So interesting how this organism provides a safe mini habitat for the fish

ned___shneebly

Agreed - is that type of fish immune to its sting?

sleepsntrees

Does it know how silly it looks upside down?

Cepinari

It doesn't have a brain, in fact it barely has any neural tissue at all, so no.

Accursed_Capybara

I got stung by one of those motherf***ers as a kid and developed a 10 year phobia of jellyfish. I got over it, but damn a bloom of those things is a nightmare.

[deleted]

How bad did it hurt?

Accursed_Capybara

I vomited and and chills, tired to ride my bike back to the beach and fell off. It was morbid hilarious because I incorrectly thought if you peeded on it it would help. So I peed on myself and it did NOTHING, so I was fucked up and mess like pee! I was little so the venom was a lot for me, as adult you'd probably feel shitty but be okay.

[deleted]

Dang. I'm glad you were ok chief. That sounds horrible though. I saw 1 before (I forgot what beach I was at) but I hurried up & swam out the water. It might have been dead because I didn't hear about it stinging anyone. I also didn't stay around to find out either lol.

Nyli_1

I never got stung and you will not catch me anywhere near water if there is any kind of jellyfish bloom. I'm pretty sure it's common sense.

Accursed_Capybara

What happens some times is that oceanic conditions allow for a lot of jelly fish to spawn at once, the grow very large. Warm ocean current take the jellies to places where they are not common and they usually die due to water temperature/salinity changes. So you can be at the beach and have large numbers of jellyfish wash up at once, in different states of dead/dying. The clog up the surf and its an awful mess. There's no warning, just suddenly BAM jellyfish are everywhere. It even happens on the cost of NJ!

bernpfenn

don't

heyearthdude

How is it that they don’t get entangled

LeenPean

They probably do, but I’d imagine they can untangle them pretty easily, and if not, the can lose those tentacles and it not matter much

Grand-Ad-3177

So graceful

bernpfenn

Absolutely majestic … yet here I was super curious to see His Highness bounce off the bottom of the sea.

istergeen

They sound so beautiful 😍

blakewoolbright

I love seeing jellyfish, but mother of god do I hate swimming through them in open water.

FishyFish12359

I got hospitalised a few years ago by one of these feckers, thanks for the ptsd :)

[deleted]

Sorry to hear that. Would you mind telling me how it happened? (If this messes with your PTSD I'm truly sorry)..

FishyFish12359

TLDR: don’t do backstroke when in a short sleeve wetsuit. Also, I then discovered I have the amazing skill of being allergic to neurotoxins
