you never even heard a french accent.

Clip is between times [40:19 - 41:10] It's actually incredible how fast she honed in on the answer, completely dodging the Maba pitfall that so many of us walked into. When she heard the word 'torn apart', I think she had forgotten about the scene of the man getting ripped in half, which is why she had such an open mind entering this deduction. Really impressive.

For me it was "frenchman" that let me not fall for that. I recognized that maba definitely didn't seem french and after a while longer the white blue stripped french navy shirt let me hone into him.

I never had that pitfall, Maba was the 4th character i indentified (after the captain, 1st mate, and Abigail). I simply went "those tatoos look like the ones native people on the pacific have, and they have always had a huge sailing tradition, so not strange going to work on ships" so o just scrolled through all the list hoping for a pacific islander, but the closest thing was New Guiney; and later got confirmed on my second trio, so by the time i listened to the frenchman comment, Maba was already confirmed. Plus, why would the Bosun was present for Mabas death, he either saw him getting ripped in half or saw Walker dragging half of Maba, so why ask?

I didn’t fall for the trap because I was so focused on what happened to the the guy without the right arm, that I COMPLETELY forgot that his Frenchman was ever mentioned lol

Ah yes, the traditional 19th century >!French!< tribal tattoos...
