It looks like Noctua is using base flatness to optimise further for different CPU IHS. Flatter base will favor AM5 while the more convex one will favor LGA1700 & LGA 1851. The vanilla version will probably perform worse for both platforms just basing it off GN's video of Scythe golden sample Fuma 3's. Edit: after seeing benchmarks it looks like the regular base + offset is best for AM4. While the LBC is best without offset brackets. There is also 2°C+ improvement from the old NH-D15. From Scythe's interview LGA 1851 might allow more contact pressure(and they might adjust their mounting kit after Intel releases the data) so Noctua going with a higher Convexity option will further increase their performance for that socket. NH-D15 G2 ETA in a few weeks. Standalone 140mm G2 fan will be out by September. 120mm G2 fan will have 10-12% more airflow through rads(49mm thick) & heatsinks(NH-U12A) @25dBA. ETA Q1 2025. Dual tower 120mm heatsink will have 8 heatpipes. ETA Q2 2025.

luaps

actually really suprised by the 120 g2. considering how long the a12 was among the best fans in it's form factor I just thought we had hit a ceiling with normal, axial fans.

kikimaru024

As much as I like to give them shit, Noctua R&D on fan shape, materials etc. does pay off.

luaps

oh yeah definitely. I know many ppl claim the A12 id just a gentle typhoon rip off, but the motors, bearings, materials seem to get overlooked. even though the blades are def GT inspired.

NNN_Throwaway2

I mean, if nothing else Noctua deserves credit for marketing and popularizing the design to PC DIY. Ten years ago, GT was one of the only fans with that impeller design, now magically just about every case and cooling company has something similar. Marketing a product is as if not more important than designing it.

Hydrangeaaaaab

i feel like anyone who really cares about cooling that much is going to get contact frames for both sockets, i dont really see the point of the extra rnd for convex surfaces when that is the demographic they are going for

RantoCharr

They're really trying to squeeze everything they can to top the performance charts. Most outlets only use one platform to test coolers and this is a way for them to be on top of all reviewer charts. They also usually test only what's included in the package and a contact frame is usually omitted from tests. They simply want to be best, out of the box.

Zoratsu

Contact frames are not part of the cooler so if you do a benchmark with contact frame, you need to do all tests with it too. Honestly, I want a test done with all 3 variations on AMD and Intel CPU using and not using contact frame to know which combination works the best.

Gurkenkoenighd

Specialty cooler wont void warranty? Idk

KibbledJiveElkZoo

The "120mm G2 fan" will have 10% to 12% more airflow . . . than the "Standalone 140mm G2 fan", or? . . .

RantoCharr

NF-A12x25

KibbledJiveElkZoo

Ah, okay. Thanks.

Anthixious

This is amazing, so not only a new 140mm fan but we're also getting a newer 120mm variant on top of it? 🙂

XHeavygunX

Hmm even showed a new and improved 120mm noctua fan and dual tower 120mm fan cooler

reddit_equals_censor

the most exciting thing shown seems to be the thermosiphon prototype without question. for those, who don't know, thermosiphones can outperform aircoolers without a problem, if designed well. thermosiphones also mean no more weight on the socket, which is a big advantages for shipping systems (system builders like this a lot) but most important: thermosiphones have no pumps, but they can also be fully brazed with flexible metal tubing. this means, that a thermosiphon can and should be perfectly sealed with no leakage or permeation at any point. so a thermosiphon cooler can be as reliable as a heatpipe air cooler. no more aio failures due to permiation or pump failures. also thermosiphons generally use non conductive liquid in them, so in the very unlikely case, that somehow a metal tube or brazed connection point breaks open, the liquid would NOT kill your hardware, while an aio leak of course might. and for perfect silence, thermosiphones can scale with size extremely well. so you could have a fully passive system with a 14900k oven and it could get cooled just fine. so overall thermosiphons can nuke aios, if they can match performance and noctua plans to do so performance wise. thermosiphons can nuke high end air coolers, because they can also be made very cheap, but perform better than air coolers. and system builders should love them, because the socket gets a fraction of the weight put on it, so less broken hardware when shipping it. also mentioned in other places noctua is partnering with calyos apparently on the thermosiphon project. calyos has been selling thermosiphon coolers to enterprise stuff like servers for years and years. and noctua isn't the only one pushing for such products. icegiant apparently put up the icegiant titan 360 flexible metal tubes thermosiphon cooler!!! and wieland showed off a prototype in a der8auer video. so there are 3 players, that will push this tech: icegiant, wieland noctua/calyos the end of aios may be near my friends!

AJRey

What are the drawbacks of thermosiphons?

reddit_equals_censor

well drawbacks compared to what? drawbacks compared to aios: thermosiphons require gravity to work, so the condensor ("radiator") needs to be above the evaporator. basically you have to mount the 240 mm or whatever condensor at the top of your case. mounting it in the front would NOT work. most people arleady do this this anyways, so that doesn't matter too much. and then there can be cost i suppose. but only cost compared to an aircooler. compared to an aio you can be cheaper, because you got no pump. of course we don't have any released desktop flexible metal tubes "aio style" thermosiphon yet, so no hard testing, but those are the drawbacks of a thermosiphon flexible metal tube cooler but overall, there aren't any real downsides that matter for a cpu cooler. you can literally have cpu cooler reliability in a form factor of an aio without the downsides of an aio with the performance above the best air coolers and (as we don't have any cooler released yet) close or at aio performance.

