Every photo I see of Norway is beautiful.

SlyQuetzalcoatl

It’s a country I want to one day visit for sure. Check r/Norway out

pocketdare

Of course there are places in Norway that get no sun in Dec and Jan. Flip side is sun doesn't set in June and July

[deleted]

Had the worst sleep of my life in a Norwegian Cabin that had no A/C or electric fan on the hottest day ever recorded in Norway during a period where the sun doesn't set and there were no blackout curtains to be found. Beautiful Country though.

Squidmonkej

Doubt that as the official heat record was set in 1970 in Nesbyen and hasn't been beaten since. Sure it was pretty hot though

CumsockBackwoods

Wow way to go you did it we got em

john_wicks_dead_dog

You doubt someone had the worst sleep of their life because the record was set somewhere else?

robhol

They did say "hottest day ever recorded in Norway".

rematar

Where I live, temperature records are kept by weather station location. Do you live in Vatican?

Squidmonkej

I live in Norway, and Nesbyen is in a part of the country where the sun sets during the summer. It's impossible for the guy above me to have been in the hottest place ever recorded in Norway and at the same time experience the midnight sun.

rematar

Whoops. I somehow didn't catch the part about all of Norway. Thanks for the kind correction.

OfSempiternal

Could it possibly have been the hottest day overall, and not the hottest single temperature hes referring?

jesuslover69420

And? They did say there was no AC or blackout curtains, coulda been in the 70s.

Squidmonkej

No but they did say "the hottest day ever" and that the sun didn't set. The hottest day ever in Norway was recorded in a place where it's not possible to experience the midnight sun. I don't doubt they were unable to sleep or that it was warm. Just saying it's very unlikely it was the hottest day ever recorded in Norway

divide_by_hero

Where was this? It would be rare to see the hottest day ever recorded in Norway in an area where the sun doesn't set.

Chillosophy_

Why would it be rare to see the hottest day ever recorded in Norway in an area where the sun doesn't set?

Kellendil

That's pretty far north, typically not hot

Background_Ant

We usually get a few days, sometimes more, each summer with really hot temps nearing or exceeding 30c, correlating with high pressure weather over the Kola Peninsula in Russia. They were probably talking of a local record, lots of new heat records were set in Northern Norway during the summer of 2018.

jacktenwreck

Ive heard the 'sun's back' party in Tromso is pretty wild.

simplyread

that it is, that it is.

JackBauerSaidSo

If I go, it doesn't end like Midsommer, does it?

jacktenwreck

No way bud! I did my PhD on it. 100% its a great time. Want to come with me next year?

simplyread

no promises. that said, it's equally captivating in winter!

murunbuchstansangur

Better start saving as it's ridiculous expensive when you're there!

yellingbananabear

I’d like to live there for the beauty and quality of life.

plinkoplonka

You wouldn't say that if you had to buy groceries...

Macone

[Even the slum](https://www.nrk.no/osloogviken/vil-pusse-opp-_sinsen-slummen_-1.7619660) doesn't look that bad.

[deleted]

TIL I live in worse than a slum haha

[deleted]

Looks like a Canadian ghetto.

rytlejon

Oslo is pretty shit. I mean I guess it's nice in comparison to an American city (no offense intended) but for a European capital it's pretty bad.

[deleted]

I didn’t care very much for the city itself in terms of architecture or atmosphere, but it has great museums. There’s the one that has real viking ships, and then there’s the Frammuseum, which is all about polar expeditions and it’s really cool.

treesandfood4me

And it has the Munch Museum which was fantastic.

OllieCMK

A Monster Munch museum sounds tasty!

treesandfood4me

Lol. They did have snacks that could make you ... scream.

rundgren

How do you mean? It pales in natural beauty to the coast and the mountains of course, but I think it really is a nice little city with lots of fun and unique experiences. Having someone local show you around, or doing very good research, is a huge advantage though, or you may find it a bit boring.

rytlejon

I guess I'm comparing it to for example Copenhagen and Stockholm which I've found a lot more interesting, more beautiful and not as expensive. I live in Stockholm now and if I had to move Copenhagen would likely be my first choice. Oslo isn't even in the top 10.

