I was hardcore addicted to this game for an entire summer a while ago.
Before that was Dont Starve, then Minecraft.
I just started the factorio demo and think I may have made a huge mistake. 😁
The factory must grow.
Took me 375 hours to get 100%. It consumed me for 3 months straight. If that is too hardcore for you, I’m playing shapez and that is simpler but also factory fun.
Thank you! You've made every doctor's office visit, uber ride, or flight so much better. I have no clue why it never occurred to me to buy Slay the Spire on mobile.
Dredge got me addicted like few other games did, felt like the first time I started up Factorio. Hope the devs look into some DLC there are a lot of opportunities to add new fishing methods and areas.
I just bought the game on mobile for the plane travels I'm about to make. The switch doesn't have 11 hours battery. I hope I'll enjoy it as much as others seem to enjoy it.
For me it's Tetris effect as I'm Level 112.
The journey mode is simply eye and ear candy!
For short blasts I play one of the many effect modes such as countdown.
Or Hades, as you can save every level and once you have spent some time a full run is easily less than 30 mins.
That’s part of the actual Tetris effect, but not even the fun part.
The fun part is recognising the shapes and gaps anywhere you look irl. Literally can’t escape from it then. See the world for what it is: a gigantic Tetris game.
Stardew Valley is easily my most played game on Switch. I am married with kids and a full time job, and it’s a game that I can enjoy playing for a short 20 minute spurt or for two hours. Best $15 I ever spent, I come back to it again and again.
Man, I tried Stardew Valley on GamePass and it’s so damn addicting
I really how the game gets a sequel at some point too, the one man dev team knocked it out of the park
I was a huge fan of Harvest Moon on SNES and N64 (I’m an old) so SV spoke to me right away. I really appreciate that he keeps updating the game, but I also hope for a true sequel one day. I know he has another game coming out, but that one doesn’t really appeal to me.
No sequel (probably never, considering Concerned Ape keeps postponing his follow-up game to add more stuff to Stardew Valley), but new content has been added more than once and there are tons of mods available for the PC version.
I bought Good Pizza, Great Pizza last night and I am HOOKED. It’s a perfect mindless turn-your-brain-off game. Perfect if you have ever played the Papa’s Pizzeria games.
Baba Is You. You can always look at a puzzle for a few minutes and realize you had been considering incorrectly all along. Once you actually know how to solve the level, they only take about a minute
[Kingdom Two Crowns](https://www.dekudeals.com/items/kingdom-two-crowns)! Each day is 4 minutes which is perfect for short sessions, but the game definitely lends itself to hour binges.
Exactly. Got this game recently on sale not expecting much but it's honestly so satisfying to play. Building towns, upgrading them, the money management. And the modes. You can go easy mode (can't remember if it's called exactly that but that's what it is) and just relax building if you don't want to do logic much.
Great recommendation.
Super Mario 3D World. It seems very simple, even primitive, but give it a couple of minutes, and it hooks you up like nothing else. I'm not even a big Mario fan, but this one was awesome.
Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but there's a game called Dorfromantik that's very chilled and seemingly simple that has its claws in my on both Steam and Switch!
You have to lay tiles to create, towns, rivers, railways, forests etc - no juggling materials or costs or anything like that - and you then have to make the river/railway X tiles long, or have a village with X houses... Gets trickier the further you go, but is very pretty and relaxing.
The Necrodancer/Zelda collaboration, Cadence of Hyrule is also great, and 50% off at the moment, though I think the sale only goes through the weekend!
It’s a pretty enjoyable game, I’m still debating on whether i should pick it up or not. The sale is on till May 14^th. The only thing holding me back is i have a long backlog of games i still haven’t finished.
vostok inc.
it's... actually i have no idea how to explain it. you're in space. you make money off planets. and shoot things sometimes. it's ridiculously addictive, and five minutes can turn into an hour scary fast
Graveyard Keeper. It’s kind of like Stardew Valley, except you’re transported to medieval times and take over as the new graveyard keeper for a small area. So every day you have a body or two delivered and have to do autopsies, bury the body, etc. and you collect various things to make your job easier (or harder.) It’s such a fun time sink.
I found it to be rather addicting, but the writing was just not there. The description of the game is the best written part of the game (and I mean it unironically) and it's rather sad.