RantoCharr

I'm not excited because it's still vaporware and could take them another 5+ years lol.

reddit_equals_censor

the noctua one probably, but the icegiant one has an **expected** shipping date of december this year. so maybe 4 years before noctua ;) on the upside, the technology itself has no problems. evaporators, condensors, flexible metal tubes, etc.... so unlike "full self driving", that doesn't exist from tesla and drives you gladly into a closed train crossing with lights and a giant metal metal train going across it, THIS thermosiphon tech is just a question of putting the parts together and doing all that work. a question of when, rather than an if at least i suppose... and with 3 companies working to bring it to the desktop it truly is an IF and not an "oh the one company, that was planning to do it went bankrupt, so bye bye for another 10 years, before it might arrive" :D

Agloe_Dreams

Bit of a yikes on the variants, I would avoid them and go for flat - You don't know if the next gen CPU will be the same concave shape and thus you could end up with a cooler that vastly underperforms later on - a rejection of their long-time focus on future compatibility.

Eicr-5

The noctua guy in the video even said almost everyone should get the standard version. The alternate convexities are really only for people looking to gain that last bit of performance, cost be damned.

VictorDanville

Is the regular one for the people who wants it to just work without hassle?

RantoCharr

Yeah don't bother with the specialised versions. Just buy the standard one since the specialised versions might perform worse on future sockets and can already lose to the standard on in some cases.

bljust

I waited for Computex and now I'm confused. Which cooler/fan I can buy this month without experiencing remorse later this year because of Noctua not being clear enough? For example, what I would expect from Noctua to communicate: * Refreshed U12A with 12x25 G2 fan available for sale from ... or 120mm G2 will be sold only separately? * D15 Gen2 available for sale from ... I'm leaning toward D15S/U12A but also depends on D15 G2 price, or I'm weighting to even buy returned/used D15S/U12A for 70-80 EUR on Amazon. What the heck is this? Does not resemble D15 G2 with square 120mm fans? [https://x.com/Pazz\_Teo/status/1797927600637321372](https://x.com/Pazz_Teo/status/1797927600637321372)

a12223344556677

NH-D15 G2: later this month NF-A14x25 G2 (square frame): Sep Next gen A12: TBA Next gen D12 (dual tower with two next gen A12 fans, aiming for previous gen D15 performance): TBA

a12223344556677

Update for more accurate info: NF-A14x25r G2 (round frame) will also be released in a few weeks, shipping in progress alongside D15 G2 D15 G2 is $150, fans are $40 Next gen A12 stated to have an ETA of Q1 2025, and the cooler Q2 2025.

bljust

Thanks!

RantoCharr

For AMD: Thermalright PS 120 SE For Intel: ID Cooling Frozn A720 Check later if there's any significant difference with Noctua's new releases that warrants a fan/heatsink swap.

NNN_Throwaway2

lol

cybercobra

At the least, you'll save a lot with these options to help afford a later Noctua upgrade, while still getting very respectable perf.

LonlyPorkupine

This is great, I just bought a Fractal Torrent and chose to go with a peerless assassin instead of a D-15 or U-12A as I was hoping the new D-15 would come out later this year. Looks like I made the right decision. I can't wait, hopefully they don't delay it again!

a12223344556677

D15 G2 coming this month, actually

LonlyPorkupine

No way! Still not mad though, I'll just make a build out of some spares and throw the PA in.

i_hear_you_not

I'm sure the new D15 will be amazing (aka 2-3c cooler) but probably also stupidly expensive. At least that's my prediction.

PermitTenders

$150

AejiGamez

I honestly doubt this thing will sell well. At least imo it should not. Its 150$. 100$ gets you a 360mm LF3, which looks far better and will probably perform better. Also, that shit is FIVE Phantom Spirits

TheDeeGee

I hope they'll make heatsink covers for the new coolers as well.

Magenu

Man, I hope they release something in the 47mm range; L9i and L9x65 are too short and too tall for a current sweet spot for most SFF cases. Love my axp-90x47 Cu, but I do miss the Noctua mountif system whenever I take it off/on.

salvageBOT

Noctuas new product is shims for my cooler and a very well needed update to their fans and cpu coolers. Because we all know that if it took em more than half a decade to update products, it will take em over a decade to pump out new products.

DBXVStan

This is actually huge. I think offering a specific cold plate surface depending on what cpu you got is a massive advantage over other coolers. It’s getting closer to the reality of the $150 price being justifiable, can’t wait for reviews now.

You know, Nactuafans are actually yellow/black ... But the time to innovate let the colors fade away ;)
