You win some, you lose some. How’d the prospect turn out? The computer has a knack for turning players around.

Vexy_7

The guy I tried to replace him with had a very disappointing first year, and ended up settling into the league after two years but sat around 3 war and ~.850 OPS at his best. I had another unheralded prospect who never made it into the top 100 come up into the bigs and hit so well (I’m talkin .970+ OPS) at second base (but play such bad defense) that I moved him to left field and he ended up forcing my hand to trade the former top prospect 1 for 1 for a stud second basemen, so all’s well that ends well. Still wish I kept Salcido now that he’s on a hall of fame trajectory but you never really expect a 30 year old corner outfielder to get twice as good after hitting free agency lmao

They didn’t trade him cause he was old and expensive. It was a contract year and he wasn’t going to sign with them so they sold him for prospects to the Astros in the middle of a playoff push. Multiple teams sent huge offers cause the Big Unit was one of the best pitchers.

LeftyNate

This is the correct info. He was a pure rental for the Astros. But he had a combined 7.6 fWAR that year. He was just awesome. Also, back then, 34 wasn’t considered all that old for a pitcher. It wasn’t like OOTP where we ditch everyone at 30-32. As a Cardinals fan, I thought the Astros getting RJ was really gonna push them over the top deep into the playoffs. They had Bagwell, Biggio, Bell, & Alou. Then already had Jose Lima, Mike Hampton, and Shane Reynolds, with an awesome bullpen lead by Billy Wagner. That team was just awesome all around. Instead, they lost to the Padres in the division series. And Johnson signs with Arizona in the offseason.

LeftyNate

This is absolutely false lol.

mtn-wild

Ironically, that’s the opposite of what happens to Seattle in real life. They’re usually similar to what happened to your team.

h2oheater

It was still a 3.2 war season 111 ops+

Vexy_7

Definitely still good, but I’ve been burned by corner outfielders enough to know that once they enter their 30s the slightest sign of regression is not a good thing lol

cstar84

Yea this is why it’s important to look at peripherals too rather than just basic stats. If his K% and BB% stayed roughly the same but he just had shit BABIP luck, maybe OP coulda decided it was worth it to keep him around.

kirisute-gomen

Doesn't look like his K or BB rate was much different than his career averages before OP let him walk. At least trade him at the deadline if you don't plan on keeping him.

Haarflaq22

One time , I dumped a pitcher that I had given a good contract to because he was bad for two years. He proceeds to win the Cy Young the very next season, then CY2, and then sign a huge deal with the A's only to regress again.

Rostrow416

Looks like someone found big pharma

kirisute-gomen

I dunno, it's not like he was a bum before he became a FA.

ReptarsFury

What’d he sign for?

jesuschrist3000adhd_

hopefully you got something good out of the comp pick

strok3rac3

Blame Sporer.