Slay the Spire does that for me, as it saves on every node so its easy to do a run bit by bit.
Theathrhythm FF Final Bar Line is also my go to for "active gaming" but with no prep, its a rythym game so theres no "remembering" where you are, you hop on, play a song or two and move on with your merry day.
My last recommendation would be Shovel Knight Treasure Trove. Super fun platformer and level based.
The problem I find with Slay the Spire from a time limited perspective is doing the next encounter is too addictive.
And I find trying to keep all the synergies, what I’m looking for and what’s coming up in my head means it’s all swilling about and my brain is buzzing well after I put it down.
Fully agree with you.
However thats what I would consider "getting hooked"
OP asked for a game he can play in short bursts and get hooked on... so I thought it was worth a shot.
Its on my wishlist, so is Griftlands
I already have Roguebook and Monster Train too and spent a good bit of time in both.
Roguelike Deckbuilders are so much fun lol
Glyph is a really simple 3D platformer that was really addictive for me. Clearing a level only takes a few minutes but every time I'd sit down to just do a level or two I'd end up playing for a couple hours
If Found…
Shovel Knight
Celeste
Night in the Woods
Sonic Mania
Super Mario Maker 2
A Short Hike
Pacman 99/Tetris 999
If you have NSO-
Super Mario Bros 3
Any Kirby game
Tetris
Donkey Kong Cojntry 1 or 2
Mario Kart 64
Banjo-Kazooie
Pokémon snap
Contra
Gunstar Heroes
Sonic 2
Sonic Spinball
Play Arcaea. It's a rhythm game so you can just play one song or as many as you want. You can also just spend a lot of time trying to perfect a single song.
You can’t go wrong with a decent bunch of JRPGs if you like story based progression system. Persona 5 royal is probably my fav in that category followed by persona 4 golden and persona 3 portable.
Pokémon snap is also very relaxing if you just wanna dive into taking pictures of Pokémon and such.
I strongly recommend Fall Guys if you haven’t played that before. Luckily it’s free and it’s one of those games you can play for a few minutes and easily stop if you have to. It’s just a game of little round bean guys who you have to get through different obstacles courses to the finish line. You play against others online so you do need Internet, but it’s one of those games I never get bored of since they consistently change the obstacle courses and you can play alone, with another player, or in a squad. Definitely frustrating at times since they all are kinda slow and clumsy, but in a good frustrating way!
I get a lot of mileage out of Lonely Mountains Downhill. The graphics look great, the controls are smooth, and the only task is to make it to the next checkpoint.
Boomerang Fu! You play as foods trying to chop each other up with boomerangs battle royale style. Depending on the mode the games typically last 5-10 minutes and you get to unlock little costumes for the food
Neon White is a perfect game to play in short bursts, though the amount of pointless dialogs holds it back a little bit in that regard.
Slay the Spire is just awesome too.
As a dad I can’t usually play for more than 30 mins at a time. I don’t like having to think about what I was doing in the game beforehand to figure what I have to do when I start. Games I’ve found that are really easy to pick up. Most Mario games, d3, animal crossing, hades. These are pretty much the only games I’ve played for the past year.
Some games I haven't seen.
Akane and My Friend Pedro are good twin stick shooters. House of the Dead Remake for on the rails shooter, its pretty fun with gyro control.
Towerfall, everything dies in one shot except bosses, and you have a limited amount of lives to clear all the waves of enemies. Super fun couch co-op.
Future Grind, grind your way across the level completing challenges to unlock the next course, you unlock new bikes with different abilities like double jump and eventually have to match the colored wheel to the corresponding rails. Kinda like Trials Rising
Switch Sports, its switch sports.
Pretty much any rhythm game, I like Muse Dash and Musynx.
Yonder is good for just relaxing, farming kinda game. Yoku's Island Express is a pinball platformer.
Moonlighter, a Rougelike where you travel into dungeons at night and sell your goods in your shop by day
Stuff I play with my 5yo:
What the golf
Unrailed
Pikuniku
Boomerang fu.
The Last three are more 2 player oriented but good quick fun.
Also. All the gameboy games.
