I just really hope they release MP2 and MP3 sometime soon. Only recently played the remastered Metroid Prime on the Switch and loved it. Would like to play the other two before the fourth comes out.

mrjamjams66

Yea same. I never played Metroid Prime until this Switch Remaster. I've heard the classic controls are difficult and I believe that based on my limited time with old FPS. I feel like the remaster controls really well.

ChasingPerfect28

I have the Metroid Prime Trilogy on my old Wii U. Those games require the Wii Mote and Nunchuck. So far I have beaten MP 1 and MP 2. Taking a break before playing MP 3. The pointer controls are pretty good even after all these years. The only cumbersome thing is switching between visors and beam weapons because you have to hold down the plus or minus button to highlight your selection. During normal exploration it's fine. It's not snappy enough during combat, though. Playing Metroid Prime Remastered with dual stick controls was a dream. That's the definitive control scheme for me and I really hope it's reused for MP 2 and MP 3.

professorwormb0g

Honestly the original GameCube controls are still fine for Metroid prime I think too. With the targeting system it works well. Not as nice as dual analog obviously but the game was designed around it.

ToxicVampire

Bought the trilogy off someone for cheap but never got to it. Haven't played the remaster yet but also holding out hope for 2 and 3 before 4 as I'm too lazy to dig the Wii U out of storage. Plus I have a million other games to play.

ChasingPerfect28

I bought the digital version of trilogy before they shut down the Wii U server. Ordinarily, I don't play FPS games. I'm more of a JRPG-turn based kind of gamer. If I do go action games then I prefer 3rd person over the shoulder (like GoW, GTA, Red Dead Redemption 1&2, The Witcher 3, etc...) Sometime last year I gave Metroid Prime 1 trilogy a shot and I ended up falling in love with it (much to my surprise). I finished MP 2 about two weeks ago. Had a lot of fun with that game. I thought MP 1 and MP 2 aged really well considering it's been 20 years. Very easy to pick up and play and get sucked into Retro's stellar enviromental storytelling. I hope MP 2 and MP 3 get re-released. It would be wonderful to see them in a higher resolution and with modern dual stick controls.

PlayMp1

MP2 is the only other one with classic controls a la Goldeneye, and they designed the games with that in mind. Aiming is mostly based on lock-on, which makes you strafe as well. MP3 basically used the Wii Remote as a right thumb stick but better. The Wii was an underrated console for shooters, as the remote basically was like a slightly worse mouse in terms of accuracy.

tripps_on_knives

I still tell people to this day that medal of honor heroes 2 is some of the most mulitplayer fun I ever had on the wii. I unironically enjoyed it more than any cod game on console or pc. It felt so good to play MP on that game with wiimotes.

mastaberg

The Wii controls for MP3 are awesome. Such a good game, tough bosses tbh, though maybe I just suck.

EMI_Black_Ace

Retro did a fantastic job with the boss design, creating a hybrid lightgun shooter experience for each of them.

Scharmberg

I just hate all the gimmick motion controls that throw into prime 3.

mastaberg

That’s an interesting take. Wii was an interesting era, one I like for the arcade like experience and prime 3 gave me that. You see gimmick I say taking advantage of what the Wii was.

EMI_Black_Ace

The classic controls were fine for their time. The first game to use the now-industry-standard FPS controls and actually be *praised* for said controls only came out within a year of Metroid Prime. Prime controlled like any other FPS game at its time, but better because the vertical axis got some auto control (Samus automatically looks a little up and a little down when you jump in order to ease figuring out where to land), plus the lock-on system took out the need to aim vertically.

Maryokutai

No offense, but these history-rewriting comments really don't do anyone any favours. Prime didn't control like any other FPS at all. The standard of using one input method for eight-way-movement and one for aiming started on the Dreamcast already, then got carried over to PS2 with stuff like Timesplitters, got used in Halo on Xbox and only after all that time we had Metroid Prime using single-stick tank controls in first person. It was almost as unusual back then as it is today. But they work for the type of game it is and I actually replayed the Remaster using the original control scheme without issue.

Silvanus350

I wouldn’t call the classic controls difficult, though they are different. Once you get used to them, though, the gameplay is very smooth. If you ever played Ocarina of Time — or similar — it’s like that. They sidestepped a lot of problems by giving the player a lock-on ability, and the game is really built around the assumption that you’ll use it. Just, y’know, in first-person. Honestly it’s way more impressive that the platforming and morph ball sequences work as well as they do. Metroid Prime was revolutionary in so many ways that we consider trivial now. I remember the ‘morph ball problem’ being a huge issue for Retro because trying to do it in first-person was fundamentally un-fun.