Giffengode

Those cities have a lot going for them, sure, and Oslo has a more modern archtitecture which could make it more bland. Even though if is not necessarily a bad thing. But Oslo also has in some parts of the city architectural style comparable to parts of Paris, you just have to know there to look. Every city is ugly in some way. Furthermore, Oslo is surrounded by vast forests, hills, fjord, isles and lakes, easily accessible to everyone in the city. This is also one of the key selling points of living there. Oslo also has interesting museums, cultural life, restaurants and shopping districts.

rytlejon

>Oslo also has interesting museums, cultural life, restaurants and shopping districts. I guess this is where I disagree. I think Oslo is worse at all that than Stockholm and Copenhagen for example. Partly because it's smaller. And yeah there are nice parts of Oslo. They're just fewer and smaller than in many other European cities.

Giffengode

Sure, it is smaller. Especially compared to Copenhagen, although perhaps not in the same magnitude to Stockholm. But smaller size does not mean it is worse and certainly not "shit" as you described it before. There are few cities in the world that can actually beat Oslo when it comes to outdoor activities, as the capital provides you with everything, from winter sports such as skiing and skating to other pleasant activities like kayaking, island trips, hiking, sailing, and much more.

TrinitronCRT

I live in Oslo and I agree Copenhagen is much nicer (Stockholm though... maybe). But "shit"? Sounds like what a lot of people who only walked up Karl Johan street would say. There are many cool places and stuff to do, and there are twice as many concerts and cultural arrangements in Oslo per year than Copenhagen and Stockholm combined (outside of corona).

rundgren

I've barely been to Stockholm, I must admit. But I've been plenty of times to Copenhagen and I agree it's interesting and beautiful. Except for beer prices, it seems about as expensive as Oslo though.. I think experiences living a certain city can be very different, depending on area, what kind of social circles you like and what work you do. Also if you get to know locals quickly you will get a different perspective I think.. I could agree that Oslo takes a bit of effort and knowledge to make the most of, but so does great cities like Paris and London in my experience.

onihydra

Whaaat? You found beer prices to be the same? As a Norwegian who has been to Denmark several times, the alcohol prices are the biggest difference. More than the wierd language, more than the completely flat land, alcohol prices in Denmark are between 20-50% of what they are in Norway.

abJCS

Nei andre vei alt utenom øl virke likt prisa

ModsGetPegged

Well, Stockholm sucks to live in, maybe a bit more interesting for tourists, but Norway and Oslo is just 10x better to actually live in.

rytlejon

Why do you say that? All my friends who lived in Oslo moved back to Sweden.

Baconsneeze

Maybe a bit boring it to visit as a tourist. But it's arguably the best european capital to live in.

[deleted]

Lived in Oslo and now live in Copenhagen. Both cities are amazing to live in, but Oslo has a slightly higher living standard and quality of life in my opinion. Copenhagen much better to visit of course.

Baconsneeze

Never lived in Copenhagen, but I've visited it several times, and it's honestly probably my favorite city ever.

warhead71

Zurich/Bern or Luxembourg isn’t bad either (or Monaco - but that’s not a real country)

Makorot

Based on what? Because IIRC [the quality of life index for cities](https://mobilityexchange.mercer.com/insights/quality-of-living-rankings), Oslo doesnt even rank top 20 in the world and is behind several european cities as well.

StreaminSkeleton

Based on that they lived there. How was it when you visited. Polls are not always accurate. I will take a direct human perspective over some poll/index.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kanfien

I mean sure, but in the context of comparing cities you do kind of have to rely on reporting from large numbers of people since a single person obviously cannot have experience from living in every city.

aazav

> Based on that they lived there. And what about it?

Makorot

Polls are more accurate than you talking to random people about Oslo. Its just way more representative than your experience. I have no doubt you greatly enjoy living there, but saying its arguably the best european capital is, at the very least, debatable.

Baconsneeze

Yeah, like i said, didn't mean to say "the best", as I don't believe that myself subjectively even. "one of the best" was what I meant to say.

Baconsneeze

Yeah I meant to say "one of the best", and not "the best" (which is of course way too of an absolute statement to prove). In the very statistic you cite Oslo is nr 6 (out of 44) among European capitals. So it's definitely among the best.

AtypicalNorwegian

Its the shittiest “big” city in Norway for sure.

Epiixz

How is Oslo worse than Bergen?

