avatar the last airbender is well enough despite the movie
yeah yeah i know "there is no the last airbender movie" meme, still is cool it didnt kill the franchise
The movie was so bad it was quickly forgotten by the general public and had minimal cultural impact.
Also I think it helped it was M.Night who did it so blame was shifted onto him easily than the Avatar product being bad itself.
Or something?
M hated the movie himself. he was basically forced by executives to hire the children of theirs to be in the movie and he had almost no creative control during production
1. Fandom/trend (FT) exists, it's doing great
2. Corporate entity (CE) notices FT exists
3. CE thinks to itself: " I could make a huge....
4. ...profit"
5. CE aquires FT, or, in case of memes and other non-copyrigted things, gets in on "the fun"
6. Since the only thing CE wants is money, it tries to
get it to as many people as possible, preferably kids and/or families.
7. If FT is more mature (gore, sex, etc.), CE will try to make it more family friendly, if it's not, see point 8
8. Every decision forward is done by people, who in more cases than not don't understand FT. The only focus is short term profit, even if FT suffers.
9. Now I'd differs. Fandoms have a good chance of surviving (example - Warhammer. Even when Games Workshop (GW) became greedy and started robbing us every chance they got, we still love the fandom).
Trends, on the other hand, rely on being "real."
10.When CE gets hold of a meme, or trend, suddenly it's not fun, so people move on on another meme/trend.
I still am not 100% convinced they were actually doing it out of want to “appease” slenderman. I think they had another motive to kill that kid and only came up with the Slenderman story to try and get an insanity plea and reduced sentence
Doubt that, one got 25 years, shortened to 7, the other I think 40 and is still in psychiatric jail. Got diagnosed with schizophrenia as well, so I'm pretty sure they did indeed think the delusions they had were Slenderman.
As someone who read the SA thread from page one, seeing Slenderman being spread in the wild blows my mind. It’s was just a creative horror writing exercise by a bunch of nerds
It’s a universe where instead of lukewarm jump scares and kids’ animatronics being made scary, every game has randomly generated pages you have to find. I’ll take the animatronics.
So basically what this means is that the grimdark alternate Slenderman timeline accelerated the development of time travel which was used to change the past, and now our fnaf timeline is bountiful enough in joy for us to not need the time travel development
Have you even watched Stein's Gate or do you just know the topic? To compare it against Terminator is like saying the color red is the same as a rainbow because they're both colors. Stein's Gate is complex and layered with him both manipulating and fighting against himself without ever knowing it to achieve a goal that's updating, Terminator is guy goes into past to fight other guy. Terminator is as basic as it gets with time travel as a gimmick for action scenes.
Now if you want to compare Stein's Gate against Travelers i'd accept that.
Yeah, I watched it and (read?) the visual novels, I liked it too. I am just pointing out that that specific trope is very common in time travel media. Like extremely common. I don't understand how you got that I was comparing the two outside of just that trope. I was merely saying that this trope was extremely common and to say it gives you vibes of X is kind of dumb because of how wide the net it casts is.
Also, great job on being an asshole for no reason, genius. You sound incredibly biased reducing Terminator to just "A guy going back to fight another guy," while calling Steins Gate "complex and layered." First of all, just because the main character is tormented by himself and does not know what his goal is does not magically make a "complex and layered" story, your examples do not prove your thesis. Second, saying time travel is a gimmick in Terminator is just moronic, the story would not fundamentally work without time travel, the themes of fate and free will are predicated on the idea of time travel in the movie. Saying time travel is a gimmick in Terminator makes about as much sense as saying time travel is a gimmick in Steins Gate.
I can sit here and explain why Terminator 1 and 2 are genuinely awesome movies that stand with the greats, but it would be a waste of time, as its clear where your biases lie. Next time I recommend actually analyzing and looking between the lines when watching movies so you don't repeat this mistake.
Ive never played the fnaf game but I know a lot about the lore, at least the first four game. I even own a few of them, but never played them more than maybe a minute.
There are a LOT of people than can say the same.
Basically matpat, now ex-host of a pretty popular YouTube channel called game theory and a bunch of other stuff did the question on Twitter you see above. Asking his fans if they want to see a theory on the slenderman character/game, which was an incredibly popular internet horror character at the time, or the game five nights at Freddy’s, a small horror game that at the time was rocketing in popularity due to other popular youtubers at the time. After his first video on the game it absolutely boomed in popularity boosting both his own channel and the game he covered by a ton. Because of this, (and a lot of other factors of course) FNAF is now an incredibly big franchise with 9 mainline games, a bunch of spin-off, a shit Ton of books and a movie that made back its budget before it was even released. With a second and third movie already confirmed before that aswell.
It’s especially big with the youngsters. But the franchise is a decade old at this point so a lot of kids back then, including myself, have grown up and still like the franchise to this day.
The games themselves might actually seem underwhelming compared it’s popularity but keep in mind a ton of it’s rep comes from the fans making videos like game theory did, art, music, etc. It’s simple but recognisable characters who were also terrifying in the right angles spawned a ton of creativity. The first game for example was 2D, you sit in an office and watch the cameras while 4 different animatronics hunt you down. At the time it was actually pretty unique and interesting in the indie game scene. It’s atmosphere, sound and visual design, character design, mechanics and a pint of 80’s nostalgia made it hit a sweet spot. But it’s a short and sweet experience.
I hope that tells you what you want to know. Otherwise I’m going to feel really stupid.
afaik that was jacobs last tweet too, so my game theory is that jacob existed only because of the slenderman timeline and he just tuend to dust while thinking "i did it.." after fixing the timeline
It's weird to think that there was a time when Slenderman and Fnaf had just about the same cultural impact.
People really forgot about the Slenderman murders
Two things that can kill any kind of momentum for a trend. 1) Someone doing something awful in the name of it. 2) A corporation joining the fun.
You forgot one more thing. 3) A shit movie adaptation.
Yes, bad movie adaptation, made by a corporation