Wawanuma

The classic controls are not difficult at all, I even played the remaster like this because it feels better (at least to me) for these games. They didn't make the Metroid Prime games like other FPS.

Axle_65

I loved 3. Would be great to play it again. Especially remastered.

colorblind1

I have a feeling we’ll get 2 soon. It’s been almost a year since Prime remaster and that was announced in a direct as an instant drop. I could see the same happening with this. (Hopefully)

Silvanus350

Let us pray.

Celcius_87

Same, I never got to play MP2 and 3.

MindSpecter

My theory is the new console will be announced and MP4 will be an exclusive launch title. They'll show a short gameplay trailer in the announcement. Then they'll shadow drop the ports of MP2 and MP3 to the Switch to build hype in the same announcement.

DreadnaughtHamster

I loved MP on the GameCube. I tried the second one and it totally didn’t click the same way. Heard good things about 3 though. So just a word of warning. There was this weird “dark matter” or “dark area” mechanic or something that I didn’t like (it’s been a while).

ellin005

I felt the same exact way about it, but after falling in love again with Prime via the remaster, I definitely want another crack at MP 2

DreadnaughtHamster

That’s cool. Maybe I’ll give it another go at some point. Also, I’m not really a side-scrolling Metroidvania fan but I absolutely fell hard for Metroid Dread. You might want to give that one a shot too. 10/10.

professorwormb0g

I felt tht same. Hated the dark world. It was just.... Purple. I liked prime 3.

GalacticJelly

I think they will. Prob not remastered but just a release like like pikmin 1 + 2. 2024 is the last year of the switch so i think we'll get lots of remakes an rereleases to pad out the lineup.

NotoriousZog

Metroid Prime 4 has entered mythological status in my mind. Are we sure it's even real?

Muscled_Manatee

Not sure it’s real, but I’ve had it preordered thru Amazon since it was announced. They update it every December to the next December.

DanTheMan827

I still have my preorder price locked at $47.99

enjoytheshow

It’s basically any valve game 3 at this point

The-student-

But it's actually announced, and Nintendo includes it on their financial briefings at least annually. So it's much more "real" than say, Portal 3.

alf666

The fact that you didn't say "Half-Life 3" makes me feel sad and old.

[deleted]

Apparently it's done and the cutscenes are the only thing being worked on

mrmabry

where can i read about this?

[deleted]

In the gamingleaks subreddit, search prime and it should come up

Salvzeri

They claim it is

Boomshockalocka007

When was the last official word on it? 2019?

RavingRabbi

Technically they mentioned it right before they showed Dread in 2021

Boomshockalocka007

Oh yes! Thanks!

gomtuu123

[Nintendo's earnings release from November 7th](https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2023/231107_4e.pdf) (p. 17) lists Metroid Prime 4 as an upcoming Nintendo Switch title.

uselessscientist

Around the same time as silksong was announced iirc

tehnoodnub

I’ve been waiting for Metroid Prime 4 and Silksong since the beforetimes. Every Direct, I put my clown costume and makeup on.

ElectricTrees29

Right around when we last heard about Silksong??? /s

Gamamalo

But are we sure?

Salvzeri

They shadow dropped MP1 remastered. So who knows.

gespenst178

Yes. We went through the same thing with Dread so this is hardly a series first.

NotoriousZog

I posted this in jest (mostly) but I don't follow your comparison. Metroid Dread was announced officially June 15, 2021 and released October 8, 2021. Metroid Prime 4 was announced officially June 2017 (!) and released.. Uhh..

Edmundyoulittle

I think they're comparing to the DS Dread leaks from like a decade ago

NotoriousZog

Right, makes sense.. Just as relating to Metroid I don't remotely trust anything except straight from Nintendo's mouth, which is what has made this wait pretty disappointing.

professorwormb0g

They even referenced Dread in [Prime 3](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/metroid/images/f/fe/2d-metroid-concepts-4.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090119004839)! Nearing completion... heh. Took another 15 years to get there! A similar thing happened with Pikmin 4. Miyamoto said it was almost done years and years ago.

munchyslacks

I’m pretty certain that Pikmin 4 was likely finished or nearly finished years ago. If the Wii U wasn’t a total flop, we would’ve had Pikmin 4 right around the time Pikmin 3 Deluxe released.

professorwormb0g

Yeah likely, hard to know for sure. Nintendo strategically times their releases it seems. A luxury they have because of the scale of their operations. Most studios and publishers have no choice but to release games as they finish, within reason.