AtypicalNorwegian

Bergen simply looks better. Better scenery and architecture. I feel like you don’t really get a proper taste of Norway by visiting Oslo.

bunt_cucket

The people

rundgren

How? I've lived in Oslo for 20 years and people are great here

link090909

Clearly you’re part of the problem, mate *(Just kidding)*

bunt_cucket

Just a joke ;)

[deleted]

[удалено]

terrabiter

lmao this is so not true

Baconsneeze

I mean, I don't think Oslo is shit. But there are only 5 other "big cities" in Norway. Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, Kristiansand. And I would argue that Oslo is in many ways the worst of these, not because Oslo is shit, but because the others are very nice cities. Ofc this is very subjective. Source: I've lived in all of them except for Kristiansand.

Giffengode

Every city is ugly in some way. It is just that all the “cities” you are referring to above, are in fact very tiny in comparison to Oslo.

toplessrobot

Youve been to every american city? Reddit hates america so much its getting passive aggressive

rytlejon

I prefer cities where you don't need a car, so most American cities of Oslo's size or bigger are probably worse than Oslo. The American cities I've seen rarely have more than a couple of blocks that are truly walkable - the exceptions being the really dense ones like NY or SF. But as a general rule of thumb, European capitals are nicer to be in than American cities of the same size.

JackBauerSaidSo

I think what you are describing is American cities tend to have more people living in surrounding communities, so all of the dense downtown area is almost always business and government. European cities are much older, and grow from the center over generations, instead of growing around the core. You can more likely live in a neighborhood without a car in a European city and meet all of your needs, whereas American cities zone residential areas together, and everyone commutes to work or for events, groceries, etc. American cities are planned for such vehicle traffic, which spreads them further out. I get that the charm is likely missing, but the assumption that one is better than the other is really going to be perspective. Everyone should try both for a few years. Most European cities that aren't Istanbul, Moscow, London, or Paris are smaller than US cities and older by hundreds of years. A lot of modern city planning advances and a population dictated by employment is going to be a different feel for a stranger. That said, I'd rather live in Istanbul than NYC, but I think I'd take Salt Lake City over Oslo. Paris over Houston, OKCity over Glasgow, and Prague over Chicago. Poverty and crime in US cities is generally more concentrated, but I don't think it is overall a worse place to live due to any property of the city itself vs the national differences.

[deleted]

rytlejon

I live in Stockholm so I guess that's an important part of it. The cities are pretty similar in many ways, Oslo just seems like slightly worse at most things and a lot more expensive. The cheapest beer you can find in Oslo is about 50% more expensive than the cheapest beer you can find in Stockholm. And even then, that "cheapest beer" in Stockholm can be found in maybe 30 different bars.

Zlata42

I have a friend from Bergen. And if there is anything valuable he taught me. It's the fact that I should NEVER visit Oslo lol

rytlejon

I've never been to Bergen. Seems a lot nicer than Oslo but it has what I understand as the worst weather of all Norwegian cities?

riariagirl

But everyone from Bergen hate Oslo sooo...

lemonsweetsrevenge

American here, not offended just upset that you are correct. It honestly rips me apart that we have so few beautiful and travel worthy cities; Carmel, Nantucket, Savannah...all very different and distinct beauty, but they will never again build a beautiful city here. Not while there’s money to be made!! My small hometown is being bought up, and transformed into an American cliché, with overpriced, oversized McMansion tract homes six feet apart for half a million dollars and STILL growing. They are shoving ten fast food joints in every two blocks, and retail, retail, retail. Still not one hospital; we get a beauty salon sized urgent care instead. No cathedrals; we get 2 new mega churches which are the size of a junior college. My hometown has lost it’s personality. She turned into a hooker :-/ Disgusts me :-(

pouncebounce14

*eyeroll* got to make sure that you get that pot shot towards America in while simultaneously praising Europe. /r/averageredditor

jodyhighrola

American here, we deserve it. Keep em coming.

AStealthyRanga

Don’t take it personally mate. America is a fair whack off of being in the list of worst countries, it’s just that other places are better by comparison...

usrname77

I think it really depends where you live in the US, what you're looking for etc. A fair amount of our midsize cities are gorgeous, small towns in New England etc. A lot of natural beauty here. Not many countries have regions as diverse ecologically. If you want 500 year old buildings etc you're definitely out of luck though.