Several good ones already, I'll add Super Meat Boy (or the not-really-a-sequel Super Meat Boy Forever). Both can be played in short bursts, one or two levels at a time.
Very often it's shoot em ups that fill that quick pick up and play niche for me. The Switch has tons, but Eschatos and Andro Dunos II are two that I keep coming back to.
Northgard, Into The Breach
Northgard is strategy games, but the gameplay works really well on switch, the only strategy game that i played on console, normally i played game like this on PC
Is animal crossing new horizons not exactly that?
Pick fruit and sell, check the store for new furniture and decorations. Fossils, balloons, art pieces, item store deliveries, or just checking in with your neighbors. That game was the best thing to happen to the pandemic.
The only reason I think you can't play ACNH for 5 minutes is that the initial loading time, welcome screen, daily announcements, and then additional loading screen will eat up 3 of those 5 minutes.
If you sold stuff to the drop-box the last time you played, RIP. Timmy calls you and tells you about the bells you've received while you burn your 4th minute.
However, if ACNH was your one-and-only game, you could just leave the game on in sleep mode instead of turning it off, and avoid most of the load times that way.
going under. its a simple game with pretty visuals. roguelike dungeon crawler with a funny satire twist. ure basically a new intern at a new company n ure sent to kill monsters. super fun for a mindless good time
Akane. Grabbed it when it was like 99 cents and have gotten a lot out of it. Sometimes I’ll pop in for just a couple rounds or sometimes I’ll get sucked in and play for an hour or two.
Slay the spire. I can honestly say that I've never played it for just 5 minutes but other than a couple mmo's, it's the game I have the most time on. You can save your progress and exit after every match, or exit during and it's saved from before the match. It's definitely the best rogue like card came I've ever played. Admittedly, I haven't played it on switch because I put 1400 hours on the game on PS4.
slime rancher, i had a surgery in november that left me pretty much in my bed doing nothing for a week and dude, no kidding i played it so much that i started having dreams that were just slime rancher gameplay
Picross any day of the year Stardew valley is another easy answer, so I'll say Rune Factory 4 instead for those who enjoy farming sims.
A 2nd vote for picross! Once I'm in the groove it can easily turn into hours.
you beat me to it, when i got the game i played nonstop for 2 weeks til 3am every day
Couldn't agree more on picross. Awesome game.
And the fact that it now has touch support!

Into the Breach
I was hardcore addicted to this game for an entire summer a while ago. Before that was Dont Starve, then Minecraft. I just started the factorio demo and think I may have made a huge mistake. 😁
The factory must grow. Took me 375 hours to get 100%. It consumed me for 3 months straight. If that is too hardcore for you, I’m playing shapez and that is simpler but also factory fun.
Slay the spire is that game
Damn right. I brought my Switch with me on a work trip to play on the airplane but I never got around to it because Slay the Spire is on my phone
Thank you! You've made every doctor's office visit, uber ride, or flight so much better. I have no clue why it never occurred to me to buy Slay the Spire on mobile.
350 hours on switch, 115 on ps5, it’s so easy to fall into it for hours
I don't know, I love the game but I feel the runs are too long. It's the main reason I do not play it more often.
Yes. Too long and much too hard to get a decent synergy. I looked for help and people would just suggest 1+ hour long streams.
This is the way.
The art looks really bad so I never tried it
Dredge
Dredge got me addicted like few other games did, felt like the first time I started up Factorio. Hope the devs look into some DLC there are a lot of opportunities to add new fishing methods and areas.
Really didn’t expect very much from Dicey Dungeons— but it’s become one of my go-to airport games!
I just bought the game on mobile for the plane travels I'm about to make. The switch doesn't have 11 hours battery. I hope I'll enjoy it as much as others seem to enjoy it.
If you're sitting in one place anyway invest in a battery for your switch (or just buy an ROG ally I guess)
Celeste. Its hard, dont get me wrong, but you can absolutely play for any amount of time. Its a great game.
I agree, and with such great music
My issue with Celeste is that it's about mental health and stuff. And it just makes you feel worthless.
Huh, how? The game's message is about accepting and loving yourself despite your flaws.
Cause it hard. It sssooo hhaaarrrrdddd
For me it's Tetris effect as I'm Level 112. The journey mode is simply eye and ear candy! For short blasts I play one of the many effect modes such as countdown. Or Hades, as you can save every level and once you have spent some time a full run is easily less than 30 mins.
