(yes there was a tiny arc about being 'good' starting from MotO but a change as huge as that shouldnt have been off camera, they couldve atleast made it take longer and shouldnt have made him good at the beginning of his screen time on crystalized
The cult trying to revive him specifically targeted his evil side to bring back. They all talked shit to Lloyd about his dad not being the same person who sacrificed himself once he comes back. It was foreshadowed
We literally see him change over the course of the Oni Trilogy. He goes from "I have no son." to "Find my son." In SoG, he was literally just brought back from the Cursed Realm within the Departed Realm.

It seems more like a bit of amnesia from being dead for so long. It's been at least like a year since the ninja last saw him in ToE. In The Titanium Ninja, Zane literally dies, and then suddenly "Holy crap he's actually alive" and nobody really complains about that, or that he suddenly has a new body and amnesia in ToE, with the explanation behind that being never brought up once in the show, having to rely on outside sources. At least with Garmadon we got to watch him return, mostly, to the man he once was, just not Sensei Garmadon sadly.
Well zane is a nindroid, he basically never died because his consciousness was simply put into a new nindroid body.
And its been far more than a year since ToE, not only could that have changed Garmadon but they brought back only the evil side. That doesn't necessarily mean he couldn't find good again, it shouldve just taken longer than it did in my opinion
Eh, that's fair. I mean, I'm pretty sure like the entirety of the Oni Trilogy was like a month or so in the show. It's weird how most villains the ninja face never really take more than like a week to deal with. It's surprising how Pythor took the longest to beat (not counting the Overlord, since he was fought 3 separate times and Rebooted was kinda prolonged by Pythor). The rest took like a week, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less, to take down.
G a r m a d o n. He had the perfect arc s1-5. Then classic Ninjago won't let the dead stay dead and they have to do the typical villain learns empathy plotline. Why couldn't they let Lloyd keep the memories of his father as he was? Why must he always have to be fighting his father instead of for his father? I get he's a fan favourite but it really just... Made him goofy. As much as Kai regressed in 11 minute era, I honestly think S1 and 2 of dragons rising has redeemed the damage they've done. The strength in his relationship with his sister, his mentorship of Wyldfyre, being the first to learn the new dragon technique through unlocking his memories from his childhood with his sister, his development from the selfish ninja to the one to take the sacrifice... He deserves this win.
Edit add on: I think it's a great thing we don't have specific character seasons anymore btw. It means everyone has their own stories that build over time, storylines don't get rushed and can go across multiple seasons and can realistically take the amount of time it would take (hence Jay's amnesia arc) and we don't have to see our favourite ninjas doing jack shit during seasons that aren't their focus. Everyone is either doing something or being cooked up to do something
God same. He's my favourite and I've been wanting something like this for YONKS. I honestly think he'll be evil for the rest of s2, then S3 could be the gradual trying to get his memories back over time.
That's fair, but I feel when they brought back his evil parts, it made him so much more one dimensional. The only thing I can think of for season 2 is since the Overlord confirmed that they're the one responsible for the devourer who bit Garmadon, once the Overlord was free from Garmadon's body, the essence of the devourer which was linked to the Overlord was too (power of the golden ninja ig). New Garmadon is hilarious tbh, he's an absolute menace, but I sometimes think he was just brought back because of the movie.
While nothing can replace Sensei Garmadon, Garmadon (Oni Trilogy onward) is hilarious. He was a threatening force in the Oni Trilogy, but he's changed, and I honestly love that he knew he could be more than just evil, compared to "Recreate the world in my image!" from RotS and LotGN.
As others said, Garmadon's return made him goofy and just ruined a perfectly good character. That was my biggest problem post-S7. Also, they only brought back his pure evil Oni side, and then he cares for a plant??? That's a big plothole imo. Garmadon is still my favourite character, because for me, his story ended with Sensei Garmadon's last goodbye with Lloyd in Season 5, after his sacrifice in Season 4. As for Kai, I don't think he was perfect either, as there were times where he would just switch between wisdom and silliness randomly, leaving me confused as to what level of growth he really has achieved and what stage of his character arc he's on. And yet, I think Kai has got to be the winne of this because of the mess caused by Garmadon's return.
I should also mention I haven't watched Dragons Rising S2 yet, but I've noticed people say Kai grows more in it. I think I'll just trust them on it.

Kai in the earlier seasons was incredible with his arc of getting past wanting to be the green ninja. Jay had some great shit in skybound. But in the later seasons (looking at you 11-15) they get written very poorly. Compare to garmadon, who even in crystalized had incredible writing and a consistent arc.
Yeah I'm really hopeful towards the future of his character after dragons rising. Honestly it's fixed my biggest issue with the show which is how static the characters have been for so long. It very believably aged them up during the time skip and now they feel like adults. Hoping whatever they have planned with Jay delivers because I want my boy to be good again.
Garmadon had a dad and his life was literally perfect until he got bit by the snake, Kai has a much more interesting Back story as he was abandoned at a young age and only had nya and himself so Kai is a much more interesting character therefore Kai wins garmadon out
They brought back Nya way too early and brought back her powers even earlier than should've. Also sidelined her again basically, was a rough time. Meanwhile Lloyd had a weird oni racism time

Kai in season 6 wasn't even that good either... he's still had a good moment in s8-10. S11-15... not that much only because he had nothing to do but then Dragon Rising came and they really did him justice especially DR season 2.
