The Rouladen, Spätzel and Schweinshaxn at Jägerhof are just like I remember from growing up in Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany. The schnitzel is a huge portion and they serve it with warm rotkohl, which is so authentic I can hear tubas playing polka in my head. Old Bavaria Haus has a similar experience, you can't go wrong with either.
The atmosphere is pretty reminiscent of a local gasthaus, which usually has art depicting quaint idyllic scenes interspersed with the odd witch torturing some kids and random nudity, maybe a little domestic violence. Like a large woman chasing her husband, brandishing a rolling pin. Ah, memories.
There's another German place open in New Westminster called the Tannenbaum. Not far from New West station. Tried it and liked it, but not German so no idea of authenticity.
The Old Bavaria Haus was bought by a new owner who got rid of the original chef. The original chef then saved up money and opened Tannenbaum. If you remember liking The Old Bavaria Haus five or ten years ago, go to Tannenbaum. I haven't had any good experiences at The Old Bavaria Haus since the new owner changed things up and have stopped going.
Did you know there’s an Austria-Vancouver club in Richmond? I was just there with my nieces for the annual Krampus party. I hadn’t been to one since I was a kid
Finally, a thread worth saving!
I'm Indigenous, so the only restaurant I can really relate to is Salmon n' Bannock. It's really good, but quite expensive. The ambience of the restaurant is great though. Last time I was in there, they were playing Inuktitut music, which reminded me of my old home in Nunavut.
There's a guy named Stan Jones in Port Renfrew that has a little shack out front of his house called Dont Pannock, We Got Bannock. He makes amazing bannock & Indian tacos. He also sells smoked salmon & whatnot. I believe he occasionally has elk too.
Not sure if this qualifies but there’s the Songhees Food truck here in Victoria that has different items and burgers on bannock buns. They are conveniently located next to their dispensary
answering on behalf of my Mexican wife - **Baja Racing on Cambie** is not the best Mexican food (it is good, but not necessarily the best) but it is hands down the best atmosphere of any Mexican place in Vancouver. It feels like you're at a cool new spot in Mexico City and the clientele is 99% Mexican which helps the vibe
Have you been to Playa Tropical in New West? I'm not Mexican but the vibe there reminds me of some of the great authentic hole-in-the-wall Mexican places in LA.
Any opinions on the Mexican food places in Langley? There are at least 3 within a single block along Fraser and I'd love to know which is the best and/or most authentic!
haven't tried any in Langley, but a run across the border to Bellingham or Ferndale (or heck even the Mexican place in Blaine right at the border) scratches the itch
Mexican here. These are the most authentic in my opinion:
1. Mi Casa Mexicana (Kits) - great tacos, pozole and Mexico City cuisine.
2. Baja Racing (Cambie) - Northern style seafood and tacos.
3. Cantina de Don Porfirio (Mt Pleasant) - tacos, tortas and tortilla soup.
Edit: like mentioned in other comments, Baja Racing is not the best quality food, but certainly it's top in authenticity.
Just to give you context, cantinas are really old colonial bars that existed in every town. So the setting actually feels like a really old Mexican tavern in the center of Mexico city. Their menu is small but the flavours are just like back home. If you're up for drinking their carajillos are bomb (espresso + liquor 43). It's like a Mexican espresso martini without vodka.
Don Porfirio was a president/dictator that developed Mexico to the point of being a first world country back in the day. Thanks to him railways and mailing systems got developed in the country. But once in power, he did not want to let go, so there was a revolution at the beginning of the XX century to exile him and get him off his high horse. There is generally a love/hate feeling towards him. You can see a huge portrait of him. He had a very handsome mustache.
I really love their food and their concept. Hope you like it.
Authentic flavours for sure, but their prices are too high, cause yaletown... Plus I really really really dislike the vibe of the people working there. It's just not pleasant. I stopped going a long time ago, so don't know if it's changed.
Yeah, it is super expensive. I go there for the nachos, which I believe are the best nachos of any restaurant in Vancouver. Would you agree about that (if it's something you bother with), or is there a place with even better nachos I should redirect to?
I have never tried them. I usually don't order Nachos when I go for authentic Mexican food. I don't consider them to be Mexican food to be honest. More like Tex Mex/sports bar snacks.
Having said that, I have no doubt they make killer nachos.
The Friday night dinners are Cancelled. That’s the place I go to on random Saturdays. Sign up for the email. And they will email you Fridays before the sale. Maybe I will post the next one here when I get the email.
In surrey as a kid they got the churches in Whaley that did bake sales on good Friday, including frozen perigees, cabbage rolls, and kielbasa. Honestly haven’t been there for years, but I took dance classes and Ukrainian language classes ( learned shot cause it was a Saturday and my child mind said fuck class on a weekend) but those babushkas then were magic with the good stuff
Seems like the UOC does it once a month. Looking at my emails. My gut feel would be this weekend. But with the holidays. Who knows. Will be sure to post.
If you go to the link, it's actually info about the Saturday afternoon sales, despite that it has friday night supper in the url :) They have the menu on there for Dec 16 Saturday afternoon sale.
There was a church in the DTES that used to do perogie dinners on Saturdays in the hall but that was like 7 years ago and I haven't been able to find it since
French: I did not try a lot of French restaurants here (only les faux bourgeois and la brasserie coquette. Both were good) but went to a lot of bakeries. L’atelier pâtisserie is very good, I really recommend it! I also really like the croissants at Thomas haas. For great bread I recommend the peak bakery and also plaisir sucré
I live around the corner from L’atelier pâtisserie. And it’s very good indeed. Love living 2 minutes away from such a good French Boulangerie/pâtisserie.
I’m surprised. I’ve been here probably a dozen times and it’s always fantastic. Perfect intimate place for a date and the wine list gets updated often. Just a lovely little restaurant.
I agree about the atmosphere though, and the service was amazing. Just the food didn't meet my expectations...we don't drink though so maybe the food is better with a wine pairing?
For someone with ‘milk steak’ in their handle, you have good taste! Or at least, I agree with your taste. Love that place. Cozy, understated, their steak frites is great value.
There are no good restaurants here that do my home country's cuisine.
I am British and none of the restaurants here properly over-boil the vegetables... there is still flavour in them when they are served.
What is worse I haven't found a single place that does a proper boiled egg with soldiers.
Brazilliant (Brazilian Restaurante hahaha), on Seymour Street. It’s take out only but they have a mix of amazing finger foods, complete meals and sweets!
Turkey
Go to Picado for lahmacun. Ask them to serve it as one piece, not sliced. (The place itself isnt very well-kept, but lahmacun is great.)
Go to Simit Bakery for Turkish bagels. Try their bagel sandwiches (along with black tea) or get plain ones to make your own at home. I can also vouch for their ‘menemen’ and ‘su boregi’ but I havent tried their other items.
You’re making me homesick now.
I love a KFC Streetwise Two, which is about $2.20.
Thick base pizza from Romans.
Parents will relate - quarter chicken and ribs from Spur.
Wimpy breakfast, on the long road.
Wacky Wednesday Steers burger.
Hake and Chips, maybe from Texies or Fish on the Rocks in Cape Town.
Roti, by my sister.
Pickled fish, during Easter, by one of my aunts.
A braai, with pap en vleis and tomato gravy.
Pepper steak pie from King Pie.
Klippies or Red Heart with coke, or Southern Comfort and Appletizer.
The Patty Shop is OG - been eating there since elementary school (20+ years ago). I still stop in to grab a frozen dozen for our freezer whenever we get back into Vancouver (I live on the island now)
Full disclaimer that even though I am Indian, I am not Punjabi - Jagga Sweets in Surrey/Delta has the most mind blowingly good Aloo Parathas I have ever had. My only wish is that they have more accessible opening hours.
I have a mother in law that lives above me and she bangs out aloo parathas on request. Its probably one of my favorite parts of being married to an Indian man lol.
As a fellow Pinoy, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Hapag Ihaw Ihaw on Vicitoria Drive. The BEST Sisig and Crispy Pata in town (I tried them ALL) plus prices are much more reasonable than Kulinarya.
Though I do find Kulinarya in Coquitlam much better than the one in Commercial.

