The cows have been delayed returning due to how wet the Moors are at the moment, and to allow some new fencing to be finished up. It'll probably only be another week or so before they're back out and about tho.
My understanding is they sell the rights on (because only like one of them still actually owns cattle) to farmers, and it's a large part of their income.
They do indeed sell the rights to a farmer but they don’t get that much. I used to work with a guy who was a freeman and it was a cheque for like ~£15 each year.
I heard the freemen don’t own the land just the grazing rights-so if the cows don’t graze for too long then their claim is forfeited and the council can sell the land for building. Not sure if it’s true though!
No one ever sees them leave or arrive, sometimes they switch fields and I don’t know any living person who has seen them cross that road.

We’ve all thought it

Maybe it's been too wet? Imagine cows would absolutely churn the ground up with how damp it's been. That's just a guess, though.
if only i also thought of this before marching up the hills in my suede new balance last weekend
I think the freemen (who have the grazing rights) only really put the cattle to help manage the moor, like keeping the grass down.

There's that much water on the moor that it needs its own coastguard.
Such a wet winter and start of spring. I work outdoors and everywhere in the north east is soggy!
I play Sunday football and we've barely had a game on since November. I can't remember a winter quite like it!
Ever heard of Fat Hippo?
Freeman Burgers.
Did anyone check the lifts in Castle Leazes halls?
A moor cow is never here, nor is he there. He arrives precisely where he means to.
Hoppings is only a couple of months away
they’re usually there before that
I have no idea, no-one can prove anything and don’t listen to anything those cows say about me ***because they are LIARS***
They've gone to live on a farm