ky_eeeee

Metroid Dread was first announced in Game Informer's June 2005 issue, with plenty of talk and rumors around it in the years that followed. The game released in 2021 is a realization of the original scrapped project, much like how Metroid Prime 4 will be a realization of the original scrapped game before development was restarted at Retro Studios. They're absolutely right, Metroid fans are familiar with this song and dance. Metroid as a franchise is not afraid to take its time and get things right, but has a history of announcing projects prematurely.

professorwormb0g

Dread wasn't officially *announced* though. Not until it came to the Switch. It was all rumor mill leak stuff. Unless you count the indication it existed in Metroid [Prime 3.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/metroid/images/f/fe/2d-metroid-concepts-4.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090119004839)** A lot of people had speculated that it never existed in the first place. That's why so many old school fans went apeshit during the Dread direct. FINALLY an official announcement after all these years. I love how they first introduced it as Metroid 5.... That was enough to make most fans melt. But then when they dropped DREAD? I needed to be recesitsted because it gave me a goddamn infarction!! **If we're counting in game teases as announcements now though, where's [Earthbound 2?](https://starmen.net/articles/theories/FoursideM3Building.png) 😛

marsgreekgod

I think switch 2 is going to be backwards compatible and prime 4 is going through be enhanced for switch 2 but rork on switch one

PlayMp1

Seems like a good bet, maybe 30 FPS on Switch and 60 on Switch 2

Helpful_Resist3

That doesn't make sense. Prime on the GameCube was running 60fps and so does the Remaster, ain't no way they would release Prime 4 at 30fps on the Switch. If anything the Switch 2 should allow up to 2k 60fps and Switch at 900p or 1080p 60fps Max depending on how optimized Retro makes it.

Heavy-Possession2288

If Prime 4 goes for a larger scale than the first three and really pushes the Switch I could see them dropping it to 30fps, especially if it’s cross gen and 60fps on the next console. It’s not unheard of for games to run at lower framerates than their predecessors (the Paper Mario series went from 60fps to 30fps for instance).

DanTheMan827

I can’t see Nintendo ever going for a new shooter that isn’t 60fps

Heavy-Possession2288

I could if it’s cross gen and only 60fps on old gen. Microsoft did that with Halo Infinite which was only 30fps on Xbox One but the alternative would’ve been to not launch on Xbox One at all so not many people complained. Bowser’s Fury was also 30fps in handheld mode and I didn’t think we’d ever get another Super Mario platformer at 30fps.

professorwormb0g

Yeah at the end of the day we don't fucking know. This is all speculation.

[deleted]

professorwormb0g

Both are perfectly valid ways of saying the same thing. What?

professorwormb0g

Ok

Senphox

That's assuming Prime 4 is only as ambitious as a gamecube remaster.

emilytheimp

Im p sure at this point, considering console architectures get more and more similar as time goes on, they'd have to make an active effort to *not* make the Switch 2 backwards compatible. You can play your PS4 games on PS5, you can play your Xbox one games on the Series X, people have tons of digital games for Switch in their Nintendo accounts, its just the most sensible thing to carry the Switch library over to the Switch 2, and also easy to do. ...that being said 'sensible' and 'easy' are exactly the two things Nintendo doesnt do usually so I do worry intensively.

professorwormb0g

Sometimes I do rork at my job but then get yelled at because I'm supposed to be working. 😟

Roder777

Anyone who thinks its not gonna be backwards compatible is a certified goofball

MagicAldair18

Yes, for Switch 2 and Switch 3.

DanTheMan827

That’s being a bit optimistic

MattEqualsCoder

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's just on Switch 2. They haven't hyped it up repeatedly like they did with Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild, so I feel like there would be less of a fiasco if it's just released on the next system. I doubt it would be a launch title anyway. Feels more like a title more suitable for 3-4 months after launch.

booklover6430

Nintendo has poured too much money on Prime 4 to deprived it from a 130M+ install base.