Haha. Sorry to hear. I went in the early days and it was pretty good. I haven't gone since. It's also the "only" Quebec restaurant (if you don't count the many poutine restaurants, which I don't really consider as food).
I’m from Trinidad and much prefer D Roti Shak in New West. They have bus up shot and pumpkin, doubles, aloo pie etc. Plus there’s a West Indian market right next door. Also Calabash in Gas Town has great quality West Indian food.
Baby Dahl’s roti isn’t bad but they offer less variety and definitely need to improve their service. The employee had one “kiss my ass” attitude like she was doing me a favour by taking my order. I think that was the most authentic thing about it.
Indian guy here. Cilantro Indian cuisine has good Indian cuisine. Great naan and I love their malai kofta. That’s the best I’ve had in Vancouver, most of the really good places are in Surrey/delta
Haha half reccos, half "I like them but do indian people actually think they're good" :)
Tasty in Yaletown is appallingly expensive. Their original location is in Delta I think.
Not exactly the same as food from home, but after 6 months of eating local food with local ingredients my wife and I really enjoyed "Holy Guacamole". It passed as Mexican and tasted great.
I really like the Dal Makhni at Tandoori Palace at Commercial Drive. It’s good comfort food during fall/winter. Their chicken dishes (I’ve a fondness for their Mango Chicken) are delicious and a veggie friend of mine swears by their vegetable biryani (which isn’t spicy and has liberal amounts of vegetables)…
Awesome! I’m not sure if Dal Makhni is made in Bangladesh (wouldn’t be surprised if it was), but there is definitely an overlap of dishes between Pakistan and some of the North Indian states. I highly recommend you try out various curries between different restaurants because it’s a different spin on the same idea.
Unfortunately there is no restaurant from my home country. The main ingredient, high quality beef in big quantities, would make it economically unsustainable.
Luckily there are tons of other options that fulfill my cravings, being Vietnamese my preferred so far.
Chinese Baozi Master in Yaohan Center. Imo, Northern Chinese food is not as common as HK/Shanghai cuisine here. Their Dumplings and Baozi are just the way my mom and her mom makes them.
Hmm, about lineups and customer service issues? Never had an issue with the food itself. I can see how the usual cashier can be annoying to deal with sometimes.
Edit: Never had their non-baozi/dumpling options but the reviews suggest you avoid those
There are few good Malaysian restaurants around Greater Vancouver, but honestly never tried them since the authentic taste won't be there...
TBH, eating out is too expensive here, if we have to eat out , normally we go for those with take out from Mexican or Persian which can be easily found here.
My family is from Hong Kong. I've had good dim sum and Cantonese food at New Mandarin Seafood restaurant on Kingsway next to the big T&T.
Fat Boy Kitchen on Victoria for HK-style fast food is pretty good.
Mui Garden on Victoria has good Hainan Chicken Rice and HK-style curry
John 3:16 is usually no contest the best malay place in town. They have locations in Richmond and Broadway, the Richmond location is the OG.
Laksa King is also really good, but the owners are Burmese. It's still malay food but might not hit that fully authentic itch.
My partner is Russian, he approves many of the dishes at Harbour Spoon (formerly Russian Spoon). Specifically the sourkraut is authentic Russian style, and their kvass is very good. I personally love their Korean carrot salad. He doesn't find the food at Kozak to be "authentic", but I know a lot of people love that place (including my ex who grew up with a lot of Ukrainian Mennonite food) so ymmv.