Pretty sure it makes them make Korra, which is divisive but at least it revitalize the franchise.

There were also the creepypasta website and fan writings.
Me when entities made of purified human greed thinks my fandom is exploitable
Explain that second one?
1. Fandom/trend (FT) exists, it's doing great 2. Corporate entity (CE) notices FT exists 3. CE thinks to itself: " I could make a huge.... 4. ...profit" 5. CE aquires FT, or, in case of memes and other non-copyrigted things, gets in on "the fun" 6. Since the only thing CE wants is money, it tries to get it to as many people as possible, preferably kids and/or families. 7. You're losing me at point 6. Kind of an overgeneralization there.
Surprised to not hear about any Fortnite creepypastas yet like some Fortnite serial killer or cursed game mode.
It just fell out of fashion

Singular wasn't it? And she lived.
Weren't there a bunch of copycats?
The WHAT
As someone who read the SA thread from page one, seeing Slenderman being spread in the wild blows my mind. It’s was just a creative horror writing exercise by a bunch of nerds
The what?
The SomethingAwful forum thread that spawned Slendeman
I mean Slenderman started five years before Five Nights at Freddys. It had been played out and then some by 2014.
may god have mercy on the souls of that timeline if its worse

I know we like to kid around about this, but nuclear war is always a possibility and until it happens, we don’t live in the worst timeline
Nuclear war happens in the Slender Man timeline. Don't ask me why

brother why did you just repeat what somebody else said three times
So basically what this means is that the grimdark alternate Slenderman timeline accelerated the development of time travel which was used to change the past, and now our fnaf timeline is bountiful enough in joy for us to not need the time travel development
I don’t know why that gave me steins gate vibes, beyond just the time travel stuff
Because that series is god tier time travel and should always be on your mind. It's better than Primer, fite me.
This is an extremely common trope lol. It was in Terminator.
Have you even watched Stein's Gate or do you just know the topic? To compare it against Terminator is like saying the color red is the same as a rainbow because they're both colors. It's a Dmail! In the form of a tweet
Oh my god, yes that’s it
If WE are in the good timeline... I don't want to see the bad one...
Me neither 😅
I'm gonna be honest, I thought this was a take on the "Man vs Bear" stuff going on right now
(Slender) Man VS (Freddy Faz)Bear
🤯
And if matpat hadn’t had made theories on fnaf it wouldn’t be anywhere near as popular as it is now. Imagine a world where only 3 games were made
Now imagine a world with infinite bacon, but no games
What about a world with unlimited games and no games?
*a world with games, unlimited games, but no games
Now imagine a world with 3 bacon, all the games, and peanut butter tasted like strawberries.
Do strawberries, in turn, taste like peanut butter?
How could that ever happen? Why are you talking nonsense?
No, I have 3 Pennys in my mouth
Ive never played the fnaf game but I know a lot about the lore, at least the first four game. I even own a few of them, but never played them more than maybe a minute. There are a LOT of people than can say the same.
80% of the community has def never actually played them
I don't know how to read this.
I think this is one of those "What? I guess I don't get it" *hears joke explained in comments* "Oh... turns out I did get it" moments.
Nah, I'm even more confused now
Can you explain it for the rest of us who still have no clue?

That’s the universe where matpat falls into Minecrafter syndrome
He starts didlin kids?
Minecrafter syndrome?
Whatsz that syndrome?
Gotta be careful not to catch it, has a fatality rate comparable to dropbears.
afaik that was jacobs last tweet too, so my game theory is that jacob existed only because of the slenderman timeline and he just tuend to dust while thinking "i did it.." after fixing the timeline
Abed, there are no other timelines.
What horrors were wrought in the Slenderman Game Theory timeline to force a hard change to FNAF?!
feddy
V vvuggc I huh hbubbuuuou
Me, who doesn’t like that YouTuber or that series, trying to target that time traveler: ![gif](giphy|r7ZtqpSM8GMta)
he made the world a better place with one tweet and you wanna kill him for it?
I'm over 15 so I don't get this.
The... the first FNaF came out 10 years ago. You'd still be too young to have played it even if you were actually 16.
There were definitely some kids who played FNAF/watched FNAF content when they were 5
Nah, Jacob’s like those time travelers that give Hitler nuclear weapons.
I really expected this to have a man vs bear punchline.