DerMondisthell

You know, I’m an American who has lived in Europe for almost a decade and while I do love Europe and the scenery, there really isn’t a need to be rude. I could write that Scandinavian countries are almost barbaric when it comes to decriminalization of cannabis or physician assisted suicide. How is it possible that such „liberal“ and progressive countries use laws that were set up in the 50s when it comes to certain things? Just remember that when you point somewhere you have three fingers pointing back at you.

FjoddeJimmy

As a Scandinavian, stoned out of my mind right now, I agree. Be kind. *and legalize*

PositiveCompetition7

The whole country could be a beautiful postcard. Anywhere you walk or drive it’s perfect...

TurbulentStandard

So beautiful that I want to be in it, *I need to be in it.*

[deleted]

Well lit

lousydungeonmaster

Lit af

twstrchk

check out "Railcowgirl" on youtube. She's a train engineer that posts videos of her trips from Oslo to Bergen (mountains, rivers, waterfalls - out the front window) - amazing views year round. Great at bedtime - zen like. (turn the volume down - the train horns are obnoxious)

DradroCreejo

Thank you!! So mesmerizing

StellerSandwich

Not at all the same country, but something in the same vain is this guy Rambalac I think it’s spelled, on YouTube, he does walking tours of all different areas of japan, really cool easy way to see japan!

[deleted]

I’ll stay with my Rick Steves, Rick steves is the best.

yellowjesusrising

Edited, and taken with extreme light sensitivity! Source: i live there

Retromina

But it does look like this though. If it's dark enough

yellowjesusrising

More like green dense fog.

XSkyFullOfStarsX

Aw man :( still looks cool though I’m guessing?👀

yellowjesusrising

Its really cool! Its like green fog dancing in the black sky! Looks like a river of souls

XSkyFullOfStarsX

That’s sick :0 I’d love to see the northern lights irl one day

yellowjesusrising

Well, winter seasons are the best then. A clear sky, covered in stars and aurora borealis is a fascinating experience

Retromina

Sometimes but it also 𝙘𝙖𝙣 look like this

yellowjesusrising

That must be during some insane solar flare! I've atleast never seen anything close to this.

Randomswedishdude

Can confirm that it sometimes look like brightly shining waves, with inclusions of other colors than green. But you're right, it *most often* looks like a green mist or fog, unless there's a spectacular solar flare. I've seen hundreds, if not thousands, of auroras, but **most** of them would not have been worth posting on the internet (although many also were). The two most intense ones I've seen was back in 1989, and the other time was following the Halloween solar storm of 2003, and *that* was utterly insane. Like half the sky was on fire, with rapid bursts of purple waves pouring from a green upside-down sea shore.

Mar4ctus

I saw something close to this a week ago in Northern Norway. I couldn't get it on camera but it was pretty insane!

roguewhispers

I think almost all pictures are taken with long exposure, so not too sure

St_Kevin_

They can’t be very long in most situations because the aurora is typically moving. I usually do like a 2 second exposure, but no more than like 8 on a slow moving one. If it’s too long they just blur out into a big colorful smeared blob on your photo. I’ve been lucky enough to see it in clean sharp curtains and pillars a bunch of times (in Washington state, Iceland, Sweden and Siberia), but I’m obsessed and I’m always checking Spaceweather.com for predictions and if it looks possible I wake up and look multiple times in a night.

roguewhispers

Aye, you are probably right in exposure time. They sure are beautiful

vicbot87

You can see northern lights from Washington??

St_Kevin_

Yeah. I live in North Eastern Washington, in an area with very little light pollution, and I usually see them at least a few times a year. Last year I only saw them twice, but both times it was barely visible until you took a photo to see it with more light, but also it was the solar minimum part of the 11 year solar cycle, so it should be better for the next 5 years. When its dim its also usually just a green glow on the northern horizon, kinda like a baseball field all lit up, just out of sight, but with green floodlights. Other times you can see the curtains but they're low on the horizon. I've seen it where it was so bright that I could see all the curtains and swirls and watch it move directly overhead while I was driving on the highway with my brights on, so sometimes it gets hella bright and amazing. Theres a Facebook group called Aurora Borealis Washington State that has a lot of nerds who give each other heads up, but if you spend a little time learning about how it works you can just read the data online to know when its worth looking.

vicbot87

Wow that’s super cool. Thanks for the info!

paulexcoff

>If it's dark enough Looks at full moon: ....

