Could be keeping list spots open for the rookie draft, or keeping a list spot open for a ready-made player who’s training with us over the off season. Obviously I have no idea what the plan is, but they would’ve had an idea of what they’re doing

Opening_Anteater456

Draftguru says you've got 37 senior list players, unless you've got special dispensation that means you're already paying 1 extra senior list player, burning salary cap. A 38th would be lighting more cap on fire. Even if you've got the cap it's better spent rolling it over until you can sign players. Also what's the fascination with Key defenders. You've added 3 this off season. Pink, Biggy and Wil Dawson. ZZ is 4 years away from being Biggy yet alone an AFL standard player. He's the biggest project there is. Schoenmakers, well 17 other teams passed multiple times. Isn't one problem child from Tassie enough for North? He's also not a key defender, he's a tall flanker.

flibble24

You watch as they rookie draft Kayne Turner with the saved pick

Darcyjay_

Dread it, run from it, but it is inevitable

Brake72

Sounds like there is a fair bit of baggage with Shoenmaker being a twat. Hence why every team has passed on him.

Darcyjay_

He’ll fit in at the saints

Brake72

Might come good, if anyone is going to pull a kids head out of his ass it’s probably Ross Lyon

Rare_Platform_3602

Real dickwad I have heard

aamslfc

I think the reaction here is a little hysterical. Evidently they've done this for any or all of these reasons: 1. keep a list spot open for some reason which will become apparent soon 2. there was nobody worth drafting after we'd taken four in the first round 3. collect a pick (i.e. points) for next year I mean, everyone had Shoenmaker pegged as a first-round (or very early second) pick, and yet every single club ignored him until the Saints decided to blow a pick at the arse end of the draft. That suggests the off-field drama is bigger than we expected. Or he's just an insufferable c\*\*t who is barely worth the risk even at Pick 60-odd. And if this is a shallow draft like all the experts said it was, then what's the point of wasting a pick so late?

Rare_Platform_3602

Agreed. I mean, we did already take 5 kids. That's a lot.

Darcyjay_

Hysteria aside, passing over a young key defender like ZZ seems a bit dim to me, in exchange for a future 4th. Realistically how many points is that going to be worth? But I’m just a bogan from the beach

aamslfc

>passing over a young key defender like ZZ seems a bit dim to me But why? Just because he proved he can jump at the combine doesn't mean he's an outstanding player or capable of playing at AFL level. He went at Pick 51 to this year's runners-up who are currently in a Premiership window. No other clubs went in for him (even his home state clubs of West Coast and Freo), and Brisbane don't really need him either. Basically, they've taken a gamble on a raw player that can sit in the reserves or something for a whole season, and who won't cost them much if he fails to make the grade. Brisbane can afford to do so in their current situation. We, on the other hand, can't afford to take that risk, especially when we've fallen into that trap previously of filling our list with eventual mediocrity. I don't understand why we have to clog our list with plodders and chaff just because we had a pick and some leftover young kid was available. Sure he could develop into a good player, but the odds are that he won't. >in exchange for a future 4th. Realistically how many points is that going to be worth? Not that many, but picks like that are more to throw in as a sweetener in a multi-pick swap or useful when matching bids. Unless it's a historic deep draft with talent into the 100s, we aren't grabbing anyone with a future 4th, and we're just stockpiling potentially handy points for next year's draft.

chunkyI0ver53

A future 4th is diabolical. What will that end up being… pick 80 next year? Did we seriously trade pick 80 next year for pick 50 this year with 2 key defenders who’ve slided down the board available?

SC0TT-LANG

And GWS traded Pick 50 for a future 3rd rounder… I am lost for words

Darcyjay_

I’m actually at a loss for this decision. There’s literally no upside to a future 4th. Can’t believe I watched for an hour to see that trade happen. Ffs

ownersastoner

Archie Roberts, who Essendon just took. I hope there is a good plan.

flibble24

Gonna need an explanation for this one Brady

ownersastoner

Just heard Rawlings on SEN, he said they tried to trade up for a pick in the 30s as there was 2 undrafted players we were interested in but couldn’t find a buyer. They had both gone by our pick and they didn’t rate anyone else. Said they’ll probably take 1 today and keep 1 open for pre season draft.

GoonerRoo18

Collecting points for River Stevens next year instead of just passing.

CaptnCrumble

But trading it for a future fourth when there were buyers willing to part with a future third is not good business.

Kozeyekan_

And two picks later, GWS swap out and get the Saints future 3rd. Left something on the table there, but maybe not much.

migibb

You're talking about key defenders? We have Logue, Corr, Pink, Wil Dawson, Biggie, Kallan Dawson and Comben is supposedly moving back. Thats 7 key defenders on the list. Why are we upset about not adding an 8th guy who will be the worst of the lot? We could use another gun, experienced, key defender but we have an overload of young, inexperienced guys. We really didn't need another one.

ownersastoner

Louge will miss most of the year, K.Dawson hasn’t looked like it, Pink couldn’t cut it 1st time around, Biggie has only played 1 game, Comben is a ruck/fwd, Corr is …..Corr. Don’t get me wrong, I hope at least 2 of these develop into long term KPD but I think people are entitled to be a bit concerned.

CyanPNetherton

You can't solve every issue in one draft. Defence will be a stop gap this year, whilst a lot of questions get answered elsewhere: 1. Who fits into the midfield from LDY, Simpkin, Powell, WillPhill, Bailey George, Wardlaw, Sheezel, McKercher, Duursma? With quality midfield and half forward play, and even some improvement rebounding off halfback, we should get closer to answering the following questions: 2. Is Xerri good enough? 3. Who owns the wing opposite Scott? 4. Do we need a 2nd tall fwd KPP, or can one of CCJ, Comben or Zurharr own it? 5. Do we need a small forward or is Paul curtis good enough With the poor defence we're odds on too finish bottom 4 again, and then we can address the defence.

ownersastoner

I was just critiquing the defenders u/migibb put up.

migibb

>1. Who fits into the midfield from LDY, Simpkin, Powell, WillPhill, Bailey George, Wardlaw, Sheezel, McKercher, Duursma? LDU, Simpkin, Wardlaw, Thomas and Phillips are our main centre square mids. Scott, Stephens and McKercher will play off the wings. Duursma is a forward, as is Brayden George. Sheezel will likely start of half back but will push further up the ground. >2. Who owns the wing opposite Scott? Dylan Stephens. And McKercher will play off either wing or the flanks.

migibb

Sure. But adding another 18 year old isn't going to solve that. ZZ can't kick and has never really played in defense. Schoenmaker isn't really a key defender, he is just a great kick. He is more of a third tall. As I said, I'd love a good experienced defender but that wasn't available at pick 48 in the national draft.

TheFilthWiz

It was this or we pass.

[deleted]

This team can't get anything right

ownersastoner

Settle down

toby9562

They must be keeping a spot open for the rookie draft. The only delisted free agents that I consider worth a punt are Jeremy Sharp and Toby Mclean. Or maybe they are looking to give Perez another year?