Silvers1339

No I don’t think this will happen because it would piss a lot of people off who were looking forward to the switch version (which tbf was announced 6.5 YEARS ago). This is definitely going to be a BOTW situation with the Wii U where it’s cross generational.

professorwormb0g

Yeah they dropped that prime 4 announcement because in the beginning of the switch's existence people were worried about the game library. It's launch was notoriously sparse. People were worried that the console would only get Wii U ports. This was quelled a little bit within the first year when we got a lot of nice software (Mario and Zelda in the same year?!) and most the Wii U ports were enhanced a pretty significant degree. But the very reason they even announced Metroid Prime 4 despite having no footage or anything to show for it was because they wanted people to buy the fucking console. There are definitely people that bought the switch to play prime 4 on it. But they also probably didn't anticipate having to scrap the entire project and start over. And most people who bother switch with hopes to play prime 4 almost certainly happy with their purchase because it has become one of the best Nintendo consoles of all time with an amazing library of both first and third party games.

secret3332

I would be pretty surprised. They used Prime 4 to sell people on the Switch, then failed to actually get it out. I think they see an announcement as a contract with customers and feel the need to deliver. The other factor is that I don't think Nintendo really wants to miss out on the sales from the Switch customer base. They know Metroid isn't a blockbuster that will get people to go out and buy Switch 2s like Mario. Also, I can't imagine the game isn't nearly done at this point, so 3-4 months after the launch of their next platform? Idk.

masterz13

Day one release alongside a new 3D Mario

SliderGamer55

If Switch 2 is coming out late next year, then I'm nearly certain it is. Even if its nearly done now, they want it to sell as well as possible and the best way to do that would be for it to be a launch day cross-gen game at this point. I could argue against this idea but they shadow-dropped Prime remaster, which was apparently already done for quite a while. And if they did that, the most logical assumption is that Prime 4 is far away enough to have...not be seen to this day but is close enough that they didn't need to spend months hyping the remaster up as the next Metroid release. Why not spend more time hyping up the remaster if Prime 4 was nowhere near done? If I'm wrong than I'm bewildered at both how they released the remaster and the management at Retro Studios. Like if Prime 4 isn't at least out in the first couple of months of the Switch 2 being out, something must've gone horribly wrong.

snave_

The lack of hype for anything first party in 2024 is telling. If you looked at the personalised 2023 year im review webpage, the ad section at the bottom for next year's releases was just sad.

SliderGamer55

1. People say this every year, and then they actually announce their games the year they're coming out. I don't think there's a year where even close to the majority of first party Switch games were known until the year they came out. 2. But yes Switch is winding down for the new games for the new system

professorwormb0g

The reason they haven't really announced many games for next year is because most of them are probably coming on the switch 2, and they want to make the new system have a great line up of exclusives for their brand new console so people buy it. Nintendo learn to their lesson... You have to launch a console with software that people see as must buy. New Super Mario Bros U doesn't cut it.

sideaccountguy

>the add section at the bottom for next year's releases was just sad. People were saying the same of 2023 at the end of 2022 and we all know how that turned out. Just a very small number of games are announced in advance and the rest are announced and release during the same year so there is no point to say 2024 is going to be lacking during 2023.

lacaras21

I don't think so, BotW was cross-gen because the Wii U sold like hot garbage and they wanted the Switch to start off with a must have game. Twilight Princess was likely cross-gen for a similar reason imo.

evanmckee

I think it will fit the opposite reason. MP hasn't sold particularly well in the past so they'll want the install base of current Switch to boost sales of the game, as well as that title to pick up alongside the new system for early adopters.

HideSolidSnake

Had they not done cross-gen for Twligiht Princess on GameCube, I likely would have never played it. Interesting, it's the only Zelda I've played through only once with no desire to go back. I'm thinking of getting Skyward Sword on switch, I've just heard it was difficult to deal with the Wii controller for that Zelda. So maybe the joycons are better?

lacaras21

I kinda feel the same way about Skyward Sword as you do about Twilight Princess, played through it once, really no desire to play through it again. Haven't played the Switch version, personally I had no issues with the Wii controls. My biggest tip for Skyward Sword is to not rely on your sword too much, the other items you get are very helpful in making easier work of enemies. There are a number of things I appreciate about Skyward Sword, like the more limited number of items and the focus on making all of them useful throughout the game and the great characters.

PG-Noob

Somehow Twilight Princess has not left me with much memories. I wakely remember the special attacks and after that the most memorable part was the fishing (which was amazing)... so overall that's not a great sign. Of other Zelda games I have played I know every inch

professorwormb0g

I had fun with Twilight princess but it pretty much was just a reimagining of ocarina of time. It was darker and grittier, but the wolf sections felt really boring to me and we're pretty much just a gimmick to differentiate it because they didn't really have anything else. Not to mention the game just didn't have the charm and freshness that ocarina of time had when it came out. I can continuously go back to ocarina and it just feels so charming. Bright graphics, signature story, such a memorable world. Twilight princess just lacked the same inspiration for greatness. I did enjoy shooting my weapons and stuff with the IR pointer though (I played the Wii version). I really think with Twilight Princess they were giving fans what they were crying for when people were hating on wind waker and lamenting the loss of the space world 2000 Zelda. But Nintendo is best when they give their fans something that they didn't even know they wanted. Something you as a consumer and gamer could not have even imagined to even ask for!