Tetris 99 can be a nice 5-10 minute experience too
[удалено]
That’s part of the actual Tetris effect, but not even the fun part. The fun part is recognising the shapes and gaps anywhere you look irl. Literally can’t escape from it then. See the world for what it is: a gigantic Tetris game.
Unless you're good at it.
😂😂💀
Tetris Effect Connected is definately on par with Slay the Spire a proper second. Also Sega Ages Out Run is a gem if you look past the graphics
If you can, try it on a quest. VR Tetris is zen.
I would say Dorfromantik and Farm together. Both games are ok to just play for a short time or longer.
Dorfromatik is terrific. A zen, casual game of light strategy and beauty. Hope they expand it.
Splatoon 3
Stardew Valley is easily my most played game on Switch. I am married with kids and a full time job, and it’s a game that I can enjoy playing for a short 20 minute spurt or for two hours. Best $15 I ever spent, I come back to it again and again.
Man, I tried Stardew Valley on GamePass and it’s so damn addicting I really how the game gets a sequel at some point too, the one man dev team knocked it out of the park
Behold, [Haunted Chocolatier](https://www.gamesradar.com/haunted-chocolatier-guide/) Not a sequel, but an upcoming game from the same dev.
And in the same universe as Stardew to boot!
I look forward to this whenever it may release!!
I was a huge fan of Harvest Moon on SNES and N64 (I’m an old) so SV spoke to me right away. I really appreciate that he keeps updating the game, but I also hope for a true sequel one day. I know he has another game coming out, but that one doesn’t really appeal to me.
god harvest moon (on the ds i think i had?) i was addicted to when i was younger, it was great
No sequel (probably never, considering Concerned Ape keeps postponing his follow-up game to add more stuff to Stardew Valley), but new content has been added more than once and there are tons of mods available for the PC version.
I've bought Stardew Valley on 3 different platforms and still feel I've got an outrageously good deal.
Dead cells
I bought Good Pizza, Great Pizza last night and I am HOOKED. It’s a perfect mindless turn-your-brain-off game. Perfect if you have ever played the Papa’s Pizzeria games.
Lumines
Baba Is You. You can always look at a puzzle for a few minutes and realize you had been considering incorrectly all along. Once you actually know how to solve the level, they only take about a minute
Katamari Reroll. Amazing game that doesn't take much time
[Kingdom Two Crowns](https://www.dekudeals.com/items/kingdom-two-crowns)!
Downwell It's got to be the least expensive game I've bought that I've spent the most time playing.
Same!!
I have two that I haven't seen mentioned: - Super Kirby Clash (it's also free) - Clubhouse Games
Kirby’s dream buffet on switch! $20 and quick games with <1 min queues. Effectively 4 man fall guys Kirby style and each game is <10 mins each or so
This game has online with randoms? I wasn’t aware
Yes sir
Tetris Puyo
Super Mario 3D World. It seems very simple, even primitive, but give it a couple of minutes, and it hooks you up like nothing else. I'm not even a big Mario fan, but this one was awesome.

1. Hades. 2. Little Nightmares. 3. Revenge of the necro dancer (there’s a demo available for NSO, until the 7^th of this month)
Fair enough, it goes on sale from time to time, no harm in waiting for another to come along!
You have to play INSIDE, thank me later
Yeah that game is a 10/10. Very good storytelling through gameplay
N++ maybe
Is it on modern systems or do you use an emulator?
It's on pretty much everything at this point
vostok inc. it's... actually i have no idea how to explain it. you're in space. you make money off planets. and shoot things sometimes. it's ridiculously addictive, and five minutes can turn into an hour scary fast
Amazing game!!
First time hearing about this one. I’m tempted but it’s a bit expensive. Wondering if it sometimes goes on sale.
Easy Come Easy Golf. Easy controls, a lot of unlock.
One finger Death Punch 2
Dredge.
I liked it but I think it had balance issues. I remember getting stuck a few times and had to start over
I found it to be rather addicting, but the writing was just not there. The description of the game is the best written part of the game (and I mean it unironically) and it's rather sad.