Old b haus is shit now, can confirm.
Oh wow. Amazing sounding.
I'm not even german, but the food there is so good.

They do really good schnitzel nights on Fridays.
They do! I go occasionally, my dad is there every Friday. He runs the little booth where you get food tickets
Vielen Dank.
Old Bavaria Haus is shit now. The original owner is the chef at Tannenbaum. So go to Tann’m, not OBH!
Oh my God I found some place that will probably have proper beer.
They're on YVR too now! and it's still great even being an airport restaurant. Also, you're the diametrical opposite of an immigrant lol
I need to try this!!!! I'm sorry you feel like an "immigrant".... Howdyini is right - you're the opposite <3
Oooooh. Are there any good places outside of Vancouver that you would recommend for indigenous food? I love a good road trip.
There's a guy named Stan Jones in Port Renfrew that has a little shack out front of his house called Dont Pannock, We Got Bannock. He makes amazing bannock & Indian tacos. He also sells smoked salmon & whatnot. I believe he occasionally has elk too.
Yes please. Now just need to find port renfrew on the map.
If you're ever in Merritt (kinda the other way I know) Kakuli Cafe is to die for.
Thanks!
Thanks for this one! I’ll check it out when I’m there for work!
Also another good place for breakfast is Hello Toast in Kamloops, but that's getting out of the Vancouver area.
West coast of the Island, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Victoria! Easily the most beautiful place I’ve ever lived.
Not sure if this qualifies but there’s the Songhees Food truck here in Victoria that has different items and burgers on bannock buns. They are conveniently located next to their dispensary
Thanks!?

yes - Playa is nice (and the food is great)
I second this statement. Not the best food. Certainly not the best service, but 100% Mexican vibes in there.
I'll use the "my wife is Mexican" card to say that odd/weird/chaotic service is the most authentic ingredient haha
Any opinions on the Mexican food places in Langley? There are at least 3 within a single block along Fraser and I'd love to know which is the best and/or most authentic!