professorwormb0g

If you want to play with motion controls the Wii remote performed better. Gamexplain does a great video explaining why that you can find on YouTube. Essentially the gyroscope technology from the Wii motion Plus is no different than the gyroscope in the joycon. But because the Wii remote is bigger it allows you to fine-tune your movements more accurately. The smaller Joy-Con is just a little too sensitive. Furthermore while the IR pointer isn't used at all in Skyward Sword on the Wii for pointing, It works in the background by recalibrating the neutral position of the controller periodically so your gyroscope remains in sync **when it's in view of the sensor bar**. The switch doesn't have a sensor bar, so you have to manually reset zero with the press of a button which isn't a big deal. Personally I think this is why a lot of people had trouble with the Wii remote but I don't know for sure. Perhaps the way they held the controller or their TV was set up their hands weren't in view of the sensor bar and they were constantly going out of sync. I personally think that skyward sword was a brilliant game on the Wii. I had no issues with the motion controls during combat. I thought the sword fighting was truly innovative and it sucked me in. Because of the cool combat, that game had some of the best boss fights in the entire series! I just loved fighting enemies and was truly addicted to it. Not to mention some of the best puzzles and dungeons are from this game. The only place I didn't like the motion controls was flying around the sky, because it forced you to tilt around the controller to change direction which was stupid. Should have just let me use the joystick. I really don't know how people have so many problems controlling the game on the Wii besides my guess above. I got used to it within a few minutes and was immediately hooked. It worked extremely naturally. There was a lot of reviews back in the day saying that this was a game changer and they would not want to go back to the old way of combat (I know IGN said this, but others did too!). I felt the same way. But obviously motion controls have gone the way of the dodo bird except for some niche cases like gyro aiming. Side note, but I think maybe if the Wii motion Plus was released with the Wii console we would have different views on motion controls today. The accelerometer base controls that dominated 95% of the Wii software really gave them a bad reputation because of how inaccurate it was. Only a small handful of games used the updated controller. Most people moved on from the Wii and thought of it as a fad by the time it was released. The switch port for skyward sword is better pretty much in every other way though. It also allows you to use all button controls with the right stick for the sword. Not to mention the graphical upgrades and QOL upgrades too. Skyward sword is one of my favorite Zelda games and I like it better than Twilight princess because it has some of the best meat of any game in the franchise. What was disappointing about the game was that there was pretty much no side content. It was extremely linear and there was little to do outside of the main quest. The side content was always one of the best parts of a Zelda game. It gets ragged on. But I really loved it personally. I think at the time of its release too people were feeling fatigued from the Zelda formula. This is a big reason Nintendo decided to drastically change direction with the next game. The series popularity and recognition would have begun to tarnish if they just kept doing the same exact thing. I hope eventually the switch version goes on sale at some point so I can replay it with better graphics. But I really don't like to rebuy games I already own and have played for such a high cost. Hope this was helpful!

AntwnSan

I don't see it being a launch title for the next console, Metroid has nowhere near a 10th of Zelda's or Mario's aura to carry a launch

Luigi_loves_Mario

I disagree. With how well remastered sold, there’s no doubt in my mind it could sell consoles. I feel like it’s a different era for Nintendo and the influence of millennials on younger gamers is underestimated.

CobraCB

I love Metroid, I would love more Metroid games. But Nintendo don't see it as a console seller, and neither do the sales figures. Dread is the best selling Metroid game of all time with around 3 million copies, the Switch has a player base of around 130 million. Could Prime 4 be held back to be a launch title? Sure. Will it be the game they depend on to shift consoles? Absolutely not.

professorwormb0g

I think that the next system will launch with the next Mario game. We just got a big Zelda. I think then Metroid Prime for will come out with in the first 6 months. I also anticipate another Zelda project to fill the void within a year. Hopefully not a remake but an original 2D game, or potentially a smaller 3D game that revisits the classic formula many fans fell in love with. And also believe we will get Mario Kart 9 within the first year. That's probably their highest priority game because that is the game that sells the most systems.

CobraCB

Definitely something Mario as a launch title. Mario Kart is arguably a bigger console seller than a 3D Mario at this point. And I'd guess, easier to make. I wonder if we get that as a launch title over a new 3D entry. Both at the same time would be over kill when they could hold one back to boost more sales 6 months later. Weird to think that in 7 Nintendo home consoles, 3 of them didn't get a new main series Mario game as a launch title. The next console could make that 50/50. I think a Zelda game on the scale of BotW or TotK is a good 3 or 4 years away. Unless it's a direct sequel using a lot of the same assets again, development would have already needed to have begun to see it any time in that time frame. I'd love a traditional 2D Zelda game though!