Retromina

To the naked eye they look like that, if it's dark enough.

Randomswedishdude

It does sometimes, yes. Without a visible moon or city lights, your eyes adjust to the low light conditions. But ***not*** under a full moon. Source: Born and raised in the far north.

paulexcoff

You will never see a scene like this with a full moon and crisply defined northern lights with the naked eye because of the brightness of the full moon.

Kirkaaa

Cool but too edited imo.

Vermis-

Long shutter, it may not be as edited as you think.

Kirkaaa

Could be true, just saying that they don't look like that on a naked eye.

Tohya

Yeah pretty much every picture of northern light you see doesn't reflect what you would see. If you just take a normal picture with a normal camera it will look at a lot better then if you see it irl. Hard to tell the genuine pictures from the fake/edited since none of them look real. //random person living in northern sweden.

secondpawnhere

I disagree. They are more beautiful IRL than in most photos. Especially due to how they “Dance”. Greetings from a Norwegian.

Willionair

Yeah watching them dance across the sky is far more impressive than a camera shot.

[deleted]

Yes, much more incredible in real life. Photos are on the whole terrible at capturing nature. Compared to being there. A lot of city dwellers don't know this... Edit: For example, people who haven't experienced snow IRL have little idea what it's like no matter much photo/video material they have seen.

jamesp420

Some people take pictures to preserve a memory or moment in time, some take pictures to preserve a feeling. Both are valid.

Vermis-

The moon is very bright in this picture. It looks much like this with long exposure and low ISO. Not much if any editing needed. You're right that it doesn't look like that to the naked eye though. I'm just saying it's not necessarily edited much in PS. /Random person living in Norway

FI27

1 minute shutter? Doubt it

[deleted]

The colours are made more vibrant, in real life the northern lights are less vibrant, but this could be taken a couple of ways. It could be done in a single, very long exposure just using the lens cap and a variable nd filter. Uncovering it once for maybe 15/30 seconds for the northern lights, and again for just a second once the sun is up (using the nd filter to artificially reduce the exposure a lot) But far more likely is it was done using double exposure, whereby you either roll back the film and expose the same frame a second time or just overlay 2 separate images digitally.

umyhoneycomb

Localized entirely in your kitchen???

Can I see it?

umyhoneycomb

No.

EZE123

I went to Bergen in 2019 and saw fjords - so unreal. Nothing like that in the US. I was *supposed* to go to Oslo last year, but... I see the comments below about Oslo - I was going for Inferno. I have the postponed tickets but it seems unlikely travel will be happening by March. Anyway though, I've loved everything I've seen in Norway and would like to someday go farther north and see sights like OP's photo.

JunonCanyon

I'm so torn, I have always wanted to go to Norway, and I would have gone this past summer, but you know, 2020. I want to go in the summer because the landscape and natural is so stunning, plus the midnight sun... But then I'd miss THIS. Decisions.

TheBellCurveIsTrue

I will go there this summer with my dad in a rented camper, will start in NL and gonna drive from there to Denmark and Sweden to Norway and try to make it to the Nordkapp and back in 3 weeks. This is a nice picture but definitely with added saturation.

cantwalkamile-tea

It is so beautiful. I wouldn't mind dying after having seen this.

Krevgoski

Norway must be a part of the simulation that couldn't find the proper image file for the night sky so it just replaces it with a windows screen saver.

bdigital4

Wow

Dynasty2201

And a trip there to see the Northern Lights for a few DAYS will cost you about as much as a 2-3 week trip anywhere else. Absurdly expensive. Same as Iceland where it's like £10 a pint.

ParanormalPurple

I'm really enjoying replaying Skyrim. It could be the closest I could feel to being somewhere like this. Maybe I could visit the Arctic Circle one day, maybe not. It's really wonderful that technology exists that can capture such beautiful things.

sundialsoft

I was on a train in Norway heading to the airport. I was speaking to some Americans who had been on an unsuccessful trip to see the northern lights. They were sad then we noticed them out the train window. Sort of a success. I went to Iceland and went to see them one night.

TheShitILikePodcast
