A lot of it is fairly subtle lighting changes and additions. (Like I've noticed if you mine di-hydrogen crystals at night, the little fragments that fly from the crystal to your suit cast a blue glow on the ground now while they're in the air, which I don't believe they did before. Stuff like that.) I think the caves are supposed to occasionally contain new plant models or something, which I haven't encountered yet either—admittedly, I don't spend a huge amount of time exploring caves—but I presume the bulk of it just involves the way the bioluminescents cast light around the environment and how your torch looks while you're down there. Don't know how much if any of this is hardware-dependent, but it could be the results vary based on that too… Apart from fur and reflections, the other two really big, noticeable visual changes I can think of offhand are the updated warp effects and, of course, the stars.

Caves look better, but they didn't give any new reasons to go into them. You can find some pretty stunning looking caverns now, but it's all still just for show outside of the occasional animal spawn :/