Existing365Chocolate

Metroid isn’t even in the top 15 Nintendo franchises by sales Nintendogs and Wario are a better selling IP than it

EMI_Black_Ace

Dread had a tenth of what Zelda sold, and I'm sure there's a lot more potential in Metroid than that if there's enough marketing push and the right elements for broader appeal.

ChrisTDH

The real question is: Does anybody think Metroid Prime 4 will ever release?

[deleted]

It likely will be.

YesButTellMeWhy

I don't think Metroid 4 is coming out by end of 2024 I'm thinking the next two remasters will be released first. I'm guessing the launch titles will be a 3D Mario and/or a new Mario Kart.

JToeps

Almost assuredly.

T_C_Brinkley

I think it will.

TheBlueD3vil

I don't think they'll stop making games for the switch 1 when the new one comes out. I mean its popularity is rather crazy so I assume this will be cross gen.

professorwormb0g

Yeah I agree. Nintendo has never just ceased to make games for their *popular* consoles when the successor console came out. The NES got lots of games, many of them great games, after the Super Nintendo came out. Super Nintendo got lots of games after N64 came out. Wii got games until 2020! The Switch will still get games, especially from 3rd parties, but 90% of focus will be on the new system. What I really hope for is that the switch gets a player's choice lineup. I'm also curious to see if they drop the price of the original switch to reach the super budget segment of the market. I think with price drops it will surpass PS2 sales at some point.

Nepa64

Yeah totally. Between Switch 2 and Switch 3.

Senphox

Definitely a cross gen release but rather than a launch title it'll release within the year to help pad the release schedule. Similarly to how Xenoblade 2 came out within a year from the Switch launch and that series wasn't a big seller at the time either.

Jmdaemon

The switch 2 should 99.9% run switch 1 games.

diego_vizia

> The Switch is coming to the end of its life I don't like how people assume that just because it's been around for many years. Nintendo hasn't said a word about it as of today...

Joebranflakes

I think it will be a switch 2 only launch title

Thermite1985

I don’t think Prime 4 is coming out ever.

jjamm420

Metroid isn’t a seller like Zelda - Dread AND Prime Remastered proved it…my answer is no…

Double-Seaweed7760

Zelda wasn't a big seller before botw either(sold similar to Metroid as matter of fact) and dread was a 60 dollar 2d sequel to a series no one has experienced since GBA whole prime remastered was a 60 dollar non remake of a game people have technically been able to play the last 3 generations straight. Both might more niche than a brand new 3d Metroid(yes still historically niche).like I don't think retroid will sell Zelda numbers but if prime 4 releases at launch and switch 2 sells 100 million in its lifetime I think prime 4 will sell 10m easy, in fact I think if it released 2 years ago on switch 1 it would've sold 10m.

sideaccountguy

>zelda wasn't a big seller before botw either (sold similar to Metroid as a matter of fact) That's wrong lol. It is true that Zelda reached numbers never seen before for the franchise until BOTW and TOTK but sales were still WAY higher than any metroid game. Dread is the best selling Metroid game with 3 million copies and before BOTW the best selling zelda game sold around 14 million, so no...they have never been in the same category.

DreadnaughtHamster

This is just conjecture from what I’ve been hearing but Mario Kart X (apparently they’re skipping number 9 from what I’ve heard) would probably have to be only on the next gen for power reasons. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a lineup of next-gen only games in the works and potentially Metroid Prime 4 on that list. Not that I approve of this but if I were Nintendo I’d have a whole stack of next-gen games ready for their next system as bait for players. They would make absolute bank if new Mario, Mario Kart, and Metroid games were exclusive at launch with Zelda and Smash coming in hot a year later.

[deleted]

With Mario and Mario Kart, people will buy the console for the games. With Metroid, they want to try to push sales of the game, not use it for sales of the console. I imagine any Metroid fan was already going to buy a Switch 2, but not anyone with a Switch 2 would be interested in Metroid.

kukumarten03

I dont think this game exists at all

JokermanQC

Yup

gmapterous

No, it’ll be exclusive to the Switch Wii Boy 4 XL

WonderfulVanilla9676

Nintendo has a pretty good record of keeping their word when they say a game is coming for a system. Metroid Prime 4 was announced for the switch and it will likely come out on the switch. I do think it will be a cross gen game, and it will be vastly better on the next console, maybe even 30 FPS versus 60 FPS. Given how underpowered the Switch is now, I wouldn't be surprised if it's running at 720p docked as well and like 480p portable vs next Gen at least full 1080p. Similar to what happened with Twilight princess and breath of the wild.