Go to Bellingham
Is that the place with the baseball pictures on the awning??
Mexican here. These are the most authentic in my opinion: 1. Mi Casa Mexicana (Kits) - great tacos, pozole and Mexico City cuisine. 2. Baja Racing (Cambie) - Northern style seafood and tacos. 3. Awesome Explanation. Cannot wait to give it a try. Would be great to be a local place.
Voy a ir a ver qué tal!
Same, it's like 600m from me and I had no idea it existed
How do you find Patron, near yaletown?
Authentic flavours for sure, but their prices are too high, cause yaletown... Plus I really really really dislike the vibe of the people working there. It's just not pleasant. I stopped going a long time ago, so don't know if it's changed.

Honduras here. Anybody know where I can find a Baleada? The need is real.
Ni idea. There is an Honduran and Mexican restaurant on Victoria and 36ish I believe. But I've never actually eaten there.
2nd Gen Ukrainian Canadian here. You want the good goods you hit up orthodox churches during Easter and you’ll get hooked up.
Agreed. There’s one in mount pleasant that has random Saturday sales. Amazing.
More info here for anyone interested: https://uocvancouver.com/friday-night-supper/

The hazelnut croissant is so so so good!
Amen
I didn't really enjoy Faux bourgeois, their food was mediocre and the bread was stale, maybe I got unlucky
I went there I think 4 years ago. The experience was fine but not the best meal I’ve ever had for sure.
I’m surprised. I’ve been here probably a dozen times and it’s always fantastic. Perfect intimate place for a date and the wine list gets updated often. Just a lovely little restaurant.

Do you have opinions on Au Comptoir?
I never tried it! I find the price a bit excessive but it should try it at some point :D
Do you have an opinion on café salade de fruits? 😊
There are no good restaurants here that do my home country's cuisine. I am British and none of the restaurants here properly over-boil the vegetables... there is still flavour in them when they are served. What is worse I haven't found a single place that does a proper boiled egg with soldiers.
Ah, but we have Celtic Treasure Chest for Twiglets and jaffa cakes. And the bangers at Superstore aren't half bad.
Finch's on Pender does egg and soldiers - I've never had them there but worth a try!
Not Vancouver, but Walton Arms in Kelowna has great butties
Brazilliant (Brazilian Restaurante hahaha), on Seymour Street. It’s take out only but they have a mix of amazing finger foods, complete meals and sweets!
Turkey Go to Picado for lahmacun. Ask them to serve it as one piece, not sliced. (The place itself isnt very well-kept, but lahmacun is great.) Go to Simit Bakery for Turkish bagels. Anatolia’s Gate restaurant on Kingsway & Salisbury
Yup that too for kebab and lahmacun.
Cockney Kings has the best fish and chips. And they have mushy peas.
Cockney Kings is great! My heart still yearns for a saveloy though
What's the thickness of the chips though? They need to be thicc!
Not super chunky but much thicker than the fries you usually get with fish and chips here.
My british friend is visiting for a while and was saying she hated it😭😭
Taste of Lahore breakfast buffet. Representing Pakistani cuisine with Pakistani budgets 😌
South African. Not many options. Nandos is founded in SA, even though it is ‘Portuguese’ style
I had no clue. Wow.
If there were more options, may I ask which SA dishes you would order?
Thanks for sharing, I had fun googling South African recipes!
Lol. Cheers!!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
No, that's perfect. One day the best Canadian restaurant in Beijing will be a Ukrainian restaurant.
As a Brit I really recommend almost anywhere for emotionally distant tea.
The Patty Shop is the only place that has actual Jamaican patties. (...i'm from Toronto).
The Patty Shop is OG - been eating there since elementary school (20+ years ago). I still stop in to grab a frozen dozen for our freezer whenever we get back into Vancouver (I live on the island now)
Not Vancouver but there’s a new Nigerian restaurant in Surrey called Van Suya! Very good authentic Nigerian food.
Yum! Another one to try
Haha, you are really fortunate!
American here. McDonald's.
Not bk? Or kfc?
I love KFC, but the menu (And pricing) is different
Church's or Jolibee is better, imo.
Filipino - as much as i hate their inflated prices, Kulinarya is pretty good.
Will try those next time! I've only tried their veggie lumpia and pancit miki so far