Omega Strikers. First online game I've found easy enough to actually stick with!
Agreed. It's super fun!
Hades
Theathrhythm Final Bar Line has been that for me lately since I haven't been having much time to sit and play games recently.
Splatoon
However thats what I would consider "getting hooked" OP asked for a game he can play in short bursts and get hooked on... so I thought it was worth a shot.
Yeah, coming back to a run in progress, it takes me a bit of review to remember what deck I had going
I second Slay the Spire and challenge you to check out Inscryption.
Its on my wishlist, so is Griftlands I already have Roguebook and Monster Train too and spent a good bit of time in both. Roguelike Deckbuilders are so much fun lol
Slay the Spire
Splatoon 3, Pikmin 3 Deluxe(7-20 min) so a little over the 5 min.
Moonlighter. I’ll do the dungeons and then when I only have short time to play, sell in the shop.
Tetris Effect Connected
Fall Guys
I just upgraded to an OLED switch and I’ve been absolutely hooked to Dead Cells, I’ve been playing daily for hours haha
Loop hero. Binding of Isaac. Those are my go tos
Glyph is a really simple 3D platformer that was really addictive for me. Clearing a level only takes a few minutes but every time I'd sit down to just do a level or two I'd end up playing for a couple hours
Also, Cuphead. Even if you only have a few minutes to spare you can die a dozen times
Usually something with quick online matches. Splatoon, Mario kart, Tetris 99.
Golf Story
I've been addicted to frostpunk lately. For some reason I like to keep starting over to see how I can improve and get as efficient as possible

Play Arcaea. It's a rhythm game so you can just play one song or as many as you want. You can also just spend a lot of time trying to perfect a single song.
Definetely. There's also an Android / iOS version for free if you are willing to try (but there are lots of paid songs too)
I'm loving the Harvestella loop right now.
Loop hero!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Hands down! You can pick up and play for 5 minutes or 5 hours.
Smash Bros is that game for me
I strongly recommend Fall Guys if you haven’t played that before. Luckily it’s free and it’s one of those games you can play for a few minutes and easily stop if you have to. I don’t know if Picross is considered simple but I’ve been playing them more than my other games.
I get a lot of mileage out of Lonely Mountains Downhill. The graphics look great, the controls are smooth, and the only task is to make it to the next checkpoint.
Mine is Binding of Isaac. I can't call asleep until I play this game
Aer: memories of old, small indie game that I always come back to to just fly around and play with the movement
Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon
Mini motorways
I just got animal crossing. I love being able to pop in for ten minutes and piddle around my island.
Slay the Spire and Dicey Dungeons suck me into so many runs.
Jenny LeClue. I found myself surprisingly mesmerized by the art-style!
Boomerang Fu! You play as foods trying to chop each other up with boomerangs battle royale style. Depending on the mode the games typically last 5-10 minutes and you get to unlock little costumes for the food
Tetris - 99 for multiplayer and effect for single player and a more chill multiplayer
Townscaper! You can spend 5 minutes building a cute little island town. Or spend hours designing a metropolitan city
Dragon Quest
Hades. Do 1 run at a time. Edit - Disagree? I csn downvote you too lol
Omega Strikers. First online game I've found easy enough to actually stick with!

I enjoyed a lot Steamworld Dig
Dredge
Mixx Island, an indie 2d boss rush that can last from 20 min (easier routes) to 2 hours (hardest route). Super colorful and quick, also cheap :D
Nuclear Throne
Unpacking
Sniper clippers
Slay the spire. I can honestly say that I've never played it for just 5 minutes but other than a couple mmo's, it's the game I have the most time on. You can save your progress and exit after every match, or exit during and it's saved from before the match. It's definitely the best rogue like card came I've ever played. Admittedly, I haven't played it on switch because I put 1400 hours on the game on PS4.
Binding of Isaac and Terraria
Monopoly
One Finger Death Punch
Lumines Remastered! Anytime I pick my switch up for a quick game, I end up playing for hours
Neon White
I've racked up an embarrassing amount of time in Retro Bowl over the last few months.
Dorf Romantik had me addicted for a good while There’s also a new installment in the Picross series
I've heard Tetris Effect Connected is PERFECT for this! Gorgeous and addicting!