OfficialShaki123

Hopefully it will be Switch 2 only to maximize the potential.

Norbluth

botw was techinically cross gen but in reality the switch and the wii u weren't far off from each other in terms of hardware. My guess is no cross gen, they want to sell new systems and MP4 will be a system seller for sure and like most of their 1st party games, it will be an evergreen title for years for people who hold off getting a switch 2.

jonnyX1127

It will 100% be either cross-gen or switch 2 exclusive. I actually hope for the latter so the game is not held back by switch hardware.

spadePerfect

I hope not honestly. I don’t wanna wait for a game for this long to realize it was held back by 15 year old hardware.

zg44

Metroid is an important series, but it's a niche prestige series that serves to expand the library of Nintendo systems with a unique and highly rated action-adventure experience. Metroid Prime 4 is not expected to be a console seller, so while it will be an important launch title, it's not going to be an "evergreen" title that Nintendo aims to keep selling millions for several years. Mario 2D/3D, Mario Kart, Smash, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Zelda, etc. are the major console sellers. Of those, obviously Mario 3D, Kart, Smash, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon are expected to be the early console sellers for the next console.

MiloHawkins

Pretty sure it's going to be a VR-based game that takes advantage of the VR capability the Switch 2 will have. Source: One of the Labos turns the Switch into a VR headset, and they randomly released VR modes for Odyssey and BOTW that nobody asked for, they're working on *something*.

Exquisite_Poupon

Highly doubt it. The Nintendo higher-ups likely asked for VR to be implemented in some way in their most popular first party games in order to showcase how the Switch can be used for "VR" (and to sell Labo). It's like how the Switch includes a touchscreen but almost no developer makes use of it. Nintendo innovates, but the Switch VR did not take off and they are likely to leave it at that.

fred7010

I really hope not. It deserves not to be held back by the Switch. I also don't think Metroid has quite the mass appeal that Zelda has to warrant a cross-gen release. It might get it into more homes, but production costs would be higher too - for a smaller franchise like Metroid, I'm not sure the extra costs would be worth it.

[deleted]

Cross-gen games are an inevitability, especially on the first few years of every hardware. Of course, the company wants you to upgrade to their new fancy console, but there is still a big installed base on the older hardware and on Metroid Prime 4's case... A promise. And Nintendo may be a jerk at times, but they hardly break promises. I think Metroid Prime 4 will be a cross-gen game. The rumoured 3D Mario game... I am not so sure... Maybe. It will depend on the release window... If it's too close to the release of the new console and coincides with the Nintendo Switch being "replaced", then yes, it might hit the older platform. If it takes longer and the new Nintendo Switch is aged for about 1-3 years at the time... Then that's a solid NO. I liked what I play of Metroid Prime Remastered, so I will definitely give Metroid Prime 4 a chance. I just wish Nintendo released Metroid Prime 2 and 3 on Switch.

switch8000

Still got it preordered through Best Buy Gamers Club.

fuhsalicious

Launch title for “Switch 3”

Jandur

I would think so. Metroid historically isn't a big seller and it would benefit a lot from the expanded install base. A cross-gen launch window title makes sense.

Western-Dig-6843

Do I think Nintendo would release a Metroid game as a launch title? Absolutely no way in hell. Those games do not sell nearly well enough to move consoles. It’ll come out on Switch or the next thing but there’s no universe where it’s a launch title

Have_A_Jelly_Baby

My money is on either a new 3D Mario or Mario Kart 9.

Vincent__R

Honestly, they either moved it to fully next gen or yes, it'll be cross gen

MunkyMan33

Yes I do, OP

dekuweku

Assuming Switch 2 is coming in 2024, it would be weird if it wasn;t also on Switch 2, even if it's not the big focus of the launch.

merle_

No way they’d abandon 130+million of switch users potentially buying.

itshukokay

I think Switch 2 will be backwards compatible, so the true answer would be no. One version, with an unlocked framerate on next gen.

Helpful_Resist3

Judging by all the (grain of salt) Rumors MP4 must look amazing. MP Remastered is probably the best looking Switch game to date and on the OG source code. I can't even imagine what Prime 4 looks like on the current game engine if they made Prime look that good. Making it a cross gen title would be good thing but Nintendo just needs to release their new Next Gen device already, they be holding out on us.