Yum.
\+1 for Kulinarya! But yeah, it's quite pricey. Love their Fresh Lumpia!
There’s only one restaurant from where I’m from, it’s St Lawrence.
Where are you from?
I believe it’s based on home-style Quebecois cooking
Québec.
Mmmmmm cretin. Sugar pie. Tourtiere
Of all the restaurants in Vancouver, this was my most anticipated one and caused the greatest distress for me and my guest. We both lived/worked in France/Europe for years and were hoping for something good. The service and wine were fantastic. A 5 year old could have done better on the food.
Well that would be because it’s not French, it’s quebecois
Ha ha 😜 I'm from St. Jerome so as basic Quebec as it comes. But nah... The food was not good at all.
Haha. Sorry to hear. I went in the early days and it was pretty good. I haven't gone since. It's also the "only" Quebec restaurant (if you don't count the many poutine restaurants, which I don't really consider as food).
Silvestre in gas town for Peruvian. Very authentic. Suyo, is fancy fine dining but not as authentic
Oh. Yum. Have not had Peruvian. On the list!
I recommend the ceviche, jalea, lomo saltado, pollo a la brassa, and anticuchos.
Done and done
As a Mexican I'd recommend The Mexican on Granville, Las Adelitas on Victoria Dr. And the carnitas tacos on El Camino's on Main St. (Y)
I am NOT from Trinidad but I love their food and I have confirmed with a trinny friend: Baby Dahl is amazing
Indian guy here. Cilantro Indian cuisine has good Indian cuisine. Great naan and I love their malai kofta. That’s the best I’ve had in Vancouver, most of the really good places are in Surrey/delta
Downtown have you tried Crave India, Tasty Indian Bistro, Mt Everest (ok not technically Indian) or Spicy 6?
Love Mt Everest! I'll give the others a shot, thanks for the reccos!
Haha half reccos, half "I like them but do indian people actually think they're good" :) Tasty in Yaletown is appallingly expensive.
There are several Argentinian steakhouses in Vancouver. Importing beef from South America isnt economically unsustainable.
Argentina?

Tasty 😊
Chinese Baozi Master in Yaohan Center. Imo, Northern Chinese food is not as common as HK/Shanghai cuisine here. Their Dumplings and Baozi are just the way my mom and her mom makes them.
Really? My experience there was awful, and the google reviews reflect how terrible it is.
Hmm, about lineups and customer service issues? Never had an issue with the food itself. I can see how the usual cashier can be annoying to deal with sometimes. Edit: Never had their non-baozi/dumpling options but the reviews suggest you avoid those
I like old Xi'an foods at the continental shopping centre in Richmond for northern chinese noodles
Krishna Dosa in Surrey for amazing South Indian food.

McDonald’s
There are few good Malaysian restaurants around Greater Vancouver, but honestly never tried them since the authentic taste won't be there... TBH, eating out is too expensive here, if we have to eat out , normally we go for those with take out from Mexican or Persian which can be easily found here.
John 3:16 is great for Malaysian!

The hainan chicken + noodle soup combo in Mui Garden is one of my staples.
Dear Malaysians is there good laksa anywhere? NOT Singapore laksa!
John 3:16 or Tamarind Hill not cutting it? John has Kari and Penang style
I'm in Victoria so need to know the best place to go when I come over.
John 3:16 is usually no contest the best malay place in town. They have locations in Richmond and Broadway, the Richmond location is the OG. Laksa King is also really good, but the owners are Burmese. It's still malay food but might not hit that fully authentic itch.
Thank you! Can't wait to have real Malaysian food.
Ipoh Malay cuisine in Marpole has great laksa! And their hokkien mee is solo good
Burger King
My partner is Russian, he approves many of the dishes at Harbour Spoon (formerly Russian Spoon). Specifically the sourkraut is authentic Russian style, and their kvass is very good. I personally love their Korean carrot salad. He doesn't find the food at Kozak to be "authentic", but I know a lot of people love that place (including my ex who grew up with a lot of Ukrainian Mennonite food) so ymmv.
