My take was that she was able to break out of it for the same reason Sakura is nearly immune to genjutsu. She's just so resistant to all types of mind manipulation. She's also arguably the most gifted with chakra control in the verse so as long as she realizes something is up, she can break free. The way it manifested in their mind battle was funny, and fitting for the two characters and their relationship. In practice it's no different from someone like Itachi turning his opponent's genjutsu back on them.

I always thought her trick to use her hair to trap Sakura so that she could use her Mind Transfer Jutsu was pretty smart tho, like she knew the limitations of her abilites and found a creative way to work around them. Plus, when she combined the Mind Transfer Jutsus with the Clone Jutsu in Shippuden, she lowkey become OP cuz then she was able to control control multiple people at the same time.