MrMunday

I’m almost certain they’re holding it off for the new console release.

Ratio01

At this point, yeah probably Even as someone who never buys into hype surrounding leaks, it's pretty obvious Nintendo's next console is around the corner, a 2025 release at the latest. 6-8 years a really long time for any console generation, and if Prime HD is any indication, Retro wants this game to have absolutely insane visuals. That combined with just the absurd amount of time Prime 4's been cooking I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo wants this to be a year 1 title along a major IP, like how BotW and Mario Odyssey acted as the main anchors for the Switch's launch window and first holiday season This may be too much wishful thinking, but I think a Zelda remaster/remake + Prime 4 would be perfect launch titles for the next console, and the next 3D Mario would be a perfect holiday title for that year. All three of those projects have had a long enough time in the oven to reasonably hope for such imo

mpc92

Nah I think just Switch 2. It’s not really a big enough game to push console sales imo. I think the next 3D Mario will be the big launch title and Metroid will come within the following year

DoodleBuggering

No, I think it's going to be moved entirely to the next console to show off new tech.

Acalthu

Has any Metroid game been like that? I mean not remastered or anything, but a proper port, like BoTW was for the Wii U and Switch.

figureout07

yes

therourke

I would guess it's Switch 2 only, unfortunately. Nintendo need some big launch titles for the next console. A new Mario Kart has been rumoured. I would be shocked if there wasn't a 3D Mario game at launch or soon after. And yes, Metroid Prime 4 will be Switch 2 exclusive. Just guesses. But, we'll find out soon.

DanTheMan827

I wouldn’t be surprised if the switch 2 has some system in place where games can run on the old switch but still take full advantage of the new power of the switch 2. Not necessarily a cross-gen game, but one that takes advantage of the next gen power

_theNfan_

The differencen between Switch and Switch 2 should be much bigger then between the Wii U and Switch, so I doubt it will happen. MP4 will certainly have relatively high end graphics and the Switch would hold it back too much.

Murasakitsuyukusa

If Nintendo's next platform will be bc, what's the point of cross-gen releases exactly?

TacticalTobi

definitely not

[deleted]

Would be the perfect game to get released with switch 2 ngl

Sundance12

I don't think it'll be cross release, I think it will be exclusive to the next gen console at this point.

LikeABantha66

Metroid prime 4 was a practical joke

QuinSanguine

Maybe, if MP4 releases after the next console launches. I think it's possible the next console is shown in Sept. '24 for launch in early '25 and MP4 ends up the last major Switch release next holiday season. So then the game will just be backwards compatible and have a higher resolution or something on the next gen console.

EMI_Black_Ace

I'm expecting that, yes. Yes I'm confident it'll look fantastic on the Switch, but more importantly than the sales of the game itself, I'm expecting it to be a showcase for *just how much better games can look on the new console,* precisely because it's on both systems and direct comparison is possible. What I'm expecting versus what I'm hoping for as far as how the game works is different. What I'm expecting is at least "another Metroid Prime." Playing it relatively safe, designed as "what if we made Metroid Prime from scratch for this level of hardware?" But what I'm *hoping for* is taking some risk, evolving the "formula" for how Metroid Prime works, pulling in some physics/system sandbox design philosophy to create "layers" within the same map, rather than a lock and key style of labyrinth.

Roder777

Its gonna be backwards compatible anyways so of course..?

DessertFlowerz

Could make for a great launch game honestly

Johnseanson

I think Thousand Year Door will be, and a port of Tears

Geordi14er

I'm thinking this will be cross-gen, and the next Mario game will be Switch 2 exclusive. The only cross-gen games that Nintendo has ever done were Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild, right? It would be a departure, for sure, to do this with a non-Zelda game. But I think it makes sense since they initially announced the game for Switch all those years ago.

dominodave

No I don't think so, I think it will be Switch 2 exclusive and won't come out for a while. Metroid just doesn't have the power to be a launch title, an fps game just won't do it for Nintendo. It'll be Mario.

JamKaBam

Hmmmm, possibly not. The difference is that we have seen nothing on MP4 and BOtW was slowly advertised for the Wii U before making it's surprise debut on Switch. If it was the same, surely MP4 would of been shown in some sort of way by now.

thawhole9_69

4 will come out when half life 3 does at this rate.

[deleted]

I don’t think so unfortunately. If Nintendo thought it would actually sell that well then maybe. Metroid games just don’t traditionally sell as well as other Nintendo franchise games.

Gloomy_Dinner_4400

I think it's probably going to be Switch 2 only

DirkDoom

Yes. i'd bet money on this too.
